I installed a factory hitch on my 21 outback. You have to remove the rear bumper tube and replace it with the hitch that is much shorter. The outer sections of the bumper have less inner support and it also opens up the rear of the unibody tube for salt to accumulate in. Went with a aftermarket on my 22 wilderness and will live with the not as clean look.
Just ordered a 2025 outback limited. Got hitch, floor liners including the seat back, splash guards, rear bumper cover, led upgrade, and auto dimming exterior mirrors
I've had the Subaru floor liners on my cars but the Weathertech models are heavier and fit better. They now offer a newer upgraded version. Same with trunk liner that gets discounted when you buy the mats. They also have nice splash guards that are bolt-on with no drilling.
I bought a loaded 2023 Touring XT to pickup this week. I had them add the OEM hitch and starter for $1,000 installed. I was quoted $1,400 from another dealer to do, after the fact. Seeing the trailed hitch was $642 from the factory for a 2024 and $400+ for the remote start, it's actually a good price for them to add it after.
Completely agree with person that recommended door handle cup protector. Don’t have one on my 2015 Outback and that area is pretty scratched up. Afraid that would be very visible on the white finish. My son has a 2022 Crosstrek and he got the door handle cup protectors. I think they look good and will prevent all those scratches
June 2023: I've had my 2024 Outback for a month. We ended up buying a limited XT off the lot. But we were planning to order our car. Trailer package for the '24 from the factory is approximately $750. Uhaul wants over $800, but doesn't have the wiring harness. Dealer installed is over $1100. We added the door hand cup protector. Similar to your logic for adding the tail gate protector, but something that serves it purpose every time we enter the car.

Agreed on getting the hitch right from the start - you won't have to pay labor to have it installed. I also agree on the factory hitch receiver. There are a lot of aftermarket ones, but Subaru's towing capacity and tongue weight (and crash rating) are based on their factory receiver, which bolts directly into the frame rails rather than onto the rear bumper bar. Aftermarket floor mats and suchlike are fine, but with safety items I prefer to stick to factory parts.
Nicer to get the factory hitch, but you can get an aftermarket for much cheaper. I got mine installed for about $600cad parts and labour. Does not sit low on the vehicle and looks clean.

I agree with the hitch. I just got mine installed in March, by a Subaru dealership. I don’t know why I waited so long! Loading bikes on one that attaches to rear door was a real pain. I don’t mind that it’s 1 1/4 inch as opposed to 2 inches. Weather tech is what I also got and they’ve worked out nicely. Trying to keep the 16 forester updated a bit lol. I like that the sides are higher providing more protection. Very nice outback, you got some great additions. That pearl white is really nice. 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
Late to the party and it was probably just changed by Subaru, but the Wilderness trim (at least for '24) does come with the all-weather floor mats by default. The carpeted mats are a listed option on the Subaru build and price tool. My dealer's sales agent tried to tell me otherwise and I had to pull up the same build and price site to show him.
I ordered outback xt here in straya several weeks ago and i add a headlight protector cover. I think on mine, the bumper protector is standard. What I forgot to ask is the protector for the backrest. Thanks for the info. Your video is really helpful. Keep it up and stay safe Greetings for Straya(australia)
I love my new 2023 Outback Onyx. My only complaint is with the wireless charging. My iPhone 11 gets really hot after about an hour in the charger port. Around town, it is ok to use for short trips, but on long trips, where I am using my Apple Car Play for Waze and Podcasts, I have to connect my phone to the wired connection resting it in the cup holder or the phone will overheat. Otherwise, I absolutely love the Onyx edition.
So you are turning your Onyx version into a Wilderness one? The all-weather rubber floor lining, mirror approach lights, etc., are all standard on the OBW. For the rear net, get the one that also covers the floor so you can tie down things so thay dont move. As for the mud flaps you installed, besides the look, they won't do much for protection. Either you install the long rally style ones, or none at all - and if you have intense winter where you live, the rigid mudflap tend to accumula more snow-slush and packed it faster than without. And if you try to remove solid-ice hard snow jammed there, you will probably tear down the mudflap with it.
Thanks for the info. I just ordered outback onx xt. Wondered why so many outbacks that were sold were still on the lot. Really enjoy your videos our last Subaru was in the 80’s.
I traded my Qi wireless charger for the stock cubby parts plus cash. It got my phone super hot and most times with larger phone, the Qi doesn't line up. Bad design by Subaru. Also sold my stock all weather mats cause they didn't cover anything. Got Husky Weatherbeaters and they are way better coverage.
I agree. We ordered from WeatherTech instead from Subaru and saved money. We also ordered mud flaps and paid $114 instead of Subaru’s overpriced plastic. Also our vent shades for our windows are aftermarket.
Saw on the subaru website that they now have rubber protectors for the wheel well humps that increases the protection with the all weather mat in the back. Would love to see them here! Especially if they fit 2020 outbacks too. 😀
Hey Alex, doesn't the cargo net have a 2nd net that stretches out to lock down items in the back to stop them moving around? I had one shipped from a dealer in the US to Australia as they weren't an option here at the time and it has 2 nets. 1 vertical and 1 horizontal. Great informative videos by the way. Its a shame we don''t get as many model variants and options here in Australia.
Anyway you can please link for the cargo net? I’ve noticed there are a few different ones, but I dig the one you have here that allows for things to go in-between. Thanks!
I own the same car as you, except it has the turbo engine. My steering wheel has "locked" several times. I have no idea why this has occurred. My Subaru dealer did not offer an explanation. I appreciate your help.
Couple of questions. Your rear seat protector did you get that through Subaru? Also do you any recommendations on storage options for the front like a place for change or dollar bills? I’ve always found places for that in other vehicles I now have a 24 outback wilderness. Thank you Alex
I need cooling seat center console and glove box Home outlet All lights led Fire extinguisher under drive seat Delay the ac start until the engine settles like Mercedes Using light turns while using hazard lights like Mercedes Mirror tilt with reverse Key fob window rolling up and down All window all auto (all up and down ) like OUTBACK sports in Germany
Why would I pay $300 for the hitch to be installed because Subaru didn't have the part? And you said that so nonchalantly, kind of just glossed over it, like all I have to do is reach into my shorts a magically pull out $300. Basically, the dealer is penalizing me because Subaru failed to keep their inventory up. My order sheet states a specific price. If the dealership wants to recoup their money perhaps they should subrogate it from Subaru. And if it's that big of a problem perhaps the dealership should have better communications with Subaru on ordered vehicles so the buyer can be informed of the part shortage before agrees to an out the door price. I ordered a hitch for my Outback Wilderness due to arrive in six days. I sincerely hope I'm not confronted with this nonsense when my car arrives.
In PA if you rack blocks your plate they pull you over. Ordered my 2021 with the hitch... Dealer had to install it. I did not play any more then the factory price. Found after maket floor liners were better same with mud flaps. I had issues with the oem ones holding slush and forming blocks of ice. I picked up a rear seat cover for the dog. I also changed all the inconsistent lights to led. Especially the back up lights. The oem bulbs are horid for backing up in the woods.
I order a hitch on my 22 Onyx XT. It arrived back in May 22 at my dealer without the hitch. The sticker MSRP was minus the hitch. The dealer stated they would install it for the same cost as the factory order. I agreed and it was added to the MSRP on my purchase agreement. What I didn't know was come October 22, I would still be waiting for it due to a national backorder/supply issue. I bike a lot and have a sweet Kuat bike rack I haven't been able to use and has limited my rides this year. Frustrated to say the least!
Sorry, question for you. The USB port in the front. In my 2014 RAM 1500, I can put a stubby USB Drive in loaded with MP3s for the truck to play. Is it possible on the Outback?
all weather mats are a must, but oddly my Gen 5 ones, had locking pins on passenger side, but recently got my Gen 6, and passenger mat has no pins to secure. also got the front/rear mud guards fitted, plus steel cargo step plate (had plastic resin one on Gen 5) -- metal one looks good with the Magnetite Grey. Hope you get your new OB soon Alex.
Interestingly, I sold my Mk4 GTI for a used 2012 OB (which I sold two weeks ago). I sold my 2017 GTI in September...currently renting a car because my 2023 OB XL didnt arrive on time, and sold both my cars!
As someone with the Outback Wilderness- do not get the wireless charger, its awful. Do not get Subaru's mats, order TuxMats they're the best in the market. Do not get splash guards, get proper mud flaps.
no! I had a local place install.a hitch for about 300 bucks - my Subaru salesman even gave me the name for the hitch company :) Agree with floor mat choice. backseat protector also a great add. never considered splash guards . As a senior and retired person not driving much at night so mirror dimmers less of a necessity..
The all weather Subaru floor mats are junk. They came standard on my Wilderness and I immediately replaced them. The Subaru ones barely cover any rug under the drivers pedals (you can see this in Alex's video). Spend a bit extra and go with the Weathertech HP mats instead. These are much nicer than the standard Weathertech mats because they are a bit more pliable and don't have that gaudy Weathertech logo. They fit like a glove, they don't slide around, the cover way more under the drivers pedals and cover the drivers left foot rest as well. The sides go up higher to trap more mud, sand or snow. The back floor mats are actually 1 mat which covers the transmission hump in the centre - a must if you have kids. This is one of the best investments you can make on the inside of your car. So, save your money and forget Subaru all weather mats.
Sidewall protectors for the trunk are a nice option also. What happened to Rockford Fosgate upgrade? If they got rid of that, would want an option for the HK system.
Alex I ordered my 2023 Forester Touring yesterday and you sir have helped me a long so so much! I think you have the best subaru videos on youtube! I was torn between the mud flaps and the splash guards. It seems the mud flaps will offer more protection which was my concern so went with those. I do have a question for you though. The Forester Touring has chrome accents around the car and I am wondering if those are secretly under guards in disguise. When looking at the forester accessories brochure from the subaru website (specifically the dowloadable pdf brochure), the "Front bumper under guard" looks just like the chrome accents on the touring. But in the fine print the front bumper guard says "standard on touring," which makes me think those chrome accents are really the underguards that subaru used to offer on their accessories but now seem to only off the front bumper under guard Also an idea for future videos.... the different warranties you can get from subaru. Cheers mate great video and congratz again on your outback. Thank you for showing to us and showing the invoice. The more transparency between the consumer and the dealer, the better
Thanks Charles! Happy to help! That's correct. The Forester Touring comes standard with the front bumper under guard (which is also satin chrome) Thanks for the video suggestion!
@@alexpmo thanks so much for the reply Alex! I feel that every single forester touring review I've seen has almost undersold the chrome accents. 99% of ppl think they're just chrome accents but I assure you, no one realizes its bumper under guards which do serve the function of additional protection. How much protection it provides is debatable, but no doubt the chrome accents are more than just cosmetics
Great video. You also helped me understand the usefulness of the cargo net with your example. I have a question about the approach lights. Does the lights turn on when anyone walks by? Or just when you have the key in your pocket? Thank you.
I think the Wilderness trim comes with the all weather floor liners. I just got my Forester Wilderness two weeks ago. Loving it! Did you get the windshield protection package? I got that for mine. I'm guessing there is a reason that there is an open lawsuit about the windshields on certain models/years. Figured I'd get the protection just in case. It must be absolute torture to look at your brand new car every day and not be able to take it home. I feel for you, bro.
Why is it that I don't see the popular package, when I go to the Subaru site to build out a vehicle. Is that there for the convenience of a dealer to order? I don't think I priced out an onyx, I would priced out the touring XT which maybe why.
Sent that last reply before I finished. My question is since I like the features available on the limited and touring version but also like the black wheels on the onyx. Will Subaru swap out the standard wheels on the limited for a set of the black ones on the Onyx. I think the answer is no as I tried swapping the wheels when I bought my 2015 but only way was to buy an additional set of wheels. Just wondering if that is possible
Great videos as always. Just curious why you didn't elect for the body side molding? One of your videos showed one with and one without. Aside from protection, agreed looks better with the moldings.
I have a 2015 Subaru outback four cylinder engine w/o eyesight feature. What currently upsets me so far is the drivers seat material is breaking and falling apart. Defect material! It started about 5 months ago. I had three previous Subarus non had this problem. I have various kinds of cars since 1960. This is the first car that a seat has fallen apart do to being defective material. Needless to say it is out of warranty. Expensive to correct.
4:03 iPhone 8 and newer have wireless charging, just make sure you don’t have anything on the back of the phone or else wireless charging may not work!
Don’t get the Subaru genuine trailer tow bar. It looks silly & wont carry a bike rack. I got a Hayman Reece unit with greater load capacity. Boot (Trunk) liner is great.
Leather vs startex seats: Please comment on comfort both in warm and cold weather and for long trips. I have a 2014 legacy limited with black leather seats. They are very comfortable for long trips. However they get very hot when parked in the sun. Also the small perforations in the seats are hard to keep clean. I sometimes need the end of a paper clip to loosen a clogged seat perforation. For some of the above reasons, I’m leaning towards outback onyx with the 2.5. Comments? Are the touring seats worth the extra cost?
Hi there, I watch your videos a lot and am looking at getting the 2023 Outback in sports trim early next year. My question is, my wife has a 2022 xv(crosstrek) and when I get my Outback. Can we get the key fob to be able to open either car? This would save having several different set of keys each.
Ok So if I want a trailer hitch, I should tell them that if the factory doesn't put it on the sale is canceled. No, they don't get to surprise me with some labor charge. It is not a thing! On my 2001 Subaru, I took the cargo cover out. It rattled an real served little purpose. Clearly, you can't work the heated seats controls while driving. That is too far off the line of sight to the road to be safe and since it isn't a real knob, you do have to look to find it. I am in the market for a new car. On it I want: 1) It to be electric or plugin hybrid 2) A real spare tire 3) A place I can lock down my cell phone for charging so it stays there when I hit a bump 4) 5'9" of space in the back for me to sleep if I take off late Friday for early Saturday fishing, hiking or etc.
Sucks you cant use the wireless charger while using the car play. Car play must be disabled or your phone overheats and doesnt charge. I have a 23 onyx xt and I thought it was a wonderful upgrade from my 22 onyx and I was realy dissapointed when I went on a 5 hour road trip and couldnt use navigation through car play if I was charging the phone. I cant even use pandora either. Brand new iphone 14 pro as well
I heard you referring to a “fix” for the 2023 Outback at the beginning of the video. What is this fix you’re referring to? I just purchased a new 23 Outback, and I wasn’t informed of any parts recall or anything going on with it. Can you shed some light please sir?
This was last fall when they were first released. It involves the DCM that connects to the satellites for your Subaru roadside assistance and sos system. Some of the early 2023 Outback’s were sent to us before the issue was identified. However, all 2023s now have the fix already completed so yours is good to go!
Going to order my 2023 Outback tomorrow. I’m so torn between the Premium and the Onyx Edition still. The premium offers great bang for your buck, but the Onyx isn’t much more and you get the dual function X-Mode. 😅
Agreed! The black accents are really sharp. And when I say the price isn’t much more I’d be adding package 13 to the premium for $1400 and the onyx comes standard with everything in that package
@@SavvyTruth im not too familiar with outbacks as im more of a forester impreza fanboy, but if the onyx is turbo, then for the love of god go with that. Insane to spend $279 for charging pad when you can buy one on Amazon that fits for $25-50!
Love the white
I like the charging pad and approach lights. Great accessories.
On my 2011 Outback the bumper guard, came on all weather, premium level. The same with the rubber floor mats.
The extra accessories you got. I will get the same. 👍
Thanks for the info. I just ordered outback onx xt. Wondered why so many outbacks that were sold were still on the lot. Really enjoy your videos our last Subaru was in the 80’s.
Thanks for your information as always.
iPhone 8 and up supports wireless charging
iPhone SE gen2 and up too
Cool assessories!
The ALL WEATHER floor mats are standard on the Wilderness Trim Level.
Thank you for the great videos
Is there a setting on the Outbacks with power folding mirrors to have them automatically fold in when you lock the doors?
Your videos are so good. Congrats on your new Subie. It looks Awesome.
Super helpful! I just ordered a wilderness to replace my gti. Will add all these accessories as well! Thanks
Your videos have been really helpful throughout my decision making process. Thanks again
You’re welcome! Man, I miss my GTI. Fun cars but I’m also excited to have my Subaru
Great video
Couple of questions. Your rear seat protector did you get that through Subaru? Also do you any recommendations on storage options for the front like a place for change or dollar bills? I’ve always found places for that in other vehicles I now have a 24 outback wilderness. Thank you Alex
I need cooling seat center console and glove box
Home outlet
All lights led
Fire extinguisher under drive seat
Delay the ac start until the engine settles like Mercedes
Using light turns while using hazard lights like Mercedes
Mirror tilt with reverse
Key fob window rolling up and down
All window all auto (all up and down ) like OUTBACK sports in Germany
You are absolutely the best teacher. Could you please explain Android auto? Thank you sir
Get an after market Curt hitch instead of the OEM cheaper and seams stronger than OEM. Under $600 installed by my dealer
Has been waiting for my 2023 Legacy premium! The port date has been changed multiple times, from Sept 15th to Oct 15th. Hope I can get it next week.
Thank you 👍 for watching and leaving a comment,

If I ordered an OEM tow hitch with my vehicle, I’d be stuffed if I would then pay extra to fit it just because they sent the vehicle without it.
all weather mats are a must, but oddly my Gen 5 ones, had locking pins on passenger side, but recently got my Gen 6, and passenger mat has no pins to secure. also got the front/rear mud guards fitted, plus steel cargo step plate (had plastic resin one on Gen 5) -- metal one looks good with the Magnetite Grey.
Alex, why did you choose white?
Look into a kuat bike rack. I love mine!
As someone with the Outback Wilderness- do not get the wireless charger, its awful. Do not get Subaru's mats, order TuxMats they're the best in the market. Do not get splash guards, get proper mud flaps.
any flagship devices will work in the wireless charger even the fold 4 with out a case would fit its a little tight
Can you do a quick comparison of the new colors out in the sun and right before dawn?
There were no installation charges for the trailer hitch on my Outback 2020!
But in the fine print the front bumper guard says "standard on touring," which makes me think those chrome accents are really the underguards that subaru used to offer on their accessories but now seem to only off the front bumper under guard
Also an idea for future videos.... the different warranties you can get from subaru. Cheers mate great video and congratz again on your outback. Thank you for showing to us and showing the invoice. The more transparency between the consumer and the dealer, the better
Thanks Charles! Happy to help!
That's correct. The Forester Touring comes standard with the front bumper under guard (which is also satin chrome)
Thanks for the video suggestion!
Thank you.
Just when someone with the fob approaches
When you get a rack you should get a OneUp
I think the Wilderness trim comes with the all weather floor liners. I just got my Forester Wilderness two weeks ago. Loving it! Did you get the windshield protection package? I got that for mine. I'm guessing there is a reason that there is an open lawsuit about the windshields on certain models/years. Figured I'd get the protection just in case. It must be absolute torture to look at your brand new car every day and not be able to take it home. I feel for you, bro.
My dealer told me they no longer offer the windshield protection option....which sucks as that is my Main complaint about Subaru
@Adam F we bought our Forester Wilderness middle of last month and were sold the windshield protection package.
Samsung S9 was the first to have Qi charging. Reminder, that your phone case also has to be compatible.
Why is it that I don't see the popular package, when I go to the Subaru site to build out a vehicle. Is that there for the convenience of a dealer to order? I don't think I priced out an onyx, I would priced out the touring XT which maybe why.
What do you think about the body side molding and the door edge guards?
Alex, I will likely order an Outback sometime next year. I really like the feature
@@michaelmayerchak7687 it’s the same for the 2023. You’ll have to buy the black wheels separately
Figured that would be the case. Thanks so much for the info
just grabbed a 23 touring xt i hope it treats me right
Great videos as always.
Boot (Trunk) liner is great.
bushman's choice. remember paul hogan promoting it?
Leather vs startex seats: Please comment on comfort both in warm and cold weather and for long trips. I have a 2014 legacy limited with black leather seats. They are very comfortable for long trips. However they get very hot when parked in the sun. Also the small perforations in the seats are hard to keep clean. I sometimes need the end of a paper clip to loosen a clogged seat perforation.
For some of the above reasons, I’m leaning towards outback onyx with the 2.5. Comments? Are the touring seats worth the extra cost?
How many clicks does it take to turn the screen OFF at night?
What about the stut cross bar?
Hi there, I watch your videos a lot and am looking at getting the 2023 Outback in sports trim early next year. My question is, my wife has a 2022 xv(crosstrek) and when I get my Outback. Can we get the key fob to be able to open either car? This would save having several different set of keys each.
Alex just curious what jacket your wearing in you top 5 accessory video for 2022 outback’s were you go your jacket?
Ok So if I want a trailer hitch, I should tell them that if the factory doesn't put it on the sale is canceled. No, they don't get to surprise me with some labor charge. It is not a thing!
On my 2001 Subaru, I took the cargo cover out. It rattled an real served little purpose.
Clearly, you can't work the heated seats controls while driving. That is too far off the line of sight to the road to be safe and since it isn't a real knob, you do have to look to find it.
I am in the market for a new car. On it I want:
1) It to be electric or plugin hybrid
2) A real spare tire
3) A place I can lock down my cell phone for charging so it stays there when I hit a bump
4) 5'9" of space in the back for me to sleep if I take off late Friday for early Saturday fishing, hiking or etc.
And it looks soooo much cooler! Both great cars but I'm a fan of the Onyx obviously 😁
I had the pleasure of testing an outback with a turbo 2 days ago. I was floored. So jealous the forester does not have a turbo, but I have this really funny feeling there will be a forester hybrid and turbo in 2024. You heard it here 1st folks!
is the wireless charging pad even worth it? like does it work all the time?
Alex, make sure you get the door handle guards that stick behind the door handles. You will thank me later.
And the door edge guards
You said none of the Outback models came with the all weather mats standard. I thought the wilderness had standard all weather mats, they are just a special version compared to the standard all weather mat.
Good catch! I forgot that was standard on the Wilderness
@@alexpmo Can you tell I have been looking at trims specs like a mad man!?😆
@@ajv0987 lol it’s good that you’re remembering the details. There are so many it’s hard to keep track of
Insane to spend $279 for charging pad when you can buy one on Amazon that fits for $25-50!
Talk about the fact that Subaru should give full size tire on all outback’s not just on onyx edition, also that small tire on my XT car should be rotated to front in order to drive.
If this is true I would not have bought an outback? Can’t cary two jacks Alex.
Please advise.
Y car is 2020 XT turbo in brown.
Phones with wireless charging:
All Iphones from Iphone 8 and newer
All S and fold series Samsungs from Galaxy S6 and newer
All high Motorolas from Droid MAXX 2013 version and newer
All Google pixels Gen 2 and newer
Not gonna bothering with LG (they stopped making phones a bit over a year ago) or any other manufactures.
Hopefully this help. :)
Alex, I ordered my trailer hitch from the factory and the dealer had to put it on and they only charged me $650.00 I got that on 2022 Subaru forester sport
Sounds like they may have covered a portion of the cost. Parts and labor are more than the $650 at a retailer so that’s a good deal!
Alex, why did you choose Onyx edition?
I like the black appearance package that comes on the onyx and it has the startex water repellent interior. It also comes standard with the 18” alloy wheels and keyless entry with push button start so it has all of the features I like.
Have they released the head unit software update to fix the seat heaters on last year’s models?
