    Have re-edited this film in HD as one of the fundamental things you can do to affect the size and taste of your chilli crop is to use the right size container and no time is more pertinent than now.

      i know that the ideal container for basically everything medium sized to large is 20 Liters/5.28 Gallons, period.
      but one can grow Peppers in a 1.58 Gallon container or 6 Litter container.
      the key is always the potting mix, and how you fertilize it weekly !

    I wouldnt pot on until they are about a foot tall because keeping them slightly constrained makes them flower. Its the balance between constraint and then allowing enough room to give you a heavy crop.

    Learned a lot from the video, thank you! My question is, is it better to re-pot the chili plants as they grow bigger? Or just plant the seedlings into the 10 liter pot right away? Thank you!

    • @TheDuckofDoom.
      @TheDuckofDoom. ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no harm to the plant by sprouting seed right in a large pot, it would grow well. However, for most folks repotting is better because the small pots can make better use of limited indoor space and light in the late winter and spring. And moving large pots in and out every day when hardening the plants is a chore. The largest pots can just stay outdoors.
      normally my sequence is germination plug; one or two indoor pots sizes; then final outdoor pot. The tray of plugs fits in my warm box [I also use it for proofing bread] and the indoor pots fit in front of my window and when the coldest nights have passed they fit in the unheated greenhouse.

I've germinated & cultivated two chillies each from each variety & plan to use 7L grow bags and put each set several meters away from other varieties besides using a voile "veil" for the pots once they start to flower to avoid cross pollination. I was wondering about size of containers. I really hope these will be adequate.

  • @TheDuckofDoom.

    Are those liters the true pot volumes or a trade size?
    Here in the USA nursuries and retailers erroneously refer to standard container trade sizes as "gallons" so there is an error of 20% to 30%. (US gallons are about 3.8 liters, so US quarts are just a bit smaller than a liter)
    Example: a number 1 pot is a true 2.6 to 3 quarts [liters] and a #3 is about 2.3-2.5 gallons [9L], but they are commonly refered to as 1 gallon[3.8L] and 3 gallon[11.4L] respectively.

    Ring of fire is a compact plant hence why 10L pot VS ground is not a huge difference. But some chilli varieties in the ground will tower over you and make thousands of pods.

    Obviously the roots decide how big the plant gets, however, I grow waaay bigger plants in a small 3.5l container compared to the one he showed. I only give them some extra tomato nutrients once a week.

    • @ollythomas6702
      @ollythomas6702 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the point he was making is that a 10L container will grow the best possible plants without going overboard (obviously bigger pot, bigger plant, but the returns diminish at some point). I'm sure you do grow bigger plants in a smaller pot. Most UK gardeners fill their pots will a heavy soil only mix. Lots of nutrients but the heavy soil easily compacts with watering and this inhibits root growth. Mix in something like vermiculite or perlite and a bit of peat and you'll have a much nicer texture 'soil' to grow in.

    hmmm i grew a 5 foot pepper plant in a 3.5 liter pot. I've seen video's of 10 foot peppers in 8.5 liter pots (although they were strung up) Getting the right fertiliser/watering reduces the effect of a bigger pot size. And indeed the sort of pepper you are growing matters. A prairy fire is an ornamental pepper and will never grow bigger than 2 foot no matter how big a pot size you use..

    • @ollythomas6702
      @ollythomas6702 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most plants are limited in size due to their container and growing season. Extend either of these and you will get bigger plants. Sure some plants are slower growers, but they can still reach big sizes with the right conditions.

  • @svtcontour

    I've read somewhere that peppers like to be crowded a bit. Not necessarily a small container, but lets say you had a single 20 liter pot, instead of a single plant in the pot, to have two or three (of the same kind). Something about them supporting each other somehow . Doesn't make sense to me but I figured I'd ask.

      i planted habeneros in solo cups in June of last year, and grew them from my bedroom window like a houseplant and it grew a little over 1 and a half feet tall and gave me about a dozen peppers. (had to have small pot size/plant because in this part of Canada we only get 2 months to grow and even then we still get frost and such, so i have to grow these things mainly indoors.). they grew just fine in their little cups all through the Canadian winter. i am about to upgrade them to 2 liter pots to see how they grow with a bit more space.

      ***** Hmm that's pretty cool. I'm in Ontario (Toronto) so I think we've got end of may to probably end of October when the plants can live. I did grow some the past few years but I was using one per 3 to 5 gallon containers but they never got as large as I expected. Say 2 feet tall. I guess its the limitation of the season length. Now I'm thinking of trying maybe 2-3 per container and see if it makes any difference.

    Do I need too much sun all day for my chili peppers? I bought several small full with flowers, now they are few peppers and it's easy to carry to the other side of the home where the sun is also available in the afternoon, then I take them back to the front to get the sun in the morning. So if I upgrade pote size I won't be able to take them to my bedroom in the afternoon to put them by the window if the pots are bigger due to the weight, unless I use table with wheels and put a tall stand by the window to continue receiving the afternoon that last more hours and it's stronger. This is my dilema. They are turning red, it was so hard to wait patiently to see them turning red, I got so excited. Now it's a pity to crop, because there is only 2 or 3 in some pots. and they are beautiful just to look at it as decoration, if I don't crop, what happens, it dries out and disappear?

    I have few chilie pots , but unfortunately it doesn't give any fruits, as soon as it gives flowers, the next day all flower drops, I have no idea why, but if you have , I'll be grateful. thanks in advance

      Possibly the flowers are not being pollinated properly. If the place where you grow the plants doesn't have good air flow or insect visitors, you can pollinate yourself with a paint brush/cotton bud/finger tip. Could also be over watering, overfeeding or temperature fluctuation.

    No its not too late. Chillis are in fact not annuals so if you pot it on now it will just grow bigger.

      All dependent on which type you're growing. Super hots tend to take longer than milder types, but there are also other factors, like light, heat etc.

      +Gizmo b There are blogs about having to bring them in. Depends on where on the planet you live. I'm in Britain, I have 3 plants in 1 big pot and they have been pruned and are in my living room near a radiator to survive the winter. Hope this helps.

    Only August, are you kidding me? My plants are loaded down and waiting to ripen in April. August is my third or fourth harvest. In a small pot by the way.

      LearnHowToGarden How about fertilizing? I have heard that when you fertilize the plants stops producing fruit and concentrates on growing bigger. Is that true?

      +Shahin x Hello, I have read that if you give the plant too much nitrogen, it will tend to grow and not flower/produce fruits. e.g. some fertilizers have more nitrogen that phosphorus and potassium. One website suggests using high-phosphorus blend fertilizers to encourage bloom instead.
      Also, you might want to check up the use of Epson salt for pepper plants(also works for tomato and rose plants). Epson salt, when diluted in the right amount (I think one tablespoon in one gallon) and used as foliage spray for pepper plants, encourages bloom and fruit production with better quality according to some websites. If I';m not mistaken it should be done not more than once every two weeks. You might want to read about that :P
