Liked before the voiceover even started! This was a special treat on this special day. Ellie expressed all the things I've struggled to put into words in the eleven years since it aired. That's not nearly as easy as she makes it look, just riffing off-script like that. But you really feel the passion she has for the show. It's very familiar to me. And let's not forget the unenviable task Danny had, piecing this together into a logical order, because you know what was actually filmed was quite a bit longer, and by the way, I would pay good money to watch the unedited version. That would be a good way to spend Doctor Who Day.
    Thank you for this.

In and outside of Doctor Who I feel that the level of writing for Day of The Doctor rivals Breaking Bad/Wire quality TV writing. The way it's able to feel as much like the 10th, 11th and War Doctor's story (giving each a deep arc in this that also deeper contextualizes their (or 9's for WD' s) futures at once without ever feeling like just 11 & Friends is in a word.... @@MarkRogers-vf3evI think about that all the time. Or they could've had like a two second flash of Night of the Doctor when talking about the War Doctor's burden, to really solidify that the Time War really is the sole reason this incarnation of the Doctor exists, and why his burden is so heavy and why he was purposefully forgotten. It just could've better shown within the actual anniversary special that the War Doctor did nothing before of after serving in the Time War.
But hey. I also just really would've liked to see my favourite Doctor in the anniversary special. Any chance for Eight to be in Doctor Who is a chance I'm rooting for.

Still one of my favourite ever Doctor Who episodes. Saw it in a packed cinema in Boston and have so many special memories - though The Curator's "I rather think you might" still gives me the most goosebumps. The audience's pin drop intake of breath before we'd even seen Tom was spectacular. Also, I've still got a 3D telly, and got to give a shout out to them filming it in 3D because it is even more jaw-droppingly gorgeous to watch in that format. Also, can we take a moment to look at the cinema box office on this ep too - It only had simulcast screenings yet it's total box office (more than £10m globally) meant it was quite literally the biggest thing at the box office in the world that day... and all from single screenings rather than dozens per day too! The Day of the Doctor?!?! D*** right it was! 😁

Excellent analysis (except the down (only for me personally, appropriately : I'd never heard of Gavin and Stacey)). Apparently Tom Baker spilt the beans about his appearance in the 50th on a radio program a bit before. Which I missed, so (personally) it was still a lovely surprise.
To add to the editing up: it was great fun seeing it in the cinema in 3D and impressive that they didn't do the usual trick of absolutely everything popping out of the screen at you (possibly with the exception of the Doctor's seeing the fez - and probably others that I've forgotten (let me know)). I vaguely recall Moffat talking about that in an interview. The 3D version is (or was) available on blu-ray. Luckily, the disc also has a standard 2D version: I have the disc and a player, but no 3D display device; 3D is dead (yet again - hey ho).
Elsewhere in the comments, people have noted with anguish the "my mum's Doctor was Tom Baker" comment. Well, *mine* was Jon Pertwee (I might have caught the end of Patrick Troughton: I forget). That makes me old, I suppose. Well, older than I was, at any rate.
Keep up the good work (and sorry for the plethora of parentheses (which alliterates awesomely, don't you think?)).
PS. Not all *actors* who played the Doctor at the time of the 50th were there: Hurndall did a First Doctor in one of the multi-Doctor anniversary specials after Hartnell had died. Picky point, I should stop now. But...
PPS. Re. sonic screwdriver. Wasn't the line "what are you going to do - assemble a cabinet at them?" a nod back to what River Song said when she and the Doctor were facing up to the Silence? I'm sure Ellie will know.
PPPS. This comment is far too long (and this doesn't help).

Tom Baker's return . Pure Genius. He was my doctor, But Tennant is up there with him.
Then you have the Legend John Hurt , who just by being in it suddenly upgrades it to another level.
Fantastic special . Made even better by the short before it with Paul McGann
Seriously pisses all over the 60th. That's 3 bang average episodes with a regeneration, Or should i say Bigeneration. ( give me strength)

12:01 You give these examples of famous actor casting and not being able to extract their previous roles. But look at Tennant. He had numerous famous and iconic roles behind him but almost instantly fit the doctor role so well.

I'm sorry, not being able to accept an actress in a role because she's too well known in a different role or even simply for being too well known period is a you problem. It's not the actress's fault nor the show's. Now if you'd said you didn't enjoy her performance, that would have been different. It's a bit like saying you can't see David Tennant in any other role other than as the Doctor, even when he's pretty much brilliant in anything he's in. They're actors, playing lots of roles is what they do and most actors don't want to be typecast. 1 down for Ellie.
Beside that niggle, your review was pretty spot on. And it's a credit to the episode for still delivering over 10 years on. 💙💙

The bike: It's the same one the Doctor says he rode in the anti-gravity Olympics in 'The Bells of St John'... so presumably the Doctor brought it out through the Console Room.

Do it right start a regular ups and downs series for classic who with An Unearthly child. plus it's first couple episodes that form the first story in total. On that train of thought first and final episodes of each doctor's main run are solid choices.

I would suggest finding stories that are not the most well known for these retro reviews. "The Invisible Enemy" might be a good one, "The Sensorites", "Planet of the Daleks". Not the worst, not the best, likely to have a mix of ups and downs. Then do "Time Flight". If you did "Sub Rosa" for TrekCulture, you have to do "Time Flight" for WhoCulture eventually.

    Couple more things,
the special with Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester Mc Coy was hilarious.
I have watched the 50th anniversary loads of times . i have watched the 60th once when it firsted aired that's it.

One of the things that is cool with this episode. It has a 3D version. For most people its a gimmick, but if you have the means to pipe this through a VR headset, it is spectacular when you see the paintings. And the flight of the TARDIS across London is great. It does a downside though, the “dream” sequence at the end with all the Doctors at the end comes off as extra flat after all the 3D sequences, and that’s unfortunate. And having Capaldi briefly there earlier and then not at the end seemed a bit odd to me at the time as well. I know they were trying to keep his look under wraps, but I thought that if you were going to include the attack eyebrows earlier, you should find a way to include them here. But I understand, spoilers/Easter Egg. But I mostly commented here just to mention about viewing this on a VR headset if you can get your hands on a version of it that way.. it really is spectacular. And it was an Easter Egg with the soldier the Doctor borrowed the gun from, he was in a webisode surrounding the special showing the last day of Arcadia and its fall. So it was neat to see him as a connector.

    Happy Doctor Who day 🥳🎉🎇🎆🎇
    Love this special so much
Everything flowed so well within this. You did not want it to end.
Ellie, I can relate. Tom Baker was my mom, and my grandma's favorite Doctor. She absolutely loved his performance during his run, and being a part of this gem.
This special impacts me in a different way this time around. My mom sadly passed away in July. My grandma passed in late 2008.
Every Doctor Who Day. I would watch with my parents, their favorite episodes. My dad also passed away this year.
My dad also loved Doctor Who. His favorite? #10 David Tennant. Oh but he also enjoyed Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi, Jodie Whitaker, and Ncuti as well. My mom did too, she loved every Doctor.
But David was that special one, delivered so much heart, feels and every emotion possible. As does Ncuti, even more powerful, and with a heart that is a treasure
Doctor Who has been a part of my life. And thankful to share my memories.
Lots of love to the entire Whovian fam 🫶

It would have been...different, I think. Certainly would have really doubled down on how important Rose was to The Doctor learning to heal from the horrors of the Time War via seeing Nine go through the horrors of The Time War and be the one who did what Four couldn't bring himself to do so many years ago.

14:49 Ellie: "This is something that Steven Moffat in particular is very, very skilled at doing. I mean, there's a reason that he was writing Sherlock. You know, it takes a very special kind of mind to be able to create a story that's made up of so many moving parts, and for it all to fit together at the end and make total sense. And nothing feels forced or convoluted."

How do you know the TARDIS doesn't have handholds underneath? How many times have we actually seen the bottom of the TARDIS? (Spyfall Pt 1 is about the only time we've seen it raised up, when the Doctor was working underneath it and draining the waterslides.
Also, the "All thirteen!" moment is great, but we never did find out _why_ Hartnell through to Ecclestone knew to BE there at that point, being pivotal to something they didn't know was going to happen. (I did wonder if we might get a moment in "Twice Upon a Time", where Capaldi's Doctor inputs something into Hartnell's TARDIS controls when no one else is looking, but that might have been an easter egg too far)
