- Fellow glam rock star Suzi Quatro narrates a documentary which examines Marc Bolan's childhood ambitions of fame and where it led him, using previously lost TV and radio interviews, rediscovered Top of the Pops recordings, unseen concert footage and unique home movies.
Includes contributions from his companion Gloria Jones, brother Harry Feld, producer Tony Visconti, Queen's Roger Taylor, Steve Harley, Zandra Rhodes and more, with Visconti also deconstructing the track Ride a White Swan.

From the moment I accidentally saw him on Top of the Pops I was hooked. It was Metal Guru. Before that I’d never heard of Marc Bolan and had no interest in pop music. He changed my life. I was 14 and now I’m 60. I’m still listening to T Rex and u tubing him.

Marc Bolan as I remember as a young 12 year old, was a sensation, and all of my school class mates who were very much into music at that period, could not help but love his style and presence. He certainly was a natural super star and had so much incredible style. RIP Marc.

I met Marc Bolan ( in 1972) briefly at a party in Hollywood when I was 16 years old. I went up to him and I said "How does it feel to be a superstar?" and he burst out laughing. I asked him for his autograph and he signed it on a matchbook cover. I am so thankful for that brief encounter.

Why.......would one go to a visiting rock star, and ask "how does it feel to be a superstar"...❓ No wonder he burst out laughing , because he was far from a superstar beyond England's borders. Everywhere else he was struggling to gain mass acceptance , despite his one major world hit "Get It On".... which he failed to repeat outside the U.K....
Which often was a cold shower, when after almost Beatle like "T-Rextacy" in the U.K. ,travelling to other countries he was hardly noticed at airports.....and had trouble selling out major venues outside the U.K. Marc definitely had no Bowie like acceptance.
No wonder he doggedly kept on chasing that U.K. teeny bopper market,with often that same twelve bar boogie woogie rehashing....For all these other U.K. "glam" acts like Slade, Bay City Rollers or Sweet ,it was the same story, after maybe one minor hit in te U.S. , they failed to make a lasting impression.....and while they were out trying to crack that elusive U.S. market through exhausting coast to coast touring , they were forgotten back home.....
Pure genius. I listen to Marc at least once a week and have been for decades. Seems like he is still the cutting edge at times.

Watch a TV documentary last night on him and this this morning was driving this afternoon and a man walked towards my car wearing a "Slider" album cover t shirt! Thanks i saw T Rex in 71 or 72 have always loved their music but being a Canadian didn't know a lot of the back story till now.This was excellent :) I'm 68 now and still listen to them weekly

Marc Bolan was an angel of the universe! His music was utterly unique as well as that for the charts! Who else can say that other than Elvis, Bowie & Michael Jackson! People... Bolan lives...

Me too! I thought I would watch for a minute and made it through till the end. He lived in a magical musical age that hasn't been matched since and may never be for a very long time. When we lost Bowie the continuum of this extraordinary lyrical era seemed to have perished.

I love Marc, had such a unique voice, I also love Harry Styles, and at 22.11 that still of Marc is so vibe-y of Harry gave me chills, Marc was taken too soon, but then he was way before his time in his wonderful music, 'that' day as horrific...

Marc was such an incredibly handsome guy, not to mention his fashion sense and musical genius. And a very nice person. Such a shame that he was tragically taken so young.

David Bowie and Steve Harley spoke highly of him, Gloria seems to have loving memories of him, so did June for that matter. Seems nice enough to me.

Marc Bolan is the ONLY dead Rock Star who, to me at least, doesn't feel dead. Seem dead. His passing, forty years on now, just doesn't make any sense. It's, like, he's very much alive. Doesn't age a day. Is still contemporary, still relevant, still here. Of This Time.

True. I probably hear his and Bowie's music more now in movie soundtracks and commercials than any other musician still living.

Loved the days of dancing around the playground to Metal Guru and Telegram Sam as a school kid. A joyous musician and performer with an arty edge but as human and fallible as the rest of us.
Hats off to Tony Visconti too for his work in that era.
Oh this takes me right back to when I was a kid. I loved Marc Bolan. Ride A White Swan, Hot Love, Jeepster I'm transported back to happy times. Apart from Metal Guru. That song is bittersweet for me, I loved it but my mam died that year.

I've wondered what happened since "Electric Warrior" in 1973 with marriage and a baby carriage, I changed play grounds and lost touch with close mate's in my music life...children all grown, 1 of 7 got my love and taste of Nolan and now teaches me; heck of a drummer and knows more about the blue's 1940's and more! He'll love this..not many of us old hippies still around. Again, thanks for the missing chapter of the Bolan legacy in my "bucket list." Peace, love and good memories to all. Don't bogart and watch for the miracles of this life He died for that we could learn to dance and do so in abundance. KJOHN

I wasnt born when he was big in his heyday I am 44 and love Marc Bolan I wondered what he would be like as a 71 year old now in 2018 if he was still alive 😢
Music was moving so fast back then. New, great albums every year.
Just hearing them say he's been "sticking to the same formula for 3-4 years" really gives you perspective. Back then artists grew so quickly that they could be seen as repetitive if they didn't change for just a few years. But Today 3-4 years seem like nothing and I'd be quite surprised to see an artist change their style in such a short timespan
+BenRangel now they take 3-4 yrs between albums. we'll never have hard-working bands again. Musicians that have the normal drive of those guys back then, end up in 2 or 3 bands now.
with a face like his and a natural feel for music this guy was always gonna be something special. i myself fell a bit into the trap of labelling him as only 'pop' for a while. recently returned and was really surprised as to how good his old stuff still sounded. personally love the slider tanx era. top, top guy sadly missed
In an effort to complete my T. Rex Wax Co. vinyl, I'm liking more of the later stuff than I did before. Great production but T.. Rex studio energy was meant to be heard on vinyl. Vastly underrated guitarist.
Much to my Fathers disgust I loved Bolan from the time I was 8 years old - massive influence on my music and playing as a drummer still.

Friend of mine went to a free concert when he was a teenager. Took his sister with him. Marc Bolan’s band was playing, and Robert Plant was in a band that was also playing that day. Must have been a helluva free gig. His sister saw Bolan go on stage and she ran up to it and twisted her ankle and fell very awkwardly. Bolan stopped what he was doing and made sure she was Ok and got her a seat on the side of the stage, and made sure after the show that she was OK. Naturally my mate and his sisters were fans for life.
We lost two musical greats in '77! One of Marc's idols, Elvis - Aug 16, and one month later Marc - Sept 16. The sad summer of '77.

I remember the day it was announced that Marc had been killed in a car crash. I got up early from my warm bed that had a poster above my bed rest of Marc. I went with my mother to join a long line cueing up for bread out side a bakery as the UK was on a bread strike It was 6am in the morning and someone has a transistor radio in the cue, it came on the news that he had been killed. I remember everyone being shock at the tragic news including my mum and me. It was such a bleak September morning and Marc was the talk till the bakers opened its doors. His music was being played out loud from this little transistor from the radio station in tribute.
I was staying at June's house in Fulham, Paul Varley was her then partner, we were speechless. I do blame Gloria for being pissed, she should have never been driving.

The tree where Marc was killed {and Marc's house} was near where we lived as kids {East Sheen} and the tree for decades had its bark stripped off by fans.

His music still sounds fresh and unlike anything else. Not just his rockin hits but weird songs like Ballrooms of Mars and the haunting Once upon the Seas of Abyssinia. Would love to know what was going through his mind when he came up with these songs. Sadly, we will never know.
Finally, a GREAT documentary with GREAT interviewees!
Interesting that the brothers speak so differently. Marc sounds posh and his brother Harry sounds working class.

What an absolutely fantastic biography. Thumbs up to Suzie Q. for her work. She did this documentary with a lot of love. He was a beautiful and striking young man. his face was gorgeous, like finely chiseled. His hair was amazing. I thought he was cute even when he gained the weight. He appeared to be so beautiful on the inside too. I loved his style sense , including the boa's. Just my style. My best friend and I used to copy his make up. We has super straight, long hair so we couldn't do his hair. We did Bowie's hair instead, feather cut and dyed red. My wall was plastered with his pics. Too bad he got healthy so shortly before he passed away. He wouldn't have has to go through all of that shit he went through. He was my biggest teenage crush.
Its a familiar story, Bolan constantly and obsessively trying to reinvent himself in the late 60s. Bowie did the same. No wonder so much great music came from this era. That's what's missing today, its why there is no good music today. There's no hunger for greatness.
+Charles Black I think a lot of it has to do with the way music is distributed now. The whole business is just a shadow of what it was back then. There surely are people who want to be great but it's like pulling teeth to get out there because there aren't big studios bankrolling things the way they used to. Such a Catch-22; you can't go on tour unless you get big, and you can't get big unless you go on tour.
They even had full size, all 5 foot 3, cardboard Marc Bolan from Elwctric Warrior cover in the record stores. It was just there, still life in Glittrer land welcoming us all to a new sound. Eddie Cochran would have been proud.
That album paved the way. Tony Viscomti certainly had the touch for awakening the glam rock on us all back then.

What makes it even more sad was that Marc was one of many artists who died just as they were making a comeback. Billy Fury was on a verge of a comeback in 1982, felled by a heart attack. John Lennon came out of a five year seclusion in 1980, shot by a lunatic. David Bowie returned to the scene only to be struck down by cancer. So sad.
Marc was brilliant. Love all his records.

i remember listening to t-rex in the 70s an lovd his music as a kid, most of the rock pop music, from brit bands an american bands, then toward lat 70's Gary Newman the plan, tubeway army, friends are Electric. then Van Halen. lets rock.

Liked him, my first ever single purchase was 'Ride a White Swan'. But in all honesty he had, and enjoyed, all the success that was due to him. He would never have been big again, he wasn't a Bowie.

I love John Peel (RIP), but I can't believe he dissed rock era Marc Bolan! He was great at it.. A pioneer. Way better than his acoustic stuff in my opinion. And not many men could get away with wearing feather boas and heels like he did.
So sad he died prematurely, I think he would've been a great father.
I first heard Tyrannosaurus Rex in the days when John Peel played them all the time. I'm thinking this was in the very late 60's or very early 70's. While I thought that was interesting and very unique, I have to admit liking better the later "electric" style that he evolved into. After seeing T-Rex playing on BBC's TOTP's playing Ride a White Swan, I realized then just how big Marc Bolan was going to be. Great footage here on this BBC documentary.
