Bentley should put a *Depreciation Gauge* on the dashboard right next to the tachometer. It would have to be something like a calendar / odometer combo gauge, with a dollar figure overlay, so you could see just how much value your new Bentley is losing with every passing mile, and every passing day. This gauge would run continually in the background, so that when you get into the vehicle after a prolonged absence, it would be able to tell you exactly how much less it is worth since the last time you drove it. I would also suggest that they include a *Doomsday / Sunset* feature with the depreciation gauge, (they could market it as a package!). This feature would activate when the car has achieved *maximum worthlessness* , which can best be described as the point where it would make more sense financially to have it crushed and made into a coffee table, than it would to replace the carbon ceramic brakes.

Oh, that's pretty easy, just look at the odometer and multiply each mile by $20! IE, 1000 mi = $20,000. Seems about right to me. Tyler even said so. But I'm wrong . . . that's just for repairs.

I have a 96 Brooklands I've owned for 8 years. I've spent $22k on various repairs since I bought it and that's me doing most of the work. I just completed a 2,500 road trip and it was perfect. It has never let me down. Unfortunately the two main problems with these cars is either they are neglected because owners don't have the desire or funds to maintain them or the people working on them are completely clueless. Even Rolls/Bentley dealers are not interested or knowledgeable about working on these antiques, I already found that out. Anyone can buy an old Bentley, they're cheap but running it is the trick. If you want one, buy the best and either learn to fix it yourself or find a good mechanic who wont charge you an arm and leg. They are built like any classic British car, very simple but labor intensive. I've lost my patience many times on this car while doing a particular repair but the secret is to walk away calm down start again and stay focused. Easier said than done!

Look at his service records. The basic problem with these cars is that they are junk. Their systems are Rube Goldberg "engineering" exercises.

@JAWSDAKILLER Actually I have a 1988 420 SEL and it has been VERY reliable. I bought it with 144K miles and now have 320K miles...great car. Maintenance is not bad. The thing's a beast. You MUST have a great mechanic, however...they will SAVE you money.

    • @danielnelson4881
      @danielnelson4881 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

@JAWSDAKILLER Man older Mercedes, especially the diesels, were fuckin solid as hell! Those things ran forever and a day. I think people crushed them just because they got scared they would be stuck with that one car the rest of their lives. Since they usually go until the car doesn't make sense to be repaired anymore and the only way to do that was to crush it lol.

So far, the voice of common sense has saved me, but I need constant reminders. And I live in the UK, where you might expect it to be easier to run a Bentley. It runs so smooth and there are nu bumps or rattles, the radio doesn't work, neither do the powered mirrors or the driver side heated seat. But I smile every time I drive it. It's an absolute boat with virtually no performance but I don't care. The Bosch gar-ba-G-tronic mechanical fuel injection is a major reason why the European specialty shop I used to work for had a pretty firm rule of "1996 or newer only." It is such an over complicated system, and there was no reason for it to survive for as long as it did. There were good electronic fuel injection systems widely available in the early 1980s (some available even earlier than that) on cars much less expensive than this, yet some manufacturers like Mercedes, RR and Bentley kept using the garbagetronic will into the 90s.
The hydraulic system was just complicated for the sake of being complicated, and in my opinion, downright dangerous. Having so many vehicle systems that are integral for maintaining vehicle control (brakes, steering and suspension) controlled off of one massively over-complicated hydraulic system was/is idiotic.

There is an easy solution for this car. It's transmission is the lynch pin of the plan. It's a 4L80e. If I had that car the most important thing would be the body and interior. I would strip it down. Swap in a Chevrolet V8 to the transmission. I'd remove the hydraulic suspension and switch either to a modern self leveling air suspension or a steel spring suspension. I'd rewire everything and replace anything bespoke or expensive with cheap, readily available GM or Ford components. It would be as easy as maintaining a HD gas GM pickup truck when I was done with it. It would just have a cool body and interior.

Dump the engines, transmissions and breaking systems. Put a LS engine and Dot fluid breaking system then you have reliability and no more high cost for repairs

Just like the old man who should be driving it, I think it's time for your Turbo-R to get a diaper.

Okay all this makes me think of is when I turned 18 and got so happy about buying a 2013 BMW 550i M sport and I was so excited I now have a 400hp twin turbo luxury sedan and then quickly found out things where breaking right and left and I didn’t know any good independent mechanics that could do work on a bmw so I was dumb and got a evaluation done at the bmw stealer ship and they wanted 8k to sort it out. I personally wanted to do whatever I had to do and save the money to work on it and fix it instead of buying a new car but my parents and everyone pushed me into getting a reliable car so basically everything in me wishes I kept the bmw and spent all my money fixing it even if they thought I was crazy bc it brought me so much joy but now I’m on square one again financially with a boring slow but reliable car and already want another bmw just not one with a n63 v8 engine. Tyler please get a 2013 550i !

The Turbo R is absolutely gorgeous. I'd take it any day, glitches and all. The hydraulic system is from Citroen originally which is why it's so fantastically overcomplicated.

Sounds just like a recurring nightmare where you're running away from something (any English car, or Ex-wife) that's always dragging money out of your wallet.

any car drags money out of your wallet what most people forget is they earn you money by taking you to work. most ignor issues let them build up and bin the car as a total fix scraps the car. its why i only lease new car for work now, its always someone else's problem and cost to fix. my current german shit box has had 3 major and 5 minor repairs in 18months their crap now o ly bearly last their warranty no longer built to do 300k miles

@@edwilko8819 bro dont try to justify a weak Bentley by saying all cars need repair.. Toyotas dont need repair.. I just bought a camry w 150k miles and aint nothin was changed. I just changed spark plugs for the first time in its life.. Ran great even w the og plugs..

@@edwilko8819 I have to go with the truth hurts reply. The Toyotas are great cars. Very low maintenance $$$ if you maintain them. I have had GM's, Mercedes, Fords, etc., etc. I have to go with Toyota being one of the best. I had a 2009 Corolla with 100k on it. I always used synthetic oil and changed it religiously each year whether it needed it or not (I get to work from home and don't go out much). I put on an HD suspension, coil-over shocks, body stiffeners front and rear, HD sway bars, new rims tires. I kept it in the KISS concept. Keep it Simple and Stupid. I didn't do engine mods. But, I could drive that slow car 100% around a corner. Such fun!

Tyler I would love to take the challenge of restoring the Bentley. We recently finished restoring a 64 1/2 mustang and though it was painstaking and took a lot of time and money it was totally worth it. Originally was going to show it at SEMA but that was canceled. Will be taking it to Auction early next year.

I have owned a few of these and have learnt over time that you need to have a very good knowledgeable mechanic, I have one of those I currently own a 95 Bentley RL (very rare car) and 2 x bentley continentals a GT and A Flying spur they have both had over $30k spent on them in the last year alone, So all I can add is go into ownership with your eyes wide open and a big cheque book, There is nothing like driving a Bentley
