Jason S I think there is a lot of people who want to seem relevant or in the know in this strange TH-cam space to have choices influenced and confirmed from TH-cam creators. In the end - the numerous TH-cam creators are profiting on marketing marginal products which few folks ever need, even more so for those folks who diddle in video and .audio projects few will ever see.
In the end, a smartphone with a stand works as well for nearly everyone including ball cap dad.

I think so too. I cannot understand the desire to see a blurred background when you are wandering around outside with the camera pointed at you. Surely the purpose is for the viewer to see the surroundings.
The camcorder gives in focus image with smooth background. The A7iii is jerky and hit or miss...makes no sense for vlogging.
It is great for what it was designed for and that isn't vlogging.
I like the comparison but would not agree with the conclusion

I have the v90 which is the step above nx80 and I love it.Yes it only has a 1 inch but if I am in a low light situation I will just pop a tiny top light into the shoe and keep moving. I agree Anthony it is perfect for both youtube and ENG, It is great for story telling , I think to many creators are worried about shallow depth of field and less about the story telling. I get that it will not be perfect in all situations but it will shine in many video situations including Vlogging.

Camcorders have simply a smaller range of use. And most often the image quality is worse compared to a dslr or mirrorless camera (in the same price range).
Things i actually like about camcorders for videos are the unlimited recording time (with is actually just a artificial limitation), the better battery life and the superior image stabilisation.
The worst, for me, about affordable camcorders is that they are regional locked. So if i want to record with 30 fps with a camcorder i bought here in europe, i can't. But i usually just produce videos for the web and not for tv. And all mobile devices and pc displays using 60 hz ,or more. So 25 fps video looks bad. If this changed, I will maybe consider to buy one to have the possibility to record unlimited and get smooth videos without using extra stabilisation.

  • @momchilyordanov8190

I own a Canon camcorder as my main camera.
My impressions of what type of camera you should buy depends on what you plan on using it for.
Camcorders are excellent for shooting sports. They give you natural look as if you're seeing things with your own eyes.
I'd say they are also great for shooting run-and-gun documentaries.
Both situations above are when you are by yourself and you have to do everything quickly as the situation is controlling you.
You can't be at a football game and yell, "Hey, stop the game until I connect my monitor!"
If you are shooting your own movies, then the DSLR style camera would be better suited for the job. These cameras have bigger sensors and various lenses to allow you to get the look & feel you want.
They give you what everyone refers to as the Cinematic look.
In this situation, you are in control of what you are shooting.
You can take plenty of time to set everything up perfectly, which includes adding a monitor, audio, lighting, etc.
So there you have it, two different cameras, which do two different types of jobs.
My advice is to not go out and buy a camera cause you think its cool, if you do, you could end up with a camera that is wrong for the job.
Figure out what you'll be mainly using the camera for, and then go out and buy the camera that can produce the best quality video for that purpose.
Sports, weddings, vlogging, movies, documentaries, they all have their own challenges and certain cameras do a better job for each.

    • @jamalpeoples3736
      @jamalpeoples3736 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I would actually say that you're kinda wrong in your assessment. I say this b/c it's not about what you're shooting but about the look you're going for. I am super pissed when I see travel photos or video with bokeh in the background, but I also know people who love that look.

    • @ksmackvolleyball
      @ksmackvolleyball 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@jamalpeoples3736 While that is true, it is also not always practical.
For example, I have shot video of a marathon.
The only way you can follow the race is on a bicycle.
If you want a cinematic look, you don't have time to set your camera in each location along with a monitor, etc.
When the runners pass by you, you have to pack up all your gear, race to the next location before the runners get there, and setup all your gear again.
A situation like this is called "Run & Gun". You need a camcorder that is compact and turns on fast.
So even if there is a certain "look" you are trying to achieve, you're going to miss most of your shots because you won't be able to keep up with the pace of the race.

The a7iii actually has better dynamic range it's one of the best lowlight cameras on the market. His settings are probably set up for less DR and more contrast he's also using a cheap variable ND filter and he's using a lens that's not particularly "fast" the software on the handycam is set up to control noise and DR on the one and only lens it's calibrated. Also the mirrorless files are made to be color graded look at anyone who is more professional that actually professional color graded them and it's way better.

The longer depth of field helps guaranty what I'm working on stays in focus. Its been easy to set up and easy to use. When it went in for repair (after 4 years of harsh use) I went to an M50, it was nice, but way harder or should I say more fiddly, so get reliable video on. Buy both. I use the Z90 (for its SDI output) + Top LED + ME64 top mic with AVX receiver and the A73 with a wide lens. It's horses for courses and depends on the job at hand and the speed you need in use. Buttons on the NX80/Z90 makes it easier to use in rush. The A73 with wide lens takes over where the Z90 lens stops. If you need to go low profile the A73 looks like stills camera and no one will notice you. The Z90 when rigged for news looks like what it is and attracts attention!

I think that this was a good comparison. Too many people blow off camcorders as ‘old fashioned’. I have been using camcorders and ENG cameras since the 90’s. Now I use two GH5’s and a Panasonic AJ PX270. They are different cameras for different jobs. Most of my work is shooting live theatre, concerts and dance recitals. I wouldn’t want to tackle a job like these without the focal range, the servo zoom, the auto focus, the image stabilization, the audio features and the battery life of an ENG camera.

The trio of camcorders: Sony Z90 / NX80 / AX700 are well served if the user follows a few tutorial videos. There is even the free first half hour of Doug Jensen's 5 Hour Master Class that can be found on TH-cam. The menus are deep but I don't find them "bad" once you've been shown by a knowledgeable person. A lot of complaints are because of assumptions and impatience. e.g. the Menu button is awkward to reach. I agreed when I started to play with mine - until only a day later I found my finger going to it with ease without my brain getting in the way.
A few points that swung me: My introduction to video was twenty years ago with a DVCAM Sony that cost $30K back when that was real money. I like the physical format, so sue me.
On these camcorders: 6 buttons available to program as one push presets for dozens of possible options; the built in ND filters; parfocal lens (stays in focus as the lens zooms - huge feature attraction for several applications); pull out viewfinder - looks old fashioned but there's a reason for them.
What accessories would I get? A minimal cage consisting of a bottom plate and a right hand side grip I can mount an accessory zoom rocker to. This would free up my left hand for operating the controls when it's off the tripod. The supplied strap feels limiting and less secure for that. Maybe include a top plate for my digital audio recorder but I'm mostly on tripod so the recorder would be mounted down on the tripod somewhere.
I chose the AX700 because I already have an investment in portable XLR audio gear so I opted out of the NX80 or Z90 with their audio bridge handle. I learned later I gave up some features that handle incorporates unrelated to audio. Again that's the kind of information that the online tutorials reveal.

I really don't like the low depth of field with blurry background. In most VLOGs, being able to see what is in the background gives context to the talk.
The blurry background is good for interviews and in studio talk at the camera to separate you from the background.
In studio, you can use green screen. That leaves only interviews where SLR cameras are better.

  • @lijay1

I like your comparisons in this video, but can I make a little suggestion? If you divide the size of the A7iii's sensor by the size of the nx80's sensor, you'll get a multiplier that you can use for your Aperture and zoom to ACTUALLY match the footage. Tony Northrop had a really good video demonstrating this a while. back. So that f2.8 aperture you've got on the NX80 is probably more equivalent to [Aperture*Crop Factor], which is f2.8 (Aperture)*2.7(crop factor when compared to full-frame cameras) = f7.56. Now, obviously you can't get exactly f7.56, but you can choose F8.0 to get closer to what you see there. Then zoom it to 24mm*2.7, which is approximately 65mm and just back up the camera to fit properly in frame. Now your videos should be near-identical. This should make future comparison videos easier for you. Also, just as an aside, Sony's A7s line is the video-centric version of the A7 line.

Camcorders are great for on-the-go shooting where the shooter doesn't have time for "fiddlieness". With the NX80, you can begin shooting in like 2-3 seconds after you flip open the screen and capture good video and XLR audio. That can be an incredible advantage in many circumstances where you either got the shot or you didn't. If that matters to you, a camcorder is the way to go.
Sony Camcorders are tough. I've used an X70 (earlier ver of NX80) in tough outdoor circumstances since it came out. Only time it skipped a beat was when water from a big palm tree leaf drizzled on it. Still worked but couldn't access some buttons. $500 to repair from Sony, but they did a quick/great job.
Menu's: The NX video menu's don't seem complicated when coming from the video world, but may need some learning coming from the camera world. Videos out there explain what they all mean. For many users, the 'Auto' might be enough, as it's pretty good actually.
The LCD also rotates so the shooter can see themself. I guess it's assumed, but.... Video cameras aren't exactly graceful to hold onto. Might need a handle for self-shooting. Also, two card slots is nice, and audio menu is good too. But you do sacrifice some of the full-frame advantages. Depends on a shooter's needs.

I think the NX looks more like older Sony color science and the a7iii looks more Canonish. That is personal preference though and if it was me I'd just record Log and grade regardless of which one i'd be using.
About the m50, I know you like it but it's really hard to have a 4k monitor, watching a 4k video and it's mushy. Just looks like you missed focus and I know you didnt since it's canon autofocus, so it's correct. Would bet the g9 with the autofocus pulsing would be more pleasing, tbh.
I realize that it is a small setup and all, but having a Z6, a7iii and a G9 I dont understand why you would use the m50 and get a video that is not sharp.
In other news, I watch all your videos and find them amazing so i'm not a hater xD

Yeah I edit on a 5k monitor and sometimes it sucks looking at the M50 video. Its good on a 1080p and below display but it gets rough the farther up you get. But I do want to mention I don’t own all these cameras, like I mentioned in the g9 video thats a loaner that I’m borrowing from B&H. I like the m50 when I need something that just works quick and packs to almost nothing.

In Japan, the regular family uses camcorder a lot to take a video of kids, sports events, etc and I used to use camcorder most of the time. But when I started watching TH-cam I bought G7 and it was so good could not go back to the camcorder. But there is a lot of great part of camcorder: zoom is so good, stabilization is so good, no time limit and so easy to use. So there is the time that I do want to get a 4K camcorder.

I like the NX80 as it seems more realistic on what you think the lighting would look like.
But, for $2k plus? Neither in the everyday user. Are the results good? You bet, but there is no way that I would (I could) spend that much coin for any video device. It would have to be perfect for me to spend anywhere close to $1k. 2k is never never land. Just like $1k for a cell phone, not happening.... 😬

I honestly thought that the “an actual video camera” part of your title was referring to the Sony A7iii.
At one time I shot on the Sony AX100 (Camcorder) but it wasn’t versatile enough for much of the video related stuff I was trying to do. It’s really difficult to achieve certain looks that you can get from interchangeable lenses.
So I moved to the Panasonic GH5 for about a year then I eventually moved to the A7iii.

  • @christianhotter
    @christianhotter 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

For the video camera, save some money and get the Sony AX700 instead of the NX80. It's the same camera without the audio options on the handle and wi-fi. One thing to remember is that the AX 700 and NX80 added picture profiles to the camera and include HLG shooting for those who are interested in that. It should have been easier to match your cameras if you were looking to have similar colors.
The good thing I found with the video camera vs my mirrorless is that the video camera has no record time limit and is better as a 'set and forget' camera. I can start recording and come back two hours later to stop it. The lack of good low light does make it harder to use the NX80/AX700 in run and gun situations.

    • @TheEverydayDad
