As epically enjoyable each one of your trips are, it's your unscripted, spontaneous commentary that always pulls me in. The quote of the year was delivered here: "Nothing compares to not being prepared." This needs to be a bumper sticker. A T-shirt. A coffee mug. A national outdoors campaign! As someone who has slept out in the coldest temps imaginable, no truer words have ever been said. But it is also a time-tested adage for life itself.
It was great to see another video from you, Shawn! I loved the little glimpse of your RV, which looks lovely. I was particularly amazed by the big, lovely , fridge! Of course, as the RV is now your home, you need all the best, modern conveniences. It was good to see Sara, and Denali, as well as the cat. I assume the cat and Denali get along, as they must in close quarters. My cat , Beau, stays hidden, when my grand dog, Jolene, comes for a visit! The scenery was lovely on this hike; the fall colors were beautiful. I have never been to Utah or Montana, so it was good to see the different scenery. Glad you found the stove which helped to make things toasty. I had been checking for a new video from you, but then somehow missed this one for two days. Oh well, I finally saw it. I have recently returned from the Scottish highlands , and wow, that would be an interesting place to hike. I look forward to joining you on your next hike; thanks for taking us along.
Thanks, Barbara. The cat and dog love it. The cat in particular - she seems to be quite entertained with the changing view from her new windows :) I hope your Scottish Highlands trip went well! We've wanted to go there as well some day. The closest we've come to there was our Ireland trip years back. I'm sure it was pretty awesome.
The Scottish highlands are amazing. The grounds there do remind me somewhat of the Smokies, but they are huge, abrupt dramatic hills and vales, rather than mountains.@@sintax77 . You would love them. We had a great visit, though one of our Highland tours was cancelled due to the Storm, Babbet. We stayed in Edinburgh, amidst the wind and rain on that day, and toured Holyrood Palace. The next day, however the tours were back on, so we really did not miss anything. Cars and vans sometimes literally get "blown off the road," there in storms, and we did not want to experience that!
Hi Syntax! Glad to see another video! You're one of the original hiking TH-camrs ! You've turned so many people on to hiking, backpacking, and just getting outside to do something!
Live there for several years near the base, fall was always my favorite time there. Also they pronounce it We-bur instead of Weber as far as I remember.
You literally started your adventure right by my house. Can't wait to see where the trail took you 😁 Btw, yes... raccoons regularly wander this area in droves.
Wow! Thank you Shawn! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours! It was great to see you, Sarah and Denali again..and a new critter as well! Beautiful cat! The scenery was amazing, and we were very glad you decided not to go up higher. As a bonus the wood stove was quite a find, and fun to see it cleaned out and out to good use. That trail down was perfect, another good decision! Looking forward to your Dad’s cabin video, as well., and probably seeing you again. Thank you for this great Thanksgiving gift!
Thanks, Barbara. My dad's filming the new cabin vid right now. Good times :) And yes, that stove was definitely one of my my favorite trail finds. Hopefully the next person lucky enough to stumble upon it will leave it with just some cold ash inside instead of trash 🤞
Thanks for the reply, Shawn, we are looking forward to your Dad’s video. We are not hunters, came from-GASP! California! 😳but my dad hunted when I was a little girl in Ohio. I never got to go with him because at the time only men hunted…that was in the late 50’s…so that was awhile ago.😅 But we enjoy learning all about hunting, never realized that there was so much involved in it. (Those old western shows made it look easy: point, shoot: instant dinner! ) Anyway Merry Christmas to you, Sarah, Denali and kitty…
The difference in weather from the week I hiked this trip until the next was pretty intense. By the time we left a week later the mountain ranges were pretty heavily snowcapped. I definitely lucked out timing-wise on this one 😬
I admire you. I only have one qualm if you will; when you reach a beautiful clearing on the top of the world and you look to the picturesque “bustle” below in awesome silence… you somehow have enough strength to leave that behind and go back to chaos and modern society. It would break my heart to have to go back and leave that amazingness behind me.
..Most likely a pioneer cabin in the area .... but seeing how it was set ,on a pad of stone and with no stove pipe around ,, someone probably took it out of an old shack to take home with them and gave up .... small but still probably crazy heavy ..
Yeah, that stove base was pretty solid indeed. It made for some nice radiant heat once it got cranking though. I'm think I'm pretty spoiled after that find
Beautiful scenery up there. That was a lucky find that stove out there and it made you think again about you being out there to have fun. Glad you decided to stay and relax. Thanks for the video.
Nice video! I live and grew up in SLC and appreciated watching your trip. I want you to know that you really lucked out with your timing. This October was one of the warmest we have had in my memory (72yrs) and it would have been much colder at those elevations otherwise. Also, since this is a high desert, and the air is so dry, it cools off very rapidly once the sun goes down. Forty to fifty degree sifts are quite common all of the time, in the mountains, year-round. I routinely experience 90-degree highs and 40-degree lows at 8500 to 10,000 feet all summer long. And you now know that our trails are steep and rocky. Also, the cows are generally not aggressive, but don't crowd them further back in the mountains, as they are left to pasture for months at a time and don't "socialize" with people very much. They can be touchy. Just ask my little girl, Thalia, who got chased by a calf when she tried to sniff it and had to hide behind me. By the way, she has four feet and a tail. LOL! I would recommend you try some High Uinta trails in the summer, if you want to see some real scenery. The Uinta Highline Trail is long (102 miles if I remember and it can be hiked in sections) and glorious. There is, generally, also less scrub oak and shrubs there. Easier to go off trail and to find a good camp site.
Thanks, Robert. I'll have to keep the Uinta region in mind for a return trip as well. We spoke to few locals out there that mentioned us being lucky with the warmer than normal temps as well.
Nice backpacking trip. We were backpacking in the Porcupine Mountains up in my area about the same time. It was just a little colder up here. Thanks again for another Sintax video! 👍
I cannot believe how absolutely beautiful those tree and scenery are. I've never left the East Coast. I thought autumn was beautiful here. When you were talking about the fighter jets it reminded me of a few weeks ago. The Eagles were playing the Cowboys and the fighter jets did a fly by at the stadium. I live in the suburbs of Philly and they flew by here and OMG they were so loud I could feel it in my stomach. It shook my house. Lol Thank for sharing your adventures with us. Especially for all of us who will never be able to travel.
Yeah, three weeks of fighter jets on approach from 9-5 everyday was a bit intense, haha. We surprisingly got somewhat used to it, but everywhere else we've gone since does sound extra quiet now :D
Some of the best fall foliage I've seen this year esp w/the drought in the mid Atlantic.. U R getting older & wiser since I 1st startedfollowing you.. ! Happy Turkey Day !!
It looks like Denali pup wanted to go with You. LOL! What a great video! The eye candy on the bushes and trees is sooo pretty! Your hike was just perfect and I really enjoyed coming along. Yeah that is a real issue come Autumn time with the temp disparity at different times of day. And water can be a frustrating thing to find Anywhere! But You did a great job! Thank You for Your excellent photography. PLEASE don't wait for so long to share the next one!
In the western states there is strong outdoor and camping culture. Part of that culture is that people have places they camp at routinely. Like several times a year. Its not unusual in those cases to leave gear stored at such sites like extra firewood, or in your case a wood stove. Usually people want to share preprepared firewood. But you are not supposed to take or loot tools or wood stoves from a spot. They may have also left it there to share with others thinking that others will understand and leave it at the spot and everyone is benefited by it being there. A few people I know and myself do it this way. And it promotes also the good will and feeling.
..nice to think good of people ,, but stove was probably taken from the remains of an old fallen structure and left where it was because of weight or fear of being caught with it ...
Thank you so much for taking me along on your camping trip Due to having 4 surgeries on my knees it’s so hard walking up stairs now little alone mountain trails wishing I could still do those kinds of trips Now I’m just living through your day thank you so much again
Nice to see you again! Have been wondering where you've been and here you are! Love all the gorgeous fall color and the wood stove camp. Stay healthy and warm. Happy Holidays, too!

hey sintax77, enjoying all your video's. My favorite is the one with a blizzard & a cabin with two fireplaces. note: watching netflix, saw Robert Redford movie, "A Walk in the Woods" etc. That would be interesting watching your journey, up or down the whole Appalachian Trail.
If you are still in Utah see if you can get a permit for The Wave. Day hike with unreal scenery. If you can’t score a permit contact a guide group out of Kanab and go to White Pockets! Loved your content for years. Thank you.
So I just found your channel. I love Sara. She is such a positive person. I see it's been a while since she went out with ya. I think she should go. She's always in a good mood. I will definitely do more binge watching your channel. Be safe.
Sintax, are you no longer anchored to the Philly area for your work? Or, are you also working remotely? I fully realize you can’t respond to all these comments as your subs continue to rise, but an early follower is truly curious . . .
Hey, man! Yup, we're both able to work remotely and are currently exploring the country :) We're staying in warmer climates in the southwest for now, then we'll probably migrate back up north for some new hiking vids around there.
Hello! I've been watching for a long time! Really enjoy your videos! Have a question. Do you love your OV jacket? Is it warm? I have a Loftek jacket, different than yours. I really like it but it's not super warm.
Temperature is relative to clothing choice for sure. My friends tease me about my extra clothing weight, but I stay toasty:) Happy and comfy Thanksgiving
A couple of "just in case" clothing layers is almost always a good move, no doubt. Although, I don't pack a separate full outfit for each day like I did on my very first trip, haha. I think I had like 15 pounds of just clothing in my pack 😬😂
Oof! That 30's-80's thing can get nasty. I've been hotter and colder, but having to carry all those layers and which ones to put on all the time..."I sense a disturbance in the Force."
Haven't seen you with the classic pack-it gourmet in a while. Peak Refuel is delicious, but one of the more expensive brands I've found. I hesitate to say the most expensive, but definitely the most expensive I've ever purchased.
Nice! It is interesting how that stove would have gotten there! Speaking of colder temperatures reminding me of the one where the water bottle leaked in mikes sleeping bag!
A cow and a 100 lb stove. How did those get there. How did those foot prints get ahead of you in the snow past the stove. I know the cow brought the stove to you..
It is when you see two ten foot hurricane fences topped by razor wire and the big sign saying DEADLY FORCE AUTHORIZED, NO TRESPPASSING. U.S. MILITARY RESERVATION. In the middle of nowhere that you REALLY start to get worried. Those two rings of fencing mean there are guard dogs on the loose in between them.
I TAKE IT THE STOVE WAS THERE FROM A HORSE /MULE 🤷LIKELY BECAUSE THE CAMP SITE YOU WERE AT HAD WOOD AND WAS FLAT AND HAD A GREAT VIEW. CHEERS. HAPPY THANKSGIVING
This is so cool ! Right close to my home ! I have always loved your videos ! And to see one in my home state is awesome !! Thanks for sharing this with us!! Watching this the night before Thanksgiving what a cool surprise ! I love hiking and riding are single track in are beautiful mountains. Hope you can hike sometime in cash county and the unita mountains also here in Utah. Thanks again for all your videos really enjoy them !! 👍👍😎
@@sintax77 +1 on the Uintah Mountains if you are able to make your way there someday. They just have a special feel about them you can't find anywhere else. The Highline Trail is the main attraction there. Thanks for highlighting the beauty of Utah!
Okay Mr sintax I'm glad you decided to make another video nearly a month and a week later or maybe a month and 2 weeks later glad to see that you at least getting out And how is Sarah and Denali And Happy Thanksgiving to you all
I watch all of your videos You take me to places that I can no longer access because of age and disability. I do have several favorite hikes in my life. Close to home is the Bridge Mountain hike just west of Las Vegas in the Spring Mountain Range. The Kalalau Trail on the island of Kawaii north shore is spectacular. Love your content!
New video yeah! Hey btw, when you gonna have that handsome guy james back on here man?! He’s great, love that guy… I’m totally not bias in that opinion either.. just saying
I've been trying to get him back on the channel, but his popularity really blew up after that last backpacking appearance in Dolly Sods. I think he's on a book signing tour in Japan for the next month or two. Maybe next fall though...
One of these days your “food bag” habits are going to fail. Best case - you cut short a trip. Worst case - you deal with a bear Bag was too close to tree and that grocery bag is bullshit.
As epically enjoyable each one of your trips are, it's your unscripted, spontaneous commentary that always pulls me in. The quote of the year was delivered here: "Nothing compares to not being prepared."

Took a break from editing my own video to watch yours, because, you know, PRIORITIES! Utah is pretty awesome. That wood stove was a very cool find.
You make walking up those inclines look like a breeze! Well done sir! Love watching your backpacking trips!

Yup, those fall colors were amazing. Can't say I planned it that way, but it was pretty awesome.
A great video to watch and rewatch over Thanksgiving. Hope you and your family have a great holiday. Very nice fall color photography.
Thanks, Paul - Happy holidays!

Nice trip, beautiful views. 👍 I'm impressed someone would carry a cast iron stove that high in the mountains.
Still trying to figure that one out myself :)

Yeah, I really hope that guy got his cows back down by now, haha. I imagine there's quite a bit more snow up there now. ❄️☃️
Yeah, that's the thing about pitching in meadows, lots of insects (not really biting but they are just over everything) and you typically get a lot of dew in the morning and everything is damp
Just found your videos. I really like how you narrate as you go and the scenery as you travel.
Thanks, Scott. Welcome to the channel!
Always enjoy watching your new videos. I love how the plan was to be unplanned. Fine job!

Love the colors and the views! That wood burning stove was neat as well.
Beautiful scenery, but man could they use some trail maintance.
Love your cinematography!
How many SAR situations started with, "Aww, what the heck, I'll just go for it." Better to trust your gut and make a good decision.
SAR situations and a good portion of my earlier vids too 😅

Have you been in the Troy/Yaak area?
Nice! It is interesting how that stove would have gotten there! Speaking of colder temperatures reminding me of the one where the water bottle leaked in mikes sleeping bag!
Ah, yes ...good times indeed 😅
My puffy jacket is also Outdoor Vitals. It’s new so I’m just getting to break it in. So far, I really like it!
Nice! I'm digging their Nova one a lot. Crazy warm when it's fully zipped up. I think you'll like it quite a bit.

Who and how did that cat iron stove get there?? Horse back?

Very cool trip. Thanks for the video
My pleasure - Thanks, Carbs!
A cow and a 100 lb stove. How did those get there. How did those foot prints get ahead of you in the snow past the stove.
I know the cow brought the stove to you..
Alright - you got me ;)
Oh no! Not the weight of 3 liters of water! As you soon after go past a cast iron stove. LUL Well maybe they had a helicopter. LUL
You're not in Kansas (New Hampshire) anymore... 44 magnum or 10mm from here on out lol.. Lions and bigger bears are a thing out west.
...lol ,, What ,, no Tigers ?? ..
Plenty of those in Texas, actually...
You need to come out here to Colorado!
I TAKE IT THE STOVE WAS THERE FROM A HORSE /MULE 🤷LIKELY BECAUSE THE CAMP SITE YOU WERE AT HAD WOOD AND WAS FLAT AND HAD A GREAT VIEW. CHEERS. HAPPY THANKSGIVING

That sign was not a DOD warning sign.
I could tell you aren’t a Utah native right away, LOL. It’s called the We burr river. I made the same error and offended the locals.
Yeah, I definitely messed that one up, haha.

You void the warranty on east coast lungs at 6,000 feet.
I watch all of your videos
You take me to places that I can no longer access because of age and disability.
I do have several favorite hikes in my life.
Close to home is the Bridge Mountain hike just west of Las Vegas in the Spring Mountain Range.
The Kalalau Trail on the island of Kawaii north shore is spectacular.
Love your content!

Worst case - you deal with a bear
Bag was too close to tree and that grocery bag is bullshit.
