Martha was done dirty in her original season. For all she accomplished as a companion, it was sullied with every second and moment she was written pining over the Doctor. Thank goodness they gave her more and gave her due during subsequent seasons and Torchwood. Yet every time UNIT pops up in Doctor Who nowadays, she isn't even mentioned. Picture it: Kate and Martha owning whatever villain. It would be amazing.

I think it would make sense for the Trickster to return, especially with Harriet Arbinger naming him between the Toymaker and Maestro. It would also be interesting if Trickster was behind the Doctor's memory changing about Ruby's mum pointing at the sign. It would also make sense if he created the signpost since it kept fluctuating in the Units time window. Either that or we'll just have to accept that RTD made a ridiculous writing decision. 😄
Well... Lalla and Tom did live together and were actually married for 2 years, so Romana 2 coming back as the "Curator"s wife helping care for the exhibits would be interesting...

I'm sorry Ellie, but I think that, as much as we all enjoyed Alex Kingston's performances, The Husbands of River Song put a very definitive exclamation point on the end of the character. While we'll never know more about Jim the Fish or see their picnic on Asgard (maybe on New Asgard? :P), there is a real danger of undermining the emotional heft of River's story. For reference, a favourite book series when I was young was the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Douglas Adams finished his five part trilogy in 1992, but providing a very definitive end to the characters involved. Unfortunately, someone couldn't leave well enough alone and lo and behold; And Another Thing was released seventeen year later, with a story that not only undermined the end of the original series, but reduced the main characters to mere spectators in their own lives, which I'm sure is not something you'd want to see happen to River.
disagree. at the very least we need a special or two where River meets the 14th Doctor. Great for closure back to where it all started and it would explain why she recognized that face.
@@RedCaio That's fine, everyone's allowed their opinion. That being said, and I'm sorry for sounding argumentative, but I never got the impression she recognized Ten's face, as evidence by her remark she'd never seen him look so young. Remember Tennant was, until Smith, the second youngest (at that time) actor to play the Doctor, behind his father-in-law. The rest of them from the Classic Era were all in their forties or fifties. But again, that's just my opinion, I could be dead wrong. :D
The connection between rani and belinda is possible, as in the weeping angels game, rani is a key character and she talks about her cousin who is "away right now"
The Nightmare Man being reintroduced as a god of nightmares seems an interesting idea. And given I don't think The Curse of Fenric specifies what exactly the titular villain was, I think he'd be ripe for reinterpretation as well. And bearing in mind the mere existence of the Pantheon of Discord was revealed by the Trickster, I wouldn't be surprised if he makes a return appearance as the big bad of season 2 and/or 3. Who knows, given his whole shtick is manipulating people and rewriting existence to create chaos, maybe he was the in-universe explanation for the Doctor's controversial origin retcon?
Top things from expanded media I'd like to see on-screen: The Hoothi, The Eleven (or other number, if you know the character you know what I mean), The Chelonians, The Selachians, the Felinetta, Faction Paradox, The Ravenous, or The Parallel Sect. I'd also like Liv Chenka to be canonized on TV, either with Helen Sinclair or Tanya Bell, or both, meeting the current Doctor.
I was thinking what if they made the Doctor searching for Susan an entire series arc. It could start with the Doctor going back to Earth to meet up with Susan again, but she's gone. Susan's husband and kids tell the Doctor that she left for unknown reasons. They could have the episode be a sequel where the Daleks return, and at the end the Doctor flies off into space on his mission to find Susan.
Yes, YES, YES!!! All twenty (plus). I would welcome most any return of past characters (sorry James Gordon, but not you,) (but it'd be fun to see Stormageddon Dark Lord of All), but I'd like to see more and some answers about The Doctor's mother (?). (I don't know if Claire Bloom (aka Patricia Claire Blume) is still acting, but…). As always, thank you all so very much for the video. Plus any of "The Masters". (Yes, it's a time travel show, so…) (And I'd LOVE to see a story about Melody Pond (River Song) having a child, The Doctor didn't know about.) (Plus, plus… I think Ellie and Seán have earned cameos.)
What about Rassilon, The White Guardian, the Black Guardian, Victoria Waterfield, Nyssa, Jamie Mccrimon, Zoe, Jo Grant, Sergeant Benton, Captain Mike Yates, and Harry Sullivan? Personally, I think all these are a bit more interesting than Canton Delaware III, Dugen, Rogue, Harriet Jones (She was great, but so was her ending), and Grace Holloway.
@@DavidBeddard ive never heard of this 'big finish' group, are they UK only or something? (Im in Australia and only ever seen the main series, plus a couple of new series spinoffs)
I think the Meddling Monk could actually be really interesting. The first sort of leap into people of the Doctor's world. Would really show how the concept of Time Lords have evolved should he ever return.
ONLY agree half of these. My number one for decades now is The Rutan Host! The Rutans of Ruta 3!! Must have their shape-shifting electric eel arses on my screen again!! Beyond that I would welcome the return of Osgood, Jenny, The Mara, Rani & Clyde from SJA, Romana, The Trickster, and Martha Jones. I would like to see The Monk too, but played by Rufus Hound please! Also I will accept Susan ONLY if we don't do Carol Ann Ford the extreme disservice of negating everything she's acted in with Big Finish. You don't have to include it at all, but you shouldn't contradict it either. A good writer could make that work and not wrecking ball anything this character has done in-between. I'd rather Susan not appear at all if the plan is to just retconn all she's done after The 5 Doctors.
I normally hate the idea of Harriet Jones surviving, her sacrifice was so impactful and a trapdoor is just cheap. However, it being the plan of the Trickster does make it more palatable, because it would have to be undone to beat the Trickster
i just finished watching the sarah jane adventures to get my DW fix until christmas, and i need to see what the bannerman road gang are up to in present day, PRONTO! clyde being in the memory tardis gives me hope but cmon, i miss my girl rani too...
Brilliant episode as always! Also the Rutans vs Sontarans war was touched on quite a bit in the Doctor Who adventure games, more specifically the Gunpowder Plot where they both fight to steal two doomsday weapons that had gone missing in a crash
every time Ellie says ‘stranger things have happened’, a song of the same title by Foo Fighters comes to my mind, and Ellie’s words with that song’s melody in my head is something so phenomenal that i just can’t really explain.
@@mnewberry7055you're thinking of the wrong Jenny. OP meant Jenny Flint - the Jenny associated with the next two characters that OP mentioned (Vastra and Strax).
I would love to see the doctor's granddaughter susan return to doctor who, I think it would be really interesting to see how her life progressed without the doctor and it would give the doctor some well needed closure. The nightmare man and the trickster would be brilliant villains to introduce doctor who, they worked so well in the sarah jane adventures! It would be lovely to see other characters return like sally sparrow, osgood, the doctor's daughter jenny, the paternoster gang, romana, and nerys! 😂 OK, maybe not nerys. Also I would love it if the new companion belinda chandra was related to rani chandra! Great video, thanks Ellie and Who Culture! 😊😊
he might be one of the hardest characters to write for and currently limited to 2 big finish audio dramas but i really wanna see nobody no one come back, especially in a way that leaves death in the family canon or possible canon. that talking to the seventh doctor gets at the end feels like a very important stepping stone from manipulative seven to full of love eight
Osgood should be higher than 13 ngl, Osgood should be a common character we see, maybe not all the time, but at least as frequently as we see Kate tbh. The way they set her up, there are always the Osgoods, and tet we just stopped seeing her after Zygon stuff ended, and neither has returned. I'd love for either if the Osgood sisters to return and for them to be more common in this era of the mythos.
Not a return exactly, but finally bring to screen an antagonist who's been mentioned twice in classic Who by the 2nd and 6th Doctors. The Terrible Zodin.
River was overused imo, I think she should've been a character who came back occasionally, meeting each doctor at least once before getting her own spin-off with Jack
i cant say i agree with river coming back i love the character but her arc was so perfectly formed and told and the fact capaldi managed to find a way for them to spend so many years together on derilium was amazing and earlier in the same episode we see her list of all her faces mentioned in the library and it ends with smith its ultimately was allows for the first half of the episode and i feel if she comes back now there are too many questions and sure it could be a multi doctor story with capaldi with them during derilium but then it just kind of splitting too many hairs if they truely found a way to bring her back and maintain the perfect arc they told before im all for it but i cant see how
One of the great things about characters like the Mad Monk, The Rani, or Romana is that no one needs the original actors to bring back the characters. They are time lords, so regeneration and new faces are part of the deal.
I just hope Kamelion to return one day. He could have been the most iconic character aside the Doctor, but failed of technology. Today you could bring him back with animation. Imagine if, instead of creating Vlinx they brought Kamelion to UNIT and would be part of the events! He also could join the Tardis crew in the next season or make an own series for him!
Nightmare man would be a perfect doctor who villian to feed on the Doctor's dreams allowing to have mutiple cameos from villians, companions and even previous doctors
I think misses flood is romana that probably regenerated and possibly became human through the Chameleon arch to hide from something or someone but over time probably has forgotten about that until the doctor changed the past by now being the person who put ruby on the doorstep of the church
Mike Yates chose the environment over the military, so he was fired from UNIT and was never seen or heard from again. More please! King Yrcanos (and his wife Peri) might be dead or might be thriving, depending on which Time Lord declaration was a lie. Please give us more of them (while Brian Blessed is still around, because I can't imagine the role recast)
Romana could actually happen, since The Doctor saved Gallifrey, she could've left Gallifrey before The Master killed it all, and could you imagine, the newly refreshed bi-generated 15th Doctor, thinking he's alone but adopted, and with no one but he and himself (14) to talk to about it, and then suddenly Romana pops up, and shinanigans and deep feels begin, I think that could be incredible at this point in time.
Elizabeth Hurley would be amazing as The Rani. Her campy devious nature and dark, dry wit from Bedazzled as well as her campy character from The Runaways are two major reasons. Vanessa Kensington also seemed a shallower character on page that she added a lot to in Austin Powers 1 which I could see being the case for The Rani too.
Martha and the two Doctor Who daughters are the top of my list. A storyline I think might be able to be explored would be the return of the Timelords but not of Gallefry. I don't believe a people (Timelords) would not be aware of their impending end (but could not change it) - and prepared for an Arc of sorts. The Doctors bi-generation could be a result of the timelords experiments... a sort of unforeseen consequence... where they were working to maintain the Timelords through splitting them off and then sending them to a backup planet and building a 'New Gallefry' in e-space... hmmm. maybe that thought is just a result of pain meds 🤣... though I would like a multiyear (5 sounds right) were little teasers are dropped about the origins of where Doctor Who came from before the timelords acquired him.
Rose and her human doctor would be a great return. Imagine the Doctor in a tough situation then hears the TARDIS sound but it's reversed, then they step out "hello Doctor", to which the Doc says "Well, that's handy". Get it? Because hand regenerated into another... Cringy nerdy but cool and I want it
Talking about Fox Mulder... now that Disney is part of it - maybe they could do a crossover with X-Files (disney owns Fox assets) - with Dana Scully or both (though I think Dana Scully would be a better fit).
Stick around for a somewhat unsurprising ‘bonus’ entry 🤣

What came to mind when you said an American branch of UNIT was the American branch of Kingsmen in the Kingsmen franchise
The connection between rani and belinda is possible, as in the weeping angels game, rani is a key character and she talks about her cousin who is "away right now"
Matt Berry as the Meddling Monk. Hell YES!
Ellie, I was wondering if you are feeling okay when you got to #1 without mentioning River 😳 Great Little trick on us!!
Shame on you, Mark! 😂
I always loved Leela. One of the best companions ever and I feel she gets missed a lot when people think of companions
Danny Dyer in Doctor who......I'm in where's the petition 😂
Personally? I'd like to see Missy return tbh. Even if it's just a one off, she could return like how John Simm's Master returned in The Doctor Falls.
Oh absolutely want to see River return with out a doubt. I also would love to see Captain Harkness return.
(Yes, it's a time travel show, so…)
(And I'd LOVE to see a story about Melody Pond (River Song) having a child, The Doctor didn't know about.)
(Plus, plus… I think Ellie and Seán have earned cameos.)
Romana is in E-space. She left in Warriors Gate with K9 II. Another great 4th Dr companion!
It is fiction, so, as long as it's plausible (we are talking DW here), getting her out of E-space is not impossible...
@@igorschmidlapp6987 if the Dr were to re-visit E-space, and Romana and K9 came back, that would be a great story
If I hadn't heard the Big Finish spin-off series "Gallifrey", I would agree, but I have and it's just too good to allow it not to be considered canon.
@@DavidBeddard ive never heard of this 'big finish' group, are they UK only or something? (Im in Australia and only ever seen the main series, plus a couple of new series spinoffs)
@@thomaswilliams2780a company that does Doctor who audio dramas
I think the Meddling Monk could actually be really interesting. The first sort of leap into people of the Doctor's world. Would really show how the concept of Time Lords have evolved should he ever return.
He is very funny. His appearence in the Daleks Masterplan was for the time very special and I think, a new adaption could be so good like Missy.
I’d love to see the meddling monk come back as either Matt Berry, Mark Heap or Simon Farnaby
Ever since the show's return in 2005, every mysterious female character has been suspected by the fans of being the Rani.
And after 8's Big Finish she has met 8 and War
I really hoped Ruby's mother was The Trickster, I still hope he has a hand to play in all of that
I normally hate the idea of Harriet Jones surviving, her sacrifice was so impactful and a trapdoor is just cheap. However, it being the plan of the Trickster does make it more palatable, because it would have to be undone to beat the Trickster
Mad respect for how high up Martha is on this list!
So glad you included the Mara on this list.
i just finished watching the sarah jane adventures to get my DW fix until christmas, and i need to see what the bannerman road gang are up to in present day, PRONTO!
clyde being in the memory tardis gives me hope but cmon, i miss my girl rani too...
Brilliant episode as always! Also the Rutans vs Sontarans war was touched on quite a bit in the Doctor Who adventure games, more specifically the Gunpowder Plot where they both fight to steal two doomsday weapons that had gone missing in a crash
Yes! I thought I remembered them appearing in a game. Thanks for nailing down which one!
every time Ellie says ‘stranger things have happened’, a song of the same title by Foo Fighters comes to my mind, and Ellie’s words with that song’s melody in my head is something so phenomenal that i just can’t really explain.
Jenny, Vastra and Strax. Also River
Absolutely. Vastra and her crew deserve all the appearances.
Van Jenny regenerate now?
@@mnewberry7055you're thinking of the wrong Jenny. OP meant Jenny Flint - the Jenny associated with the next two characters that OP mentioned (Vastra and Strax).
That shot of Wilf in the closing moments. 😭😭🤬
WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT????7?
I hate susan
@@ClineAIno-one asked for you to speak such blasphemy.
@@TheNovaBridger It’s the writers fault they set her up really well and did absolutely nothing with her
Not only is the actor who portrayed Sabalom Glitz dead, but so is the character. Mel confirmed it in the 60th anniversary special.
He’s dead NOW. But in the past, where the Doctor can go……
he might be one of the hardest characters to write for and currently limited to 2 big finish audio dramas but i really wanna see nobody no one come back, especially in a way that leaves death in the family canon or possible canon. that talking to the seventh doctor gets at the end feels like a very important stepping stone from manipulative seven to full of love eight
Rogue is certainly coming back. Why else would RTD have him saying, “come find me”?
Perkins from Mummy on the Orient Express.
The Nightmare Man sounds like a relative of Freddy Kruger
Nicholas Courtney wasn't dead yet by the time production on The Impossible Astronaut and Day of the Moon had finished
Honestly, I would say the beast will be a really good one to bring up, especially with his whole pantheon thing
Not a return exactly, but finally bring to screen an antagonist who's been mentioned twice in classic Who by the 2nd and 6th Doctors. The Terrible Zodin.
Due to his roles in Battlestar Galactica, Supernatural and Firefly, please.
The Horror of Fang Rock is such a Call of Cthulhu scenario.
Ellie your videos are never long enough - another vote for River here and one also for Lorna Bucket and Osgood
I wish that WhoCulture talked more about Big Finish - bringing back Leela, the Meddling Monk, SJA cast - they've all been done there
River Song and Brian williams
I want Captain Jack back though that will never happen now without a recast
I just hope Kamelion to return one day.
He could have been the most iconic character aside the Doctor, but failed of technology. Today you could bring him back with animation.
Imagine if, instead of creating Vlinx they brought Kamelion to UNIT and would be part of the events! He also could join the Tardis crew in the next season or make an own series for him!
Martha Jones is my favorite companion. Yes, please.
Nightmare man would be a perfect doctor who villian to feed on the Doctor's dreams allowing to have mutiple cameos from villians, companions and even previous doctors
Valeyard, Brigadier Bambera, Dreamlord, and Chameleon.
I think misses flood is romana that probably regenerated and possibly became human through the
Chameleon arch to hide from something or someone but over time probably has forgotten about that until the doctor changed the past by now being the person who put ruby on the doorstep of the church
8:01 - If the Mara ever returns, I feel that Janet Fielding should voice the part, as a bit of an easter egg.
I want the Carrionites to return ! Especially with this supernatural theme to this new series, it would be a good idea.
Osgood needs to come back I love her dressing with different who gear I loved it
Elizabeth Hurley would be amazing as The Rani. Her campy devious nature and dark, dry wit from Bedazzled as well as her campy character from The Runaways are two major reasons. Vanessa Kensington also seemed a shallower character on page that she added a lot to in Austin Powers 1 which I could see being the case for The Rani too.
I want Earth to be invaded by the Varga plants from Mission To The Unknown. That episode scared the hell out of me when it was broadcast.
I would love to see the candy monster from the 7th doctor's adventure
The family of blood would be an interesting return
Rose and her human doctor would be a great return. Imagine the Doctor in a tough situation then hears the TARDIS sound but it's reversed, then they step out "hello Doctor", to which the Doc says "Well, that's handy". Get it? Because hand regenerated into another... Cringy nerdy but cool and I want it
I would pick Jenny, Susan, and Martha.
I love River as a character as much as Ellie does but IDK if her returning is a good idea. I feel like her story is complete
And Martha was a helper in bringing in the most iconic dr who most scariest villain the weeping angels
River, Martha, Jenny, Canton, Amy and Rory, captain Jack.
Talking about Fox Mulder... now that Disney is part of it - maybe they could do a crossover with X-Files (disney owns Fox assets) - with Dana Scully or both (though I think Dana Scully would be a better fit).
O 👏 ME 👏 GA 👏
With every passing season, I grow more and more baffled as to why he hasn't even been mentioned.
River Song, Romana, Jenny, The Rani, in that order.
