Great video, thanks. My son's 2010 CRV has the infamous oil consumption issue. The oil drop is rapid, like 3/4qt per 500 miles. I'm not seeing any oil in the engine (I cleaned the engine so I could easily spot leaks), no spots in the driveway or anywhere else, and no blue smoke... It has to be burning the oil. I'm a former master mechanic, so I replaced the PCV, tried doing piston soak with Berryman Chemtool, and used BG EPR. No change yet, in fact it almost seems like it's using more oil. Putting in fresh oil this weekend, and use Valvoline restore and protect. This oil is rumored to do a very good job of cleaning up binding oil control rings which these engines are apparently notorious for.
Our granddaughter's CR-V was using 3 quarts of oil between changes. I haven't tried changing the PCV valve but will do so. At her last oil change, which I performed, I exchanged ½ quart of oil with a bottle of the new Synthetic Marvel Mystery Oil and now the oil consumption has been reduced almost in half. I'm not using Castrol but SuperTech 0W-20 instead. It's do for another change this weekend so maybe we'll try the Castrol OW-20. Can't hurt.

If it’s the 3.7 engine most likely it will burn oil regardless bc of the engine flaw. The piston and rings are the problem and replacing those is the only “solution”. It’ll just be better to always carry extra oil in the car to pour in. Also inspect your oil pan for any leaks in case that is the problem too.

True. Good running engines for the most part, but the thinner oils do burn off more easily. Use high-quality oil and change it every three months with a good filter. That kind of sucks, but we gotta baby these engines to keep em going or we can expect major failures and repairs

Sorry your friend died. Luckily I found out when My engine failed due to low oil when I was pulling into my driveway.
So sorry about your friend!!! IMO Honda should have to recall these engines. I have a pilot 300000 + miles. Burns oil like crazy now cats are full of oil. I’ve used cat clean it works for a day or two then right back to engine dying while driving. After reading ur comment I think it’s time to just get another vehicle. Too many miles on it to pay for new cats. Luckily when I’ve lost engine power it’s been while driving on regular streets so far but I do a lot of highway driving and I worry the whole time if I’m going to lose power while at higher speed. Just not worth it anymore.
Can i used castrol edge 5w30 instead ow20

They good I haven’t seen any issues yet as long as u change the fluid on time
I have the same problem with my 2013 Accord.. it's that stupid CVT transmission. I personally do not like this new transmission it doesn't feel like it shifting gears at all and when it does it feels really weird unlike what we are used to standard transmission... But I have taken it to two different Honda dealers and both of them told me the same thing that is normal. It feels cheesy to me.. but whatever.

Try this oil gtx castrol and then keep an eye on it it should make diffrence after few oil changes and replace the pcv valve

@@Jcrobles911 no problem!!
I tried Castrol edge hm 0w20 it was good til 1500 miles then started losing oil
Oh ok it take few oil changes to see diffrence

2010 Honda Accord 2.4 200k and using a lot of oil. can I use 0-20?
U have to use 0- 20 if that’s what it calls for
With that miles and burns a lot maybe use Castrol GTX 5w-20 and maybe some MMO or STP ceramic treatment. Plus change the PCV valve.

2016 crv here, 3.5 quarts down at 50% oil life. This problem just started because when i thought i needed chain tensioner due to bad engine rattling, dealer said i just needed oil. They replaced valve cover gasket and oil change. 50% oil life and my engine was near dry. I already added castrol since then but have not tried pcv valve. I'll update if anything improves.
It’s common problem u should try to fight it make them fix it do the pcv valve as a starter repair simple and easy also switch to gtx castrol and keep an eye on the oil after that maybe it will work out after 2-3 oil changes I Hurd good about gtx castrol oil
How many miles do you have on your ‘16 CRV? At how many miles did this problem start?
Wow, thats a huge amount of oil burning at 50% oil life. Have the same exact car but it burns around 1- 1 and 1/2 quart every 5k miles. I use penzoil but I am planning on switching to castrol as RBTheMechanic had mentioned. I already changed the PCV valve as the OEM one is pretty cheap and easy to change. Did changing the oil to castrol help your oil burning problem? If so, which castrol motor oil did you use the GTX (White/Silver bottle) as mentioned in the video or the Edge (Black Bottle)? Would like to hear your feedback. Thanks.
Valve stem seals might need to be changed.
Ok
Just use the Fel Pro seals. That might not even be your problem. I have had plenty of Honda and Toy small engines that burned some oil. In one case is used the Mobil 1 heavy 15w50 and it still burned oil. I also had a 1988 Corrolla that burn oil like crazy and that engine was still running at 305,000 miles! I also had a Chev S-2 4 cys made in Mexico that blew the engine at 110,000 on Valvoline and i rebuilt it and then it blew the rebuilt engine at exactly 110,000 miles. Its not always the oil however, i trust Mobil 1 better. @@RBTheMechanic
I watch almost all ya videos on these cars and it’s funny my car 2016 sport 9th gen starts doing this on my last 2 oil changes in the 60 thousand range I thought the place was messing with me so I did it my self and changed the pcv Valve same thing but I went back to look at the oil used and it was the one your holding and that oil when used wasn’t much burning goin on with other oil brands issues so I’ma try that oil again and see if it changes I want to bet it does that oil I think is the best for these cars they burn oil regardless but that oil helps
Yeah change the pcv to start and try this oil I’m sure it will help
Castro edge 0w 20 works no burning oil change from Mobile one so Castro is better for a Honda

I’m confused u said ppl use 10w 30 but then u said try 0w 20 . So which one is it and my car is suppose to take 5w-20 so which one should I try. It’s burning oil once my car says 50% oil life it’s 2qt low on oil everytime.

Interesting. I have oil consumption problem on 2009 TL SHAWD so I looked it up thankfully I don’t have VCM
True. Good running engines for the most part, but the thinner oils do burn off more easily. Use high-quality oil and change it every three months with a good filter. That kind of sucks, but we gotta baby these engines to keep em going or we can expect major failures and repairs

My brother just spent $4,300 on getting a new engine for his accord. Yeah, definitely check your oil frequently. Also read about the class action lawsuit filed against Honda in 2012. I've worked with Honda's before and unless you've had Honda's in the past and know their common issues, systems well then I don't recommend buying one. I personally go with Nissan on my JDM shopping. Better engines with more power and no sweat on excessive oil consumption. 👍

I strarted losing oil at 70,000. This caused my timing chain to stretch when I did an oil change. 2.5 quarts low. I have been checking my oil level every week now. I always have the startup rattle, but keeping the oil top off really helps. Honda screwed 1000s on this.

It will be a problem when the catalytic converter fails and won't pass emissions inspections.
It’s a really good idea to use LUCAS fuel treatment with upper cylinder lubricant and injector cleaner. It should be used with every fuel fill up. 20-30 ml per 10 litres of fuel. Use this constantly, every fill up and engine will be extremely clean inside burning chamber.
We will try that so far this been good
I use it at every fill-up in our 2009 RAV4 and we also use ethanol-free fuel.
