- Over the past few days I have been tying up an order of several dozen traditional dry's with mallard slip wings. I have found this extremely therapeutic , almost Zen like! But tying slip wings can prove to be challenging for the new beginner, heres is a tutorial with a Light Cahill variant that should make it easier to master.

Great to see a pro mess with those quills. I only mess with my fan-wings - but great video. : )
Thank you!
Some great tips on how to improve the quality of slip wings. Thanks Barry.
Thank you Donald.
You do great videos which always make me want to go and try to tie your flies. Best thing is that I can practise to get them exactly right by repeating each of your steps on the videos. Thank you so much for improving my fly tying no end .

At last someone has shown me how to do slip wings....up to this I was using cdc, deer hair and any other sort of wing because I wasn't sure how to do slip wings correctly, thank you very much, very much appreciated.
Thanks hopper, good luck with them.
This man has magic hands.
Thank you Phil.
Encore un montage parfait un vrai petit bijou. Vous êtes un grand artiste dans votre spécialité. Merci de nous livrer toutes ces instructions bien précieuses.
Merci!
What a great looking fly! To me the appearance is of a classic Catskill style dry fly with quill wings replacing the flank feather wings. Superb!
Thanks Gary, yes you got it.
Masterful work, great videography, and explanation of what you're doing. Thank you.
Thank you Dave.
I love your attention to detail, like putting the wax on the string to lubricate it (I'm assuming that's the reason) and you make your flies look so pretty!
Waxing the thread gives the thread and material more purchase (stops it slipping).
The goose quill wings are the most difficult skill in fly tying imho. Very nice, Barry. (30+yrs tying).
Thanks Ed. Everything is difficult until you know how!
Beautiful fly! I'm still a beginner and had no idea you could use moose hair for a body like that. I would have assumed it was quill body. Always a great watch and learning experience with you!!
Thanks Gary, yes moose mane and body hair can be used for lots of techniques. If you are a new beginner may I recommend: th-cam.com/video/mVLof0uXqyE/w-d-xo.html
I've seen many videos on here about tying flies. Your videos are the most informative and easiest to follow. My Grandfather started teaching me the art several years back. When he passed, I received all his fly tying equipment. When I tie flies it reminds me of him and is exhilarating when you catch a fish on one you've tied yourself.
Ahh ta en krok str f.eks 12, og bruk for å få høyre/venstre vinge slips like brede hver gang ,enkelt og kjempe smart idé 👍👍
Takk Rune.
Great tie and great information. My issues when tying slip wings especially wets is I tend to cut the fibers with the thread. How do I avoid this? I have tried different thread sizes and flattening the thread but still have the issue. Thanks in advance.
Thanks Paul, you need to use Sheer 14/0 and add a little wax. This thread is so fine that you can't apply so much pressure that it will cut the wings, the thread will break first! Let me know how you get on.
Que pluma es la del ala, gracias
Gracias!
Nice as always! What kind of tool is use for the wax? I never saw this before..
Hi thanks, its just an old tooth brush with a little wax stuck to it.
A great tie as always. Just clear one point for me please. When measuring the slip for cutting I assume the slip is the same width as the hook gape, so you use the same hook to mark the cut.
As far as I'm aware Steve you usually use the hook gap to the size of fly wings your tying hope this helps ya mate
Hi Steve thanks. It depends a little on what hook make you are using. Mustad hooks are regarded having the 'true' proportion scale e.g.. hook gape-length ratio. So I use a hook two sizes smaller than the hook being tied on to measure the wing width.
I wasn't far off lol
Great looking fly. I’m interested in bleaching and dying some moose hair. Do you have a good method to keep from burning the hair with the bleach?
Hi Jeff, sorry I have way too little knowledge of bleaching and dyeing to give advice on it, but I can tell you that Natures Spirit in the US have a fantastic range of dyed moose mane.
@@Thefeatherbender If you start with a base of bleached or light moose hair, permanent markers like Sharpies work well.
