Saw it again a few weeks ago, and I had to skip through parts because I was bored. I'm glad someone else found humor in this

Oh heaven have mercy on ALL of us-- the cringe was STRONG with this one and I haven't even seen the darn movie yet! O.O And I don't think I need to now because of this comedic, yet therapeutic review! XD (Oh, and this is CougarHearted from DA, just so ya know-- just go by a different alias here! ;p )

I remember when I stumbled upon this short years ago. I pretty much made a similar face at 9:46 after watching. I think the animation is nice, but I think they could have told a better story and left out characters that really didn't need to be in there like the dog, the chickens, the bunnies, etc. If anything, they were better off being background characters. Anyways, I hope you guys do more reviews!

Ok so an animated short to promote gypsy vanners being artificially birthed by mules only for that horse to be 1/4 donkey
What a mess of a short film
I know, right? On top of that, this film is so much of a mess that it doesn't get across that the mule had no genetic contribution to the Gypsy Vanner foal whatsoever, which seems to be what you and 99% of the audience (including me the first time) understands. And why wouldn't you? The foal even has a mane that looks like it's the color of the mule mom's body! In actuality, the mule (in the cartoon and on the real life ranch that produced this cartoon for some marketing reason) is a surrogate mother only - giving birth to a horse egg that was inseminated by a horse. All they needed the mule for was her fully functioning uterus and motherly instincts.
Nala15 DA-Artist if anything they could of just made it a fantasy film about a Mule who was selected to be a surrogate to birth a gypsy Vanner. But some how the egg failed but the spending survived and she got pregnant with her own egg and thus gave birth to gypsy hybrid.
And at the end of the film they explained that something like that couldn’t happen and then explained why Mules are selected to be surrogates and how the Gypsy vanner breed can live on.
I don’t know something with more thought or effort
I had no idea why that animation was made until now ._. I had no idea it had such a strange origin, though I don't know why I thought it wouldn't. I'm surprised you didn't mention how some of the animations are ripped off from Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron frame for frame (particularly at 14:00)
LOL Strange things often have strange origins, right? ;)
We made the Spirit comparison as a whole (the style is similar, no doubt), and I actually checked the animation to see - and while the frames/animations are NOT directly ripped off, they are indeed referenced heavily in several places. The animation and character design in Mule Mom as a whole is so poor, I didn't think that detail of whether it may or may not have been ripped off was necessary to include in the review itself. I'm glad you bring it up, though. :)

But who was the father?!?!?!? When I watched it as a child I thought the miniature horse was the father but now I think it's the Gypsy king?!?!?
It's the Gypsy King. And tech the mule isn't the bio mom either. She would have had a fertile egg (from a gypsy vanner mare with the Gypsy King stallion as the sperm donor) "implanted" in her uterus to make her become pregnant. Flo is a surrogate mom.

Pretty much, though the animation in this is "pretty" it's... I always wonder who got paid and how much because you'd think someone would have gone WTF at least once.

Welp all I can say is that if I watched the whole thing it would probably be the biggest waste of 15 minutes in my life so far. Your commentary on it for 15 minutes however I'd pay double for. :-)

I wished this film is a little longer because there's two questions that doesn't make sense or explain clearly in "Dream Come True (A Mule Mom's Story)" like:
1. What has happened to Flo's parents, I'm mean did they suddenly disappear half way in the story and never been seen or heard again?
2. Who is the father to Flo's foal like is it really the Gypsy King who suddenly have an interest in Flo after he return?
I know, right?? Those are the biggest questions for sure. #2 especially since, ya know, it's kinda the whole point of the story in many ways.
1. Technically has no answer within the context of the film. We can just assume stuff (hence my jokes about Flo's murderous ways XD)
2. Due to how things work in real life, the father and mother to "Flo's" foal would be two gypsy vanner horses. (An egg from a mare and a sperm from a stallion would be artificially combined and then the resulting embryo would be implanted into the mule mom's uterus. The mule "mom" shares no DNA with the resulting foal and is a surrogate mother only.) Who the biological horse parents are is anybody's guess, but the film implies heavily that the foal's father at least is the Gypsy King stallion.
A more plausible explanation for why Flow was able to have a baby, is she was surgically impregnated with the fertilized egg of a Gypsy Varner; it’s kinda like surrogation and mechanic impregnating combined, but so long as the creature has a healthy pregnancy and offspring, their hormones will respond just the same if she was impregnated by a partner
That's actually exactly what happened. Flo's DNA is not involved in the process. It's a 100% horse foal embryo that's put in her uterus. The film muddles this though by bringing in a brown mane on the foal that can cause some confusion that he's got some Flo in him (which he certainly can't).
@@Nala15-Artist I agree that was strange and according to the film, goes unexplained; I mean it could have been a Gypsy Varner mule, though I’m not entirely sure what such a mule would look like, however if they had given the foal white and brown hair or just white hair, we could’ve assumed the fertilized egg was that of a breeding pair of brown Varners. On another note, I don’t see why Flow’s baby would be the future successor of the Gypsy King; the foal was the adopted offspring of a surrogate mule mother, which has no conformation of sharing the king’s DNA, but is automatically named ‘the young prince’ just because he came from a mule’s uterus? 😑
That’s like if a king adopted some other woman’s baby just because he had a ‘unique’ birthmark, like some ‘Harry Potter’ baby
You dodged mules can reproduce a bit, they have a 40% chance to be fertile, which is higher than some horses and some donkeys in the farming and breeding fields. Given inbreeding woes.

And also say that there have been only 60 (give or take since the '02 article) documented cases around the world of mules giving birth (naturally and without embryo implanting with a horse or donkey foal, etc.) since records started in 1527.

Hmm... Not sure if I'd go quite that far - but the similarities are there. What would seal it though, would be to know if the creators/commissioners of this short think this is actually "good" due to incompetence/excitement or if they just settled for what they got.

I don’t see what is wrong with the movie I think it’s great the characters really they get a good plot a great narrator a beautiful song I mean what is it not to like this movie. I making a movie/animation or whatever is hard I mean like it very hard to do. Sure it has some mistakes sure but it’s a great movie

according to the people at minute earth, her having a baby that looked like this would have made sense IF her mom WAS a gypsy vanner.
The foal in Mule Mom IS a full Gypsy Vanner with a Gypsy Vanner mother and a Gypsy Vanner father. The mule mom (Flo) was only being the surrogate mother - her uterus and baby growing abilities were the only things used to bring the foal into the world. It doesn't share any of Flo's DNA at all. This is the main thing Mule Mom the film fails to show properly. Especially since they decided to give the foal a brown mane/tail color to match Flo a little bit. The bottom line that the film was trying to say is that the Gypsy Vanner farm uses mule uteruses to birth their full-blooded Gypsy Vanner horses - so they can produce more horses per mare/stallion pairing at a time... because a horse's gestation is almost a year for ONE foal.

It's the Gypsy King. Flo was a surrogate mother for the foal and the foal shares none of her DNA (it's not her baby, biologically speaking - she just gave birth to him). So the foal had a random Gypsy Vanner mare mother and the father was the Gypsy King. Flo became pregnant via implantation of a viable embryo into her uterus.

They can't be true BIOLOGICAL moms. But they can be a mom in the sense that they can give birth to (via being surrogate to another equine's viable embryo) and/or raise a "child"/foal. They're purely surrogate mothers in the biological sense, though. This cartoon fails to bring any of this across.
