Down the road is Openshaw. Before 1979, Openshaw had a lot of heavy industries dotted around, steelworks etc. A lot of jobs, good money, and pubs galore. These industries employed men and women from all over East Manchester including Ashton/Tameside. The 1979 general election seen the Thatcher government come to power and that's when the likes of Openshaw, Audenshaw, Gorton, Ashton etc were turned upside down. The country went into a recession, mass redundancies, industries closed down and moved abroad, and unemployment went up. Hardly any money was invested in East Manchester. Towns were effectively abandoned with little money invested in them. Those streets and towns were once great communities, everyone knew everyone else. People moved away for work, shops and pubs closed and that downward spiral continues even today.
The country was already in recession with rising unemployment when Thatcher won. Labour and the unions had reduced the country to beggars that needed an IMF bail ouit.
Yep. Thatcher's government destroyed the manufacturing industries and replaced em with service industries. Problem there is most manufacturing was in the north and most of the service industries are on the South East. The rest of the country has been left to rot.

Northern people are a lot more down to earth. They just get on with it whatever circumstances they are in. When you go to rough areas in London, Bristol, Birmingham it’s more sketchy.
Outside of London England is pretty much a third world country now. Its heartbreaking to see it. I returned to the UK last year for a couple of weeks and left feeling in grief at what i saw and the run down state of the place.... and that was in a more affluent area in Worcestershire than what I saw here.

Sure my band played in the Witchwood before I joined, we've got flyers up in the practice room. A past bad I was in got booked there one time back in the mid 2000's but it got cancelled so I've never actually been. Shame really cos I love places like that, a bit rough round the edges but with plenty of character.
I work in north Manchester, Ashton isn't quite as bad as Harpurhey or Cheetham hill, would love to see you take a visit round there. Specifically the Embassy Club, I've never had the desire to go inside myself but would be good to from your perspective so I don't have to. Keep up the good work :)
When you walked into the Star Inn, the nostalgia of hearing that proper pub door squeeking as it opened and closed with a big bang at end! I remember so many times going into pubs like this as a kid or teenager and it felt really fun to actually be in these places when they were lively. That noise though, man ive heard that so many times, does anyone know if pub doors were actually designed exactly like this to stop people sneaking in etc to steal beer or the till, if someones out the back they can hear the door etc?
Its too bad you didn’t venture more than just around the block 😂 You have good nice pubs like the obvious spoons, then the fire station(engine room) next door to it, the ladysmith next to that and the prince of orange next to that… The feathers you missed out on, top end bar, and then the station pub the road over from feathers 😁 It is good in Ashton just know what atmosphere your comfortable with, there is even Olivers bar an underground one next to iceland on the market 😁
If Aston is bad, try Gorton or Wythenshawe. Still, things change, when I was at Manchester Uni in 2001, the Northern Quarter was pretty hanging, but fun.
The closure of pubs in the UK is no surprise. I believe the only reason they lasted so long was because of the 'monopoly' they held over the access to alcohol. Once supermarkets were free to sell booze 24/7, people no longer needed to use a 'local.'
The smoking ban started the decline - people were already struggling financially. And so the decline started regarding pub culture, loss of dominoes, darts & pool leagues. In our area in Cheshire, we had 40 Sunday league pub teams up to the early 90's - now all gone.
Partly due to the smoking ban and now they want to stop smoking in the beer gardens also Islam doesnt agree with alcohol It is a way of keeping people apart to stop socialisation
Ashton was a brilliant night out late 90's / early 2000's. Full of bars, pubs, clubs. There was a thriving house music scene where many of the DJ's went on to bigger things. We started going out around '98 when we started 6th form (Luckily the door policies were loose to say the least). Staleybridge took over though and the shootings saw the start of Ashton's downfall. I moved away years ago, but it's a shame to see what it's become.
I went to Ashton sixth form 10 years ago, whenever I drive through again it just looks worse and worse, but theres definitely worse areas in manchester. Ashton house prices stay decent and pubs stay open due to the easy manchester commute.
I was born and lived in Ashton for 42 yrs until moving to Spain 14 yrs ago . The Angel pub was run by an old school friends Parents . The Yates's wine lodge was run by the Parents of Simoni Perrotti who won the world cup with Italy in 2006 . Geoff Hurst was also born in Ashton ...

@@honestplaces good to hear pal can't wait for that one. You'll be spoilt for choice 🤣
@@honestplacestry leigh as well... unless you've already been...
Believe it or not 80s and early 90s was cracking night out - weekends rammed every pub - few fights
Sounds bangin
many great bands from Manchester. The Smiths, too, i believe
I use to go to a pub called the coach house . The toilet trough use to overflow and the whole floor was a pool of piss . The good old days 😊
Sounds bangin 🍺
@@honestplaces 😂😂😂
@@honestplaces one more story . The club across the road use to top up with Guinness with slops . And people would be crawling after 3 pints . The early 80s
Sad to see the (managed?) decline of so many towns around the country.
100%
Ashton has had a bit spent on it is the mad thing. While Hyde and Stalybridge have had less
It's not managed decline. That implies someone gives a shit about these defunct places.
@@JJPwfelli Good point!
@@diskopartizan0850 That is mad, looked pretty grim.
Looking forward to this all week. Decent pint of Guinness. Me old fella use to deliver in that area.
Get him back down there!
Northern people are a lot more down to earth. They just get on with it whatever circumstances they are in. When you go to rough areas in London, Bristol, Birmingham it’s more sketchy.
That's called 'apathy' mate.
Outside of London England is pretty much a third world country now.
Its heartbreaking to see it.
I returned to the UK last year for a couple of weeks and left feeling in grief at what i saw and the run down state of the place.... and that was in a more affluent area in Worcestershire than what I saw here.
Nonsense.
Ye but it is what it is. Best crack on
Yep, poor country attached to a rich financial centre.
London is the skid mark in the underwear of Britain.
I worked in ashton town centre in the 90s one of the worst town centres i ever worked in for threats of violence. I cant even begin to imagine what it is like to work there now
If you would have kept walking about in the centre you might have stumbled across a retro games shop 'Rewind'. Proper good and worth a visit.
better than the NQ64's?
Loved your video of a disappearing world. Still best crack on. 😃
Sure my band played in the Witchwood before I joined, we've got flyers up in the practice room. A past bad I was in got booked there one time back in the mid 2000's but it got cancelled so I've never actually been. Shame really cos I love places like that, a bit rough round the edges but with plenty of character.
Would of been mint playing there lad!
Another great video mate keep up the great content 🎉🎉
Cheers buddy 👍
When you walked into the Star Inn, the nostalgia of hearing that proper pub door squeeking as it opened and closed with a big bang at end! I remember so many times going into pubs like this as a kid or teenager and it felt really fun to actually be in these places when they were lively. That noise though, man ive heard that so many times, does anyone know if pub doors were actually designed exactly like this to stop people sneaking in etc to steal beer or the till, if someones out the back they can hear the door etc?
I wonder if Jim Royle and Twiggy were with Barb, Denise, Anthony and Dave Best in The Feathers? 🍻 ❤
🤣
@@honestplaces I saw someone else said it after I did but I’m sure everyone’s thinking it, looks like better days are ahead for poor old Ashton……..
Joe was there the boring cunt
Hi! I live in California and I'll be making my first trip to England next year and I hope to visit that Witchwood pub.
Save yourself the pain,!it's like the bronx,!only worse.😢.
"To be fair...
...It is what it is!"
That'd be a good slogan for the front of a T-shirt.
2/2!
Aah, you mentioned "the witchwood" - I remember seeing a zappa band there with some original members (the Italian drummer in particular!
Its too bad you didn’t venture more than just around the block 😂
You have good nice pubs like the obvious spoons, then the fire station(engine room) next door to it, the ladysmith next to that and the prince of orange next to that…
The feathers you missed out on, top end bar, and then the station pub the road over from feathers 😁
It is good in Ashton just know what atmosphere your comfortable with, there is even Olivers bar an underground one next to iceland on the market 😁
Once supermarkets were free to sell booze 24/7, people no longer needed to use a 'local.'
true that mate
Is what it is mate.
1st Guinness looked nice, especially for the money!
Unreal init
Yeh it did actually
I went to Ashton sixth form 10 years ago, whenever I drive through again it just looks worse and worse, but theres definitely worse areas in manchester. Ashton house prices stay decent and pubs stay open due to the easy manchester commute.
I see a new honest places video, I click
You know it makes sense 🤣 cheers pal
@@honestplacesit is what it is😊
I was born and lived in Ashton for 42 yrs until moving to Spain 14 yrs ago . The Angel pub was run by an old school friends Parents . The Yates's wine lodge was run by the Parents of Simoni Perrotti who won the world cup with Italy in 2006 . Geoff Hurst was also born in Ashton ...
We've refurbed a few of them Craft unions 😂 some proper characters in them
Crowd of us use to meet at the New Nook on Broadoak once a month and go down Ashton.. Old Vaults, Black Vaults, Yates's etc.. great nights, well oiled..😅
You should grade the smoking areas, the Beau Gestes was grim but the winner in my opinion was the Star Bars, broken tables and dying plants, proper grim!!😂
Go Preston Town Center you'll see some sights, plus it's rough in a good kinda way.
I fancy a pint now.. Cheers
Get one in!
just found you through wendell great stuff!!
I lived in Oldham Road in A-U-L from 86-90.
The Beau Gest was one of my locals. There's a lot of closed down pubs in Ashton now. Pity, because it was a buzzing place.
Yeh....people skint and the people who can afford just hop the tram
The Witchwood :D loved that place when I was 18 I pulled a 35 year old biker chick :D.
Bangin place
Do you still have her crabs
Maybe she pulled you😂
Love the old architecture there!
Ashton my home town, born and raised! No way is it the most run down. Better than Gorton pal, better than Droylsden, better than Openshaw and many more.
I'd say those other few have been done up abit more.....but yeh Gorton is deffo more rough mate
Maybe better but you’re still a yonner
ALWAYS think about visiting Ireland....I live thru you guys and I thank you sir
It's England you knob
True Ashton's not what it used to be but most run down town is Oldham, only a few pubs left in town centre it's a proper shithole😮
90% of the indigenous population don't drink
Alla be praised .
@honestplaces You should do a tour of Oldham - especially King St/Union St. Oldham's pub trade is a shambles now. (I used to do pubs there & Heywood)
Another interesting place would be Holyhead on Anglesey.
Golden Touch Thai Massage 😆
👀💦
Highlight was definitely Beau Gueste Barmaid.
Definitely a bit Tasty! 🤤😉
Fish features more like
Defo the thumbnail caught me 😅😂
Still has her teeth anyway.
Gibson Music in Ashton town centre, run by Steve Gibson,is one of the few highlights. A proper independent musical instrument shop, you can order food in there too, lovely grub.
Keep em coming. . The way Starmer and Co are going there won’t be a pub left in England in a few years.
Probs right pal
@@honestplacesshowing ur racism
14 years of the Tories rinsing the Country has caused this decline
Nice one, I was wondering when you'd get to Ashton. It's still a good night in the Witchwood too.
I'll have to venture back
Look people residents make it a shithole. I lived in a abject poverty growing up. But the shit beds we had. The shit furniture we had was spotless. The question you always ask. Who made this happen? Respect your community.
Actually the local council has shut everything down from the local swimming pool and food places on the market. You will meet some of the nicest people around down this end
@samanthatate-eo9gn I live in a shit estate some people are nasty. We don't have regular pick ups. But with respect I need and keep my shit contained. I walk past in the sidewalk shitty nappies. That what I'm talking about. Respect your community even if you have nothing.
Can you go around Oldham? See if they’re any pubs left
It was The Feathers which was the pub in The Royle Family set in Greater Manchester.
everytime we go to England our first stop is always the witchwood - give Lisa a hug from us Warren and Suzanne
Bar person @ The Star should respectfully hand their notice in after giving you a Guinness like that.
Wasn't the best
Is the Witchwood still in business ? Used to go there a lot in the 90's.
Think so
Goes into pub, orders G. Heads out to the beer garden as nobody will talk to him. Moans about G. Repeat.
Wat cam r y using ?
Dji pocket 2
Wtf happened? I grew up in A-U-L in the 80's early 90's. Ashton Market was thriving, town centre was packed every Friday/Saturday night, got a bit rough at times. The Burlington pub opposite what used to be swimming baths was sad to see. Played pool in there when I was 19 or so. Can't all be because of the tram line. There has been alot of development on the edge of town big unit retail park stuff. Maybe killed off small businesses in the centre? Looks like a third world ghost town.
Twas what it was mate.😉
I grew up in Tameside,Stalybridge to be precise from 1994 to 2019 altho had stints in Royal Navy and living in Spain in between that time and yeh Tameside was the place to be and bring a family up in GM area back in 90s and early noughties. Was in Ashton 2 month ago and deffo changed for worst now,Penny Meadow totally changed, hate that Tameside One building where they moved library in,old library was in a lovely old building full of character.
Not rough or anything but would love to see you do the Otley Run in Leeds
Gonna do manny to leeds run 👍
So...like every video, you went to see what was "kicking off" - but in this one, you found out where it actually DOES "kick off".... :)
Yeh 🤣.....but it was full of oldies reading books
@@honestplaces F you, you northern twonk None of them were reading books, and neither were you.
I live in the South East, I don't recognise these places as even being in England, it all looks like Eastern Europe to me.
You should visit Eastern Europe before talking nonsense!
The Star, I remember people talking about that when I lived in Monton more than 20 years ago.
Never drink in a flat roof pub 😂
Go to Ireland and do some pub crawls.
Youd do well , have a bit of craic, I think your like it and be well received . Youve a great outlook.
Angela Rayner's constituent.....
Wow ..bet the champagne socialists are having a great time though
Cannot stand her at all. Gross woman
Ashton might end up going Reform at the next GE, would be an improvement from Labour
@@MOT2234 I was hoping Tameside was going to vote reform at the last election, but it has been a red heartland for 40 years, so no change there then; like turkeys voting for Christmas
