I just played my first couple games of Grimdark Future this weekend! 750 point battles of Orc Marauders vs. Human Defense Force. We had a lot of fun; the games were both very close (we each won one) and we didn’t spend a ton of time flipping through 400-page rulebooks plus 100-page army books. Can’t wait to play more and see how you guys get on too! :-D
I can't wait until we live in a world where most battle reports start with "This match will be your standard OPR..." and be ran entirely with beautiful OPR printed minis. Keep up the great work gang!
Great job, well presented and clear. I converted from 40K in June and I don't see myself going back. Very happy to see GDF content in more and more places on TH-cam, so thanks for that, I know it takes a lot of work. Also glad to see OnePageRules going over 4000 Patreons, so they are getting some good support.
Just a note from the melee combat involving the Bot Swarms. After a unit has fought in melee for the turn all of their melee attacks for the remainder of the round are at Quality 6+. They're 12 attacks on their charge should have only hit on a 6+ and not a 3+.
Yep, I really like this rule, but I do use a house rule called Close Combat Specialist, it’s a special trait that allows certain units(powerful melee models) to hit on 5s or 6s for subsequent melees in the round.
Yeah, this is one of those situations in which the Wolf Brothers ought to have opened up with their guns instead. Simply for a better chance of hitting.
Absolutely. It actually feels like the players are having a back-and-forth. You aren't waiting an hour for the chance to play with your half-depleted force.
I love the idea of a group of (legally-distinct-from-space-marines) charging through enemy fire, taking withering casualties, ending with a single lone space marine successfully taking the objective. I like to imagine it's something like a homing beacon for an orbital strike, or a recovered piece of intel that might be used to shatter the entire robot legion network. It just feels very thematic.
Agreed! That’s why I love to play these games. It’s not so much the game for me (winning/losing). It’s the story playing out in my head compared to what could have happened with the dice rolls.
Free rules, but they are the bare bones - even so, all their “one page rules” sets are excellent sets if rules. If you join the Patreon, for $ 5.00 - 10.00 USD a month, you get access to the full rulebooks for all of their games, as well as a “welcome pack” of stl files for 3D printing, if you are into that sort of thing (I am…). Even if you only sign up for a single month, you retain access to the download link for the rulebooks afterwards. There are also other rewards for joining the Patreon, such as a points calculator, free scenarios every month, etc. The Patreon also gives you a huge discount on purchasing their other stl files from MyMiniFactory. This month (September), it is 70% off, which is useful for purchasing back catalogues of different forces.
wow, yeah... loving this rule set. OPR brings back fast fluid gameplay where tactics not endless special rules and exemptions are key. I hated how 40K endlessly bogged down, games became three or four hour long grinds that were NOT fun anymore. OPR has given me back everything I want from a rule set.
really loving your reports. good tutorial for playing and our local group is switching from gw. hoping as i continue binging (is that spelled correctly?) on these reports some odd situations come up to learn from.
It’s a real easy rule system to learn. The rules have changed somewhat since the early videos, however. Like Prime Brothers no longer have regen I don’t think. And yes, you spelled it correctly 🙂
Do you like how the Robot Legion plays? I have an unpainted (and unused) Necron and Sisters of battle army that will be perfect for low to mid lvl games.
Quick question, I'm just reading up on OPR so I may be missing something obvious, any reason the Nec...errr...Robot bikes couls run up to the objective on the last turn to dispute it? Really like the fast games, though I believe more turns are required sometimes
I would agree and the core rules of the game are for pretty fast games. You can certainly include more by including additional rules from the main rulebook. The core experience is more what I provided. The rabbit hole is actually pretty deep.
Nitpick: When the Wolf Brothers charged the Bot Swarms around 8:30, they should have only hit on 6s in that activation because they had fought in melee that turn. Other than that, fun video!
@@angeredtsuzuki Nice! We'll work on another one soon. I would like to introduce some Orc Marauders to the story. All the signals being sent have gained the attention of greenskinned pirates!
Prime Brothers have regen :) They have their own book but can be mixed with Battle Brothers. Actually I think it’s the Prime special rule which gives regen and fearless
Thanks bud. I’m using the campaign rules on Onepagerules under Grimdark future. On a 1 they are dead, 2-5 recover and 6 is bonus xp I think. Credits are also covered.
Really enjoyed this! I'm looking at starting One Page Rules as well, though I'm going Age of Fantasy instead of GF, hopefully I can sort two armies for about £30 - £35 instead of some other games where it costs more like £200 for a single army. Really looking forward to seeing you do more Grimdark Future stuff, and would love Age of Fantasy as well if you're so inclined! I'm curious rules-wise: If the Robot bikes had charged one of the units on the objective at the end of the game, what would have happened? Even if they killed one unit, there would still be the remnants of another unit on the point. Would that be a draw? Cheers!
I think the captain while part of a unit still counts as a separate unit. So had the bikes charged vs shot they would still eliminate one unit but have two left. That’s how we played it at least! :)
@@MiniatureGameMontage I've got you. So that means that even if the bikes had charged and won, there would still be two Wolf Brothers units on the point, meaning a Wolf Brothers win anyway? The only difference would be Robot Legions risking their bikes in combat, possibly losing them?
@@Lewis-TheNthLevel That was exactly our thought process. I don't think the rules specify multiple units on a marker but that's how we played it because it made sense to us.
@@MiniatureGameMontage this is one of the things I love about these rule sets: if something is unclear, or something just “makes sense” to both players, you can just agree that the sensible decision takes precedence. This is something many, more well-known, game systems should consider adopting.
See I don't like the turn limit as a victory. It's patently obvious that the RL are about to wipe out the Wolf Bros totally. It's a weird mechanic that I think OPR should scrap. Granted I also think that they need to do a lot more balancing in their army lists.
"A lot more balancing" You mean as opposed to Gw rules which you pay $60 a book for? GW premium rules are wonky as hell. OPR do update the army lists and are very active and responsive with the community.. The next major army list update is already on the way.. for free.. What more can you ask for lol
I like it, in universe the Wolf Pack was able to hold the zone for long enough to secure reinforcements and the bots took a tactical withdrawal instead of attrition.
Just pretend that Imperial Air Support showed up, and landing craft started disgorging more Wolf Brother squads just as the last few bloodied survivors prepared for death. That's the magic of imagination.
it warms my heart to see non-GW alternatives growing in popularity
I've really started to dig this one for a clean and quick paced game
No one cares about your opinions. GW for life long live the emperor.
@@littleappocolypse What an intensely weird thing to say

This game is great as a tactical lesson about losing the attrition war but winning the game.
Another awesome video! The alternating activations are what keep me interested. Definitely gonna have to give the rules a try.

It's on my radar for a new episode. This month for sure.
The most fun I've had in 10 years playing 40K was when I started playing Grimdark Future. Funny, that.
I love the GW models without a doubt. Over the years I have collected a lot. I hope playing GDF allows me to use them :)
Whoa that was right down to the wire! I was sure the poor puppers were gonna bite it.
For sure! Rending and Flux hurt!
Great series! I'm just getting into 40K style games, this is an excellent intro to the game.

Soon there be Orc Pirates on the horizon!
