Hello! huge video, I know. But don't worry! I've included chapters so you can jump around! And yes, I'm sure I made plenty of mistakes over the course of this video, but it happens from time to time, oops! And I did try my best to incorporate conflicting timelines, like with Tegan. After all, Power of the Doctor never exactly said she DIDN'T fight Sontarans with the Sixth Doctor ;) www.patreon.com/harbowholmes
Just to be noted, Steven was not the longest running 1st doctor companion, in episodes, stories or indeed real life months. That honour is held with Ian & Barbara who have 77 episodes to Stevens 46. 16 stories to Stevens 11. And served on the show from November 1963-june 1965. While Steven only served from June 1965-june 1966.
I wondered when I heard that, I was like “I had no idea Steve served the longest!” of the 1st Doctor companions as I always thought it was Barbara and Ian! And it was. ;-) but despite the few minor inaccuracies it’s still a fantastic video, having all these departures and where they’ve been in one place, and a great start at such documentation as I’m sure others will run with it and make more of these with the EU, alt time lines, etc documented as well (already have a headache, LOL!). That’s assuming it hasn’t been done before and if it has apologies to whoever (or whomevers) did but regardless, this video is all kinds of companions awesome-sauce!!! Oh and I can’t remember if it was covered - did K9 get covered as the 4 (or 5 with the K9 series) units he actually was? Actually I think he did, couldn’ recallfor sure, was hoping the tin dog would be at the Companions meeting with Luke Smith! And with River Song! I think a K9 should be the de facto parting gift for every companion of the Doctor, LOL! Seriously tho I was really hoping to see the cute little tin mutt during the Special, here’s hoping he’ll definitely make a reappearance for the 60th…and beyond! He’s the one companion that won’t visibly age (unless wanted for the story w/ rust, chips, etc) and should always be with the Doctor either in the innards of the TARDIS occasionally popping out for an adventure here and there when a dog is needed! :-) he needs to come back and with the passing of Bob Baker surely an arrangement could be made now for more permanent appearances for K9 on the main series (imagine him with Ncuti! Awesome!) and if not then Definitely on the upcoming spin off series, whatever they may be!
I mean. Sarah Jane having so many interactions with other companions and within the whoniverse after leaving the doctor just comes to show how she was the best character. No wonder her funeral was attended by so many
Couldn't agree more & she's still my favourite companion, A sad loss way too early. Sarah Jane & Harry Sullivan were the first companions I saw back in Tom Baker's first story back in 1974. School Reunion was a great return story.
I love how everything that happened in the actual show is like "yeah, okay, interesting, that's fine" and then you get to extended media and it all gets so crazy xD
Exactly. Even when ignoring the sometimes overly complex narratives of companions like Hex, looking simply at Charlie alone is enough to make one realize just how much more freedom expanded media has that complex continuities that the show doesn't have. To have a series of monthly plays come out featuring either the 5th, 6th, 7th, or 8th Doctors- To have Charlie travel with the 8th Doctor for so many releases, only to them depart and then go travel with the 6th Doctor is something the show wouldn't be able to do without wildly changing the flow of what they do.
Well given that he looks like an old 4, I don’t it’s supposed to read that the brig didn’t know, but rather that the curator told him to keep it their secret as to keep order to the timeline, with 11 being surprised when he called and learned of the brigadiers’ passing and for Kate to only be introduced to him when she met 11 in the power of three.
I've never delved into the extended Whoniverse, and after watching this, I probably never will. It's totally bonkers. I'll just keep remembering the companions as they were in canon Doctor Who.
He did say at the start that Jack and River are both far too confusing to add to the list. Any away Jack left the TARDIS in like 5 million or something and then somehow returned to earth in 2007 and was implied to die on new earth
This was actually a really interesting video. I loved it a lot. Well done on the hard work in making this video Harbo. I am sure we all appreciate the effort my dude xx
Susanne's departure in a future earth that never existed shows that the doctor causes time splinters all over the place and therefore there are versions of him that never died, which is why you get to see old incarnations all the time. It also explains why at least one iteration of everyone except Adric eventually attended Sarah Jane's funeral.
@@sanddagger36 Leaving aside for the moment Day of the Daleks in which the events of DIE get overridden by a bigger longer Dalek occupation, there is no evidence that three years of Dalek occupation of Earth did not become a fixed point in time. In fact it gets mentioned in several other stories as though the Dalek occupation IS a fixed point. In the Dalek Master Plan the Doctor tells Bret Vyon to tell the leaders of Earth to look up the history of the 2160s - "History will show how to deal with them (the Daleks)" 23 years later in Remembrance of the Daleks, the Doctor and Ace are in 1963 and Ace asks if the Daleks just want to conquer the Earth. The Doctor replies "Nothing so mundane. They conquered the Earth in the twenty-second century. No, they want the Hand of Omega" so clearly he recognises that for the Daleks, conquest of the Earth was something for another time. In Day of the Daleks, the Gold Dalek says "The Daleks have discovered the secret of time travel. We have invaded Earth AGAIN. We have changed the pattern of history." Notice the word AGAIN - referencing the original Dalek Invasion of Earth.
@@sanddagger36 Plenty of expanded media have the Dalek Invasion as part of their backdrop, backstory, or mentioned as a dark time in Earth's history. The books and audios are so integrated into my memory now, but I thought for sure the show itself mentions the Dalek Invasion in that way too, reaffirming, like that was necessary, that it all indeed did/does/will have going to of happened.
In one of the series of audio plays ay Big Finish Romana and Leela survive the time war because they send Gallifrey into a weird pocket of space time. Since the Timothy Dalton version of Rassalon (I think) protected Gallifrey from being destroyed and since the Doctor also saved Gallifrey I just like to think Romana etc are OK.
Sarah Jane claimed that Ian and Barbara never aged since the 60s, which is immediately contradicted by the Power of the Doctor. BUT, what if Ian aged rapidly after Barbara died, as it was TARDIS energy keeping them tethered and ageless.
Feels like the writers just wanted to get rid of them to tie up all "loose ends" but also feels very mean spirited since those characters got the short end of the stick in terms of writing
So, does that mean that when 12 saw Clara, Bill and Nardole before he regenerated they were all technically dead at that point in time, or did they die in the future and Testimony was able to recreate them in the present from its records? Just like everything else in Doctor Who it's all timey whimey and a little hard to follow. I would have thought Clara would have still been alive at that point and still traveling around the Universe 🌌 in her Tardis. I wish the Doctor could be there for her when she has to go back to Trap Street and reassure her before she has to die again. I do like that you refer to her as his platonic soul mate, that's exactly what they were to each other. 💕
Doctor meets all of them during First War - as that was where his adventure with First Doctor ended. Testimony can time travel. Also we have seen Clara's death. Her facing Raven was a fixed point in time, as it already has happened. Her existence before that, between one heartbeat and the other was a (non) life on borrowed time - and it only could happen, because her death pushed Doctor to action. She has to face the Raven - because we know she already did.
45:21 And Old Amy from The Girl Who Waited joined Faction Paradox... And yes, I did get that fact from Broke Canon. Their corner of the Doctor Who expanded universe is so batshit insane that I can only process it through Davis.
Wait, really? Is that true? I'll have to look into that, because I love the idea of joining disparate parts of the Whoniverse - like the EDA novels and New Who - together.
Why is Bill always left out? I liked Bill. Her drive to learn was what endeared her to me. [edit: additional comment]. Not that Bill was ignored here, but ignored in general in most Dr. Who posts about companions. She seems to be forgotten and I think she was pretty great.
Peri’s talk show is Queen of Worries. Right at the end of the story she sees Worrier Queen in lights and notes the similarity to Warrior Queen, having learned the fates of some of her counterparts just before.
Doctor Who can be quite dark but I didn't know there was so much nsfw level stuff in the extended lore. I'm impressed and disturbed at the same time. Well done, great vid
1:59 HE DID NOT BLOODY FORCE HER! STOP THIS LIE! She said she loved David and wanted to stay with him on Earth. All the Doctor did was sort out her guilt hangup over leaving her grandfather.
@@HOTD108_ It's all very well saying "Dare To Ruin The Moment," the problem is people trying to chop the Moment down to more conveniently ruinable size.
Just discovered your channel, and you did an Absolutely Amazing job compiling all this information and showing the stills and photos to illustrate it all! I knew almost nothing about the events of the first run (Doctors 1-8). And, oh my, we think Donna Noble had an awful fate…? Some of these companions went through such tragedy!!!😢
As someone who never watched the OG Doctor Who and I'll be blunt I have little interest in doing so mostly due to the visuals during that time period. I really appreciate learning about all these companions in the past and all these previous interactions from doctor to doctor. Thank you for making this video.
I know the visuals can take some time to get used to and are far from the visuals we have today but I encourage you to put the visuals aside and watch OG Doctor Who or "Classic Who" as it has become known as. There are some great stories there to be enjoyed. Yes there are some challenges along the way like the missing stories or at least missing parts of stories and some stories that are a bit sub standard but we get that with New Who too. I will say most stories are good and it's great to see what came before 2005. So if I have convinced you to give it ago I recommend you start at the beginning with "An Unearthly Child"
I say, get over it. Excepting a truly breakthrough new technique, CG has done that at this point. and has for the past 2 decades Pretty much Tom Baker and prior, outside of a few camera tricks, there was no such thing as CG. Once you look beyond that, there were some pretty good stories, not to mention some of their visuals, "They really did that with Bubble Wrap and green JellO??!?" The many times I've seen extruded aluminum dryer vent hose.... I think the props department kept it in stock LOL People worked with what they had at the time I remember when Doctor 1 and crew brought a plague of the common cold that wiped out half a space station
I'm fantasy author (published) and I can't begin to tell you how influential Leela was on me as a 10/11 year old back in the late 70s. Thank you for putting this video together. I knew noting of her fate in the extended universe.
her first appearance is the only part where i see her being polarising but i think it works in terms of her character growth. Catherine Tate's portrayal has always been positive and theres no hate i have ever seen outside the runaway bride
The David era, Jack, Sarah Jane, Rose, Sally, Martha, Donna, Wilfred, Jackie, Mickey, oh, on and on, gives me such a warm and fuzzy feeling. Probably the greatest series I've ever seen (even better than LOST!) When I fan girl, it is Serious 😁♥♥♥♥♥ Going to Disney!!?? What could be better!!
Come to that, there was no Sara Kingdom. Yes she is dead, but so were Katarina and Adric. What were the further adventures of her dust on Kembel, now a desert planet.
I feel with Clara there are still ‘missing chapters’ in her story. And her ending may not yet be written as seen. While she had to face the raven the Time Lords may have had other plans for her before the Master arrived and destroyed Gallifrey again. What those plans are remains unknown and with Ashilder with her we don’t know the end of her story either. I also was going to mention Grace Holloway and Chang Lee, but someone already did. However, Sara Kingdom is absent in this list. True she was only in one adventure, but she traveled in the TARDIS and went to multiple places.
Clara was the "impossible girl," so I felt like they just kept running her stories and finally decided, "I guess we have to sunset this companion." It seemed rather abrupt to an interesting character.
Man a lot of those stories are super fucked up and definitely make me want to stay away from expanded media for fear of my favorite companion being put in a mental ward, being r*ped, being abused, being in an unhappy marriage with a drunkard who comes home to her trying to fulfill his fantasies despite still looking like her extremely young self, or being turned into a FUCKING GARGOYLE AND DYING. Seriously though what in the absolute ever-loving FUCK is wrong with book authors and why do they always feel the need to make their stories so needlessly dark.
2:24, unfortunately, given these are novels by John peel, "fantasies" probably means exactly what you think. This is the same guy whose first doctor who novel was essentially a softcore porn and featured the doctor defending sexual assault when his companion expressed how disgusted she was after seeing some guy do it. Yeah, let's just say he's not the most popular wilderness years writer. I'm baffled how he was ever asked back given litteally none of his dr who novels have been received with any sort of warmth by fans. 33:57, was going to object to calling turlough forgettable... then I remembered that he totally was outside of his first and last stories, and it's only thanks to big finish that I think much more positively of him. I still maintain he was an incredibly interesting character when the writers actually remembered to do things with him, but unfortunately that wasn't often.
You know... with the number of companions the Doctor has had and the number of descendants from them it's somewhat odd that a new companion has never been a child of a former one. River Song excepted from that remark.
That's actually a pretty good point, I've always thought it would be cool to have a companion's child become a companion themselves. I mean, if they grow up hearing all about the Doctor, it would make sense for them to seek him out. The only other examples I know of would be Jamie's descendant, Heather from the Doctor Who Adventures comics, and Susan's son Alex from Big Finish. There was also a guy in Knock Knock who was supposedly Harry's nephew or something.
Or have it reversed - the Doctor has had numerous adventures where people basically accused them of making things worse, so what if they one day ran into a companion's descendant whose reaction to meeting the Doctor is "You bastard! You ruined my grandmother's life!"
@@SuperSongbird21 that's actually something else that I've always wanted to see. Especially given that most of the time the Doctor saves the day, then runs off before the clean-up can begin. I'd like to see the Doctor discover that things only got worse after they left.
@@TimothyCollins Very much so. I've also often thought it would be awesome to have a companion who starts out as the last person you'd think should be with the Doctor (a villain who accidentally gets dragged along in the TARDIS maybe) but hanging out with the Doctor ultimately reforms the character and makes them a better person.
Peri Brown really was tossed about a lot by the writers. I felt like in a lot of cases it was a personal challenge to see how much each writer could hurt her. She also started the show in Planet of Fire immediately drowning in the water for no reason and being tormented by the Master. Her second story also had her being pursued by a dude who wanted to do unmentionable things to her. The final ending is better, but it sure took a while to get there. Also, poor Dodo Chaplet. She was basically in the same boat with her being constantly tormented by the writers.
The period during Six was a hot mess because the head of the BBC absolutely LOATHED Doctor Who (personal issues I guess?) so they ended up having some really messed up mandates placed on the show that resulted in all the jankiness. IIRC most of the series was based on Gallifrey with the Doctor being put on trial by the Valleyard because their budget had been destroyed. I’d love to see a remake/do-over with Six and Peri where they get to be normal (as normal as the Doctor can be at least) because they both got shafted. ☹️ Dodo’s first biography sounds like some really angry fanfic where the author just wanted to torture her. That was horrifying and I’m glad they retconned it.

I've only watched since Chris E. and Rose came along, but it seems some of the information came from comic books and video I've never seen! Wow! You blew my mind with the video. Never knew Rose had a daughter. Never saw that on TV. Thought I had all of David Tennant's stuff on DVD with Rose.
I was getting confused, having just watched WHO over the decades on PBS from Buffalo, TVO from Toronto. Broadcast of the adventures was sketchy at best, the CBC broadcast the first season with Chris E. but then it moved back over onto Pay-TV. Yet by that time I had learned to use file sharing, torrents, transloaders and *Debrid sites whenever new episodes were available. So the reason, you all say, for my gaps in not knowing was there were extended media, like comics/graphic novels and the like, so that explains it. THANK YOU
Fantastic effort for the video, it’s really well done and my goodness there is a lot of history! I was particularly fascinated with the history of the modern Who companions !
doctor who timeline in chronological order from species point of view (for example racknos creating earth to money running out and earth being destroyed) always been interested in the historical timeline
48:45 Just to be clear, here - there _was_ an Oxford comma between "clubbing" and the phrase "and adopting cats together", right...? Because the idea of the couple going around clubbing cats and then adopting them is a little dark...
There's a reason so few companions appeared in that episode recently. So few of them were on Earth around early 21st Century. Rather than rack my brain, I can now direct people to this video. - Answer to all these listings as per the Toymaker "Well, that's all right then!" - Bloody hell, Dodo's life was a bit rough, so was Peri's! The Adric re-boot was a bit rubbish, should have just left him dead. - The only current update (2024) is Mel currently returned to Earth & working for UNIT.
Such a great and comprehensive video, thanks for putting this together. I have a pretty good handle on expanded media, but I still learned a few new things from this video. So many companions have a tangled Web of potential timelines across different media, so it's really helpful to see it all layed out in front of me. I'd definitely like to see more of these lore type videos. I think it would be too much of a nightmare to cover EVERY companion from expanded media, but if you're brave enough, maybe you could have a go at covering some of the most notable players from across the VNA/EDAs, DWM and Big Finish? (Maybe the IDW and Titan comics too?) Another interesting topic, if you're up to the task, could be trying to sort out the timelines of different enemies, working out the chronological order of their appearances and whatnot.
Thanks for the memories, old and loose threads neatly tied, bar the screams. And shock mini-drama at 3:25 - Tardis typo nearly blows disguise. Later, of course, it self-corrected, so no harm done, really.
That shocked me the first time I saw Adric die. I saw that episode as it came out, and Doctor who has a history of finding ways to bring people back from the dead. The next episode when he clearly was gone was hard to get as a kid. But it's nice to have the good guys die, from time to time, to create tension for the Doctor and crew. Like when K9 died after the doctor accidentally left a chocolate candy bar on the floor. (Could have happened)
this is a great video, i love exploring the extended media of doctor who and learning new things... shame k9 mk i and mk ii wasnt included as they are both technically 4th doctor companions but great vid none the less :)
Take a drink every time a companion: Comes out as LGBT Meets another companion from a different era Names one of their kids after another companion Has multiple possible futures/selves Has their memory erased
Oh my! Loved that. Well done! From where do you get your info? I only ever watched the series. So I feel that I have learnt a great deal. Would love to know what happened with Osgood. Is one still human, or are they now both zygon? It's not a criticism you understand, truly. Would love to know. She was a character that should have had more use. Along with madam vastra. But seriously, excellent work. Really enjoyed it.
Listening to the stories of what happens to Jamie and especially Zoe I am very grateful to 'Tales of the Tardis' as part of the 60th Anniversary as they have Zoe happily married with a son called James and Jamie has 5 daughters, both of them clearly having had good lives and are healthily in their 70s! They get their memories back without too much heartache! Thank you so much for compiling all of this, it's been fascinating listening!
Oh, how to ask this without spoilers… do you know for certain the conditions stated at 45:17 are true? For all we know, it’s some sort of veiled reality. Fabulous video! You’ve given me BF adventures to enjoy while we wait for the new episodes to come.
Also, I'm pretty sure there are exceptionally few additional stories with them because Fox owns the rights to their characters. Whenever the actors have come back for Big Finish, they have always played different characters because it's too expensive to get the licences from Fox for Grace and Chang Lee.
Okay - what I learned is that there have been a lot of novels where the author featured their favorite Doctor plus their favorite companion(s) and wrote stories without giving a flying fig about previously-established timelines. Then again, since the producers of the series apparently have adopted the same attitude, I can't blame them.
Very well researched and put together. I never followed Big Finish, novels, or comic strips to know what they were doing once they left. Most of this I never knew. There are some recent scenes of Nicola Bryant at 37.02 entering a Tardis, I dont know where they are from. What is McCoy at 38.50 with Bonnie Langford?
Eek, I feel like every companion got done dirty in expanded media. I'd rather they were left alone after they leave and we make our own stories with what happens to their lives.
The Brigadier cyberman thing is so interesting to me because I haven't seen pre 2005 Doctor Who so I just assumed that was a cyberman that went rogue. Just shows you can often pick up this show at any time.
I grew up on the old who, but they were super slow paced and often ran like 2 1/2 hours or so. They had more time to develop a story, but their pace was painfully slow and less humor in the old ones. New who balanced the show for men and women pretty well.
@@bl8388 yes, they were five ½ hour episodes at 5.30pm. A staple after school and before the 6 o'clock news. They were interesting and drawn out stories, a bit like Test cricket! I saw re-runs when I was little, as we were a few years behind the UK, so I grew up with John Pertwee and Tom Baker, before it started to get weird with Peter Davison, although even Baker started before I was born, which is how I know they were re-runs. The current trend of one or two episodes is hard to take and there are so many twists. There are some ridiculously overcomplicated plotlines and a lot to do with time distortions, where we really just want them to get on with it. I catch it late at night when off work, as their ratings have damned them to the wee hours.
Sarah Jane was the best companion. With Romana, Leela, Ace, Jamie and the Brigadier definitely in the top ten. My favourite though has to be Nyssa as my first crush. ❤️ Part of the charm of DW has been the diverse character of each companion, definitely one of the strengths of the show. I was lucky enough to meet several of the Doctors, companions, and crew when I was an over excited teen. All nice people to some or more degree, Nicholas Courtney was an absolute gentleman. Nichola Bryant seemed overwhelmed by fandom. Ed Bishop had fascinating tales from all of the shows he'd been in. I wish I had been old / mature enough to realise how lucky I was back then.
They really had to fuck up Donna's story like that? Her story was great and the end a finale, it was sad and it's what made it important, it had real consequences. Now its all just bullshit because she is actually fine and her memories are going to come back....
@@CashelOConnolly loss is important in a tv show, if everything ends happy there is no emotional weight to the scenes, and it will help people in real life when they lose thier grandparents, parents or another loved one, because sadly in real life we dont have magic to save them.
Odd, yes, an enemy, yes, I found him to be a rather interesting character, not often to find a companion at complete cross purposes to the Doctor. an interesting dynamic. Beholden to the Black Guardian and all. He redeemed himself in the end IMO Adrick, well, he tried, but his entire time was horrid, as was written, redeemed in the end however Another companion not mentioned, was the one who had a comms device implanted in his forehead, that was the worst one IMO, not redeemed
It was probably worth you mentioning that a brief UNIT character was played by Paul Darrow (Avon from Blake's 7 for any of you not old enough to remember or have seen the show with sets even more wobbly than early DW). Okay, this was just about companions but just one line? Or maybe another video with other famous faces in DW, from Paul Darrow to Prof Brian Cox.
Why didn't you include Grace Holloway and Chang Lee? Otherwise very fun, and I don't envy you trying to make sense of some of these timelines! Poor Ace with her many lives!
Two reasons they were not included. 1. They never actually travelled anywhere with the Doctor in the TARDIS so they don't really count as companions. 2. BBC whilst having the rights for characters like the Doctor, the Master and the TARDIS, they never had the rights to any "new" characters that appear in the "Doctor Who The Movie" those are still owned by the American studio who own the movie. Therefore no other media was allowed to feature them as the studio still refuses to give up the rights to use these two characters. The actors who play Grace and Chang Lee have both appeared in Big Finish media but not as Grace or Chang Lee, just as UNIT vault personnel. Hope this answers your question.
I remember reading a Doctor who book when I was a kid about an office building where the workers wore watches that could store time at the cost of their life so you could stay 25 years old but eventually you'd have to pay all the time you spent back Plot twist: The life steal was exponential so paying 20 years would age you to death

@@NewtonDKC the actor who played the doctor granddaughter is still alive
I mean. Sarah Jane having so many interactions with other companions and within the whoniverse after leaving the doctor just comes to show how she was the best character. No wonder her funeral was attended by so many
Farewell Sarah Jane Smith is honestly one of my favourite pieces of Doctor Who media. Literally EVERYONE is in the damn thing!
Couldn't agree more & she's still my favourite companion, A sad loss way too early. Sarah Jane & Harry Sullivan were the first companions I saw back in Tom Baker's first story back in 1974. School Reunion was a great return story.
My Sarah Jane 🙏 RIP Elizabeth
Such a cliché opinion
Sarah Jane was my favorite.. i remember being so upset when the doctor dropped her off in the wrong place!
I love how everything that happened in the actual show is like "yeah, okay, interesting, that's fine" and then you get to extended media and it all gets so crazy xD
The TV show really is just the tip of the ice berg, with expanded media being able to focus on elements that would bog down the TV narrative too much.
BB😊😊
Can I just say how fucking happy I am that The Curator visited The Brigadier in his final days. Even if he never told him that he was The Doctor.
@@bigwingedkuriboh Yeah I like to think that is true.
Me too. It put a smile on my face

The Brigadier likely knew.
Hearing that Joe Grant died in a house fire is truly heartbreaking, no companion should go out like that
Who came up with that I wonder? We just saw her in Power of the Doctor AND Katy Manny is still alive and well.
Tie-in writers love to be excessively tragic.
Joe is short for Joseph. The characters name is Jo Grant.

I'll just keep remembering the companions as they were in canon Doctor Who.
i feel like captain jack should have counted as a companion he was short lived but definitely was invited on
He did say at the start that Jack and River are both far too confusing to add to the list. Any away Jack left the TARDIS in like 5 million or something and then somehow returned to earth in 2007 and was implied to die on new earth
@@thor6519 my mistake must have missed that bit
not "short lived" by any means, for a guy who's practically IMMORTAL.
This would imply having to go over the lore of Torchwood TV show again, which I'm sure not many are too hot on lol
Same pretty much applies to Master, as at least in his Missy incarnation should be counted as companion.
"Attended Sarah Jane's funeral" is the Doctor Who version of "Was off-lined by the Cosmically Powered Starscream" in Transformers.
Both statements refer to nearly every possible character in the known universe

Susanne's departure in a future earth that never existed shows that the doctor causes time splinters all over the place and therefore there are versions of him that never died, which is why you get to see old incarnations all the time.
It also explains why at least one iteration of everyone except Adric eventually attended Sarah Jane's funeral.
How do you know it "never existed"? There's no need to retcon it for another 142 years.
@@kurtvanderbogarde8402 no other story about the future has the daleks taking over earth
A real companion would show up even after blowing up trying to disarm a bomb. Adric that means, you, boy.
The one annoying aspect of the "two" genocides of the Time Lords is that companions like Susan and Romana end up with sad or inconclusive endings.
This right here, is quality Doctor Who content.
Given the sheer runtime of this amazing essay, Harbo Jr bout to go hungry again.
I was always so confused how Mickey and Martha ended up together and how they ended up fighting sontarans at the end of time.
She’s mentioned in the specials
She's my favorite companion after Donna and then Rory. It's such a shame she only got a season :P
Peri’s talk show is Queen of Worries. Right at the end of the story she sees Worrier Queen in lights and notes the similarity to Warrior Queen, having learned the fates of some of her counterparts just before.
Okay... so erm... Writers of expanded media: Can we give the companions a freakin' break!?
No wonder they need a support group!

If i've learned one thing from this video it's that you do not want to become a companion. Even in the Classic Series
Excepting a truly breakthrough new technique, CG has done that at this point. and has for the past 2 decades
Pretty much Tom Baker and prior, outside of a few camera tricks, there was no such thing as CG.
Once you look beyond that, there were some pretty good stories, not to mention some of their visuals, "They really did that with Bubble Wrap and green JellO??!?" The many times I've seen extruded aluminum dryer vent hose.... I think the props department kept it in stock

He even beat Katarina's record for shortest-running companion.
@@SuperSongbird21 that would make a really fascinating companion to have... some fun stuff could be done with that.
Being the doctors companion is a double edged sword - go see strange new worlds but if your lucky only come away slightly damaged or worse dead
Dodo’s first biography sounds like some really angry fanfic where the author just wanted to torture her.

This must've taken a lot of work. Thank you!
doctor who timeline in chronological order from species point of view (for example racknos creating earth to money running out and earth being destroyed) always been interested in the historical timeline
48:45 Just to be clear, here - there _was_ an Oxford comma between "clubbing" and the phrase "and adopting cats together", right...? Because the idea of the couple going around clubbing cats and then adopting them is a little dark...
i wasn't expecting a spontaneous shenmue reference in a doctor who video, but i'll take it!
Man a lot of the companions went on to have pretty bad lives after meeting the doctor , worth it in my opinion tho
Great to see stable diffusion being used for telling the narrative
No, it's not being used
There's a reason so few companions appeared in that episode recently.
(Maybe the IDW and Titan comics too?)
Another interesting topic, if you're up to the task, could be trying to sort out the timelines of different enemies, working out the chronological order of their appearances and whatnot.
Thanks for the memories, old and loose threads neatly tied, bar the screams. And shock mini-drama at 3:25 - Tardis typo nearly blows disguise. Later, of course, it self-corrected, so no harm done, really.

Brilliantly done, loads of details laid out. Was interesting to listen to. Thank you
Thank you for showing me Adric’s death again. My favorite part is always that Jodie’s Doctor basically did what Davidson’s couldn’t

Fabulous video! You’ve given me BF adventures to enjoy while we wait for the new episodes to come.
I mean, it makes sense to me, given some aspects of their character, also the mother might remember the name and use it in honour?
Whatever happened to Grace Holloway and Chang Lee? Were there future adventures with either of them?
Yeah, my point, too - no Grace! I mean, if Hex gets mentioned, then why not Grace?
@@hinduismwithpremananddasbhagat Because Hex traveled with the Doctor, and Grace never did.
I love how he casually guessed the 60th and moves on 😂.

Part of the charm of DW has been the diverse character of each companion, definitely one of the strengths of the show.
Leela was always my favourite as a young lad ,she was very cool
Thank you! what a task to put that together!
It's absurd that the Doctor's granddaughter is just...gone.
And we just ignore the companions from the TV movie
I don't think they even count as companions as thet never travelled with the Doctor basically making 8 companionless (onscreen atleast) 😢.
They really had to fuck up Donna's story like that? Her story was great and the end a finale, it was sad and it's what made it important, it had real consequences. Now its all just bullshit because she is actually fine and her memories are going to come back....
It was great and tragic ending for Donna that felt right
@@CashelOConnolly loss is important in a tv show, if everything ends happy there is no emotional weight to the scenes, and it will help people in real life when they lose thier grandparents, parents or another loved one, because sadly in real life we dont have magic to save them.
@@umadbroimatroll7918 I 100% agree but Doctor Who seems nervous of showing it. It the main show Adric is the only companion too truly die.
Donna had the best exit in NeWho so it being undone is...
irritating
@@fruitloops2058 it stinks they’re doing that!!
I do NOT think Turlough was forgettable at all, he is still one of my favorite companions
Odd, yes, an enemy, yes, I found him to be a rather interesting character, not often to find a companion at complete cross purposes to the Doctor. an interesting dynamic. Beholden to the Black Guardian and all. He redeemed himself in the end IMO
Adrick, well, he tried, but his entire time was horrid, as was written, redeemed in the end however
Another companion not mentioned, was the one who had a comms device implanted in his forehead, that was the worst one IMO, not redeemed
Same here.
I always love seeing vids like this. Do more!
31:33 Whoa, where does this scene with Teegan come from? Ah.. A Fix with Sontarans! Need to find a copy!
Steven wasn’t the longest running companion of the First Doctor that was Ian & Barbra.
Suppose I'm a silly old person, but why did most of these stories move me to tears...
I remember reading a Doctor who book when I was a kid about an office building where the workers wore watches that could store time at the cost of their life so you could stay 25 years old but eventually you'd have to pay all the time you spent back
Plot twist: The life steal was exponential so paying 20 years would age you to death
thank you for putting so much into this its amazing
WELL, THAT’S ALL RIGHT THEN!
Wait, how was Steven the longest serving First Doctor companion? Ian and Barbara were on far longer by every metric I can think of.
You would be correct, I made a clerical error and didn't go back to check it. Steven was only a companion for 357 days while Ian and Barbara were there for a whopping 581 days. My mistake
@@HarboWholmes Alrighty, mate, absolutely no worries! Appreciate the honest reply and very much appreciate the video, which is something I should've led with in the first place. Keep up the good work, my dude! Been enjoying your Doccy Who reviews since way back.
I appreciate the kind words and thank you for the correction! For some reason I'd always had it in my head that Steven was around for ages. You learn something new every day :)
@@HarboWholmes Well, he was around for ages in the sense that he almost met every other First Doctor companion, missing only Susan, and Polly and Ben by only one episode, so I think that's where your confusion arose. Very understandable :)
@@HarboWholmes you made a mistake the actress who played Susan is still alive to this day, so technically the doctor granddaughter is still alive but never gave a return to doctor who on the screen.
I came to this video because it came up and figured I'd revisit Mel and Donna in the wake of the anniversary specials and already everything The Giggle wiped away is hilarious "I'M NEVER TRAVELING IN THE TARDIS AGAIN!" especially after hearing where Fourteen took her away to? Sure Jan, sure.
Did I miss Captain Jack? I think he traveled enough to be included.
in the intro he said hes not doing jack and river cause they're to timey-wimey
Wow that was a huge exposition dump! 😉
Excellent work as always! ❤️
So much of the expanded content is dire!
Fantastic video but just a quick correction: Tegan’s last name is pronounced JOvanka with a hard J, not “Yo”vanka. Great video!!!
And Traken is pronounced wrong by him, and so is Vislor, and it is grating, especially from people you know have most likely actually heard these words in show spoken aloud as intended.
@@R.senals_Arsenal Tell me about it! If I had a penny for every youtuber who cannot pronounce "Omega" correctly as heard in The Three Doctors and Arc of Infinity. I mean why do they not check if unsure? Hell, watching 8 episodes of Who isn't hard.
@@robalexander8065 it can be hard to find copies of episodes.
@@Jimmy911ism In the case of Three Doctors, there is Britbox, two DVD releases, Blu-ray. Not to mention it has been reacted to on TH-cam by several people.
@@robalexander8065 ah okay, thankyou! JB-HiFi shelves things alphabetically and as I usually buy such as Outlander, Poldark, Star Trek and The Walking Dead... The Dr Whos would be a few yards over in the D section🤦

Jamie and Victoria were my favourites and Jamie was killed in battle after his memory was wiped..
Tales of the Tardis
Wow what confusing synopsis these become once you start including non-tv material, you probably should have just stuck to cannon from official TV series(s)
I’m not sure if you covered this because I’m 25 mins into the video but no one ever talks about the time the doctor had a daughter she died then got up at the end ? What happen
Idk but Big Finish brought her back
You absolute legend Harbo! 👌
