    I remembered this pattern as soon as I saw it on your thumbnail.
    I don't know that I have ever tied it but I will be now. The parachute feather you chose is definitely not a familiar colour but I like that.
    A great pattern to be sure in an excellent color combination. As always Barry, thank you for sharing!

      Hi Kerry, the hackle is a standard Whiting March brown dyed grizzle saddle, one of my favourites.

      The feather bender
      Wow after Jimi Hendrix . This is why I love reading about the history of the flys as much as I love tying them.

    Nice work, chap! This one, in much smaller sizes, is a killer on the spring creeks in my area. Like you say, I don't know why. But, it is.

    • @Thefeatherbender
      @Thefeatherbender  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, yes a killer in smaller sizes.

    The purple colour evoked nostalgic sentiments for me, as I won a prize for a salmon fly where the base colour was Pearsalls silk floss. Still have a spool and will use it for this fly. Many thanks Barry.

    Good fly that works and a great tie. Wished I could get my calf hair to behave as well as you do. I still struggle with it but it makes a great post that’s visible.

    • @Thefeatherbender
      @Thefeatherbender  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Jeff, just make sure that the hair is straight, don't take too much, clean it good and stack it a couple of times, that should make it behave better.

    • @jeffprice4611
      @jeffprice4611 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ll try stacking it more. Thanks for the tip.

    The elk are starting to bugle here in the rockies...an early september snow kicked things off...once bow season finishes its time to start my favorite fly fishing of the year...
    This will for sure be a good choice on the south platte if things start to rise...we call this one a "jimi"

    • @Thefeatherbender
      @Thefeatherbender  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds fantastic, never hunted elk but would love to! I have an old book about hunting elk on South Island in New Zealand. Some of the old B/W photographs of the hunters with trophies, where the base of the antler is as broad as your thigh, huge animals.

    Never tried it before but looks good enough to eat so will obtain the materials and make a few for early summer on the Waioeka River down-under in NZ. Thanks for sharing.

    I am heading up to my closes local fly shop, an hour and 10 min drive. On my list is among other things purple thread and calf body hair- the Purple Haze is on my tying list. Why it works can't say other than the trout think is something and they take it. Size 14 or 16 where I live the brook trout just love them. Well, I am off to the shop.

    Barry what brand of purple dubbing are you using on the
    Purple Haze fly . Your demos are always very helpful. Thank you Sir for all your contributions.

    Great fly, I have used it before. Have you tried a drop of UV Resin on the post and twisting it a turn before hitting with UV light? Tim Flagler taught me that. It holds the post up straight and tight.

    • @Thefeatherbender
      @Thefeatherbender  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Gary, I'll give it a go but not a big fan of using UV resin on absorbent materials, once the resin has soaked in the UV light won't penetrate the material and cure it. But I can see that twisting it may help.

  • @aaronmiller6118
    @aaronmiller6118 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Could you use floss for the body? I think I only have two purple fly tying materials. one is floss and the other is pigs fur dubbing but that's for use in full dress salmon flies.

    • @Thefeatherbender
      @Thefeatherbender  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Aaron, yes floss will work just fine. Good luck with it!
