    If your roads are in good conditions, there are Schwalbe One evolution 20" tires that are very, VERY fast. Essentially a roadbike tire but in 20". Thin, light, narrow and excellent rolling resistance.
    Wax your chain. A mixture of 50% wax and 50% parafin oil is the perfect lubricant for your chain. Strip the chain completely of any dirt and grease, then bath it in the hot wax/oil mixture. Friction facts states that this saves up to 10 watts of power compared to normal chain lube for bicycles.
    Try latex inner tubes(if they are available in the needed size). Yes, you have to pump them up every day, but latex creates a lot less friction than regular butly tubes.
    Avoid internal gear hubs. They might be less maintenance, but a chain on a cassette can be up to 98-99% effective. planetary gears are at most only 95% effective.
    Play around with tire pressure. go with the highest tire pressure where you are still comfortable

    Excellent tips and a very informative video. Also, it's important that the wheels are properly aligned to reduce rolling resistance from tire scrub. Thanks, Saukki and Happy Velomobiling!

    Since I wasn't able to find that video again, I decided to put my comment here.

    Saukki do you ever think road bike gears would be a good idea for a velomobile? I feel like mountain bike gears are very heavy and relatively slow because they are overbuilt to withstand heavy abuse and terrible conditions, plus the gaps between the gears are usually fairly large even when the system is designed to use multiple chainrings. Plus there is some (possibly placebo) 'slowness' I feel to the whole shimano MTB system vs my campagnolo road system. It might be partly to do with how smooth the shifting is on the campag system. I don't have a velo but it seems to me like a two chainring road drivetrain with a 10 speed 12-29t cassette like my road bike would be lighter and more efficient and well suited for the roads in your part of Finland.

    • @TheVelomobileChannel
      @TheVelomobileChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do actually have Sram 12-28 casette which I believe is road casette. It works well around here. I usually only use the largest chainring at the front, but on more hilly area you really need all the gear range you have. So I don’t see any reason to upgrade to road bike drivetrain. Besides in a velomobile you can’t use road bike sifter levers anyway, so you still need mtb levers.

    • @TheVelomobileChannel
      @TheVelomobileChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And by the way I have 3x10 speed gears. If you buy new Quest, it has 3x11. My upcoming Quattrovelo will have 1x11 + mountaindrive.

    • @veryveryintense
      @veryveryintense 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheVelomobileChannel all good points, plus I guess weight doesn't matter too much. I'd love to see a video where we can see the shifts and the type of hills that require you to use different chainrings. You could take off the cover for the derailleur and put a camera there and talk through what it's like to ride. Also I'm sure I've commented this before but I'd love to see you ride somewhere as far away as possible, camp and then ride back the next day, would be a really interesting subject to go further than you can on a regular bike. It didn't seem too hard for you to do your long ride back to Kalvia. Love the recent videos.

      Hey, Saukki, I really have enjoyed your videos. I would really like to try a velomobile some day. I am in NW Louisiana USA and our summer temperatures regularly get to high 90 range and humidity 60-80%. That’s probably too hot for a velomobile then. I got an Azub trike last June and really have enjoyed it. Would a faring help on a regular trike.?

    A body actually isn't optimal in terms of aero, the dimpled surface of a golfball would be the best formula for the velomobile.

  • @GerdLinden
    @GerdLinden 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wheelcovers: A guy in the german velomobilforum testet wheelcovers and he find out that a wheelcover only at one side is a little more inefficient than no wheelcovers at all. But you can´t put wheelcover at both sides because of the cooling of the brakes. So no wheelcovers at all.

    • @TheVelomobileChannel
      @TheVelomobileChannel  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm.. interesting 🤔
      Rear wheel has covers both side. So that should be more efficient, right?

    • @GerdLinden
      @GerdLinden 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. Look here: www.velomobilforum.de/forum/index.php?threads/radabdeckungen-radkappen-stoff-oder-carbon-oder.38422/page-5#post-713162 He measured the time that a spinning wheel needs from 50 kph to 10 kph. "Offen" means "without wheelcovers" "verkl." = "with whellcovers at both sides". Two posts further: "Bei der Messung mit nur einseitiger Folie muss irgend was schief gelaufen sein, die Werte sind mit etwa 80 s extrem schlecht?" = "Measuring the one-side-coverd wheel there must have gone something wrong. Values are extremely bad (80 s vs approx. 100 s)"
      And wheelcovers made of textile are useless as well.

    • @zazugee
      @zazugee 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      you only need air cooling for drum brakes, because they tend to overheat on long downhill descents.

    • @zazugee
      @zazugee 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      About wheels, from the road bicycling world, the more important is that the tires are just a little bit wider than the rims, and the tire+rim ensemble have a water drop shape to be more aerodynamic, the rim also should be a little elongated.
      But i don't know how this would work inside a covered wheel because the airflow is different from a normal bike.
