I played all three mainline Prime games and Hunters before I was able to find any of the older games. I found copies of Zero Mission and Fusion a few months before the 3ds came out. This series is freaking great. They're decently difficult, and the exploration is varied enough to keep each game feeling fresh. My brain is a little smooth, and I do tend to get lost sometimes, but that doesn't stop me from loving these. I can't wait for Prime 4.
Dude, I randomly came across your first video in this series, and as a long time Metroid fan, these have been great. Def earned a sub from me. Would love to see a video about AM2R and a deep dive on my favorite game in the series, Fusion.
Oh hey, this is perfect timing since I've been working on a rewrite of Other M's story that removes a lot of the awkward bits and fixes the lore and character writing! I'll be happy to post a link to it once I've uploaded the first chapter if you'd like.
Metroid is my favorite game franchise from Nintendo, thank you for covering these especially in October! Would love to see more content about my girl Samus
Honestly, I like to separate Other M Adam to AI Adam. AI Adam ironically acts more human and has way more consideration and care for Samus than Other M Adam did. After AI Adam wakes up from the realization of who he used to be and what he is now he states that Samus's sacrificial plan was a bad idea because it would involve her death. Meanwhile Other M Adam shoots Samus on her back and exposes her to a Metroid attack (he said it himself, that he wasn't sure if Metroid larvae already were immune to low temperatures so he gambled with Samus's back in this scene). If they wanted to make Other M Adam a good guy they did a TERRIBLE job. If he was a good person he would've let Samus kill the Metroid or he would've shot the Metroid before her, then try and convince Samus of doing his plan. Obviously Samus would've disagreed, but Adam would've plan ahead and o something to immobilize Samus. This would've made more sense for someone who has a good moral compass and doesn't want to put Samus at risk. Literally backstabbing is villain behavior. In the game we got Adam looks more like someone who wants to take the glory of sacrifice rather than doing something that must be done while keeping someone he loves away from this danger.
Big Metroid fan, great lore, BTS, gameplay and game summary/review for an epic series that managed to not drag on. My first time coming across your channel. Good stuff!
Among Other M's many sins is that it just straight up stole half of Fusion's plot, did it worse and then had the audacity to take place before Fusion in the timeline. Retroactively making Samus seem dumber for not recognizing the exact same pattern repeating in Fusion. Personally Other M is simply not canon to me. Nothing is lost by skipping it.

(Was for me the most difficult boss at the time ... i felt SOOO WEAK against it! It did SOO MUCH DAMAGE!)
I consumed al the 3 videos in a freaking row!, and i have to say that i am up to date thanks to you, what a great way to cover this legendary franchise!
About the overall story if Other M, theres a fantastic video called "The Other M that never was" by the channel Lexicon Lookout. He talks about the overall translation and localization of Other M and a bit about Fusion as well and just how botched the story was. I dont think the original Japanese version is a masterpiece that fixes everything, but it definitely got the short end if the stick. Worth watching if it interests you
The biggest problem with Other M’s story is that it ruins Fusion’s. It makes Adam so unlikable that it’s hard to like his computer version too and makes Samus’ attachment to him awkward. Also in Fusion it was a shocking revelation that the Galactic Federation were breeding Metroids, which was why you were sent there to stop the X and the GF not blowing up the ship and planet immediately. In Other M they were breeding Metroids before that, so it ruins the shock value. (And yes the mistranslations that it was just a faction and not the entire GF do not help either and makes things confusing in Dread where Samus is still on good terms with the GF.)
I think MercurySteam could pull off a cinematic 3rd person Metroid game if they wanted to. If the next mainline Metroid game is released in 2025 assuming they want a 1 year gap between Prime 4 and Metroid 6, that's 5 years since Dread was released.
I hate it when people talk about making a character more human/relatable because it always seems to translate into giving/forcing flaws/weakness (on)to said character. Yes, human beings have flaws and weaknesses, but that’s not all that makes us human and I’d argue it’s the least important thing about us. I think Other M would have been better received if they had focused more on her relationship with the platoon. Have them banter and tease her as if she never left. Instead of Adam being cold to her, show him more as a father figure to his squad. For why she can’t use her full arsenal, have some outsider (ether someone above Adam or someone they need to work with) throw a big stink about it forcing Samus and Adam to restrict her ability until Adam authorize it (which can lead to conflict between Adam and this guy).
The problem i had with other m is it was just a tone deaf fusion clone. The bottleship is just BSL, adam is ordering you around, they're breeding bioweapons, ridley is back, you fight nightmare, metroids are back, you eject their sector, you blow up the station.
14:19 Well, precisely because she "made sure" that Ridley was dead (and on top of that the planet exploded) it is understandable that it is shocking for her to see how the bastard is still alive.
I made my alarm the E.M.M.I. chase theme and my notifications the attack cue. Those sounds no longer inspire fear in me. They are a normal part of my life.
I don't have a problem with exploring Samus' emotions, but it's just so dry in Other M. If you're going to focus on that stuff, give her emotions while she talks about it. I think a lot of my problem is just with how the lines were read. I responded much better to her anger at the end of Metroid Dread. Takes the emotion and does something with it. My other problem with Other M is that it makes the legendary "Adam' character a sexist jerk, why does he deserve to be remembered so fondly?
Maybe they should physically rerelease some of the old Metroid Mangas from the 2000s in the US where Metroid is most popular, like they did with most of the Zelda Mangas.
The scene with Ridley in Other M does make a bit more sense if you consider how you would react if you had to keep killing you own personal boogeyman cause the dude wont stay down lmao
What I would love to see for the future of the saga is: She being actively pursuit by the corrupt faction of the Galactic federation, why? She actively and disobediently thwarted Galactic Federation's plans to clone Metroids AND X parasites twice, they have enough proof to find her as a criminal against "Galactic peace". Also she is a being carrying the DNA of two of the most fearsome and powerful beings in the universe, so she herself is the biggest threat to the universe if she would desire (or went berserk or something) Alternately the saga could continue by having other factions go after her metroid of X DNA like in Dread (let's remember the Galactic federation still wants their X sample, that's why they dispatched E.M.M.I. to begin with only to be hacked by Raven Beak for his own purpose, which is the same)
I think if we had gotten to play a game that detailed more about why Samus left the Federation army and how it drove a wedge between her and Adam, then the story would have landed way better in Other M.
The way i had always understood Other M was that it was an alternate timeline instead of Fusion. thusly the title, "OTHER", as it's not really the actual story. (and to some fans not even the real Samus)
The whole "technology not being there yet" thing is such a bs excuse from sakamoto. The emmis do not do anything extraordinary that a sped up SA-X could not have done. He obviously didn't know what to do with Metroid 5, because if he had gotten a positive reception to Other M, I'm sure they'd have played it off as being Metroid 5. I'm glad we have Dread, but I do not trust the man who iced my favorite game franchise for a decade to waifu-fy Samus.
I wonder if Ian and Mercury Steam had an influence in how Samus was to be portrayed in both games. Because, under their care, it seems like they are hellbent in returning to and emphasizing Samus' depiction *as an absolute badass.* _Maybe_ that's something Sakamoto has learned to go for ever since Other M, but I dunno. I wouldn't be surprised if our Spanish friends were the ones who pitched this idea to him.
I remember talking on a stream about metroid all of us were vibing and then someone said "Other M is my favorite" Holy shit that shit went from vibing to blank stares through the screen
Just want to point out that Raven Beak's plan arguably should've worked, especially since the only thing he didn't anticipate was Samus extendo-reaching her arm into his face. He was essentially just toying with her the entire time and you can't even argue (somewhat) that he got overconfident, Samus actually just extended her arm past the point it would physically be able to reach. I guess you could argue that's part of her Metroid DNA, given what Hunter Metroids do in Prime, but that's a stretch
Yes, I'm interested in a deep dive into Metroid games. I'm always up for more Metroid! And it's such a shame to see what poor writing choices did to Adam's character. In the manga, he was a good dude. Even after they didn't see eye to eye over the incident with Ian, they did end up back on good terms. Just look at how they were with each other right before her Zero Mission. They were on good terms again, so why was he acting like a douchebag towards her a couple of years later on the bottleship? Other M did his character a MAJOR disservice.
Either they are going to keep the name Metroid for Samus' sake, since she is now a (insert spoiler here), or they are going to give subsequent entries in Samus' story a different name besides Metroid. That would be very interesting to see, the franchise going from being called Metroid to whatever name Nintendo comes up with.
Original Metroid 2 and Fusion were my first two Metroid games (I had all the handheld but none of the home Nintendo consoles until the Wii) and I distinctly remember fusion being the unfortunate black sheep of the franchise. It’s one issue that Prime came out alongside it, but the main problems were the game’s linearity and forced story when the series to there had been far more open and never really had any story outside of the intro. It wasn’t until OM came out that people really let go of the disdain, and even then some people still hate it for the above reasons. It’s definitely one of my favorites, I’ve played it through many times.
The characterization that Sakamoto had in mind for Samus would actually fit her quite well. It's too bad that with the weak localization and sub-par voice direction that the English version had, the Samus we actually _got_ was... not that.
I feel like the right direction for Nintendo to go for Metroid after Prime 4 is to either make a remake of Fusion as they were wanting to previously, especially since it elaborates on the X for the players who started with Dread, like me, or seeing where the new powers Samus has gained from her adventure on ZDR will lead to. Maybe something to do with her Metroid genes getting too much to handle, even with the possibly temporary cure from Quiet Robe?
So if absorbing the X that cloned Quiet Robe gives her his Chozo-genes as well (which leads to calming down her Metroid powers), that would imply that EVERY X she absorbs also makes her absorb/fuse with the genes of the beings the X did copy from. Now I wonder, how many X did she absorb again in the course of these two games? Wonder what her DNA actually does look like now....
For a while, i thought it was time to switch the focus away from metroids. How many times can they be destroyed, and how many times can people try to clone them? It felt like we were stuck shoehorning metroids into every plot just for the sake of it. Dread did a great job of emphasizing the fact that the metroid to which the title refers has always been Samus, the Chozo's "ultimate warrior". As we move forward, we can finally put metroids (the floaty parisites) behind us and focus on Samus' adventures independent from them. She can do anything now.
I think if they made her react in a fit of rage and gave her a "why won't you fucking die!? /stay dead!?" instead of having a panic attack and shutting down, it would've been a better show of her losing herself to her emotions. It just doesn't make sense that she'd panic after seeing Ridley AGAIN at this point, but anger/frustration at her arch nemesis not staying dead does.
yes and her unchecked rage almost offing anthony since she is used to solo so much she doesn't know how to deal with friendly fire and make this Adam main worry
@@alwaysangry2232 that also could've been an interesting way to incorporate Adam controlling her weapons. Maybe she accidentally hits someone with friendly fire at the very beginning either through the rage or just because she's not used to others on the battlefield, and Adam locks that shit down immediately if she's gonna stay with them.
@@LinkageAX ptsd can manifest as rage. I'm not saying she shouldn't have a reaction, just that shutting down after already defeating Ridley multiple times in the past doesn't really make much sense. I guess you could argue that she's frozen in place because she doesn't understand how he keeps coming back
@@LinkageAX this is a cop-out for bad writing and abandoning character progression. samus overcame her ptsd in the manga and showed her control throughout the series. she didn't break down in fusion. she didn't break down in the primes. to then throw it all away for "PtSd" is just an excuse for inconsistent and bad writing.
Metroid fusion is ironically the story of Samus (SA-x) hunting down and attempting to destroy the last living metroid (Samus) that is being given directives from an AI
Dread was clever to merge Samus with the Metroids in a way that was overt. I remember thinking when I beat that game, "I guess those kids who thought her name was Metroid are right now.". It also means that they can create any number of sequels that have nothing to do with the x parasites or the metroids and still call them Metroid. I grew up playing super Metroid and outside of hollow Knight, these games are my favorite in the genre. It depends on how I'm feeling but my favorites are generally fusion, zero mission, Super Metroid and dread. It's kind of funny that I don't rate the Castlevania series as high in terms of being good metroidvania games simply because I don't like the RPG systems in them that generally lead into a ton of grinding but then maybe it's because I wasn't exposed to them until much later in life.

53:15 5th if you include dark Aether
It would only count if normal Aether was annihilated, too.
Dude, I randomly came across your first video in this series, and as a long time Metroid fan, these have been great. Def earned a sub from me. Would love to see a video about AM2R and a deep dive on my favorite game in the series, Fusion.
The fact that Samus is planet buster level is nuts. Damn 4 planets and the Federation are not (yet) afraid of her ?
Oh hey, this is perfect timing since I've been working on a rewrite of Other M's story that removes a lot of the awkward bits and fixes the lore and character writing! I'll be happy to post a link to it once I've uploaded the first chapter if you'd like.
Fusion was my first metroid game and i loved it.
Brother
@@BigHailFan ive played most of thge other games at this point but i was really young and just had a gameboy advanced.
Metroid is my favorite game franchise from Nintendo, thank you for covering these especially in October! Would love to see more content about my girl Samus
Been loving these mentoktober videos man I can’t wait to see the theme for next year!
I'm still hung up on the fact that the story of other m contradicts the manga that chronologically predates zero mission.
"I would like to do what I have to do." 54:14
I can dig the low key supervillain energy in this quote.
Samus: open the pod bay doors, Adam.
Adam: I'm sorry Samus, I can't do that.
Just finished the whole series. This was so fascinating and entertaining to watch. Very well put together! I'd definitely gobble up any more content like this :)
nice work, man. i'll watch your deep dives for every metroid titles.
I ain't gonna say no to more Metroid content. Survival horror is definitely the way to describe fusion.
Thanks for this!
If I had a nickel for every video I've seen sponsored by sega covering a nintendo product, I'd have two, which isn't a lot but it's weird it happened twoce
Yeah yeah we know the line
You did good detective work on this video topic, Mentok.
I would be interested in your opinion regarding AM2R's development in relation to Samus Returns' development though.
There is plenty of detailed aspect about their development to discuss on the topic, after all.
I finished AM2R about a month ago and it is a must play! Its pretty easy to download and install too! So needless to say, I'd love a video of a AM2R.
As a person who is ready to abandon/ignore the lore of any video game the very moment the writing proves to be worthless, Other M was fun and I enjoyed it.
Very good overview over the Metroid timeline!
They should add a new threat immune to X-Parasites and the Metroids! :D
Can't wait for MP4.
29:46 ... THAT MOMENT ... ICONIC AF! I will always remember that!
(Down the escalator, but the scene doesn't change ... and then THIS! ... wow! changed a lot the tone for me!)
33:15 ... oh, and then THIS BOSS ... u knew, it had broken out of the area, after it was kinda caged before in the background ... this THING ... that broke gravity and let our missiles fall down uselessly ... and then it's face ... wow ... just wow.
29:50 Easily the scariest thing I've ever seen! 😱
Worth watching if it interests you
15:58 The most logical answer is because bad writing is bad.
Yeeeees please do Metroid deep dives please! Ive been hoping you would since Mario deep dives. I love your deep dives man!
Seriously, that Metroid Samus at the end of dread was just astounding.
(And yes the mistranslations that it was just a faction and not the entire GF do not help either and makes things confusing in Dread where Samus is still on good terms with the GF.)
excellent video quality 10/10! keep it up!!! great content, will sub and watch again
Just wait for them to reveal there are more Ridley clones.
We know they’re coming
I just binge watched the saga and I loved it! Please do more
these videos are so bad ass man! please keep making them
40:25 yes i am interested
Yooo! Please drop the deep dive vids!! I'm OBSESSED with Metriod rn and I've been digging for lore wherever I can find it
The problem i had with other m is it was just a tone deaf fusion clone.
The bottleship is just BSL, adam is ordering you around, they're breeding bioweapons, ridley is back, you fight nightmare, metroids are back, you eject their sector, you blow up the station.
I say do a Metroid vs remakes videos and talk about my favorite Metroidvania(zero mission), and favorite fan game also samus returns
18:08 ... oh it WAS a KILLER moment allright ...
Man honestly would like to see a game where Samus fights and expunges the evil part of the federation.
Yessss, deeper dives please!
14:19 Well, precisely because she "made sure" that Ridley was dead (and on top of that the planet exploded) it is understandable that it is shocking for her to see how the bastard is still alive.
Would love to hear more about metroid ngl
Glad to see the interest in more
@@TheMentokalso, I'm really enjoying the video, probably should have mentioned that in the first comment.
AM2R was INCREDIBLE!!! It was so good, Nintendo sent a cease and desist the minute it released.
I made my alarm the E.M.M.I. chase theme and my notifications the attack cue.
Those sounds no longer inspire fear in me. They are a normal part of my life.
Don't Worry . . . I'll End This. Once And For All - Absolute badassery.
Dread is the game Other M should have been.
9:14 ... i'd argue, that Samus most of the time in those other games also never knew, what was going on :3
Maybe they should physically rerelease some of the old Metroid Mangas from the 2000s in the US where Metroid is most popular, like they did with most of the Zelda Mangas.
You should 10/10 cover "AM2R." It's the definitive version of "Metroid II" and I will die on this hill.
The scene with Ridley in Other M does make a bit more sense if you consider how you would react if you had to keep killing you own personal boogeyman cause the dude wont stay down lmao
I'm starting to get into the Metroid saga, and this video pops in
Best marketing for sonic x shadow generation ive seen 👍😅
No way I was just going to read an ad to you all without making it special 😂
I'm sure im not alone. I'll watch any video on whatever topic you decide to cover. I love your content.
That 90s style Sonic ad 😂😂😂love it! Lol!
Also she is a being carrying the DNA of two of the most fearsome and powerful beings in the universe, so she herself is the biggest threat to the universe if she would desire (or went berserk or something)
Alternately the saga could continue by having other factions go after her metroid of X DNA like in Dread (let's remember the Galactic federation still wants their X sample, that's why they dispatched E.M.M.I. to begin with only to be hacked by Raven Beak for his own purpose, which is the same)
Kriken Empire: _>singing songs quietly in the back corner, _*_forgotten
This Metroid miniseries has been great! I wouldn't mind a revisit with more details not covered
2024 mentoktober is lit
I think if we had gotten to play a game that detailed more about why Samus left the Federation army and how it drove a wedge between her and Adam, then the story would have landed way better in Other M.
Nice video. I prefer long-format, so more details and lore, the better 👍
14:00 Maybe if they had Samus without her suit, thus having her feel defenseless.
The way i had always understood Other M was that it was an alternate timeline instead of Fusion. thusly the title, "OTHER", as it's not really the actual story. (and to some fans not even the real Samus)
8:44 can someone tell me where this music is from or what its called? I think it's a sonic game but I'm not sure
Just like the metroid games, I'll take what I can get. Gimme them deep dives!
I'll return my copy of Sonic x Shadow to support my boi!
Because, under their care, it seems like they are hellbent in returning to and emphasizing Samus' depiction *as an absolute badass.*
_Maybe_ that's something Sakamoto has learned to go for ever since Other M, but I dunno.
Yeah man I would love a Metrois Details video covering Fedforce and the others
Yes, I'm interested in a deep dive into Metroid games. I'm always up for more Metroid! And it's such a shame to see what poor writing choices did to Adam's character. In the manga, he was a good dude. Even after they didn't see eye to eye over the incident with Ian, they did end up back on good terms. Just look at how they were with each other right before her Zero Mission. They were on good terms again, so why was he acting like a douchebag towards her a couple of years later on the bottleship? Other M did his character a MAJOR disservice.
That sonic game ad was glorious 😂
THIS WAS EPIC!!!!!!
28:51 JUST realized that monster is NES booklet Kraid 😮
I think if they made her react in a fit of rage and gave her a "why won't you fucking die!? /stay dead!?" instead of having a panic attack and shutting down, it would've been a better show of her losing herself to her emotions. It just doesn't make sense that she'd panic after seeing Ridley AGAIN at this point, but anger/frustration at her arch nemesis not staying dead does.
yes and her unchecked rage almost offing anthony since she is used to solo so much she doesn't know how to deal with friendly fire and make this Adam main worry
You would understand if you had ptsd
Fusion was SOOO good btw. I really enjoyed that story ... well, most of it.
