Java If you think it's a "dumb action game," then you apparently skipped every cut-scene, and played the bulk of the game with the sound off. This game has some of the snappiest, most real and emotional dialogue in any game I have ever played. The characters are written with wit, humanity, confliction and emotion. There is an especially poignant part near the end that I always watch with the volume up, filled with tension. The game mechanics definitely do not encourage you to go in guns blazing, since only a few shots from enemies kill you. Stealth is still the number 1 advantage, and there are multiple scenes that essentially *cannot* be played without utilizing some stealth.

There is a big plothole nobody can seem to explain: How does Sam see in the dark? I understand how the player can due to the black and white mechanic but Sam was only able to be in the dark if he had goggles in prior games, and the entire game is spent without them. This game is simply awesome I finished it about 3 times and i just can't get enough of it. it is really one of the best games i've ever played in my life
Fans of SC seems forgot that Sam was full rage in here, things change after New York and he was looking for her daughter's death, he went into Bryan Mills (Taken) to find the answer, the part of Reed who try takeover the government was never become his concern on first place until Grimm came to him with using Sarah as leverage and Sam didn't have option but to help Grimm.
..."nothing like the old Splinter Cell games, which is a good thing..." Nope. Blacklist is actually much closer to the original formula and is all the better for it. Conviction was an overblown, generic action game that abandoned everything the Splinter Cell series had built it's name on. The old games were popular for a reason and the identity crisis that Conviction suffers from really hurt it. Functionally great, but it is NOT a Splinter Cell game
In my opinion it makes sense to create an action game, since sam is angry. Think about it: his best friend and daughter are dead, and grim, one of the people he trusted the most, lied to him for years. If the character development goes like this, it makes sense to make something more action.
I agree in many points, seeing as I adore stealth games. But the big thing that makes this my favourite Splinter Cell game is the story. Albeit short, the rage and emotion driving you through the game is unmatched. And I am one of those crazy suckers that play games for the story. :D
Also in a game about being stealthy going guns blazing should never deserve a reward. It is a stealth game after all. Chaos theory knew this and rewarded going through the entire thing unnoticed.
You know it's really annoying seeing people give the game such a hard time. Sure, it's different, so what? I guarantee if they would've made another, stand in a dark corner waiting for your enemy to walk by type of Splinter Cell, people would have been complaining the game is too similar to the previous 4 games. The series needed a change like this for at least one game, and it's at least a hell of a lot better than Double Agent.
“No more watching AI walk around”. Yeah that’s basically what a stealth game is. Not. You learn their patterns and find new ways to take them out. Conviction doesn’t offer any freedom to be non lethal or completely ghost through a level.
Decent game, awful Splinter Cell game. From the moment I first saw developer interviews and early game play I knew this series was dying. Splinter Cell at its core is about completing your objective as stealthily as possible. Entering and leaving without leaving a trace that you were there. THIS is why Chaos Theory is regarded as the milestone of the series. Every upgrade to the game focused on stealth. Better camera, better gadgets, wireless hacking, upgraded enemy AI that inspected every out-of-place change, amazing muilti-path level design......I could go on. Detection was avoided at all cost. Enter Conviction. Sam Fisher is now Jason Bourne. He scales walls and traverses ledges as if he has suction cups attached to his fingertips. Altercations are encouraged due to the mark and execute mechanic. Sam does things that he highly advocated against in previous games. In Chaos Theory's training video's Sam clearly states how he's seen more people die in doorways than anywhere else, advocating caution and inspecting the other side via snakecam. Here comes Conviction where Sam is barging through doors and shotgunning people down in dramatic fashion. I'll admit the game is fun, but it is not the Splinter Cell that people wanted. This is where the mainstream curse really hit this franchise. Blacklist tried to be stealthy whilst keeping the action intact. It's a better game, but still failed to capture what Splinter Cell is about.
David Fouts I call bullshit there is a stealth aspect to the game they just made it more difficult but with practice you can do it I will even upload gameplay to prove it
It's a pretty good game on its own, but it just isn't Splinter Cell. Previous games (especially Chaos Theory, which many fans consider the apex of the series) allowed you to choose whether to sneak and remain hidden, or take the brute force assault approach that is the only option in conviction.
Busternutt69 Bullshit. I just got to a part in the game where I almost sneaked through to the end, but there was a dude I couldn't get past. I had no option to lure him away, and when I put him down, there was no way to hide the body.
I think the graphics are already pretty good, so an HD remake would change much. Maybe later, when we can't tell apart game graphics from CGI, or even live action.
CoLomBiaSauriO Double agent is the "worst" one, and the one that deserves a remake the most. I still like it very much. Conviction's mark and execute is cool, but it is a win-button (which take something good out of it)
Anthony Bay Okay it was still way better than conviction, I didn’t get a splinter cell feel when I played blacklist but gameplay wise I like it way better than conviction
Once again, Splinter Cell turns up trumps with Conviction. I would say that the emphasis on making it more a shooter in nature was a daring decision for the devs to make, splitting the SC fanbase, but I considered it a wise move as often in previous titles I found Sam Fisher verging on incredulously clumsy when dealing with enemies; Conviction was much more fluid in this regard, and there was still the player's option to exploit shadows, climb pipes, shimmying, and so on.
Splinter Cell Conviction was a great game in the series, better than Blacklist. a very fun game, a lot more action, but kept the espionage element and making Sam Fisher into a Jason Bourne type spy was pretty cool as hell. I own all Splinter Cell games [not Blacklist], and I got them signed by Michael Ironside at Days of the Dead Chicago in April 2024. 1:13 Sam sure Will Smith'd Anna 😅
I didnt personally like this game. I love the Splinter Cell series. I played them all except Double Agent. And this one was my least favorite. I love Chaos Theory and Blacklist so much. Idk why everyone hates on Blacklist i thought it kicked ass, but i guess thats just me. Either way needless to say i was soooo disappointed by this game.
Cure Optimism Ill agree with u on that. But i dont see that being reason enough to not like a game. Not to bash on Michael Ironside cuz hes fantastic but i never rlly saw Sam Fisher's voice as a defining characteristic like a lot of people. So it didnt bother me to quite the degree it did others.
I hope Blacklist isn't the last one, and I hope the make one with a bit slower pace like the old ones. Still a fluent and agile Sam - just a much more realistic one. PS: Please keep the (seperated story) awesome co-op next to the campaign.
This game is definitely worth getting. Most people seem to hate this Splinter Cell, but I think it's pretty good. It's really easy, that's my own negative about it. Too easy, too short.
While the story mode is rather short, the Deniable Ops mode and Multiplayer modes will never get boring. There are challenges to beat on each map that give you points to upgrade/buy weapons. There are like 6 different game modes as well as like 8 maps that each take like 20-30 minutes to complete. Plus the coop story and multiplayer modes that allow you to silently stalk each other in the dark. It's a cheap game for $13 bucks and it was definitely worth it. Only downside is that not many people
I only have one more Splinter Cell game to buy, and in the last week I been buying them starting with Splinter Cell and bought the next one in the series and earlier today I bought Conviction and I will buy Blacklist tomorrow. I'm playing on Series X, have the Series S and One X aswell along with XB1. The only one I didn't get is Splinter Cell Essentials which is for the PSP. I had a PSP but eventually sold it. I love the Splinter Cell series and hopefully we get a new one soon for the new gaming systems
Re-playable? How can a fucking one route/one option game that strays away from all the good things about the series be re-playable? 9.3 LOL. Thats hilarious.
You can"t trust IGN completely b cos its not a private reviewer like Angry joe,and as for marking enemies with red and then hit the Y button for an instant kill is"nt THAT cool!
CraziBoi94 Well, I liked it. The thing that I liked the most are the side missions, with archer and kestrel. Those levels are incredibly replayable, and for it's always fun to try to make 100% invisible kills.
This game got some really unjustified hate when it came out. Gameplay was silky smooth, and I dug the style. It wasn't as open ended as the other games, I suppose, but that's about it. Free with GWG next month, so I guess I'll see how it holds up.
Me too...the controls and animations in this game were butter smooth even for stealth gameplay...In previous games the movement itself made you feel like 70 year old
This is where its at. I just finished Blacklist , and well , its really the same game with some features added and some removed. What differs is the story , witch is personal in Conviction , and more military / spy in Blacklist. Conviction got me more into it because it had some really minimalistic details like holstering your weapon and stuff like that. Blacklist really didn't have the details to get me into the game , but it sure had a longer playtime and some fun levels. Both are great games.
I liked all the splinter cell games except this one. im playing black list now and im glad they went back to a chaos theory/ more stealthy play style. I also like how it gives you the option to stealthy or just go in guns blazing. black list is definitely a good buy
I played Splinter Cell for the realism and stealth that demanded your attention to detail to stay alive. No killing half an Army of people by yourself ala 007. You combine the arcadey fast movememts with the ability to take everyone out by yourself in a few seconds and this is the game that made me become disenchanted and lose interest with the franchise.
The best thing about this game is it blends action and stealth so well without losing the stealth or dumbing it down hopefully when blacklist comes out they fix the problems with this game and from the trailer it already looks like they made the gameplay even better
@wavestrikerr Yes the HDD and SSD do make a difference in loading times but that is only for the initial startup or loading time of the game, after that the computer and its components pre-loads what it thinks is going to be the next accessed information into caches which is faster than RAM, but much smaller. But this has virtually no effect on whether your computer can handle and process the 3D graphics of a game, so thats why noone really bothers talking about HDDs an SSDs for min requirements
I've replayed the whole story multiple times and still play to this date. I think the difference is people's perspectives of time passing by. I thought it was so short and enjoyable "I might play that again!" Granted I'm still playing the originals right now as well. Literally. I just love the entire series, the books, the story and the games. I'm probably going to enjoy Blacklist too.
I just played the uncharted collection in my PS4 and I can say something for sure about the last generation of consoles: The kings in the third person shooters were Conviction, Uncharted 2 and Gears 3.
@HyperVegitoDBZ I agree partially. In Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory (my favorite), there was always a way to beat the game by sneaking past everybody and not getting detected. In this game, its more assault based and alot less sneak. Most situations end up with 10 guards in 1 area making it nearly impossible to sneak by them all. I still liked the game and play the multiplayer occasionally but i miss the pure stealth of chaos theory. I also miss the secondary fire on the sc pistol.

..."nothing like the old Splinter Cell games, which is a good thing..." Nope.
COnviction was innovative and fresh, a true next gen game. And it suceeded.
Conviction felt like an episode of '24'. I'm not sure if you guys can relate.
If anything id say double agent was the worst in the series.
_Stealth is no longer about moving slowly._
The exact reason Splinter Cell died
I don't get it. How's having more options to play a game bad?
Because I H̳̩͈͛A̖̲ͮ̓T̝̎̅ͣE͈̝̗̊ You u should just play the first splinter cell that was a stealth masterpiece
Slower gameplay doesn't mean better stealth. And again I'm wondering why having more options is a bad thing?!
Also in a game about being stealthy going guns blazing should never deserve a reward. It is a stealth game after all. Chaos theory knew this and rewarded going through the entire thing unnoticed.
This is my favorite splinter cell.
This game is a master piece ahead of its time
You know it's really annoying seeing people give the game such a hard time.
The PS2 version of Double Agent is way better than this, this barely even looks like a Splinter Cell game.
“No more watching AI walk around”. Yeah that’s basically what a stealth game is. Not. You learn their patterns and find new ways to take them out. Conviction doesn’t offer any freedom to be non lethal or completely ghost through a level.
I think Iraq mission was cool. It's a plus. Loved the sniper mode! The whole landscape was awesome too..
@feepque
I like that they included it. As a fan of the Splinter Cell series, I was overjoyed to learn a bit of Fisher's back-story.
Well blacklist sure made up for that
It sure would be amazing if they used the power of today's PCs and consoles to make a true stealth game along the lines of Chaos Theory.
David Fouts I call bullshit there is a stealth aspect to the game they just made it more difficult but with practice you can do it I will even upload gameplay to prove it
RadioactivFly Double Agent for 6th gen was kinda the sequel for Chaos Theory
Whatever nostalgia tard
I prefer the classic stealth but this game is still awsome
for me this was the best splinter cell so far just everything about the way it plays mark and exevute the pec challenges
Anyone watching this because of the July gwg on Xbox?
OmegaThe 1 ayy
GAMES WITH GOLD CREW!!
AbsenThunder 84 Same reason I’m here
Yuh!!
Feels wierd reading comments from so many years ago lol
Andres Cristo ummm we just posted these a week ago
Good job, friend! I have not played many Splinter Cell games, but I absolutely loved Conviction.
Why can't game developers these days make a game good like this...
+JuEon Kim laziness
watchdogs?
hadi farrukh not that great of a game
It sucks that tom clancy died
he dident
Nate Ortega mmh
F
i wish hitman game and this game would combine
It's a pretty good game on its own, but it just isn't Splinter Cell. Previous games (especially Chaos Theory, which many fans consider the apex of the series) allowed you to choose whether to sneak and remain hidden, or take the brute force assault approach that is the only option in conviction.
This review did not take that into account at all
I agree with you wholeheartedly just played it and it didn't really feel like splinter cell
i played this entire game in stealth mode. quit lying
Busternutt69 Bullshit. I just got to a part in the game where I almost sneaked through to the end, but there was a dude I couldn't get past. I had no option to lure him away, and when I put him down, there was no way to hide the body.
Freddy then kill him in a place where he wont be seen. i cant be the only one in the world who has done a stealth run.
The Iraq level was so shitty, oh man that sucked. This games feels like a Max Payne and not like a Splinter Cell game.
what are u talking about the iraqi mission was pretty good
Awesome voice acting!!!!!! "Not too shabby!"
This deserves a HD Remake. This game and psi ops: The mind gate conspiracy, are two games that are seared into my brain with unforgettable excitement.
I think the graphics are already pretty good, so an HD remake would change much. Maybe later, when we can't tell apart game graphics from CGI, or even live action.
CoLomBiaSauriO
Double agent is the "worst" one, and the one that deserves a remake the most. I still like it very much. Conviction's mark and execute is cool, but it is a win-button (which take something good out of it)
conviction is awesome, blacklist was disappointing.
Doctor Gordon both were great
yes but blacklist was still disappointing :)
Nah blacklist was way better
Slay Blacklist failed to be a SC game, the devs of Conv. Said themselves that they CHANGED the "routes"
Anthony Bay Okay it was still way better than conviction, I didn’t get a splinter cell feel when I played blacklist but gameplay wise I like it way better than conviction
Best game ever they need to remaster this one
one of the best games I played on my Xbox 360.
Is this review sarcastic or does he actually mean the bullshit he says?
The Drunk Knight Everything he says rings exactly true with me, so I am presuming he is being sincere.
he is right 100 %
Once again, Splinter Cell turns up trumps with Conviction.
4:20 "adapt or die" i wish that happens with call of duty
Nope. Still going strong haha. XD
this game is more than awesome :)
Splinter Cell: Blacklist is the most enjoyable!
To mike darkness.. I thought the exact same thing but just recently gave it a try again and it's quite a good game. Anyway just my opinion
I didn't think any splinter cell could top chaos theory but this was incredible one of my top 10 games of all time
I hope Blacklist isn't the last one, and I hope the make one with a bit slower pace like the old ones. Still a fluent and agile Sam - just a much more realistic one.
PS: Please keep the (seperated story) awesome co-op next to the campaign.
It's on steam for 4.99$. should I get it?
Hellz yea. Just bought the other 3 older ones too just for the heck of it.
spambryan17 I got it! Quite pleased with my purchase if I do say so myself
Yes! you won't regret it, trust me. I bought this game while at BestBuy two years ago, best $20 I've ever spent on a game.
Only downside is that not many people
Bring back Ironside! Blacklist is a good game but I can't stand the voice change, its just not the Sam Fisher I grew up with! Pissed! lol
I love it. 10/10.
RappingRain me too...!!!
This game didn’t meet the expectations when compared to earlier instalments..
pandora’s tomorrow, chaos theory are best in my list
But it's like playing as John wick
any one here due to games with gold
yep. Here's one.
what do you mean? this game has not been free with gold
Shiroyasha it is now
Yeah.. & it has been on FGWG before! I think I might give it another go.
When you come for a review because this went to Xbox Gold and you know you haven’t played it
I only have one more Splinter Cell game to buy, and in the last week I been buying them starting with Splinter Cell and bought the next one in the series and earlier today I bought Conviction and I will buy Blacklist tomorrow.
This is an utter embarrassment to the franchise, as a game it is good, but as a splinter cell it's absolutely horrible..
Matthew Gonzalez Like i just said, AS A GAME, it is good, but it shouldn't even be named a splinter cell
Re-playable? How can a fucking one route/one option game that strays away from all the good things about the series be re-playable? 9.3 LOL. Thats hilarious.
fullmetaljaco Hmmmm *CR(Y)SIS*................
You can"t trust IGN completely b cos its not a private reviewer like Angry joe,and as for marking enemies with red and then hit the Y button for an instant kill is"nt THAT cool!
Its replayable becaese is fun. If its fun youre going to play it a lot
Nikola Angelov Playing SC since the beginning, it was far from "fun". More like "WTF are they even doing to this game?"
CraziBoi94 Well, I liked it. The thing that I liked the most are the side missions, with archer and kestrel. Those levels are incredibly replayable, and for it's always fun to try to make 100% invisible kills.
this is by far my fav. game ever. ive played through it probably 20 times
This isn't my Splinter Cell.
Best SC game.
This is my favorite game of all time I want it on the backwards compatibility I replayed story mode 6 times 2 times in each difficulty
Epic gameplay
This video is fantastic, if you imagine it's David Spade talking...
"ThIs Is NoT a SpLiNtEr CeLl GaMe "
- every annoying fanboy ever
Best splinter cell game
This game got some really unjustified hate when it came out. Gameplay was silky smooth, and I dug the style. It wasn't as open ended as the other games, I suppose, but that's about it.
Free with GWG next month, so I guess I'll see how it holds up.
Me too...the controls and animations in this game were butter smooth even for stealth gameplay...In previous games the movement itself made you feel like 70 year old
Xbox games for gold anyone?
got this game for 89 cents at GameStop. Definitely this the best splinter cell game I've ever played. Incredible!
I'm waiting for it to be backward compatible
Totaly deserves a remaster.
agreed. this game is fuckin underrated, imo it's better than blacklist
Derp
Just got it with XBOX Live Gold.
Fuckin best Splinter Cell/Stealth game ever.
Well actually everyone dies at least twice in the story mode sooooo
Take away the Splinter Cell name and Conviction would make an excellent John Wick game.
The best thing about this game is it blends action and stealth so well without losing the stealth or dumbing it down hopefully when blacklist comes out they fix the problems with this game and from the trailer it already looks like they made the gameplay even better
Heresy to put down what made Splinter Cell Splinter Cell
@wavestrikerr Yes the HDD and SSD do make a difference in loading times but that is only for the initial startup or loading time of the game, after that the computer and its components pre-loads what it thinks is going to be the next accessed information into caches which is faster than RAM, but much smaller. But this has virtually no effect on whether your computer can handle and process the 3D graphics of a game, so thats why noone really bothers talking about HDDs an SSDs for min requirements
I've replayed the whole story multiple times and still play to this date.
I think the difference is people's perspectives of time passing by.
I thought it was so short and enjoyable "I might play that again!"
Granted I'm still playing the originals right now as well. Literally. I just love the entire series, the books, the story and the games. I'm probably going to enjoy Blacklist too.
this is the only good ign reviewer
XD You said man.
I just played the uncharted collection in my PS4 and I can say something for sure about the last generation of consoles:
The kings in the third person shooters were Conviction, Uncharted 2 and Gears 3.
Chaos Theory will always be my favorite, but this one's a strong 2nd.
