I hate to admit it, but this midwestern American had never heard Waterloo Sunset. As far as I know it got little if any play on our local rock station. Yesterday's Papers have introduced me to a generation of mostly UK artists that didn't have a big audience in the US but deserve recognition. Thank you.

Possibly because the Kinks had been banned from touring America in 1965 by the American Federation of Musicians, on some phoney baloney charge, and the ban wasn't lifted until 1969.

Pointless comparison, but I doubt many in 1967 would look back 55 years to the wax piano rolls and sheet music of 1912 with quite as much fondness as I'm sure many now look back to 1967. Terrific music.

So many timeless classics! 'Waterloo Sunset' is one of those Kinks songs that make me wish I lived in Britain in the 60s, 'The Wind Cries Mary" is one of my favourite songs by the Experience, and the B-side of Traffic's 'Paper Sun', 'Giving to You', is an excellent psychedelic jazzy tune-curiously, I was listening to it before I tapped on this video. I never heard The Brain before, but I must say, their tune was quite impressive. The experimentalism and ingeniousness of the late 60s/early 70s will never be matched.

There wasn't all that many professional in house producers who were interested in pop music.

“Whiter shade” to this day is an iconic song in Chile, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the song also was one of the most played songs in the last 60 years there. “Waterloo” probably didn’t take off in North America because the lyrics referred to a specific but unknown location. A shame really but the song was thus saved to be loved later, when those of us across the water grew wiser.

Describing Gary Brooker as "Stevie Winwood without the viciousness..."? Quite harsh on one of the best pop/rock/soul/blues/psychedelic singers ever to emerge from the UK, not to mention multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and arranger (who just turned 19 during the month under review but had already racked up a mountain of musical accomplishments, with decades more to come). Still, an excellent compendium of great songs that still echo unforgettably in my musical consciousness after more than five and one-half decades. Great to hear pre-Yes Steve Howe's guitar on Tomorrow's "My White Bicycle." Thank you again, PT, for a bright spot in a lumbar-damaged (damn old age and its chronic back pain!) I feel like I definitely agree with Penny Valentine regarding A Whiter Shade of Pale it's such a beautiful song and beautiful melody and it's sung so beautifully that you think you're about to hear the most profound words ever and it's just about having too much to drink lol. It's like the lyrics aren't quite worthy of this song if you will. I used to mishear the lyric, and think it was "call out for another dream" which I think sounds so much more poignant and beautiful and fitting for the melody than "call out for another drink"

  • @spiritof6663

MAN! It's just one five-star masterpiece after another for this month!! The only tracks I see missing here are The Moody Blues' "Fly Me High" (their rebirth!) and The Hi-Fi's "Tread Softly For The Sleepers". Otherwise, trying to pick which one of these singles was best is a nearly impossible task, although I suppose I'd *have* to go for "Waterloo Sunset" which is one of the greatest songs ever. "Paper Sun" and "My White Bicycle" are glorious slices of psychedelia, and even the Troggs got trippy! Incredible music! The spring of 1967 has to be some kind of peak for Western Civilization (there was amazing stuff happening in the US that month, too, of course: Country Joe & The Fish "Electric Music For The Mind & Body", Zappa "Absolutely Free", Mort Garson "Cosmic Sounds", Red Krayola "The Parable Of Arable Land", etc.). In any case I just want to congratulate you heartily for having finished all of 1967, and (hint hint) I know I wouldn't mind similar journeys back through 1966 and 1968!! Thanks so much for all the high-quality content, it's much appreciated!

Like the 45 sleeve you showed, a lot of early Traffic sleeves in Europe referred to the band as “Stevie Winwood’s Traffic” or “Traffic with Stevie Winwood” etc.

Once again have to mention the enthusiasm and insanity of the British pop music machine!
With seemingly a dozen weekly tabloid pop music publications reviewing and parceling down each single record and creating trends where none exist. I think this alone deserves its own historical review.

A great selection; with several nascent prog rockers getting their start around then.
I just about remember that month and year and one could sense something was ‘in the air’ (I’d just turned 9..).
I liked most pop music back then.
Maybe a lot of it was aimed at introverted, rural dwelling pre-teens.

Nice to trip back to the groovy past... I was on the verge of graduating High School.... and of course, because I'm American, I didn't get to hear most of what you played.. but we would've been listening if we had the chance... and some of those did make it over to us. Always enjoy!

You say, Robert Fripp, I sit up and pay attention. I loved The Cheerful Insanity of Giles, Giles and Fripp. And King Crimson, sigh… I’m over the moon! Never heard of Fripp’s and Michael and Peter Giles’ involvement with The Brain. From the clip I heard, Nightmares In Red, I want to hear more. I’m intrigued!

I never knew Tomorrow's My White Bicycle wasn't a hit. It's the song which, after hearing it about ten years ago,, got me into exploring English psychedelic bands that were unknown over here in America. I love their CD, which has 23 songs.

What a month! Here in NZ we never got to hear My White Bicycle, (which see the book "white bicycles making music in the 1960s" Joe Boyd Profile Books Ltd 2010).
Nor john's children. Nor The Troggs' Night of the Long Grass.
    Nor Nightmares in Red.
Definitely part of my formative years. I didn't even know there was a music press, let alone what anyone else was saying. I just had my radio and my own evaluations.

Waterloo Sunset? Why isn't Ray mentioned when people talk about Lennon/McCartney or Dylan? He really could write about the lives and trials of regular folks. Sort of what Jarvis Cocker did with Pulp. "Byrds Back With Dylan Song"? Never saw that one coming. Dylan's songs were sort of a safety net for The Byrds.
