Rudimental Drummers Pads - feels like a real drum?

- Rudimental Drummers is a 2 person company from The Netherlands. Daan and René set out to make pads that are as close to playing on a real drum as possible. Did they succeed? Check out the video. Of note, there is a known issue with this pad and the Evans hybrid head that comes on it where a portion around the area you are playing the mylar can separate from the kevlar requiring you to ultimately replace the head. RD is working on the matter with D'Addario.

man, such genuine and high quality reviews. glad to see dci vets keeping the art in their lives.
Thanks Ramen!!
A day when a new SnareMan video drops is always a good one
Thanks Nick!
As an ambassador for Rudimental Drummers, I have to say I really appreciate your thorough review of the product AND the company. Rene and Daan have created wonderful products and are very active in promoting the rudimental drumming community all over the world. I feel like your review was spot on and honestly highlighted all the great qualities of these pads along with the things that could be sticking points like the cost and weight (and wait, lol) but also pointed out the justified reasons for these. I personally started with the rope tension pad, but also use the travel pad and the pipe band pad. Thanks again for a great review. I just subscribed, looking forward to more of your content.
Thanks for the kind thoughts. Rene and Daan were great to work with.
Thanks for your kind wordt my friend and for your continuous support. Love working with you. Have a wonderful Christmas.
Such great reviews. So very descriptive!
Thanks John!
his rolls are so smooth holy
Great review, very informative! Thanks!!
Finally, a new pad video
I just found out about these pads. They look really fun to play on and the quality looks amazing. If you make another pad review, I recommend the Carlos Botello marching snare pad by Beetle Percussion! Great video btw, very informative and great commentary.
Thanks. I'll check those out!
Sound quality for days! 🔥
that roll quality DAMN
Thanks for doing these
Thanks for watching! 🙂
I ordered one after watching this video. Thanks
Glad the vid helped!
I've been drumming for 37 years, and am concentrating on the corps style rudimental drumming. My field snares are so loud, and am looking for the best pad for training. Thank you for doing these reviews! BTW, your playing is great!
Thanks and you're welcome! Thanks for watching!
Curious about which pad/brand did you decide on?
Thank you.
Oh yeah!
SnareMan makes great content
I always drop by your channel for drumpads!
I am still looking for the best “one” practice pad for marching. To put more weight to my feedback, I own almost every single pad out there. Just have a strange thing for them. I am not biased and I understand marching guys favour the laminate top pads given they are more articulate. That being said, they sound cheap, loud and harsh to hear to the mass.
Best Overall to the mass (drumset & marching) - Offworld Percussion V3 (no beads or VML)
Best combination if only 2 pads for the mass - Evans Real Feel (Red) / quiet & feels nice
- & Vic Firth Slim Pad / articulate
Both are portable and lays down well on lap.
Marching guys are likely going to choose something with laminate. Again sounds like garbage. You might as well play on your countertop.
- beetle percussion / carlos might be the favourite and is different especially rim shots. Double sided. However, I still feel invader v3 is the all time great. Not the absolute best but its always going to be top 3.
Good to note heavy marching sticks vs traditional drumset size and tip will change sound and feel a bit but that was tsken into consideration.
The rest all sound kinda the same and a ripoff from:
1. Vic Firth/Real Feel
2. Xymox (hate to give these guys credit)
3. Invader V3 w/VML
Pads I own
Roland drumset
Drumeo - multi layered
Real Feel (original & red)
Remo - absolute garbage and loud
Ahead
Beetle - original rubber marching, bus & carlos
Xymox - stay away. If you have an order, just forward your email to cresit card company. They will reverse it for you. Both beads & hybrid
Offworld - V3 (w/ & w/o vml), hybrid, outlander
Vader
Tama
Vic firth - stock and slim (& option of laminate)
Drumslinger
RCP - beads & hybrid
Prologix - green, red, marching
Mad practice pad
Drumco all in one
can you do a video of you showing what’s under the head?
can you please do a review on british drum company's practice pad
You should review the artifact drum pad you I think it would be a great video
Since it’s been a while since this review, which pad do you find yourself playing on as your main squeeze? I did purchase the drumcore RD pad, and I LOVE IT. I haven’t used anything else since I’ve purchased it. When I move from the RD to a real drum. I feel like my hands feel a lot better, and my hands don’t feel stiff.
This is still my main pad. It does have the problem though where the plies on the hybrid head separate. Apparently a known issue to RD but also seems to happen with a Falam head that I tried so unfortunately I will have to keep changing the head with some frequency depending on how much I'm practicing but it is still my go-to pad.
@@SnareMan Hey! Thanks for the response. So my RD pad did the same thing when I got it. Had the evans Hybrid on. The center pulled. I am a Remo guy through and through. So I went ahead and tossed a Black Max on top. It was definitely worth switching over to Remo on there.
@@TheLilmike248 let me know how that head holds up
If you add the cost of the marching snare rim, tensioning rods, machined plywood and head, the overall cost is not out of line. I trust the quality and your vote of confidence. It will be the next pad I add to my collection.
And the part where you don't have to source, design, make and assemble it all on your own
Thanks for understanding the process. That's completely correct. I don't recognise your profile, but if you did purchase, I hope you are pleased with the result. If you will in the future, we are looking forward to help you. Cheers, René
I recommend you to know the MP DRUM PADS BRASIL pads, they are great pads, as good as xymox and with more sound
Looks almost like a Xymox clone. I saw their IG page, but don't see a website
@@SnareMan looks almost like a xymox "clone", but much better. they still don't have a website, get in touch via Instagram, they will answer you there, and pass on all information about the pads. I guarantee you won't regret it. I assure you, I will make an unboxing and rewiew video in a few days

Here you go. It's an amazing little set.
unrelated to the pad… your sound quality is great!
Thanks!!
I have a few questions about the pad in general,
I've been thinking about getting one for a while, I just don't know if I want to fork out $170 for something. Like what's the durability on them and considering it's actual drum hardware, do you have to maintain it?
I also feel like this could be done if you just took off the shell and bottom head / rim of a marching snare, and rested the tensioned head on a piece of wood or something. Do you think that that would give me an accurate representation of how the pad would feel? Or is the playing surface tensioned down as well?
Sorry for the delay in replying... Overall I love the pad, but I have had the issue where the plys on the head separate. Its apparently a known issue. I tried swapping the Evans head for a Falam, but still had the same issue. RD is aware of it, but doesn't have a solution. So you might have to replace the heads depending on how hard and often you play. Other than that the durability of them is great and they are made very well.
There is a piece of foam like material (reminds me of the bottom of a mouse pad) under the head that helps with the rebound so just putting the head across a piece of wood wouldn't simulate it. Tightening down the head does a little, but not too much to make it a tighter playing surface since you are effectively still playing on the head sitting on top of that rubber/foam surface.
Great review, Thanks. I really like the mini "Beatles Drum" you have - where can I get it?
It's this one: amzn.to/41b9jRq
@@SnareMan Thanks!!!
I wish you would have taken the head off to show the internals, especially the actual rim the head sits on. You have done that previously and it really shows construction details.
Sorry about that. I have had to take the head off several times because the plys separate (on both the stock head an the Falam I tried). It's a sort of stippled rubber almost like the grippy rubber on the bottom of some mouse pads. There isn't anything like the edge of a shell that it sits on otherwise. I think it was just a wooden base under the rubber.
I can confirm the pad has a solid base with a rubber on top. Our Marching Pads and Rope Drum Pads have a shell with a padding inside. The build of those pads give an even more realistic feel to the pads, but that makes the pads louder than the Chop Pads, Drum Corps Pads and Pipe Band Pads.
We did have the same kind of base when we first started, but with the hybrid heads on top they sounded like a cannon😂
We do still build them like that at request. Cheers
René
hey, can i get the sheets for the sheets for the excerpt that you played at 5:42? totally fine if not, just if its convenient. thanks!
edit: nevermind! just did my first snare transcription on that lick actually, and its pretty easy!
The piece is still technically under wraps until Bluecoats Alumni corps performs it this summer. But yea, it's not too hard of a part to figure out.
So much 🗣️Play the damn thing already !
There's a bunch of playing. Just like to get the info on the pad to start with. But, noted.

How about that blue coat alumni parade. I live in Massillon Ohio same county as canton Ohio where the blue coats are. Will there be an actual performance for that where I can go watch.
Yup. No parade, but there are a few performances in Canton.
July 2 - 4, Canton, Ohio (exact performances to be determined)
August 8, Akron, Ohio
August 12, DCI World Championship Semifinals Encore, Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis, IN
Been wondering about these types of pads! Heard that drumslinger is about as reliable as xymox.
Yes. I've heard the same thing about Drumslinger. Rudimental Drummers seems like they should be very reliable though based on my interaction with them.
@@SnareMan Looks like a great product! Thanks for the review!
@@TylerDunphy You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Agreed
@@SnareMan they are reliable. I just purchased and they contacted me and asked where I heard of them so I told them I heard of them here
do you think youll review the vic firth slim pad w/ its laminate?
I don't have that in the plans but I'm happy to if they want to send me one
On the playing the pad section did you play a Bluecoats piece from awhile ago
Nope. I played a piece from this year's Bluecoat alumni corps show. 🙂🥁
Could you imagine if offworld made this style pad? Underneath the head is just cork and gum rubber.
Imagine if it was offworld Dark Matter, cork and the the head on top. I would imagine it would be a very realistic feel
Could be. The 2 pads have very different feels though.
Would you review the ahead s hoop pad and compare it to the xymox pad? That’d be a good comparison video
I've tried several times but I can't get them to send me one.
@@SnareMan there’s some on Amazon you can get it. That’s how I got mine. I guess just a buy and review thing and a comparison?
@@gavinnotsmart6473 I've spend a ton of money on pads and have a ton of them. I probably wouldn't spend money on one I don't think I'll ever use just to review it. I'm happy to give the pad some free press if they want to send me one though.
Hi.. does the chop pad have almost the same feel and performance to the corps pad.. you should try their other pads and compare all
No. The chops pad is a lot softer feeling, to help build your chops. I'm not going to spend money to buy all of their pads for a video. They aren't cheap.
@@SnareMan I need you to be completely honest.. what do you hear recommend.. invader v3 hybrid.. rampad or rudimental drummers.. be honest lol
@@lmaolmao784 They are all very different and good for different reasons so its hard to pick one best pad. I think the Rampad has the most rebound, but it bounces around on a flat surface and has a small diameter. Also the rim sits below the playing surface. RD is an amazing pad, but expensive, heavy and I've discovered that you have to replace the heads maybe every few months because the plys separate. It's a known issue. The V3 is a great all around pad. Good feel, prize, size, sound. The RD is what I've been using mostly full time since I got it, but with the above understandings.
have you reviewed the "drumslinger" very similar like the rudimental?
No. I wrote to them about it but couldn't get a reply.
Dude! Where did you get that Neil Peart scale model kit in the background?

quick question, if we were disregarding the price would you recommend this over the offworld? im assuming you would since well yk

Do a drumslinger review next.
I've tried. I wrote to them and couldn't get a response
I’m sure you’ve been asked before, but what sticks do you like to use the most?
No problem. The IP FS-TR's. It's what Bluecoats line has been using and what the alumni corps line used.

Dude has a very staccato style of stick control highly suited for militant style corp snare
It's old school drum corps style
@@SnareMan yes it’s a good way to get tendonitis. Relaxation technique and Moeller strokes promote longevity as a drummer.
@@user-hd9jy7pt7x well that's the way we drummed back in the 80s and 90s. I've tried but it's hard to change the basic style you play with. And I'm not drumming that much these days anyway
@@SnareMansame here, I tried out for corps in mid 90. Definitely still stiff and staccato style like the video, but my drum set teacher promoted relaxation.
@@user-hd9jy7pt7x At least Bluecoats and Star of Indiana that I was in used rebound as opposed to Blue Devils as I understood that work to stifle the rebound. Didn't quite make sense to me but that's what I was told
Can you review a drumslinger drumpad and The Carlos botello drumpad please
I've asked both of them for pads to review but neither has responded
Im still trying to find the pad that doesn’t absorb too much to where I can still get used to making use of rebound, however not too much to where it doesn’t help me develop my muscles and chops, got any suggestions?
Um i would sugest an aquarian super pad its good or real feal but real feel has more bounce. Personly for this aplocation i would use the superpad
Moongel
what sticks are those? are those tom raricks?
Yup.
Any drummer that knows how to cut plywood should be able to make these themselves. I made one in ‘96.
sure, someone 'could' make one, but most people aren't going to put in the effort to do all of this.
Just found this video, if you still have them, would you stick a mesh head on them and let people know.
let people know what
@@SnareMan what they would feel like with a mesh head.
@@Lusidous I can't imagine it would be good. I tried putting a falam bottom on and it was just too thin. It was like playing on wood with some thin padding
Is it possible to change the head on the corps pad?
sure. you can just remove and replace it as you like
@@SnareMan oh that’s good, it’s nice they give you the ability to change the head.
The heads can be replaced by any 14" head. The reason we use the Evans is the exclusivity we have with D Addario. (Andante heads excluded). Our other diameter pads also have real heads that can be changed without any hassle
What stand do you use?
I actually talked about it in one of the takes but apparently didn't make it into the video. I'll find a link for you in a bit and post it

@@SnareMan just one excuse after another. And he was making pads for people that ordered months after me.
@@smdftb8495 Sounds like he's taking lessons from Xymox
Do you think it’s comparable to a ram pad?
It's really a totally different pad. It's a full drum size, the rim actually sticks up over the flat head compared to the domed Rampad, and the feel is very different. On the other hand the RamPad is much more portable, cheaper and has more rebound.
Which one has more rebound? V4 invader or the RD Pad?
Nevermind you answered the question in the video.
@@ACEJONES Yea, they are just different feels.
Can I ask why you don't tape your sticks?
The ones I was using in the video had clear stick tape on them. You can kind of see the chewed up tape a little bit in the video
@@SnareMan honestly, i thought that was residue left from white electrical tape or something
May ask, what is under the head that gives it's feel
The closest I can describe it is that it's kind of like the wavy rubber on the underside of a mouse pad .
@@SnareMan thanks
Expensive pads. What I highly suggest for anyone in a drumline see if your drumline has any old snares and take off the floating head, but keep the head on it. You just made a DIY RD pad but it's more realistic and didn't pay a thing.
You are correct for the part it's easier..... but it's also way louder 😅
But we want to inspire drummers to think about more options to rehearse the best way they can.
Good job 👍🏻
@@RudimentalDrummers oh yeah 100% it’s very loud. Definitely not something you’re gonna be lugging around. But it’s a great more compact option to have a real feel of a head and rim. I’d love to get a pad like yours or a drum slinger one day tho
