    Nick Drake
Nicholas Rodney Drake (19 June 1948 - 25 November 1974) was an English singer-songwriter and musician best known for his acoustic, autumnal songs. His primary instrument was the guitar, though he was also proficient at piano, clarinet, and saxophone. Although he failed to find a wide audience during his lifetime, Drake's work has grown steadily in stature, to the extent that he now ranks among the most influential English singer-songwriters of the last 50 years.
Drake signed to Island Records when he was twenty years old, and released his debut album Five Leaves Left in 1969. By 1972, he had recorded a further two albums, although none sold more than 5,000 copies in their initial releases, while his reluctance to perform live or be interviewed further contributed to his lack of commercial success. Despite this, he was able to gather a loyal group of people who would champion his music. One such person was his manager, Joe Boyd, who had a clause put into his own contract with Island Records that ensured Nick's records would never go out of print. Drake suffered from depression and insomnia throughout his life, and the topics were often reflected in his lyrics. Upon completion of his third album, 1972's Pink Moon, he withdrew from both live performance and recording, retreating to his parents' home in rural Warwickshire. On 25 November 1974, Drake died from an overdose of amitriptyline, a prescribed antidepressant; he was 26 years old.
There was residual interest in Drake's music through the mid-1970s, but it was not until the 1979 release of the retrospective album Fruit Tree that his back catalogue came to be reassessed. By the mid-1980s, Drake was being credited as an influence by such artists as Robert Smith and Peter Buck. In 1985, The Dream Academy reached the UK and US charts with "Life in a Northern Town", a song written for and dedicated to Drake. By the early 1990s, he had come to represent a certain type of 'doomed romantic' musician in the UK music press, and was frequently cited by artists including Kate Bush, Paul Weller, and The Black Crowes. Drake's first biography was written in 1997, and was followed in 1998 by the documentary film A Stranger Among Us. In 2000, Volkswagen featured the title track from Pink Moon in a television advertisement, and within one month Drake had sold more records than he had in the previous thirty year

The images of a young, smiling, beautiful Nick are the ones I try to keep in the forefront of my mind when I think of his art. Nick’s depression should not frame his work so heavily.

Dare I say it, the man was beautiful. Sometimes, when we are around physically beautiful people we assume that they couldn't have troubles. Not really bad troubles, not like the rest of us. Maybe, we even lay more upon their shoulders, just because we assume they must be strong enough to take it, strong enough to endure? Unfortunately, some of the most beautiful among us are also the most vulnerable and need kind words from others to get them through, but we withhold that from them. Maybe, we are even spiteful and critical, because, after all, they are beautiful.

This version is so much better than the studio version, it just sounds so much more raw and intimate. His first two albums were over-produced in my opinion, the record company should have just let Nick Drake do his thing with his guitar and left it at that.
What a talent. I admire and appreciate Nick Drake more and more every time i listen to his music. Imagine what else he could have achieved if he had just stuck around.

That's a clever metaphor to describe the original version of the song and its raw, solid core without all the adornment. But it's a bit too harsh in some ways, too, since the purpose of the instrumental adornments on that album seem to be aimed at two goals--to fill out the mood and sometimes add to the clear jazzy intentions of Nick's songs, which is fine up to a point, and to create a more "commercial" recording in hopes of building an audience, which in this case is mostly a failure musically and in not achieving success for Nick. That is, the orchestral and other enhancements too often cheapen the musical soul of his songs and undercut what makes him so profoundly original.

Do you curse where you come from,
Do you swear in the night
Will it mean much to you
    If I treat you right.
Do you like what you're doing,
Would you do it some more
Or will you stop once and wonder
    What you're doing it for.
    Hey slow Jane, make sense
Slow, slow, Jane, cross the fence.
Do you feel like a remnant
    Of something that's past
Do you find things are moving
    Just a little too fast.
Do you hope to find new ways
    Of quenching your thirst,
Do you hope to find new ways
Of doing better than your worst.
Hey slow Jane, let me prove
Slow, slow Jane, we're on the move.
    Do it for you,
Sure that you would do the same for me one day.
    So try to be true,
Even if it's only in your hazey way.
Can you tell if you're moving
    With no mirror to see,
If you're just riding a new man
    Looks a little like me.
    Is it all so confusing,
    Is it hard to believe
    When the winter is coming
Can you sign up and leave.
Hey slow Jane, live your lie
Slow, slow jane, fly on by.

    • @henkn2
      @henkn2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

He doesn't sing "Hey slow Jane, live your live" at the end, but "Hey slow Jane, clear your eye". I have the Fruit Tree box and the textbook therein contains the same error, strangely enough. For also on the Bryter Layter album he sings "clear your eye" instead of "live your live". Maybe he didn't sing what he had written down?

It was just Joe Boyd's desperation move to make Drake sound more commercially viable, which didn't work on its own terms and kind of wrecked the songs.

Dave Pegg's bass on the original released version is very complimentary and great, so although I love and appreciate just hearing Nick and his guitar, it would be interesting to hear both Nick and Dave Pegg (and maybe Dave Mattacks?) on this beautiful song without Robert Kirby's arrangements. Maybe this whole album without Robert Kirby's arrangements (Sacrilege!)? I say this with Bryter Layter being one of my favorite albums as-is. I first purchased the LP back in 1977 in a Coconut Grove record store based solely on the picture of Nick sitting with his guitar and shoes off and have loved it ever since.

Both albums have been done unofficially at a blog called 'Albums That Should Exist', the guy uses alternate takes of Nick solo from demos or home recordings or the radio session for John Peel, or in some cases manipulated stereo mixes.

Hey, here's an idea - let's put some strings and extra instrumental accompaniment on top of this.

  • @timj9418

I appreciate the production of this song without the orchestral overlay in the original recorded version. Still, I have mixed feelings about the "Bryter Layter" album's production overall. There are times when the layered additions work pretty well, as in "Hazy Jane 1" and the most rock sounding Nick Drake ever was in "Hazy Jane II". Other times, it's just too cheesy or overproduced as if to commercialize Nick Drake and make him more successful. The "Five Leaves Left" album is great with minimal addition of bass and percussion, all recorded live. And "Pink Moon" could only be as powerful as it is, as intimate and emotionally raw as it is, with no other musicians--just Nick Drake singing and playing at the sad, somewhat harrowing last part of his short life.

I wish they'd release Drakes songs without all the other crap like those Bongos, flutes etc in the way of his inimitable playing.

Agree with you! However, Nick was the one that introduced Robert Kirby, his mate in university to help him arrange the string and flute composition. Therefore, it was technically Nick's idea. But I think both versions have their own beauty in them.

Err, how did you come by the isolated mutli-tracks?

    • @truefunksoul8638
      @truefunksoul8638 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Probably just a bit of audio engineering knowhow with filtering the album tracks, not isolated multi-tracks per se. Demo from Hampstead sounds better anyway it can be found on unofficial compilations called 'A Day Gone By' and 'Time Has Told Me' which are both at a blog called The Ultimate Bootleg Experience in lossless.

I already knew Nick was an amazing guitarist, but all the other instruments overpowered his guitar skills in this album. First time I’ve listened to this song and really been impressed by the guitar in it.
At the same time, I’m not one of the people who is annoyed or put off by the extra instruments in this album, I actually appreciate them for how they gave a different vibe as opposed to his otherwise almost completely acoustic discography.

The more I hear these amazing stripped down versions the more I realize that Nick was poorly managed and guided in terms of production and arrangements. He needed a producer that just got out of the way and let his formidable guitar and vocal talent shine. The orchestral counter melodies were unnecessary and kind of out of place. A more simple and organic arrangement (simple percussion, bass, maybe a second guitar here and there for a little color..) would have been much more effective not to mention in-step with the music of the time. The first two albums would have sold better which maybe would’ve helped him avoid spiraling into depression. Imagine being as good as he was, knowing it, but still not being recognized ... I know, the fact he rarely performed live was a factor but I think the ineptitude of those producing and recording the first two records was an equally significant factor
