Mozart - Quintet for Piano and Winds in E flat, K. 452 [complete]

- The Quintet in E flat major for Piano and Winds, K. 452, was completed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart on March 30, 1784 and premiered two days later at the Imperial and Royal National Court Theater in Vienna. Shortly after the premiere, Mozart wrote to his father that "I myself consider it to be the best thing I have written in my life." It is scored for piano, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon. There are three movements:
1. Largo - Allegro moderato
2. Larghetto
3. Allegretto
This structure closely resembles that of a typical sonata. The first movement is a sprightly sonata form Allegro, with themes being passed from instrument to instrument, usually with the piano introducing a theme and accompanying while the oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon play variations on it. The Larghetto movement is typical of the 2nd movement of other Mozart pieces: soft and gentle, yet still engaging. The Allegretto movement is a "sonata-rondo" of the kind Mozart used as the finale of many of the piano concertos he was writing at this period, and contains a written-out cadenza-like section toward the end.
This piece was the inspiration for the Quintet in E flat for Piano and Winds, Op. 16, by Ludwig van Beethoven, who composed this tribute in 1796. Both compositions use the same scoring.

A work of divine beauty by W. A. Mozart
It is always amazing how few viewings these masterpieces receive
Not really It's not 3 minutes long
1:21
10:03 second mvmt, 19:26 third mvmt
I love Mozart he helps me relieve my stress, BEAUTIFUL!!!
1:00 is so beautiful, I absolutely love that part. Mozart was such a genius. :)
I agree, it's one of my favorite parts too. I think it's the descending scales in the winds that fool you into ignoring the ascending scale in the left hand of the piano around 1:00 - basically cognitive dissonance. And the ascending pattern is so hopeful - it seems to come out of nowhere. It's these little details that make me fall in love with Mozart more every time I listen to him!
Arascii You are right, that ascending scale is so beautiful with these chords... he was a true genius. :)
and just after that passage he quotes Beethoven's 7th symphony . . . oh, except Beethoven hadnt written it then lol
newgeorge Ah, I was going to say the same!
in 1784 Mozart in a letter to his father wrote to his father that "I myself consider it to be the best thing I have written in my life."
Never tired to listen again and again Mozart
This is my all-time favourite by Mozart, and well performed throughout and very relaxing and I love this and reminds me when I`m at home reading or go to bed and dream away.
A work of divine beauty in a wonderful interpretation.
pure masterpiece - heavenly

Mozart wrote that this the best work he ever composed!
...in a letter to his father.
That was sublime.
Mozart knew very well the pecyuliarities of the wind indtruments; This allowed him to write among others this very beautiful quintet for four winds and piano.
I have played this piece (clarinet), and it was as much fun to play as to listen to. Late Mozart is wonderful.
The A-natural in Mozart's own day (c. 1785) was set at c. 434hz, quite a bit flatter than today's 'modern' A-440. In this recording, someone has raised the E-flat tonality of K. 452 to the modern E-major which is approaching something very close to Mozart's F-natural--so this recording is 'sharp' on two separate counts. The overall effect and the sublimity of the melodies set at 'original pitch' is therefore diminished in this performance to some degree; -but all this has not diminished Mozart's ineffable cantilena-melodies along with his carefully-balanced and subtle interplay of all the instruments here--it still shines out as a work of consummate compositional mastery, which (along with his own evident high-regard for it, according to the letter to his father Leopold back home in Salzburg) makes it surprising that this particular work has fallen out of favour in the 20th century. We can only hope the 'more enlightened' 21st century can make the necessary emends.
Absolutamente divino !! Mozart fue un genio , que duda cabe . Bravo !! 👏
sorry to be off topic but does anybody know a method to get back into an Instagram account..?
I somehow lost the password. I would love any tricks you can offer me.
@Valentin Yosef instablaster :)
the ending of the second movement from 15:58 is quite modern, the ways in which he delays resolution and wanders into strange harmonies. He also uses twists and turns.
0:54 Sounds like Heaven

well, isn't this the cutest thing! like a chorus of mewing kittens.
Perfect metaphor! One kitten starts a tune, and the others pick it up. :)
Although Mozart said this is the best thing he ever composed, this piece is not heard much nowadays. This is not Mozart's fault.
I think it is because our tastes have changed. We prefer concertos and symphonies to chamber music.
That's funny - I've come to like chamber music more. :)
So do I. But what I stated above is true.
To be honest, the point is that according to me has better chamber works than this one. Did he really think that this work was better than his many string quartets, his piano sonata no. 8, his sonata for two pianos, his violin sonata no. 21, and many other chamber works?
It`s Mr. Brendel with Holliger,Brunner,Thunemann und Baumann.
No, it is a different recording...the piano is too energetic and clear for the Brendel recording imho...
+piusottovoce It is 100% the same recording, simply sped up slightly and raised a semitone
A wonderful recording, musicians whoever they are and the recording audio professionals bravo! If the pitch sounds in E, not Eb (I can't tell by listening), some regions of the world use higher pitch than the usual A=440 Hz thus also hinting who the musians are ... and the early clarinet purists (yours truly) use lower pitch A=432 Hz which Mozart used and heard (baroque instruments even lower A=415). But this recording doesn't sound like early music instruments being played.
very good
amazing!
The second movement sounds a lot like the Mozart K 575 the Prussian Quartet - slow movement. Is Mozart allowed to steal?
Am4d3usM0z4rt This recording was posted too high pitched - it's sounding in E major - not in the original E flat major ! Please post it again in the right key.
Too high pitched - in E (Mi) not the original E flat (Mib)
One can only imagine what his music would have sounded like if he'd been given another 20 years. On the whole , his works were getting more and more substantial in the last 7 or 8 years of his life. If he'd lived longer, the combination of maturity and being influenced by the likes of Beethoven surely would have produced some musical magic
Yes, and add Schubert to the list of the greats who died so young and when reaching incredible new peaks of creativity, as was Beethoven too, even in the midst of having a body that was under extreme decay (lead poisoning along with other factors). Imagine if a quality doctor who could have prevented or healed Ludwig's condition! Had Mozart gone into old age healthy, a raging creative storm like Haydn, music would have been very different, and far better, far faster, influencing others that much more.
Fiesta!
Perfect, thank you....I have ordered the facsimile score and will write one...

Daniel Léo Simpson Thank you so much Daniel !! I have already seen it !!
Maybe the uploader transposed it to E major to avoid copyright issues?
+amse9297 I think someone has manipulated it, Mozart is domain public.
+amse9297 Yeah it's not A440 it's A439 TAKE THAT
Why? They play modern instruments ...,
What copyright issues ? Mozart died in 1791 !
It's not about Mozart, it's related to the recording itself. Someone made the recording, distributes it, and owns the rights to it. So it's irrelevant that the music was written many centuries ago, as long as someone made a recording of it and copyright would still apply.

that's what i felt
A. Brendel made a recording of the work with H. Holliger, H. Baumann, K. Thunemann and E. Brunner in 1987.
This is a different recording though. The piano is much more vibrant, clear and energetic to be that recording. Probably the Jeno Jando recording. Imho actually a better recording that the Brendel/Holliger recording!
10:02 Larghetto
+kwastormayt feels like spring on Mozart Island
Yes, it does! My favorite vacations are to Mozart Island. ;)
what can i say
an excellent example of IT
7:45 - Did Mozart indicate this or the players whims ?
Did you run this through software? It seems to have been transposed up a semitone. Trust me, to someone who plays the bassoon this sounds so, so wrong.
+David Brookes I agree: It´s terrible!°
I agree, it sounds awful
Hello this audio is E major
I see I'm not alone, that noticed, that it's E major. Why it is so?
19:27
What's the portrait early on? Mozart looks CHEEKY!
It is Alfred Brendel, but I'm afraid I don't know which year.
nope....it is the Jeno Jando recording...the piano is much more clear and vibrant than the Brendel recording....

The advertisement prior to the video was for Prilosec...... HOW , google, HOW on earth would eveeryryyytthhinngg that I do on the internet lead you to believe anything BUT the fact that I'm a young female?
Far superior to Beethoven's Opus 16
I disagree.
A copy is never as good as the original.
Janak Varma It's not a copy! Why would you say that? Because it's the same instrumentation and in the same key? Surely not. I'm interested to know your reasoning.
I don't have a formal (or even informal) education in music so I am unable to provide any technical reasons. However, the main reason is this: I am a Mozart Fan(atic)!Cheers.
Janak Varma So you say it's better because you're a Mozart fan? Got it!
18:19 to 18:27 is pure 8 seconds of continuous dissonance.
Give a credit, please!
ich habe eine Perle gefunden
Ich auch :)
18:19 leld
If this is in E flat I call Brad Pitt

E MAJOR ?!?!?!?!?!?!
No
it sounds in E man...
thepianist192
Absolutely it sounds like it's in E major.....
As long as you show the first page of the score, why not show the rest of the sheet music?
Can I guess that either you are not a serious person, or you obey the stupid EU IP rules?
