I probably already know the entire development history for the game from the amount of DYKG videos focused on old Retro devs but I'm gonna watch this anyway.
I love watching fact videos from different creators. Yeah you'll hear the same points but maybe altered in a different order or just the creator having fun with it.
@SHADOMEGA7569 not to forget about a different creator but a different presentation… that is why I also like watching anything about retro gaming from different creators because their presentation is different…
I love Metroid, I played them all, and I can tell un ironically that a lot of my favorites moments of the series was playing Federation Force in coop with my son, the infiltration mission the cinematic when Samus save us from the large quadriped monster and seeing the reaction of my son, just gold.
In my opinion, Metroid Prime was the perfect reboot for a series. I would almost say it's a perfect game. Such a gorgeus game. Beautiful landscapes, absolutely terrifying labyrinths, great gameplay, amazing music and ambience and incredibly deep and rich story. The Prime series is my personal favourite game series ever, so the wait for MP4 has felt like an eternity. Already had the previous one preordered before it was scrapped. Maybe this time we will actually get the game
I remember all too well the hype around Prime 2. Those of us in the speedrunning community were so starved we were subscribing to Nintendo Power just to get ahold of the demo disc so we could practice speedrunning the demo! Good times!
The Metroid Prime having weapons I think is the only thing left up in the air. With the additions of Phazon Metroids and their ability to ghost through force fields and physical walls, who eventually evolve into Hopper Metroids that look like mini Primes, it seems pretty logical that a Metroid could encounter phazon, mutate to phase through the Chozo Barrier, and then become a Leviathan Guardian from the source of Talon's phazon. I believe its established around the time of release as well that Metroids evolve based on their surroundings so even though we've seen Alpha, Beta, Gama, Zeta, Omega, and Queens, it stands to reason they'd evolve differently, ie Hatchers, Hunters, Hoppers, Phazon, etc, on a different Planet(s) or exposed to different energy types
Thank God I've Subscribed to this Channel, I'm am Extremely looking forward to you Covering Metroid Fusion ! John Carpenter's the Thing meets Aliens a Perfect Combination.
@TheMentok it does seem like Nintendo would have stepped in and said 'we just did the pretty much exact same thing' but I guess Prime was doing well at the time and Fusion was a different team that wouldn't do much until Dread so my guess was they didn't care cause money. I'm more partial to the SA-X just cause I prefer 2D metroid. But for a franchise that repeats itself a lot, Samus losing her abilities, Ridley, 2 remakes, super being kind of a soft remake of the first game and then later an actual remake of the first game, Samus blows up a full on planet, metroid has enough reputation without doing the doppelganger thing twice And really close together.
Fusion did it better imo. The SA-X was invincible, you either had to run or hide until you became strong enough to face it. It not only emphasizes the urgency of the situation and how important it is to get your power ups, but better pays homage to Metroid being inspired off of Ridley Scott's Alien series, adding a splash of horror here and there. Dark Samus doesn't have the same impact.
Fantastic video and deep dive into the history man! I had no idea about any of that craziness happening with the production of the game with that Jeff screwball etc. lol. I love the first one but the induction of Dark Samas and the other bounty Hunters in 2-3 brought so much more to the lore. Hopefully they continue to expand on it even more in the long awaited 4th prime (Still can't believe it's been that long)
In the original version, they captured Metroid Prime which was described as much smaller than we saw and it physically absorbed pirate weaponry against their will. Then it returned to the crater where it presumably devoured the core and started producing phazon. Whatever the case, the lore states that the temple was there to stop phazon from spreading, not to stop what lurks within the crater.
I have a theory as to why Samus frequently loses her power ups/equipment and doesn't just stay fully powered all the time. I suspect that it's fully possible for the suit itself to handle the upgrades but Samus herself being human (enhanced human but human nonetheless) means that she can't take the strain of a fully powered power suit for much longer than a few hours. Like overclocking a computer, putting so much equipment into the suit causes wear and tear but in the case of the power suit it wears down the user.
Im not exaggerating. MPH is one of the best first person multiplayer experiences Ive ever had. They absolutley cannot drop the ball on MP4 multiplayer and they should remaster Echoes and add matchmaking. PLEASE RETRO
Prime and Prime 2 are solid. Prime 3's motion controls really made the game frustrating for me and I personally hate wrestling with a games controls. I beat Prime 3 once and will probably never play it again.
Every time I hear the story of Retro Studios and Metroid Prime's development, I learn just a little more...Thanks Mentok! Nintendo got a very good lesson in "dealing with those whacky Americans!" with Retro, didn't they?
Prime series my beloved. Honestly yeah kinda a miracle theses games existed. Iirc in prime 3 you can see him flying away just before Samus finishes him off
On the Metroid Prime creature, it really is so funny that the Alien franchise and Metroid tend to have so many parallels, obviously the former being an inspiration on the later. The way I think it could have worked better is that the Metroids are indeed genetically engineered creations by the Chozo, yet they took the basis off another being that would be later known as Metroid Prime. This parallels the mystery of the Black Goo in the Alien series, where it has been retconned that the Xenomorphs were created either by AI like David (another parallel with Mother Brain imo) or the Space Jockeys/Engineers. There seems to be a huge ? on the Black Goo if it existed prior to the Space Jockeys/Engineers and tampered with it to do several experiments or if they created it and those experiments gave rise to the Xenomorph. In both cases, it leaves open for a mysterious origin for the central creature in each series. I would like in both cases for the Metroids and Xenomorphs to be at their core an enigma, because they are best as unpredictable beings.
Great vid! I never played Prime, so I don’t know what information is given in the logs. But, I figure that metroids would have to be initially developed somewhere that’s not SR-388. Mostly because the X assimilate both form and knowledge. Very hard to make a secret weapon with them around. So the Chozo complete the metroid program, and start shipping them off to SR-388. But, they keep the original (prime) in case something happens. Then a random phazon meteor lands on the lab - tough luck. If it was already a secure area/lab, it would be reasonable that the Chozo could seal it. Not sure if the game’s artifact sealing method contradicts that though.
Hopefully MP4 is a launch title for the new nintendo console. Maybe it'll see a dual release with the original switch. Much like breath of the wild and twilight princess did.
There are some inconsistencies within the original North American release as well. The Pirates state that they were unable to access the Impact Crater via the Mines because there was an impenetrable force field around it. However, even though the intent was to seal away Metroid Prime, she was somehow outside of that force field and the Pirates were able to capture her (in her core form) at which time she then consumed their phazon stores and assimilated their weapons (which is why she has the exoskeleton). And THEN, the Pirates say that she's technically not a metroid, but genetically similar to one. Nintendo later retconned it and then in "Corruption" you can allegedly see exoskeletons strewn about the top of one of the ceilings (I've never been able to spot them, though).
My headcannon dark Samus in the prime series is a phazon powered sa-x. On that had been on the elite pirate formed by the remnants of the phazon suit it was removed when she lost the upgrade before it could incapacitate and fully replicate her as the x in fusion did
45:42 we at least got Metroid Dread which is suppose to be the end and Samus get a Cool Suit for that Game too like a Mix of the Varia Suit with the Fusion Suit from Metroid Fusion! Definitely a Game to look into!
The impression I am under after playing the MP Remaster is that some of the phazon experimented metroids developed the ability to phase through solid matter and were able to escape containment that way. The Metroid Prime being the most powerful is able to phase all the way through to the inside of the impact crater. Or becomes the most powerful after making it inside. Idk I'm a lil shaky on that part. I will have to go replay it soon.
Love your coverage! Patiently awaiting a remake of Metroid Prime 2 & 3 for the switch before the 4th on drops (Metroid is Nintendo's best series I think) would love an animated miniseries or CG movie someday if done with proper respect for the source material
I’m sure there are ways to poke holes in it. My favorite idea for Metroid Prime being a “Meteoroid” is that the Chozo were using that as a verb and not a noun. I forget where in the lore it’s mentioned but I remember the word Metroid translated to warrior in the chozo language. So calling the final boss “Metroid Prime” was more calling it the original warrior vs related to the green brain huggers.
I made a video a long time ago in with Metroid dread pretty much confirming everything I said. Yes Metroid Prime is an actual mutated Metroid that's a fact. Samus armor does exactly what Metroid Prime does. Absorb powers. In the original text yes it says that Metro Prime absorbed the security robots and weapons which would show its indication that that's why it has it's armor and the weapons that it has plus foreshadow the fact that it took samus's phazon armor. Dark Samus in Prime 3 absorb 3 of the Bounty Hunters and took their abilities. In my theory on Metroid Prime is the chozo made a Metroid to combat the Phazon. Sent it to the Leviathan but it is not only absorb the Leviathan but became it's home. Phazon is weird because does it have a life of it's own or does it have a will? Dark Samus to control of the Phaze by putting a Aura Unit in the core. Shouldn't that actually tell you that Dark Samus is not under the control of Phazon? She actually has a stronger willpower and gains control over a planet with technology and uses the phase on corruption to control all life and uses phazon as her food. The question is does Dark Samus motivation moves Beyond food. Hmm "Beyond"
Federation force would have been fine... If they held it until after the MP4 announcement. As a general rule, you don't launch a new spinoff in a drought
I'm pretty sure Dark Samus' story is done what with the source of Phazon having been destroyed. As for Sylux and he and samus have had beef since their introduction in Hunters I believe. Haven't played it so I cant say too much in that regards
Not hating on ya or nothin but, is anyone else sick of the other M varia? It's just so over used, I still see it so often when theres so many better options. (Yes I was nit picking the thumbnail.)
I would love to play these however the reason I cannot is the same reason they are no-where near perfect, the perspective. When I heard they were making it in first person I had no choice but to pass on them. beautiful games none the less.
More faithful gameplay style doesn't make it more faithful to the series. My go-to example for this is MegaMan X8. Hunters has little, if anything, to do with the Prime series as a whole.
I never liked any of the prime games. I never could get into the prime games the first person view through me off. I even like Metroid other m than the prime games.
That's funny, I don't remember Prime 3 being perfect. I remember it felt more like a lame Star Wars- and Halo-inspired game than a Metroid game because it added a focus on direct storytelling and character interactions, while having less of Metroid's traditional atmosphere of isolation, and more linear level design with free-er collectables than Prime 1 and 2. Huh.
The biggest issue with the Metroid series is, that it does not embrace its horror roots and goes for a hard R-rating, to add at least one mature brand to the Nintendo portfolio. As an adult they dont have anything appealing to me anymore.
Sorry for the wait on this one. The finale of this little Metroid mini-series will be up in a matter of days! :)

I remember when prime 2 was coming out and Nintendo power was hyoing dark Samus and thinking "didn't Fusion just do that?"
Surprisingly, Retro didn’t credit Fusion for this. It’s almost the exact same explanation for SA-X
Oh I’m embarrassed, that’s a good point.
@@poorsoul8492 why are you embarrassed? For not noticing similarities between metroid games? That's really nothing to feel at all embarrassed about.
