You can also use models from board games or have 3d printed ones as alternatives to warhammer. There are also other game systems that you can get more mi iature for less money than warhammer in starter boxes etc. They include song of ice and fire, conquest, kings of war, etc

I started playing Warhammer 40K back at the tail end of 1st Edition (1992). I played for 25 years, but gave up on the game shortly after 8th Edition in 2017. The endless rules bloat, supplements, formations, strategems, FAQs, and books becoming obsolete within months was simply too much. OPR's Grimdark Future rejuvenated my passion for army-sized war gaming; I brought my 40K models out of retirement. In addition, OPR inspired me to finally build and paint my ridiculous 'pile of shame' (300+ models). Now, my gaming group and I enjoy playing Grimdark Future and Firefight, and we're having a great time with it.

With just those two i've been able to make a full 2000 pt army for wood elves, goblins, vampiric undead, human empire, and more!
I hopped off the GW treadmill a few years ago, and have not regretted it for the moment. The best part is that the people who play systems other than GW seem to be less salty and more mature in general.
Games Worshop pricing and gouging has left me and my gaming friends behind. They cater to the top 1% of people with EXTREME disposable income, or people who love living in debt carrying 1000s of dollars of plastic men (that cost GW pennies to make,) on the credit cards. This looks amazing and we'll be jumping in. Will be fun to wargame without being abused by GW.
I'm definitely not the top 1% and GW's pricing hasn't been a problem for me. Why? Because I have a little thing called self control. I noticed that most people that complain about the cost of 40k are people that want to have a massive army and they want to purchase everything right away. They don't understand that this is a hobby where you are supposed to start small and eventually build up a massive collection over the course of many years. It took me 20 years to build the Imperial Guard army I have now (hundreds of infantry and about two dozen vehicles) by just buying one or two boxes of models every month. But people nowadays don't want to do that. They want the instant gratification of having everything they want immediately and then complain when it costs more to do things that way. Also, your statement about the cost of models shows a lack of understanding about how businesses work. Yes, it only costs a few cents worth of plastic to make the models, but material cost isn't the only cost associated with the models. They need a design team to design the models. That design team needs to be paid. They need workers to staff the factory where the models are actually made. They need to be paid. They need to have the plastic they bought from a supplier delivered to the factory by a shipping/delivery company. They need to be paid. The factory has utilities that need to be paid. They need to pay to have molds of models made. They need to market their products. They need to pay taxes. They need to pay for servers for their website. They need to pay customer service staff. They need to pay import taxes and tariffs to ship products to other countries. The list goes on and on and on. and all of those costs need to be covered by the sale of their products and still earn the company a little extra so the shareholders don't dump them. Are you starting to see why those models cost so much now? When you see the price of any product, not just models, the price of the materials used to make that product is far from being the only thing affecting how much the company is charging you.
I made the switch almost two years ago and it's been 100% worth it! OPR released like 8 paper mini armies and i printed them all.❤. I paid like $20-30 per 50-100 model army! With it being minis agnostic i also use minis from printableheroes, paper forge, and other high quality paper mini makers. My local gaming community loves my paper minis, i play with them every week, and i play in tournements with them. No one has been a snob or anything. I freaking love OPR❤❤❤.

Question: coherence. Is it enforced that you have to maintain coherence at all times no matter what, or can you send units out of coherence, and they just loose the associated bonuses?
The force builder in the patreon.. how versatile is it? I really like the "units are casters" aspect of Lumineth Realm Lord's in AOS. can I build that?
I'm working on a hybrid world where you can play high technology verses the fantasy and the other player made lists, I.E. WW1, WW2, Napoleonic, etc. I'm moving house so it will be a little while before I can drop it on the discord. I'm also thinking about an army in the Star Trek style.
10:43 "When moving your unit, the models in that unit must stay WITHIN 1 inch of another model in that unit AND at least 9 inches AWAY from all other models in the unit" How is this supposed to work? Is it that the whole unit should not be spread over an area of more than 9 inches in diameter?
I appreciate this video because I’ve seen a lot of hype about this game but I can see now that it’s really not for me. I totally understand the appeal but I personal enjoy the more intricate rule system that 40k offers despite it’s unfortunate aspects. Glad people are enjoying this though
We totally get that. 40k also offers that deep rule set people crave, where as OPR leans more towards getting people into the hobby/tabletop wargames. We appreciate the comment, and you giving it a watch!
I love 1-page. We made our own rules for our models and I win all the time. My opponent have lage robots and I have 3 star destroyers. His weapons can't reach my star destroyers and I can use orbital bombardment every turn. Great game.
They definitely are similar. The nice thing about OPR is that you can scale the rules to the basic one page set, or the advanced rule set. Using the basic one page rule set still gives you that good feeling of balance without skipping out on all the cool stuff!
I like the OPR stuff a lot more these days. 10ed 40k, the Primaris stuff and the massive lore violation with the Custodes have pretty much killed all of my interest in 40k at this point, so it's great to have OPR as a solid alternative. I will say I'm not a huge fan of the unit size rules (combined units). My understanding of this is that if I want a 10-woman unit of Warrior Sisters, I need to buy two sergeant upgrades, two of any equipment upgrades like the Canticle Megaphone. I wish there was an option to just buy more models for the unit instead of the Combined Units rule; it feels needlessly clunky. Also, I'm not in love with the fact that you only ever hit on 6's in melee combat. My understanding is that if neither side is wiped out, then the next turn the other unit would still need to "charge" in again because they moved back 1" so would again only hit on 6's.
The full rules do not fit on just one page. If you're interested in this game please read the full rules otherwise you might think it's for little kids if you just read the one page
There are dragons, certainly in Age of Fantasy (for the most part they can be taken as mounts for characters). But also, because the OPR rules are so flexible _and_ cross-compatible, you can easily make your own dragons if you don't like the upgrade options; I'd say the GDF Alien Hive lists would be great for something like that.
While I appreciate you trying to convey the game, by regurgitating the rules, with little snippets of cutaways for showing dice rolling, it doesn't really do a better job of explaining how things work vs read the rules. I get the exact same value out of it watching this and reading the rules. I've watched a few other how-tos and they do a better job and explaining how to play, because they demonstrate the capability more effectively. This just feels like an abridged reading of the rules. Thanks for what you do though. I'm sure it'll help others that don't want/like to read.
It kind of is, but at the same time (as a couple of the comments here point out), people absorb information in different ways. You and I might be able to get all the info we need by a read-through, but some people take in the info more readily if it's explained verbally...
What I don’t understand is when I play a age of sigmar game, I go through my army’s rules then I write down the ones I’m using with simplified clear evaluations of what they do that I understand. And then the spells and hectic actions I’m using enhancements I’m using. Finally I add final notes and the generic spells and seasonal spells and buffs I might need and the terrain rules and it all fits perfectly into one page I have gotten so good at it it honestly takes me about half an hour to go through the book and make a complete written list. And you can keep using that page as much as you like until you want to make a new list. So I really don’t see the go here it seems so similar and the one page selling pitch has just roped everyone in. Edit every one is saying you don’t need a $50 book but AOS Isn’t warhammer the tules are free online your all tripping
OPR has a free army builder, free faction rules, and you can play with any minis you have. Sounds a lot faster and cheaper than Age of Sigmar to start playing to me.
being taken off the board without being killed is dumb. them sitting there pissing themselves because they lost morale/shaken makes sense, but them just being removed outright without dying is.. dumb
So I dislike GW, but I have more than a few issues with OPR. First off your charges are 15 inches(12 inch charge plus a mandatory your opponent must move into it 3 inches)? That's a bit much especially if it's on the same board as 40k is played on. Secondly with it l there being so few rolls there is no wiggle room( the same issue in AoS like a skaven jezzail has just as hard a time as dealing dmg to a basic infantry as a giant dragon). Lastly there is no lore >.>. GW may suck as a company but they have built a lot of lore into it. Also the games being the same for scifi and fantasy make it pretty boring. And given I have not looked to see if each Faction has its on rules but if not then everything would just feel the same which my robot zombies shouldn't feel the same as space elves.
It's just a better game system, it runs better, there's less stupid crap, it's balanced. It also does have its own lore, explaining each faction's origins and how they relate to other factions. It's enough set dressing for you to get started making your own lore and build up your dudes' narrative. If you're really autistic about the GW lore, just play with that lore and use the better rules
Yea but for example in situation like mine, in which you have a more board gamer group, you can't explain all the differenti faction to 3 Person in One night (usually in board games you explain the rules and then play) as I know in most of the GW games you can't do that Yea maybe Is more casual than It, Is clear, but for example for me Is the only way I can play a Min. Game and I'm fine with that
If you look at the army builder, you will see that each army (and they have a few unique armies that aren't obvious 40k stand-ins) has some of its own characteristics/options etc. It's just not bloated with all the gimmicks that 40k has. Quite frankly, I can't remember most of those gimmicks, and it has really put me off of 40k! Also, this video just touches on something very important- the Advanced Rules (available for $5.99) give you a lot of options that add flavor to the game, and you can pick and choose which advanced rules to include! I'm excited.
OPR, the bs system made by tourney 40k players in the USA, as they wanted to be able to look at and through rules much quicker, while playing. However what that brought with it is a very two sided medal: Yes you can read the rules much faster, yes new players have it easier to catch on and yes the game is less complex, but the negatives ... oh boy. Many factions lost their charm and/or uniqueness, casual, fun and scenario play got a devastating hit compared with older editions, streamlining rules that extensively creates immense pressure on core rules with 0 loop holes, eveything has to be understandable, etc. The game has more loop holes than a swiss cheese and being able to understand the various british slangs is easier than all kinds of certain rule scenarios. Furthermore many unit types are absolutely useless, unless you stack a bazillion buffs on them, like indirect firing ones and flyers (both in 40k and current OPR Grimdark). Talking about buffs and unit, as OPR rules by design have everything about a unit in their rules description, army wide wargear, special wargear, etc. do not exists. And as you can't really balance certain things army wide anymore, guess what, you've to balance every single unit well, an impossible task; See for example Aeldari and Necrons in 40K. And what you can rule army wide, can easily get out of hand or the opposite. The current OPR are so minimalistic, that they might serve for a quick skirmish fun with some random units, but that's about it. They do not allow for uniqueness, specialisation, lore accurate stuff, etc. Long term they are boring you out a lot! And do not get me started on all the exploits, unclear stuff and more. I just can't understand why it is such a hurdle to read through a few more pages, like The Old World does it, what's the harm? The reward is so much better than OPR and current 40k and apparently AoS 4th can give you, that you never want to miss it and play like it again! Well might not be the best for tourney play, but considering more than 70% according to GW play casual, ... Oh and a little fun fact, in Europe and Japan OPR is in generally not liked at all.
The game is frankly more fun. 40k currently exists only to sell models, while opr exists to be a fun game. It was made by 40k fans and is pretty good for people who's armies get removed by rules changes. It's also way cheaper to get into as you don't need the huge rulebooks and the like
Alternate activations seem so much more balanced and immersive. Always hated the I go you go mechanics in games…it places too much emphasis on who goes first and if your opponent has a great first turn and wipes out some key units before you even get a chance them… just makes it un-fun and unrealistic. My army isn’t just going to sit there in a real battle and let the enemy shoot them while they think about what to do when it’s their turn.

Ooooooooooooooooooooooo, that sounds epic!
@@EmptyWallets Epic = easier said than done. And its got to fit on one page.
10:43 "When moving your unit, the models in that unit must stay WITHIN 1 inch of another model in that unit AND at least 9 inches AWAY from all other models in the unit"
How is this supposed to work?
Is it that the whole unit should not be spread over an area of more than 9 inches in diameter?
I play with gw minis, but you could play with plastic army men, Bones minis. Anything
Perfection👌🏼
A well‐earned sub from me!
When are you doing gloomspite how to play.
Just found your youtube and I must say, what a F%$king apted name for a tabletop wargaming channel.
Thank you
I appreciate this video because I’ve seen a lot of hype about this game but I can see now that it’s really not for me.
We appreciate the comment, and you giving it a watch!
when does being fatigued run out? next activation of that unit?
All units remove fatigue at the start of a new turn.
@@Tatoren Yeah but you could strike back with a unit that has yet to activate that turn, and become fatigued, right?
That's correct.
I love 1-page. We made our own rules for our models and I win all the time. My opponent have lage robots and I have 3 star destroyers. His weapons can't reach my star destroyers and I can use orbital bombardment every turn. Great game.
That's the way to play right there! Their army tool on their Patreon is great too!
My one issue with this game is I want a hit roll and a wound roll not just combined into 1
that's easy to just throw in, again they encourage you to do that kind of thing
I'm new to 40k and OPR, but this sounds just as complicated as trying to learn 40k. Surely I'm wrong.
They definitely are similar. The nice thing about OPR is that you can scale the rules to the basic one page set, or the advanced rule set. Using the basic one page rule set still gives you that good feeling of balance without skipping out on all the cool stuff!
Gotcha, cool! Thanks for the info!@@EmptyWallets
I will wait for no page rules
I’m just here for the paper throw up effect. 🤷🏽♀️
The full rules do not fit on just one page. If you're interested in this game please read the full rules otherwise you might think it's for little kids if you just read the one page
Yeah but where are the dragons?
There are dragons, certainly in Age of Fantasy (for the most part they can be taken as mounts for characters).
But also, because the OPR rules are so flexible _and_ cross-compatible, you can easily make your own dragons if you don't like the upgrade options; I'd say the GDF Alien Hive lists would be great for something like that.
Sooo we are not talking about the intro?!? It got my attention.
This was supposed to be a simple explanation, for a simple game... I'm so dang confused.
Download the rules. Play against your while reading of the rules. Thats the best way to learn wargaming
kings
If you set the font size small enough then 40k’s rules will all fit too. Of course it will unreadable without a microscope…
Idk why there’s a base thump every 10 seconds but it’s driving me crazy.
I also love booze!
You and I might be able to get all the info we need by a read-through, but some people take in the info more readily if it's explained verbally...
the background music is bad. Couldn't finish the f**** vid because of that.
You don't have to buy a $40 dollar book for each army every other year.
OPR has a free army builder, free faction rules, and you can play with any minis you have. Sounds a lot faster and cheaper than Age of Sigmar to start playing to me.
@LexYeen it absolutely is. Everything he said that he can do in half an hour, after years of experience, I can do in five minutes and it print off.
@@diregnome4898 but the rules are al online bro haha
@@LexYeen the rules are all online for sigmar I’m confused lol
being taken off the board without being killed is dumb. them sitting there pissing themselves because they lost morale/shaken makes sense, but them just being removed outright without dying is.. dumb
show, don't tell
Yea but for example in situation like mine, in which you have a more board gamer group, you can't explain all the differenti faction to 3 Person in One night (usually in board games you explain the rules and then play) as I know in most of the GW games you can't do that
Yea maybe Is more casual than It, Is clear, but for example for me Is the only way I can play a Min.
It makes me kinda sad watching so many people settle for such a wattered down rip-off of 40k
The game is frankly more fun. 40k currently exists only to sell models, while opr exists to be a fun game. It was made by 40k fans and is pretty good for people who's armies get removed by rules changes. It's also way cheaper to get into as you don't need the huge rulebooks and the like
I played 40K for 22 years, including at a tournament level. OPR suits certain people's needs for a game, and that's fine. Let people enjoy things.
