But camera's don't talk back normally, and they're a bit less judgy too. As far as I know a camera won't stop recording if you don't torque a bolt to factory specs, or possibly say something that is politically sensitive to a small number of viewers.
Everything I got right here! I've got a 2002 trailblazer with 330,000 on it. These engines are beasts. No oil burning or leaks. Still getting 18 mpg. Change oil every 5,000 and use Lucas fuel treatment consistently. Live in rust belt and frame cracked from rust. I'm gonna weld it up and keep driving.
just clocked 160K on an 02 Trailblazer owned since new, and also recently replaced the fuel tank pressure sensor. Not in the rust belt and plan to keep this vehicle a long time.
Thanks for teaching me 2 things in this video! About the o2 sensor should peg to about 1000mv during wot and that being that it went to 0 it was a fuel delivery problem. And the other thing was about an amp per 10psi for the fuel pump. You are one of the reasons why i continute to learn in this career. I may be 100% trained by GM but i still have a lot to learn!
So it is a sometimes but not always case. It is more like 0.8amps per 10psi (most of the time) and MOST vehicles go into power enrichment mode at WOT some stay switch the O2's but none that I know of drop to 0v's
@@grannyflatgarage7599 a vacuum leak can make the 02 peg early as there's unmetered air getting the system designers for the most part will desgin w.o.t to match top out put of o2 sensor if you find a vechicle that has pegged o2 sensors at half throttle its either a vacuum leak because the engine is receiving enough air to Maximize the 02 its just getting in a way the computer dont understand or its bad o2 sensor it think half way is pegged out
@@grannyflatgarage7599 WOT means the throttle plate is also fully open, there is very little to no engine vacuum during this. Engine vacuum is created by the intake stroke trying to pull air past a restriction (the throttle plate). Diesels don't have a throttle plate, hence no vacuum from them, same idea.

I think Paul Danner would suggest that you look at inrush current upon starting the pump. A low spike would indicate high resistance before the pump, a normal spike would indicate a good power feed to the pump.

Aaaaaah.... The infamous GM fuel pump. Had one go out on my 2002 Chevy Blazer (4.3) about 150 miles from home. One moment it was working, the next it wasn't. Crank, crank, crank, but no starty. Had the vehicle towed home (to the Chevy dealership). Where it proceeded to start and run for the next three days. Just as they were fixin' to call and have me pick it up, it wouldn't start. My son's 2002 Silveraldo (also 4.3), did the same thing a few months later. Gotta love that timed obsolescence!
Well sometimes you do install a aftermarket fuel pump, pump oem for my KTM 500 euro aftermarket same fit and all 50 to 100 euro depending how fast you want it to be deliverd.
There is nothing wrong with QUALITY aftermarket fuel pumps. The thing is those you find on fleabay and amazon are rarely Quality. If the part is 1/6th the cost of the part straight from the OEM (Not talking from GM price) then there is a reason it is 1/6th the price, they cut corners on a lot of stuff and materials.
I put on 2 water pumps and both were defective from factory. Oem fixed it and no issues since. Same with an aftermarket crank sensor. It worked worse then the oem one that was going bad.

Thanks Great video! You can look at the amperage spike when the pump turns on to give you an idea if the power and ground is good. If it spikes to around 20 amps you know it can carry a decent load.

Being an old timer with limited electronic diagnostic experience, I would first check the fuel pressure then immediately make the call of a bad fuel pump.

On bmws n55 they use a normal fuel pump and then a high pressure pump at the engine. Not sure how much low fuel pressure it needs but it might work at 20 if there’s enough flow.
I had an old GM 4.3 with throttle body EFI, late 80's era. The fuel pressure regulator spring rusted away to crumblies, leaving the fuel to continually bypass back to the tank. The fuel pressure was WAY less than 1psi. Amazingly, it still ran and was drivable. Performance was crappy and the OBD1 O2 sensor was going nuts, but it ran that way for most of a summer until I figured it out. No scan tools or live data back then. Plus it was a Chevy Astro and you couldn't do any thing but check oil and coolant levels without disassembling the whole interior.

I just did this with my 99 Yukon, lean codes, drivability problems and then no start, no hear the fuel pump turn on. But the real indication is he just filled the tank like my daughter did, thirty gallons of gas, siphon it out the old fashioned way. Of course I don't have a lift so get out the jack stands and do it the hard way. Ah well, a new pump is $250 for OEM and a day's labor and I saved myself $750 in labor.
Good video. I wonder why you did not look closer at the fuel pump current capture. If you lower the voltage and zoom into the waveform, maybe capture with a faster setting (I am sure you know all this and have done it many times) you could see if one or more commutators are bad or not. This, I think, would provide a definitive answer as to if the fuel pump is bad, IF the scope capture did show one or more bad/missing commutators. Maybe part of the reason why you didn't might be you would have to pull the Picoscope out to see it well enough, which takes more time. Understandable. What you have done does already show it is most likely the fuel pump if it is getting power and ground, and it is pretty definitive as well. Just something I wondered about. Anyway.... Thanks for making these videos. Especially lately, you have been making a considerable number of videos and they, are each and every one of them, are truly appreciated. Thank you. Omegaman
All good advice :) Thing is, looking at it like we did with 1 second across the screen we would have easily seen a "missing" section on the commutator as the amperage would have had a drop right to zero then right back up. It would have been very "narrow" but all the same it would have been captured pretty easy. I was just looking more for overall current than I was a "bad motor" if that makes sense?

Ha! I've got the Isuzu 4.2 in my Ascender. No GM troubles for me :) But seriously, it's been a great SUV since we bought her new in 2006. I did have to do the left front wheel bearing, so I know exactly how that sounds.
I used to do a lot of fuel pumps with full tanks. I used to use a lift and a transmission jack under the tank. Funny thing is the companies I worked for never ever had any of us pull a transmission, but those had really expensive ($1,400 to $2,000) high transmission jacks for use with vehicle lifts. The only full tanks that were hard were the 40 gal strange conformal designed tanks, which were really long for pick-up trucks or cargo vans.
One of our hotshot drivers pulled into the wrong repair shop. They soaked him with a bunch of junk yard parts: Alternator, distributor, fuel pump, carburetor, filters.... Truck would barely run. I suspect they were on a three day drunk. Fired him.
You don't need to run further tests, "It's filled to the tippy top" means absolutely the pump is bad. They NEVER fail when the tank is conveniently almost empty.
100% true... Customer calls, "hey my car, won't start." Well where is your car mama, I'll call a tow truck for you. "it's at the gas pump" OK, I'll order a fuel pump too....😐

My envoy had a extended crank unless I cycled the key a few times. Replaced the pump twice with a delphi. Both failed in 3 weeks. Put a ac Delco and all was fine

I put a new Spectra (Chinese crap) combination sender/fuel pump in my 91 Caprice Classic and the pump just quit 2 weeks after install, cost me 450 bucks for the tow and 80 for the new Delco fuel pump which I installed on the sending unit that was still and is still working... By the way it gave out between Albuquerque and Las Cruses New Mexico and I had it towed to El Paso, TX

I had an envoy that after idling for a few minutes, it would shut off like you turned the key off, almost like it was on a idle timer. It would start right back up and always ran great otherwise. BTW, there is a fuel pressure port underneath by the filter.
@@SouthMainAuto My 2005 long wheel base had a filter along the inside of the left frame rail with a port right before the filter. Maybe different n the shorties. Who knows...lol

I had a similar situation on my 1998 chevy pickup…the ground strap from starter to frame was rotted ..big time power drop to the fuel pump and tail lights…

214k on my 05 Envoy, everythings great on it except a leaking rear main and the 4L60E is slowing crawling up on deaths door.

Unless they're not available anymore, there are certain parts you just don't install aftermarket, the fuel pump is one of them.

The more difficult the part is to fit, the more you want to avoid aftermarket junk.

20 psi of fuel pressure and it stills runs. Can't say that on newer vehicles.
Or older vehicles like GM with spider injection.

I use Lucas fuel clean... haven't had fuel problems for 10 years. A little in every fill up motorcycle & car.

Funny thing is the companies I worked for never ever had any of us pull a transmission, but those had really expensive ($1,400 to $2,000) high transmission jacks for use with vehicle lifts. The only full tanks that were hard were the 40 gal strange conformal designed tanks, which were really long for pick-up trucks or cargo vans.

One of our hotshot drivers pulled into the wrong repair shop. They soaked him with a bunch of junk yard parts: Alternator, distributor, fuel pump, carburetor, filters.... Truck would barely run. I suspect they were on a three day drunk. Fired him.
You don't need to run further tests, "It's filled to the tippy top" means absolutely the pump is bad. They NEVER fail when the tank is conveniently almost empty.

My envoy had a extended crank unless I cycled the key a few times. Replaced the pump twice with a delphi. Both failed in 3 weeks. Put a ac Delco and all was fine

That's the way it always happens. Fuel pump goes out with a full tank. Did it twice with my own truck. Wasn't fun on the ground with a floor jack.

I put a new Spectra (Chinese crap) combination sender/fuel pump in my 91 Caprice Classic and the pump just quit 2 weeks after install, cost me 450 bucks for the tow and 80 for the new Delco fuel pump which I installed on the sending unit that was still and is still working... By the way it gave out between Albuquerque and Las Cruses New Mexico and I had it towed to El Paso, TX

I had an envoy that after idling for a few minutes, it would shut off like you turned the key off, almost like it was on a idle timer. It would start right back up and always ran great otherwise. BTW, there is a fuel pressure port underneath by the filter.
this one didn't have a filter ;) and I believe the port you are thinking of is for the EVAP isn't it? I could be wrong though.
@@SouthMainAuto My 2005 long wheel base had a filter along the inside of the left frame rail with a port right before the filter. Maybe different n the shorties. Who knows...lol

I had a similar situation on my 1998 chevy pickup…the ground strap from starter to frame was rotted ..big time power drop to the fuel pump and tail lights…
