Good review, I own an FDR AX700 as I did not want the top handle and needed the top shoe for either microphones or lights. Using a HLG profile with some increased sharpening, I barely have to touch it in post, mainly bitrate reduction to get the size down.
I went for the NX80 and for me it was a natural step from my AX100 especially with the sound handle and improved auto focus. Would love a 4K 50p upgrade but somehow don’t think it’s going to happen. This winter’s project is to learn about HDR workflow.
Great little video you did here. I've used the Z90 and its a great camera. it would be interesting to see Panasonic step up now with the same idea (at the same size, features, price point) etc.
Hi Carl, I fully agree with this quick review of 5 pros about the Z90. I own it's predecessor, the X70 with 4k upgrade, and yes, the image quality is just incredible for such a small camera. I met some weeks ago a cameraman working for a TV-channel, he had a big camera, and he told me that in some circumstances, the small X70 can produce as nice image as his big (but a bit old) camera, or even better images... So these little cameras (z90 and x70) are really good for basic reportages or events, and complete and match very well, as 2nd camera, with the z150 or z190 or other Sonys ! My next purchase will probably be this Z90. It would be great if it could record 4:2:2 10 bit in real 4K...
the ax700 should surely have been mentioned. really it's the same as the nx80 with out the handle. Shoots everything the same and streaming a bit better but we are talking about run and gun so it should have at least had a mention. I think.
hi, i habe a question, can the z90 or nx90 output 4k via hdmi while recording internally 4k? and can they do proxy recording while 4k recording internally? i own an ax700 and it cannot do 4k rwcording internally and output 1080p via jdmi, very disappointing
Questions: What's the battery life? Does it shoot in 10bit? Does it output 10bit? how does it work for online streaming? how good is the slow motion? how is the image stabilization?
I would like Sony to rethink how video is transferred to computer. A mini-USB port? That won't last long. Reading from cards? iMovie can't. Nor can I understand the file structure.
Slightly off topic - why doesn't Panasonic have a prosumer "fat handycam" style model in its lineup? I used to have a Panasonic DVC-30 that was this kind of body and it was perfect for me. Even Canon has several models in this style. Why would Panasonic miss out on this market?
Pros of a camcorder: Better inputs and outputs Usability Designed ground up for video Better audio Cons Can’t change lenses. Mirrorless camera Pro: you can take photos Con: it’s a photo camera
I am kinda caught up between Z90 and Z150....I would love to have the Z150 but for the size only. Your recommendation would be highly appreciated. If there isn't much of picture quality difference, I would go for the Z90.
What about the problems with the audio you can adjust it while listening to the person you have to go back into the menu in order to Justin I think that's not good I'm still thinking about getting it if I could find another camera as good as that one that you can adjust the audio while listening to somebody I'll probably go with that
Great video! I'm looking to get the NX80. My main objective is to get birds in flight with the best image quality possible. At this price range is there any other camera you know of that would be a better option for this than the nx80?
Carl very clear video as usual thanks. If I want to record in 4K and out put through the sdi to a Blackmagic video assist 7 to record in prores. Would I still get a 4.2.0 or could I get a 4.2.2 in either 8 or 10 bit?
Hi ! Great content as always. Between Sony NX-80 and Panasonic Cx-7, which one do you suggest for better overall performance ? Like feature wise and quality wise ? Use case will be for youtube content and recording of small scall events and live streaming. Both of these cameras come with in-built streaming capability. Any advice is greatly appreciated !
Hey, nice video! I have this camera (NX80). I am having an issue with visual noise. I have the gain set to 0 but still get noise inside. Unless I'm outside in daylight, it gets grainy. Any advice on how to reduce noise on this camera? Thank you!
Good review, I own an FDR AX700 as I don't want the top handle and prefer to be able to use a Rode mike directly on top. Once you are used to it you get high quality with very few errors. Both 1080 @ 60 and 4k @ 30 are very good and with a tweaked pp10 profile with HLG, some sharpening and a few others, the only reason why I need to do post work is to get the file size down. Nothing to chase after yet until 4k @ 60 becomes available at a reasonable price. I have just about got everything working properly on a dji Pocket Osmo and I can use it where a bigger camera is not the best choice and the output can be matched without colour grading with the Sony output.
Hello my name is Vinny I'm thinking about getting the Sony z90 I was wondering though is there something new about to take its place but it's been out for three years so far and I think that's about time that something new will be coming out to replace that has happened to me before and I don't want to be stuck with a three-year-old camera something new is coming out so can you tell me what you think
I own the NX80. I bought it two years ago and it is still a useful camera. Z90 codecs are for more professional use so if you don't need that, stick with the NX80. Also, buy a decent microphone. I just ugraded to firmware v.2.00, which enables you to stream to TH-cam etcetera. I usually shoot in S-LOG, a litlle more work in post but it pays off. Hope this helps.
The only problem nowadays most Sony camcorders have a rolling shutter that ruins certain types of footage including fast lightning strikes... Hope Sony would fix this :/
Thanks for the insight, Carl! What's your take on the entry level Sony HXR-MC88 compared to more featured camera like this NX80/Z90? Do you think it is a good option for an entery level professional camcorder? Will you ever do a review on that one? Thank you in advance!
Overall I love this camera. However, I've had problems with video noise when shooting low light or mixed light with noise in the dark areas. I've had this problem in both auto and manual mode. Any tips on avoiding noise?
Are you comparing it to another camera you've used? I have found a hint on dvinfo that does help the noise, but it comes at a price and that price varies based upon the lighting. " I adjusted my DETAIL settings to Type 1 and crispening to +1 to knock down some of the noise "enhancement" you get as the gain increases. In NLE, I sometimes will pull my midtones (gamma) downward until the contrast looks pleasing, and as you pull down midtones you also reduce noise a bit and get back some contrast you lose as gain increases." In my testing the image loses sharpness, almost looks out of focus. But the noise is controllable. I am still testing though, could still be my own error.
@@jazzy2577 I've done video production full time since 1990 and owned a lot of cameras. My market has allowed for cameras costing $5000-$10000. The price of this camera is amazing for what you get. However, the noise under certain conditions and more difficulty in shooting manual are the two big negatives for me. I've found that you want to keep the gain limited to 3-6DB in low light conditions to avoid the noise. When working manually, I open the iris all the way then adjust the gain up and down as needed. If you are shooting full auto, go into the menu and limit the AGC to 3DB while adjusting the auto exposure limit to either darker or brighter for the type of conditions you will be shooting. Neat Video has a noise filter plugin for Premiere and other editors. It easily removes any noise from the NX80 footage without degrading the image. The plugin costs around $125. The same tool includes some amazing focus sharpening besides noise reduction. It has been well worth the money.
Hi Carl great video! I was just wondering why you didn't mention the "small brother" FDR AX700? Is the quality not practically identical to the other two cameras? Thanks an good night
Hi, I'm writing to you from Lima Peru. I recently acquired HXR NX80 and it really is great, your video was decisive and I am very satisfied. Now I need a bigger camera because I record ballet and theater so it is very important the fast focusing speed and its capacity in low light. Which one do you consider the best Panasonic AG CX350 or SONY PXW Z190. Thank you.
Hi Carlos Glad to hear you’re happy with your NX80 purchase. Personally I’m not certain either of those cameras are perfect for your exact situation to be honest. The CX350 looks to be a great camera, great in low light, but the autofocus is contrast based so will probably not be as good as you are used to with the NX80. On the other hand the Z190 won’t have the low light as it has smaller sensors. Really you want the autofocus performance and low light in one camera. Have you looked at the Sony z280 or canon XF705 / XF405 ? Carl
@@ProAVTV I have been using Panasonic AG AC90 for tracking the ballet dancers and for SONY FS100 open shot. Now the new NX80 is great but if I wanted 3 rings to have better control. I dont mean to be facetious, but did you notice he suggested it as a B cam for the Sony FS7? That camera is twice the price or more. Are you going to ask who can afford that?
I just picked up the Sony HXR-NX80 and I absolutely love it. It has everything I need over the previous Sony FDR-AX700 that I upgraded from.

Do a video about the pros and cons between a camcorder and a mirrorless camera
Pros of a camcorder:
Better inputs and outputs
Usability
Designed ground up for video
Better audio
Cons
Can’t change lenses.
Mirrorless camera
Pro: you can take photos
Con: it’s a photo camera
SwitchRich bigger sensor provides better low light not more creative control. Creative control is the codec involved.
