We really appreciate it when people provide this kind of information. We often don't have records of locations for these old films. Thank you.

I remember my older uncle still put his hand out to stop in the late 60s early 70s. It was the first time I’d ever seen anyone doing that as a young boy

I saw an old truck once with a metal hand shape and a lever in the cab thr operated it!
I'd so love to find one of those now...

@kurtrules100 Right you are kurtrules - corrected. I must have been too busy looking out for the signals!

Looks like a lot of the film was made in the Collaroy and Long Reef area

Was hand signalling still prevalent at this time because many cars did not have turning/indicator/stop lights? When was the requirement to make hand signals abolished?

The rules on hand signals were never abolished. Rules 49 + 50 (right turn) and and 54 + 55 (stop or slow down) still tell you to make hand signals when you don't have lights fitted or they're defective. These hand signals are also exceptions to the law against putting your arm outside the window.

If you wanted to make a left turn, what would you do?

Wait - your hand held UP meant stop? Not in the USA; you held your hand DOWN for a stop. The hand up vertically meant a right turn; straight out was a left turn. (Remember, or course, that drivers in the US are on the left side of the vehicle.)
When I got my driver's license in 1971 I was still required to know and use hand signals, although by then the great majority of vehicles had turn signals.

Australia has no official hand signal for ''left"

Didn't they have signals and brake lights in 1958, it plain dangerous to be putting your arm out the window full-stop..
