Historically this wasn't too uncommon. Until the steam engine age, there was generally little difference between a trade ship and a small - medium warships. Only the largest warships (ships of the line with 3-4 decks of guns) were structerly different. And, even the most peaceful ocean going warship had some canons, as pirates are significantly less cool in real life or in a galaxy far away.

Yeah, the battleships in Star Wars are, weird when space combat has a WW2 aesthetic. I like to describe them as WW2 battleships, but with only their secondary armament.

Given how unpredictable the countless situations you face in the galaxy can be, it doesn't surprise me that many ships offer huge room for upgrades. Otherwise your ships wouldn't have much appeal to potential buyers. Customization is the theme here. After all, it plays into the realistic "used future" aesthetic of the Star Wars Universe.

This came back to reminds me of the "Space Shimakaze" purposes I had a bit while back. Essentially I would imagine due to its extreme modularity the CR90 can be easily transformed into a fast and manoeuvrable proton torpedo launcher. Given the size of the cargo bay and those two massive turbolasers, one could even fit firepower equivalent to a Y-wing squadron in there. And in practice, This heavy torpedo armed Corvette can either have a squadron of X-wings distract the Tie-fighters while accurately jumps right on top of a Victory and such and just cause excessive damage to the ship, then quickly jumps into hyperspace, or to pretend to be a civilian ship until it got up close. This tactic I think will work well with the alliance's hit and run tactic, and even in fleet battles, multiple such corvettes accompanied by escort could deal serious damage to any capital ship.

    • @DIEGhostfish

There were special-purpose ships that could do this. Dornean Gunship and DP20 had so much turbolasers and torpedo launchers for the ships of their size that they could reliably cripple larger capital ships with only a couple of strafing runs, just like ww2-era destroyers would have done.

The party I used to run SW d20/Saga edition for had a Wayfarer medium transport. It was basically a CEC space Semi trailer. They were working for the Legends New Republic shortly before the Vong War. They eventually convinced CEC to modify the design, basically stacking 2 drive sections together, welding them onto the front of a cargo pod, and putting a hardpoint for detachable pods on either side, they called it the Sojourner.
The party [if anyone is interested] was:
-Wiley T. Ewok: the group's pilot, he was an escaped test subject from Warlord Zsinj's labs [the one that made Piggy and Gara Petothels co-pilot]
-Dac Mason: Corellian Jensaarai on a mission to investigate the post-Empire galaxy
-Arctan Voss: Iktochi Tech [the "designer" of the Sojourner refit]

You can carry cargo, passengers and most pirates would think twice about attacking you (note: Why do I not want fighters? Because those require crew, while a single person can operate a CR90 with droids (a few astromechs to do maintenance and a droid-brain to help fly the ship and operate the weapons and some B1s and B2s for defense while the ship is on the ground (wouldn't want it to get stolen like my beloved Ebon Hawke was in KOTOR2!))

CR90 has always been one of my favourites and would be an awesome ship to have as an independent. I think my first choice would be the VCX-100 though, much smaller and easy to manage (and pay) crew, that incredible CEC modularity to make as dangerous as you want and big enough to be comfortable in, my only criticism of the YT-1300 is it is very cosy for more than 2 people the VCX has extra living and cargo space.

  • @Earthstar_Review

CEC is a definite standard of quality for independents in the Star Wars universe. I think, starting off, a trader would aspire to one of their light freighters, with the eventual goal of something like a CR90. However, cost would be a major factor in who can get one. A Corvette is a pretty major investment for a private company. Not only do you need a dedicated crew for the thing, but you need at least enough credits to finance a loan to buy one, plus wages for said crew and maintenance needs as well. It's about the same size as a Falcon DeLacy Anaconda from the game Elite (and its sequels), but with more compact hyperdrive tech. A CR90 fitted for freight could supply a colony in a single trip for months if planned carefully. That's a substantial amount for a tramp freighter.

Not for the mainline navy, but for smaller scale tasks that needed to protect less important worlds and of the sort that might occasionally be drafted into protecting ISD's during local missions. Sort of like other patrol ships like the Tartan-class, Arquitens-class , and Gozanti-class. I would imagine that locally produced ships of all kinds were in use to save lugging replacments and other supplies across the galaxy when a locally designed patroler might be just as sufficient for sub-star destroyer tasks.
