Allotment Diary : How to grow Chillies easily : This years Chilli Plants

  • Just a quick video about how I grow Chillies.
I'm by no means an expert but I did have a really good crop this year and this is how I did it.
Treating them mean when starting to flower and then feeding them well once the chillies had set, plus growing them in pretty rubbish open structured compost seems to be the key.
I prefer the more ornamental types like prarie fire but Joes Jong was a bit of a freak plant with huge chillies.
I think the prarie fire are about 50000 ,the Joes Long 15000 and the Habanaro 250000 on the scoville scale of chilli heat.

It's absolutely crazy how many video's are out there making growing chilli's so bloody complicated. I'm pleased one of my favourite youtubers has one though because as usual you make a clear and concise video without all the bullshit. Cheers mate.

I keep coming back to this video as it's the most straightforward and helpful advice out there. It's my 2nd season of growing chillies - all this worked last year but now I know what I'm doing it's still useful to see how you did it. I've a couple of Joe's Longs this year and the prairie fire was so good in 2021 that I've a few of those too. Also having a go at Padron peppers as well as they are great fried and salted.

Great information :) I found out the hard way that high ql peat based soil (which retains moisture well) stunts their growth terribly, and that too much water will cause problem, even too much moisture in air! Your chilies look wonderful!

I've found that the soil (heavy clay retaining moisture) we have in south wales is chillies worst enemy but I have also found that the chillies grow much better in really poor compost that can drain easily ,so normally I use coconut coir and grow them in pots on a window.

I've just put some cayenne, jalapeños and habaneros on to germinate, they've been lying around for years so thought I'd stay early and if they're pay iti can start afresh. But some of the cayenne are starting to pop out, need to get my ass in gear and get some pots.
Only hope mine end up as good as yours...

I've tried growing some little chillies, sowed them on March 6th but didn't have a good 4 inches of growth until June time. Come end of July I've had loads of flowers...probably around 60 between 3 plants. It's not the end of August and after bringing them into the conservatory one plant has died completely and the other 2 are on their way out I think. I've fed them water when the soil has gone dry and I've given them tomato fertiliser probably once every 3 weeks. Has the season gone for me? Will I have to wait until next year before I can grow some more? Your video has offered a lot of great tips! Thank you+

I do alright with chillis but I find with peppers that I run out of summer before they ripen although the f1 types are earlier and more compact. They are perennials and can be overwintered although it may be easier to start again with seed.

Nice video. My problem is not germinating but getting the chillies big enough to start pruning. Most somehow die off after the first two leaves are out. I put the soil into plastic bags, put seeds in, they always all germinate but then they dont develop any further. Maybe its too warm...here its 35degC and 45 in the sun.

    • @Miko_Jones
      @Miko_Jones 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

+Ullimately Sounds like you might be suffering from "Damping Off" disease, a fungus that attacks the soft stems of seedlings.
Cheshunt compound is the classic cure if you can get hold of any, but any fungicidal treatment applied just as the seedling start to show should help and don't over water, keep the compost as dry as you can get without letting them wilt, keep it moist not wet.

  • @tennyson23

You didnt say if and when you top them? I can see that you have done it, maybe around May time?
I grew Red Missile last season, and the plant did really well in good compost, and lots of tomato liquid feed. Then around August I shocked the plant with low levels of water, which incourages the plant to produce more flowers, as you said, and to divert moisture to the fruits instead of the stems and leaves.
