  • Marc Bolan was one of the major glam rock figures of the early '70s and at the height of his career, was as big as The Beatles and bigger than Bowie. He was a flamboyant entertainer and extraordinary performer for his millions of adoring fans. 'Ride On' takes you on a journey from his struggles on the back streets of North London, to his success achieving international recognition. The programme also features many of Bolan's famous hits, including "Get it On" and "Ride A White Swan" and shows the in-depth story of Marc Bolan and his rise to success.
Rolan Bolan, Marc's son, authorized the programme which is packed with never before seen footage of Bolans' performances and exclusive interviews with his friends and long-time lover Gloria Jones. These interviews provide an insight into his career, which lasted two decades and saw Bolan through the Glam Rock movement, to the start of the Punk revolution.

Marc Bolan lives on through music today. Adverts, theatre , me singing to my 12 year old son. Not many people alive can to that and make you feel this way. This man is one of the best.

If Marc were still alive today, he would probably be a judge on a talent show like "The Voice" or "Britain's Got Talent", and he'd be known for his flamboyant scarfs and hats, and possibly wigs.

And Gloria squealing in all his songs for this documentary. She wasn't there in the beginning when he was a Superstar...She dragged him down and what has she been since she killed him? Nothing. It was June - Always June. Listen to his songs. Ain't Gloria's golden "cat" in the bedroom she's squealing about.....or he's writing about.

I had never even heard of T rex. Not until I just recently saw the flick 'Baby Driver'. I am SO glad I discovered this guy and wished I had a long time ago. I have always been a huge fan of The Doors, The Beatles, Donovan, Dylan, Crosby Stills & Nash, you name it, but for some reason never heard of T rex. And I don't know why because they are brilliant. Oh well, better late than never. Long live great music!

As a life long Marc Bolan fan this is why I hope they never make a movie about his life. The "reconstruction" of Marc's last days is awful. T.Rextasy are a great covers band but Danielz doesn't look or sound like Marc Bolan. Too many people who worked with or knew Bolan have created so many memories that the truth has been warped over the years. I never stopped buying the records and attended the tours right to the end. The fans know the truth.

Well I think this was a good insight to the rise and fall of Marc, I agree the reconstruction with the overweight actor was not in order. I loved Marc and was so happy when he 'was coming back' in 1977. Such a shame it ended so tragically. Seeing Gloria speak at the end was quite poignant and so sad. What a waste regardless of what he went through. Marc Bolan was a Star! I have always blamed Gloria for his death but now I can see it was a drunken accident...both to blame,
Getting in car and letting anyone drive over the limit was a stupid thing to do...but it was the 70's....who thought about that back then? God rest his soul, sadly missed after all these years,

A lot of the video clips and photos are not from the periods of Marc's career being discussed. Also June Child and Tony Visconti should have been spoken about. Not crazy about Danielz (from T.Rextasy) portrayal of Marc during "the reconstructed" parts. But them I'm a very picky Marc Bolan fan.

    12:46 "Sky in their hair,
But now their are content to wear stars on their brows"
    "beard of stars" and "unicorn"
I think that these are referring to the Rochatian unveiling of the "others in mind".
20:30 "Lose his musical integrity!" "Get it on" is likewise apocalyptic, possibly the best thing ever, not just the best thing that he had ever done. I wonder why John Peel did not like it. 21:35 "Meta Guru," reservations! It is brilliant. He understand now the function, and (bi) sexuality of the guru.

I saw a T REX documentary with Steve Harley praising Bolan on his *serious* book of poetry. He was so awestruck that I thought it *must* be *really* good. I read parts of it online and was extremely confused as to how anybody would think it was *good*, let alone *praise* it. Then I remembered it was Steve Harley who said it and he is *hardly* renowned as a *great* lyricist.

I just feel that people shouldn’t be mean to Gloria she lost the love of her life. The father of her son it seems to me it was a freak accident. I also believe Marc wouldn’t want any blame on Gloria. He always said he would die in a car accident before he was 30. I knew a friend that said he wouldn’t live to 30. “l said don’t say that, and he did die too in a car accident as a passenger at 29. RIP Marc.

35:00. Geoff Dexter is checking out a new punk band. In the following reconstructed scene 'at Mortans' all that the guy in the purple shirt seems to do is sit at the bar rolling his eyes, as Mark regail's the punk band with his acoustic guitar. If I had been in that pub, I would have been chuffed that Mark Bolan had brought his guitar along. Dexter needs to explain himself better also. 'What situation did he not want to be in?'

the worst marc documentary i've seen so far; what the fuck are they doing reconstructing the night he died? with a pudgy nobody, no less? christ alive. no offense to the guy playing him, but he's barely even trying, the voice is wrong, the mannerisms are wrong - when there is a marc bolan film, and there will be, they will cast someone who can really inhabit the role. why couldn't this doc have done the same? marc bolan - the real one, not the coke monster - hated low quality, trashy productions. he would hate those reconstructions.
loved the interviews, though. always good to hear about people's memories of time spent. one of the most enduring things about bolan for me is that even though he became that coke monster, even though he was ALWAYS selfish, self-obsessed and a ruthless marketing man --- the final word is always how kind he was, and how generous he was, at the heart of it all. even those who were no longer among his close friends when he died.
that's a rare and lovely thing, i think. for 'kind' to be the final word on who you were. i'd love that.

That Gibson les Paul guitar 🎸 with the lp custom neck got stolen from his home the night he died, it turned up years later in the 90’s I think the owner didn’t even know what he owned, it’s on the Gibson website I think 🤔

"Glam imposters, self indulgent progressive rockers and the insidious disco beat." But tell us how you really feel. Geez, way to keep an open mind. Every genre of music has something worth listening to in my honest opinion.

I loved his music but as a man, and I use that term loosely, he failed. He didn't value his wife, didn't value his friends that made him big, all about him. And I don't feel sorry for gloria. She knew she was wrong from the start. Only thing that maybe would have saved him was his child but even that wasn't enough. Narcissism at it's best or worse.

22:50 it wasn't until mid 69 that Bowie released his breakthrough single Space Oddity, so him touring with T.Rex as support then wouldn't have been any big scene, if it is at all true, which I highly doubt.

There's no T.V and as we know David Bowie needed T.V when he had T Rex. Without TV the production of the music went. Tony was the 5th member without doubt. Also where's June? Early Bowie moments - Prettiest Star - Their early friendship. Probably would have re kindled. Dandy in the Underworld was good and was a return to him caring about his music , but it lacked Tony. I think if Tony V had produced Dandy in the Under World it would have gone massive.
