I remember one of my jobs had a major Linux dick measuring thing going on, as well as keyboard and ide. It was out of control. Thing is after showing off our hot shot vimrc files and hyper optimized colemak for programmers layout or completely stripped down nosystemd arch os... We had to actually work, like you know, build apps for our clients lol. I remember one guy really got into vim in a big way but he was the least efficient of all of us cause he got into colemak at the same time and couldnt figure out which bindings were where. Or my boss had a customized arch os going that was fine until we were at a client meeting and he had to plug and HDMI cable in to present some code... And after that was sorted, the client asked if he could zoom in lol and the whole thing started over again. Now I just use either Ubuntu or debian depending on the machine, toss on some emacs and vim config files, some bash profile stuff, done. Seriously just KISS.

In my opinion, it's perfectly fine to switch at any time, for any reason. There really are differences between major distros, and you may need to spend some time with one in order to find out if it works for you.

So, here's my journey in a nutshell:
    elementary OS (January 2015)
    Ubuntu (January 2015)
    Manjaro (March 2015)
    OpenSUSE (Sometime soon)
I switched from Elementary to Ubuntu out of preference, then when I felt a bit more advanced and wanted to try something new, I switched to Manjaro, which became my favorite and I used it for a long time, but when my home Manjaro installation got borked and had weird flashing issues on boot and I couldn't do anything with it, not even switch to a TTY, nor could I fix it with chroot, I basically just scrapped the installation and have recently decided to switch to OpenSUSE Tumbleweed because it is still rolling release, but it's not bleeding edge, and it's more stable, and plus I also want to learn RPM and the OpenSUSE way of doing things, as well as use KDE extensively when I have used Xfce for a long time. I want to get out of my comfort zone and have new experiences as well as learn new things.

Its rock solid in my experience.
The only 2 issues i have with it are:1- no support at all for my amd hd8850m (amd's fault, but i think with some jerryrig *buntus can still use it, and only them basically)
2-doesnt have the switchable hybrid laptop graphics support (that goes to manjaro and *buntus basically)

    • @joaquinjuliarena2110

If you're in a position to make a choice, then think about what's most important to you. One thing that I think is really important is the size of the community and how easily you can get support (What do your friends run? What can you find search results most easily for?). So I wouldn't normally pick Ubuntu, but it's hard to beat the number of Ubuntu users out there, so it makes it easy to find answers to common problems.

The way I handle "difficult" choices like these is with a pinch of apathy. Throw out the choices that are obviously wrong, then stop caring and just pick something. This way, you'll probably still make a fine choice, and you won't feel bad about it because you've already decided you don't care -- at least, not that much. Also, in the case of Linux, it just really does not matter, because, whatever your dream setup is, you can get there from pretty much whatever starting point you choose, I think. Honestly I haven't hopped distros that much. I went from Ubuntu to Arch to Kali to Arch (Kali is in there because some stuff isn't built for Arch, so I wanted to go back to Debian, but not Ubuntu. Whatever was broken didn't work there either, so eventually I went back).

@ippos_khloros typically we dont use fork, we say derivative, because it isnt as simple as making a copy of a git repo, because distros aren't a codebase, they're a kernel/package/binary build/distribution system . Most distros are derivatives. Ubuntu itself is a derivative of Debian and its repos are mostly just downstream from Debian. But it also can have signifcant differences in architecture as a project, for example it was using upstart for a while as init which debian never used. Hell, Mint has had its own derivatives.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Arch slamming the door (by abandoning an .img format for the RasPi) on millions of potential new linux users was a very 'bright idea' --some would say an "elitist" approach, but I couldn't possibly say as such. >_<

It's a perfectly acceptable and stable middle-ground. Yes, it has a little bit of a learning curve in comparison to Mint or Ubuntu, but if you get past it, it's worth it. It teaches the user about Linux, it's reliable, it's beautiful to use, it's fast and functional and it won't screw with your computer. It's the workhorse stalwart of the Linux world.

I like Debian because of its cool extras.
There are offline installation DVDs with stuff to install on them. It even offers printable DVD covers.
I have yet to see another distro with that.
And it has a security feed, which is cool beans.
I don't care that much about the "old" repository as it's still better than Ubuntu (that's been very old to my knowledge). And Sid (or however the testing release is called) has a more cutting-edge repo.

On the FSF stuff, I've got a free kernel, free core libs, free package manager, free desktop environment, free browser, free development tools, free office apps, etc. If I have to install a proprietary package for certain things like using my video card or playing Flash games, then while I don't like it, it's a limited and purposeful compromise that still takes place atop a free software core. If and when the free alternatives are able to do the job, I'll switch; the point is to have that option available.

This video is contradictory, first half is don't think use what you've got and change what's not right, yet the second half, it's obvious you have to think which is the best distro for you. Your average user doesn't want to keep changing things and distros all the time, what they want is for it to work with minimal maintenance and not break. Sorry using Linux as your OS, it's all about thinking.

I have never found anything remotely as good as Fedora with as much polish, anywhere. Bleeding edge software that manages to be stable somehow, vanilla un-molested packages (looking at you, Debian), great support, and despite what you may have heard in 1998, Fedora's rpm-based package management is actually stellar nowadays, far better than Debian's stuff.

    - « your distro is not the appearance » One of the most important truths in the Linux world.
    - My take on choosing it is : begin with what someone close to you can help you with if such a person exists. As Luke says, if you're fine, just stick with it. Computers are messy and buggy more often than not, and if it's doing the job fine, think yourself both happy and lucky. Then if the itch of change is coming up because of technical reasons, if you've got the time, do try something else on a separate drive or something. You may indeed find that a series a minor annoyances are tantamount to one big clusterfuck when you find something that really works better for you. For me the choice was very simple : was tired of realizing that a reinstall of ubuntu when changing versions was _for me_ always preferable performance-wise to just upgrading to the next version, so I investigated rolling distros. Arch being the popular thing it is, I installed it. I was proud of both the install and maintenance. Some upgrades can truly be challenging though… The most important thing when you run Arch, I'd say, is to subscribe the update newsletter rss feed thing : it's vital. Then some day I tested Manjaro, and after 3 years on the same Arch, I installed Manjaro because it sounded like I wouldn't need to tinker stuff and learn all the time, and it's been… about three years now. I love the easy maintenance (a yaourt -Syu once in a while and I'm good), the repos with AUR have everything I'll ever need without the need for stuff like PPAs. I haven't been a Linux forum in maybe 10 years, because I don't need to -and would never dare annoy people with stuff that I messed up out of sheer laxness.
To be fair with Manjaro I've come to forget about fixing stuff. I really need to go the wikis once or twice a year for a quick reminder on how to do really simple stuff, because I can just afford not to care here. Now that I've discovered i3wm the system looks perfect, and in the process I've wanted to take a peek at what's going on in the world of distros, and some things are very interesting indeed, but my system is working, and I've got sooooo many other things I want to do. I'd really rather take some time to get into a programming crash course than learn how another init system or package manager works somewhere else.
Lastly, I feel we should be thankful to live in age where many issues of the past are pretty much gone, for me hardware detection whimsicality among distros, and dependency hell. I liked my first openSuse, very first distro, but man when Ubuntu came around I was like now THAT's package managing. I don't think one has to deal with that sort of problem anymore, and that's like health, you don't notice how good it is when everything is running fine.
tl;dr : I agree with Luke Smith (uploader), when your system works, learn to be content because you should. BUT you're totally free to take a peek elsewhere if you have the interest in you to see how things are done on the other side of the fence. Linux is a vast world, and if something bugs you but seemingly noone else in your community, chances are that it's bugged other people more knowledgeable than you who have found solutions to that. Just be mindful you might have to learn anew a whole lot of other things you took for granted if you want to take the leap. But hey, you can never know too much :-)

  • @kebman
    @kebman ปีที่แล้ว

IMHO the main reason to use Arch isn't a two second faster start-up (it'll be more like 15 seconds with custom UEFI, but I digress). IMHO it's _learning_ more about computer systems and about Linux. Arch teaches you that in a very gentle way. That's why I chose it. It's also gives you a feeling of mastery for having made an almost from-the-ground-up custom system. If you don't want to learn about the system or about the inner workings of Linux, because you just want to browse the net or be productive, then choose an easier distro, like Mint or Manjaro.

But then I understood its ridiculous to switch, because any Linux system is capable of doing what other Linux system can do. My final candidate was Arch and its been my home since then. So Window manager, Desktop environment etc components are the variables here that I need to change in order to build up my productivity on Linux. Switching between them fixed my many issues and gain knowledge even.

I think distro-hopping is very advantageous, and I think every new Linux user should spend at least six months distro hopping, trying out a new distro every couple of weeks. Unlike buying jeans, distro hopping is mostly free (the only cost being your time). There is nothing you can break that a clean install won't fix (if you've backed up your data), so spend some time trying out all the popular distros and desktop environments. Eventually, the novelty feeling of distro hopping passes, and so everyone settles down on a preferred combination. But the process itself gives a Linux newbie precious experience and realistic expectations (yes, it's generally true that there is no such thing as the best distro, except , of course), much better than a TH-cam video could.
So I don't see why anyone would advise against distro hopping. The worst thing you can do as a newbie is to install Ubuntu with GNOME and just run with it no matter how unpleasant your experience is. I find that contrary to the Linux spirit. It is perfectly okay to switch to Arch, have a miserable time for a couple of weeks, and switch back to Ubuntu. :D

So, I was wondering (what with all the memes and vidme, minds references) if any of this was meant to be serious, and I realised that it actually is. The video is not joking by the end. And it isn't even changing its mind as if its a post-ironic humour.
I can solve this. The first implicit assumption of the video is if somebody (the linux "undecided people") is a beginner. Immediately, they'd therefore need some fairly modern machine (not some old dual core) so they can choose ubuntu (or kubuntu etc) with it running well. However then the video goes into the realms of people who are not beginners. Well, then they aren't really going to seek advice from the video then are they? I didn't thumbs down the video. I'm just saying.
Then the video suggests people might only want something purely FOSS. By that point (all ubuntu information paranoia aside) they'd know about FOSS and how to find out.
So, lastly the video tends towards the idea of the undecided people having no qualms about FOSS or proprietary (either is cool to them) and those people also seem more knowledgeable considering what is spoken of. It also hints at drivers being an issue. Again, as per the start, computing horsepower is no real barrier. For this there is really a solution that would work. Use BSD (specifically PC-BSD aka TrueOS) which has (compared to many linux distros) good proprietary drivers, and use its linux compatability layer to run linux in a container (so you would not actually see PC-BSD per se at all), and simply, the chosen linux in the container would be "Mate Debian Linux Mint" because it updates automatically to be bleeding edge. You can use the ZFS on the BSD and btrfs in debian mate mint. Even though the PC-BSD containing mate-debian-mint setup is for "advanced users" who are not in the beginner subset of people (ubunut), PC-BSD is really rather easy to get started. You don't need jails and so on unless a power user. Nobody considering gentoo for example would need the video. These people don't care that PC-BSD won't be all FOSS. Also the auto-updating of that particular Mint (debian-mate-mint) means it will always be updated without thinking of it. Then if you hate an update, the snapshot or rollback of zfs (or btrfs) solves that.
Also for propritary wifi drivers, you could try ndiswrapper for wifi if you really needed it.

I use Arch and I don't think I am going to switch anytime soon. The reason I am using Arch is that as a computer scientist I like to know how every component works and interact with each other which is obfuscated in a distro like Ubuntu. Arch throws you in the deep end in that regard. The other advantage is having kernel and package updates as soon as they come out, and it's nice to get ahead of the new changes that will be rolled out to other distros further down the line.
The main reason I try and play with other distros (usually in a VM) is so that I know whats going on in the Linux distro space and also find nice distros to be able to recommend to people who want an out of the box solution right for them.

I started my Linux journey with Redhat 9 back in 2003. I've been around the world distro-wise: opensuse, ubuntu, straight up debian, gentoo, arch, the works. 14 years later, I am back to Redhat (actually CentOS, since that is free) mainly because 1. that is what we use at work, and 2. it is a major distribution that is heavily supported (as far as software packages go).
There are a lot of people who use Linux for a lot of different things. If you are new to Linux, as the video says Ubuntu is probably the best choice. Anything Debian- or Redhat-based is going to do well because those are the most widely used and you can get the most packages for those systems.
As far as desktop environments go, we are all SOL since GTK3 is now supposedly the standard. There is no good desktop environment anymore.

On a personal level, distro hopping can be fun. On a feature need level, on a server level, where you need very specific things to be operational, then you need stability and that ONE app that does whatever you need it to do, for others. So in the one hand you can enjoy distro hopping. I do. On the other, you have business needs that means you have to be damn sure that your system is rock solid. You don't need that on a personal level. On a personal level, all you need are either a great tool, or new experiences. This will decide if you need to distro hop. If you distro hop out of insecurity, then sure, stop it. Varg commands you. But if not, then IMHO distro hopping is completely fine. Keep on hopping! :)
