  • Video featuring Nick Drake's song "Black Eyed Dog", directed by and featuring Heath Ledger.
    Credits:
The song "Black Eyed Dog" is written and performed by Nick Drake, recorded in 1974.
The video was filmed in Australia in 2007 by and starring Heath Ledger, with potential partial editing by him. The footage may have also undergone editing by the original uploader of the 'leaked cut', known as Cluedo1, possibly involving Nine Network. The final edit was done by me, resulting in this version.

This footage was filmed by Heath Ledger in 2007 to create a video for Nick Drake's song "Black Eyed Dog", which he then completed and handed over to Drake's Estate later that year. The original cut has been publicly shown only twice while Ledger was still alive: once during Labor Day weekend in September 2007 at the Bumbershoot festival in Seattle on a small screen, and again on October 5, 2007 at "A Place To Be: A Celebration of Nick Drake", an event honoring the musician as part of The Mods & Rockers Film Festival (Slight Return!) held at Grauman's Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles. It was included in an anthology of short films titled "Their Place: Reflections On Nick Drake".
To this day, the original cut of the video remains unreleased. The Ledger family has stated it will not be released. The copyright is held by Drake's Estate, Bryter Music, which funded the film's production. Screening rights are shared on a 50/50 basis with Ledger’s Estate, and currently, there are no plans to exhibit the film. Bryter Music does not consider it a music video.
On February 27, 2008, just over a month after the actor's tragic death, the Australian TV show 'A Current Affair' on Nine Network aired portions of the video. These segments were roughly edited and omitted the ending, which was deemed 'too graphic for broadcast', depicting Ledger drowning himself in a bathtub. Subsequently, a version of the video leaked online with the Nine Network logo visible during the first half. The second part of the leaked cut omitted the Nine Network logo and mostly comprised clips available in a TH-cam video titled 'Heath Ledger - Rare behind the scenes video' (currently online), with the ending missing.
In April 2017, the documentary "I Am Heath Ledger" came out, featuring some clips from the "Black Eyed Dog" video during the final minutes.
This cut attempts to follow the order in which the footage was presented in the documentary, as well as in both TH-cam videos 'Rare behind the scenes video' and the leaked cut (which I downloaded before it disappeared from the web), as much as possible, and places all bathtub clips available at the end. Utilizing AI technology, the quality has been improved, and the Nine Network logo has been removed where present. High-quality footage from 'I Am Heath Ledger' has been seamlessly integrated into corresponding parts. No footage was left out from all available sources. There's only one very short clip generated with AI (at 3:11), derived from a leaked screenshot of the censored bathtub sequence. This clip has been included for completeness and, in my opinion, placed appropriately.
I'm certain that watching this video can evoke strong emotions, given the song's somber nature and the tragic fate of both artists. However, such emotions are often inherent in art, and we should embrace and experience them as they are. Heath's video was a personal tribute to Nick, reflecting his deep love for his music, which is important to remember.
I hope you can appreciate the result, it's the closest we can get to the original cut. In some ways, omitting the entire bathtub sequence helps avoid superficial speculation about Heath's state of mind during filming, which is inappropriate and misleading. Unfortunately, such speculation arose when the leaked cut came out, and this behavior may have played a role in the original cut not being made public. Instead, this version allows us to focus solely on the footage Heath filmed in the right context, along with the song it was meant for.
I felt compelled to complete and share it because it is incredibly special that an actor of Heath's caliber filmed and starred in a video for a song by Nick Drake. It was simply too important to ignore. To me, this video is a beautiful testament to both artists.
The video is monetized by both estates only. Drake's Estate benefits from the song used, while Ledger's Estate benefits from the "I Am Heath Ledger" clips. Both sources have been recognized by TH-cam.

@@akaNandy yo I tried several times to send it to you, it’s a pic via Pinterest so for some reason it doesn’t let me to, but anyways, I think about it again and I’m pretty sure it was taken during his posing for that famous painting of his, just weeks before his passing(he has that black hair moustache combo and his newest-at that time- tattoos on his shoulders)

@@necropolis6164 I’ve taken a look and I believe I’ve found the picture you’re describing. I can’t be 100% sure since I haven’t seen the original cut, but to me, it looks like a photo from late 2007 or early 2008, when he was filming Parnassus. By that time, he had already given the “Black Eyed Dog” video to the Nick Drake Estate. I can assure you that his hair was blondish and not dyed black when he filmed this video because I had to convert a scene to black and white. Also, all the footage of him was filmed in “selfie” mode, whereas the picture you mentioned is a proper photo taken by somebody else. Hope this helps! P.S. Read the video description for the full story behind this cut.
