Solo Winter Camping in the Rain and Snow with the Nortent Vern 1 PC

- Join me on my first snow camp of winter. On this camp I get up the mountain and find a nice secluded spot to pitch the tent next to a frozen tarn and prepare a really nice meal for myself. Although I got to camp in the snow, it pretty much rained the entire afternoon and night which really tested the abilities of the single wall tent that I brought with me. Many companies claim to make fabrics that are so breathable that they prevent condensation. However, I have yet to find a fabric that is not susceptible to condensation if the conditions are right. Although this polycotton fabric is incredibly breathable and much better than most fabrics I’ve used in single skin tents (Nortent is very upfront on their website that condensation can occur 👍). It’s still susceptible to condensation when the conditions are right (not much wind, rainy, cold, etc). And boy were the conditions perfect for condensation on this camp. I may have complained about this tent in the video a bit but this is just the reality of using a single wall shelter. I’m still really glad I got it and I think it will do incredibly well in windy conditions. However, I just need to be conscious of the conditions I am using it in so I don’t end up with too much moisture in the tent. But despite waking up to a very soggy tent, I still really enjoyed listening to the rain all night and getting to camp on the snow. Really looking forward to future winter camps this season. Hope you enjoy the video!

Such an underrated channel, Love every video thats been uploaded🏔⛰
Too kind! I’m really glad to hear that 👍. Hope you have a great weekend!
Agree 100%
@@sheer64Thanks! Really appreciate the support 🙏😀
I agree as well...and your cooking skills on a backpacking stove are stellar. Love your reviews of the equipment as well.
100%
Jeez, you make better meals trapped in a tent than I can make in my kitchen
🙏😆 glad you liked it. It’s always a fun challenge cooking with my small camping cookware. Appreciate the comment.
@@GoingSoloOutdoors Hello. Do you practice cooking this meal with the outdoor gear prior to going camping?
@@insaforpresprod no but I’ve used a lot of this cooking gear many times over the years so I am very familiar with it 👍
Thank you for your videos sir. I like your outfit btw, you look like a gentleman-tourist, i'd say. Also i'd like to appreciate the aesthetics of your field cooking. Talking about your lightern: 1. Please remember that burning it burns the oxygen, so please mind the ventillation and your feelings, u can black out without any idea on what's gonna happen. 2. Burning propane-butane mix leads to more condensation, cause burning reaction for propane is 2C3H8+5O2=3CO2+4H2O
and for butane 2С4H10+9O2=4CO2+10H2O. As you can see u get lots of water, that then condensates on walls of your tent. Love your videos!
Happy you enjoyed the video! I appreciate your concern with the lantern but you have to remember this is not a completely sealed environment. There are vents on both sides of the tent and air is constantly coming underneath the vestibule as well, so the amount of oxygen being used in the combustion reaction isn’t much of a concern when not burning the lantern for extended periods of time. As for the combustion reaction creating water, it absolutely does 👍 but it’s negligible when you compare it to the amount of moisture a human is releasing into the air inside the tent just by breathing. It may seem counterintuitive, but although the gas lantern will not reduce the relative humity in the tent as much as just opening the vestibule, it can help to actually move moisture out of the tent because of the temperature differential that it creates. Especially with a material like polycotton which is breathable. And in practice it works really well. You can sometimes even see the water that’s been absorbed by the fabric evaporating from the material on the outside of the tent once the lantern has time to actually warm the inside of the tent. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment! (side note: the 2 is not needed in front of the propane in the first reaction and the butane reaction is 2C4H10 +13O2 -> 8 CO2 + 10 H2O so the equations are correctly balanced 👍 … sorry it’s the chemistry teacher in me) ATB
Mouth watering food❤❤❤❤ perfection 😮😮😮
Thank you. Always nice to have a proper meal when out for a camp in a beautiful place. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. ATB
Hello, a very nice camping tour. I liked it very much. The food was definitely delicious. Kind regards from Switzerland. 🤠
Thanks! It was a beautiful area for a camp. Appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. All the best
"Nothing to fancy for dinner" proceeds to knock up a lovely 5 star meal 🤣 bloody love the channel and the cooking! Always a brilliant watch, everytime!
Thanks! I suppose it was the wrong choice of words😄. I guess I meant there weren’t many ingredients or complicated steps 👍. Happy to hear you’re enjoying the video. Really appreciate the support! ATB
I appreciate the care you take setting up your shots as you hike. The quiet fog was so peaceful too. Thanks as always for the great video.
Thank you. It takes a bit of time but I try to capture the landscapes as best I can. Places like this are so beautiful. I just hope I can do it justice. Really appreciate the comment. ATB
Another great video! And that meal! WOW!
Thank you! It is always nice to see a bit of snow while out camping. Having a nice meal makes it that much cozier 👍
What a lovely adventure, phenomenal scenery my friend!
It’s a beautiful place, especially when covered in snow ❄️👍. Appreciate you watching! ATB
Thanks so much for this. I looked at this tent but couldn't source one and then I saw your Unna video. Really pleased I bought that instead. Whatever the water is I really don't want the hassle of having to waterproof a tent. Thank you for an honest review
Looking back I do believe it was waterproof however there was a significant amount of water absorbed into the fabric that was released once I rubbed up against it. Definitely not ideal. I still really like this tent but I think a double wall shelter is just much more convenient as you don’t ever really need to worry about condensation getting your gear wet in the inner tent 👍. They actually recently release a double wall version of this tent that I’m planning on checking out at some point. It’s lighter and it should be better suited to the English weather. The Unna at the moment is still one of my favorite single man tents of all time. There is just something about the simplicity of the design and the space inside that I really love!
Another fantastic adventure, hugely inspiring, slowly building up the kit to start wild camping next spring, few additions at Christmas should do it, cant wait for the next video!
Thank you! I really enjoy winter camping. Wildcamps are the best 😀⛺️. Hope you have a nice Christmas!
Can’t beat a good snow camp.Great videos throughout the year.Have a great Christmas.
A snow camp is so fun 👍. Really appreciate you continuing to watch them. Hope you have a great Christmas as well!
Brilliant. Great tent review as well
Thanks! More of a first impression. Hopefully next time I camp with it the conditions will not be as perfect for condensation 👍
Great trip. Thanks for taking us along. Food looked lush - love at first bite. Will be interesting to see how the tent does with a bit of weathering. I’ve had a lot of condensation in a Soulo. So much that it coated the inside of the fly and outside of the inner. As the wind blew and shook the tent, water dripped from the inside of the fly onto the inner and misted through the inner. Conditions were good for it. Long night, warm day followed cold night, lots of moisture in the air. Equatorial mountains. All the best.
Thanks for watching! I used a shammy in the past with single wall tents. But I stopped using them except in hot tents because I’d rather not worry about condensation. The sponge definitely works though well though. This fabric just absorbed a bit too much water to deal with by wiping it. It actually made it a bit worse. I’ll definitely still be using the tent, but probably in conditions that are less prone to condensation 👍. Appreciate the comment! Hope you have a nice weekend 😀
Thank you, very enjoyable!
Appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment 👍
Another very enjoyable video. I love the cozy feel of the inside of the tent and seeing what's happening inside. Dinner looked delicious!
Thanks. I was very happy with the meal on this camp. I don’t cook steak often so it was a nice treat. There is something cozy about a polycotton tent. It feels more like a little house because it doesn’t really budge in the breeze making it feel very sturdy. Thank you again for taking the time to comment on another video!
Awesome video in this condition as always. Very professionally done. My favorite TH-cam channel. This is my favorite time of the year - late autumn and winter, when there is enough snow, but not too much, that it is beautiful, cozy and so peaceful that you want to stay as long as possible. I wish you an amazing New Year's Eve and much success in the new year. Be healthy and all the best. 👍🤙
It was nice to have a bit of snow early in the season. It’s gotten quite warm out so hopefully the winter weather returns soon! Really appreciate the continued support. Hope you have a wonderful new year as well 👍😀.
Food looks fantastic!
Thanks! I really enjoyed this meal 👍

Great mad hair look.
As always a pleasure to watch the master chef at work.
Right 😂 I thought it was a good look 🤣. I’m DEFINITELY no master chef, but I’m glad you like the cooking part! Hope you have a nice weekend 👍
Great winter hike out and camp for you. Best wishes on your adventures in 2024.
Thanks! It was nice to see some snow this early. Hopefully more in 2024 👍. Appreciate the comment!
I just ordered a Verne 1, in silnylon. I debated waiting for the update but didn't realize that it was coming so soon, and from what i understand it's also heavier than the original design.
👍😀 I’m curious to see what the silnylon version will look like and what it will be called since they already use the name for the other Vern 1 tent with a different design. I only saw one small picture of it from the last outdoor expo. I definitely didn’t expect it to be heavier even with the inner tent. That might be a dealbreaker for me though. I’m still happy with the PC version. I just need to be more cautious of the conditions I’m pitching it in to prevent as much condensation as possible. Thanks for commenting. Hope you have a nice new year!
@@GoingSoloOutdoors likewise! I'm hoping for a lot more backpacking this year, including winter and mountaineering. 2023 was a slow year for both for me.
The leaking tent reminded me of a leave it to beaver episode. Thanks for the vid.
😂👍 appreciate the comment. Hope you have a nice weekend!
Hi, enjoy your videos, very relaxing and so well narrated, keep them coming. Take care.Signed Jim
Thanks Jim! Really appreciate you watching my back catalog of trips 🙏😀

another excellent film lad! i really like that tent, lol now i want one! the food you cook is absolutely beautiful and i’m sure tastes as good as it looks! thank you for taking us along.
Thanks! If you’re in the market for a single wall tent. This thing is a beast! I actually really like the fabric and the pole design. In the future, I just need to be more conscious of when and where I pitch it in order to minimize condensation. Really appreciate you taking the time to comment. Hope you have a nice weekend!
I really like the look and aesthetic of that tent. Very cool. Its never cold enough where I live to justify most of the tents you use, but I enjoy watching. Camping here is more about maximising airflow and keeping insects, spiders and snakes out. Sometimes I think snow would be nice
I agree. I think this is one of the prettiest tents I’ve used! The fabric feels great to the touch. When I lived in the US, I often used completely different tents than the ones I use here in the UK for the exact reasons you pointed out. Maximizing airflow and staying away from insects seemed to always be the most important things. I never really had to deal with wind or rain like I do here 👍. Appreciate the comment.
I’ve watched a couple of your videos now and love everything about them!
Just subbed!
That’s great to hear. Really appreciate the support!
Great video thanks,👍👍
Thanks! Appreciate you taking the time to comment!
Nice frame construction, and it has a quite enough space inside too.
Definitely a fantastic pole design with a really nice amount of space inside. I just need to be a little more conscious of when and where I pitch it next time to minimize the amount of condensation. But overall a fantastic single wall tent!
Have watched almost every video so far, such an underrated channel. Great content and filming, editing etc. not one to comment on video but had to acknowledge this! Awesome channel man thank you
Thank you for watching all my videos 🙏😀. It definitely takes a bit more effort to film these trips but it will be nice to look back one day when my memory of them begins to fade. Just happy others can enjoy them as well 👍. Really appreciate you taking the time to comment. All the best.

I have a friend that lives in this area and enjoys all of its beauty. They don't camp out all of the time - the lakes district is so lovely
It’s one of my favorite places in England. Wonderful towns and incredible places to get out for a hike. Appreciate the comment!
Your food make me hungry 😅.the way you cook make me watch your video again and again😊.keep it up.
Glad you enjoy the cooking! It’s always an fun part of my camp 👍
Thanks for another great video. I wish I had the kit to camp in the snow, my aim is to build it up for next snow season.
No rush. Just work your way up to it 👍. You can sometimes get away with using some non winter kit but there isn’t as much room for error in the winter. You always want to be safe! Really appreciate you watching! Hope you have a great weekend 😀
Love how you always say just basic food for tonight and then go cook meals better than I do at home looks amazing love the channel
Can I ask where you parked
Thanks! 👍 I just meant simple as in it doesn’t require a lot of ingredients and it’s easy to prepare. Really appreciate the comment!
Near Borrowdale
Good to see you out again. Looked a lot at those tents. Seem a bit heavy but a great design. I got on their site. Dedicated China production line. Really good designs. Several models. I like that one most because of the vestibules. Beautiful place. At least you didn't fall in the creek. Get you a small hand hatchet to cut that ice. Hand better now? Good vid. The more you waterproof it the more it will hold in condensation. Sleeping bag, Western Mountaineering has Gore tex bags, goose down fill different levels USA made. Moosejaw pricey units.
Thanks for watching another video. This tent is a bit heavy but I was able to maintain the same weight by bringing a lighter pack and cook kit. Definitely didn’t want to bring a hatchet or anything due to the weight. I’m going to just weather the tent for now, and it should be fine. These conditions were just horrendous for any tent, even polycotton. Overtime with polycotton fabrics the DWR coating on the outside can slowly wear off though so it may require Nikwax in the future. Which is specifically made for polycotton, and still allows it to breathe 👍. But I shouldn’t need that anytime soon. My sleeping bag, fortunately did not get wet on the this trip as I was far enough from the wall. If I’m ever in a situation where I’m concerned though, I usually just place my waterproof coat over the base of my sleeping bag. My hand is doing well now Thanks for asking! Hope you are having a nice weekend. Really appreciate the comment! ATB
nice little adventure safe yet challenging gets into nature I have similar equipment I use once in a while great adventure
Thanks! It was a fun trip. Nice to start to see some snow. Looking forward to hopefully some more this winter 👍. Appreciate the comment!
Great upload as always, interesting about the tent wasn’t expecting that but very good to know regarding the weathering piece, guess your right Hilleberg just can’t be beaten #safeashouses 😂
It was unfortunate I ended up with these conditions on my first outing with this tent. Cold, no wind and tons of rain. Nothing like the forecast 😅. Not ideal for condensation but that’s just what you get sometimes. If I had one of my double walls it would have been more comfortable but I still enjoyed the camp. I’m also still looking forward to using this tent again, hopefully with wind though. Appreciate the comment!
I'm new here, loved the video and that PC Vern 1! I walked away listening to you in my headset, no joke, you sound like the Mr. Rogers of backpacking! Fantastic, thank you.
I haven’t heard that one but having watched Mr. Rogers as a kid I will take that as a compliment 😄👍. Appreciate you taking the time to comment! ATB
You eat better camping than I do on a regular Wednesday night. Enjoyed your vid. :)
Thanks! I do enjoy cooking at camp 😀👍. Often at home my meals are geared more towards something my children will also eat. Appreciate the comment!
Great quote from Aristotle to start the video 🧐. And as always top quality content 👌. Like many others i was kinda curious about that nortent seeing it on two other channels, But your video comfirmed my thoughts about the tent. The material reminds me of the tents I used during my army cadet days. Like you I think I will stick my hillebergs with the Allak, Soulo and Enan I'm pretty much cover for all year round camping 😉 PS your channel fast becoming my favorite cooking channel 🤣
Your favorite cooking channel 😂. I’ll take that 👍. Double wall tents definitely have their advantages. I’m still looking forward to using this tent but only in conditions more appropriate for a single wall shelter. Thanks for the comment! Hope you have a nice weekend!
Always look forward to your content. Shame about the tent leaking, but it didn't dampen 😊 you're indomitable spirit.
Your culinary skills would give Tom Kerridge a run for his money.
Excellent well balanced content.
Well done.😊👍
Thanks! It wasn’t an ideal first use of the tent but it should do much better next time I use it. I still really like it a lot. I just need to make sure I choose to use it in conditions where it will be less prone to condensation. I’m no chef, but I do appreciate the compliment. Really appreciate your continued support! Hope you’re having a nice weekend 😀. ATB

Good stuff fella
Thanks! It was a fun camp 👍❄️
Great video! For the poly-cotton, I have noticed similar attributes of clothing - it takes both more time to prepare and works less well. However, there are two kinds of gear enjoyment for me - gear that I like but that doesn't work as well and gear that just works well. When these are the same, that's great, but it's not always the case. I like Hilleberg much more than other tents that I have tried to like more. Great video of many aspects of this kind of trip - especially cooking.
I completely agree. This tent definitely falls into that category for me and that’s why I wanted it. I love polycotton and I love the pole design. I knew when buying it that it was a single skin shelter and that it probably wouldn’t be as comfortable as my double wall Hillebergs. I just need to make sure I use it when the conditions are a bit more suitable for a single wall tent 👍. Appreciate the comment!
I always go for the easy pouch meal but you sir have put a spanner in the works haha looks amazing! Love the vids 👍🏼 working my way through them over Christmas, all the best
Thanks! Pouch meals definitely make more sense. Lighter and take up less pack space also. I just really enjoy cooking and it’s fun to eat a nice meal on the mountain. Really appreciate you watching the older videos! Hope you and your family have a nice Christmas! ATB
@@GoingSoloOutdoors I’m ditching the pouch meals haha have a great Christmas
You cook better camping then I cook at home.. lol
Too kind!
Great to see you loving another winter camp, and not letting an issue with your new tent trump all the great stuff going on - not least that location, those conditions, and that meal! I really hope the tent does 'weather' naturally, or worst case you find a treatment that works but isn't too much faff, too often. I must admit I've been a tad disappointed in my Fjällräven G1000 stuff for keeping me dry in rain, even when waxed multiple times (which of course also compromises breathability). I can't fault it for toughness though! Fingers crossed for you as I really, really want to like this tent - and I'm sure you do even more, having splashed out on it!
It was so nice to be able to find some snow! I’m confident the tent will be fine. I actually really love the tents pole design (maybe even more than the Soulo), the space inside, and the double vestibule doors. Being able to choose which door you want to open is really nice. I think it will perform better than most single skin tent fabrics, but it’s still a single skin tent. So you definitely have to think about that when choosing it over a double wall tent. As for the G1000 I’ve had a lot of success, not only waxing it, but also using the waterproofing spray that Fjallraven sells. So maybe try that as well 👍. Really appreciate the comment! Your latest video is still on my to do list to watch! Looking forward to it! Hope you have a nice weekend
@@GoingSoloOutdoors It's funny you say that about a hybrid Enan/Soulo because I've always thought that about the Scarp 1 with crossing poles - but this even more so! The thought of a non flappy tent in wind is almost worth putting up with a bit of a drippy face 😅. And choice of door direction is a game changer indeed. I didn't know Fjällräven did another type of proofing, I will check that out! I've used the Nikwax Cotton Proof on a similar polycotton Helikon Tex smock and it works reasonably well, although fine drizzle seems to challenge it more than big fat raindrops, oddly. Anyway, I hope you get out and make a vid before Christmas, but just in case you don't, I hope you and your family enjoy the holidays sir. Merry Christmas! Rich 👍🎄☃
An extremely wind steady, roomy, non flappy tent was precisely the reason I wanted it 👍. I will probably just bring a light Bivy bag with me next time just in case because I really do like this tent! I am not normally a fan of single wall shelters for the hills but there are enough great things about this tent, including the door selection, which I also agree is a game changer! Hope you and your family have a great Christmas as well! I have family coming into town next week so I probably won’t be able to get out again before the holidays. ATB
Very relaxed video, great atmosphere. I like the gas heater, but I just bought a UCO candle lantern, and it works well, bit of background warmth and nice ambience. I am never going back to gas.
The UCO candle lantern is one of my all time favorite pieces of gear!!!
Great vid mate not sure I would want to be in a single skin tent in winter but looks like a nice tent you cook the most amazing camping food
Thanks! I really enjoyed this meal. In below freezing conditions I think this tent will be really nice. I just got unlucky and had the worst possible conditions for condensation on this camp. Especially considering the tent is not fully weathered yet. Really appreciate you taking the time to comment!
Nice adventure for you and great weather
I was very happy I got to camp out in the snow 👍❄️. I just wish there was a bit more wind to help with the condensation.
@GoingSoloOutdoors yes i gather that ,the tent looks strong
@@Glyn69 it feels like it’s going to be a beast in the wind 👍
Very nice my friend 🤠
Thanks man! Nice to have some snow 👍❄️
really great food buddy. Sure beats those dehydrated pouches!
The dehydrated meals are definitely convenient and much lighter but for these single night trips it’s always nice to have a proper meal 😀👍
Thank you for the beautiful content. The Vern 1 PC a bit heavy in my book but so beautiful 👌 (I own the silicone-nylon Vern 1)
It’s not the lightest solo tent but it does have its advantages in certain conditions. The double wall Vern 1 definitely would have probably been a better choice for these conditions. It was supposed to be windy but on a still cold wet night like this it was a condensation storm 😅. Appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment! All the best!
That meal could go for $40 a plate. Really impressive and looks fabulous.
🙏😀 too kind! Thank you for watching another video!
Great video as usual. It's a shame you missed that big dumping of snow last week, I'd have loved to have seen that👌🏻 Cheers 👍🏻
Thanks! 😩 I know. I’m happy I got to at least see some snow but I hope the next time I get out I get to see much more! Cheers 👍
As always a great video. I've been looking at the Nortent, they look great. You made us smile when you said, "a simple meal, nothing fancy." A simple meal would be some dehydrated over priced rubbish and we love the fact that that's just not you. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Thanks! I guess that was the wrong word choice 😂. I just meant it was simple in terms of ingredients and cooking steps. If you’re in the market for a single wall shelter, I would highly recommend this tent. It’s incredibly sturdy and well-built. Thats why I wanted to get it. You just definitely need to be more conscious of where and when you pitch it to minimize condensation like any other single wall shelter 👍.
Good vid liked it. 💥
Thank you! Thanks for taking the time to comment 👍. Hope you enjoy your weekend.
Unfortunate event with the tent, thats the big downfall with the single skin tents... Great cooking as per usual. Looked like a nice little adventure...
It was a perfect storm for condensation. I should have expected it but my excitement for a new tent may have clouded my judgement a bit. Still looking forward to using it but probably only in conditions that are better suited for a single skin tent. Hope you have a nice weekend
You're back! And with my now favourite tent!! Huzzah!
😀👍❄️⛺️ I try to get at least one video out a month. Two if I’m lucky. But I’m usually not lucky. 😂
how is the tent? I love the concept, but after this video I am afraid of rain - and hesitating to buy…
@@ZaphodTube it’s a very well built tent that is incredibly sturdy in the wind. But it’s a bit heavy and you do need to be conscious of the conditions you are taking it in because its a single wall shelter and as you can see condensation can occur 👍. I really like it but unless it’s a windy day a double wall tent might be more comfortable. Hope that helps. If you’re in the market for a single skin tent it’s great!
@@ZaphodTube I've sort of gone off the idea now btw. I don't have a lot of money so when I do eventually upgrade my existing tent I'll be very careful in what I get next. The Kuiu Storm Star is a likely contender.
@@GoingSoloOutdoors I go kayaking, the extra weight is not so important. I will spent a kilo on this beauty :)
A great trip in some lovely conditions mate and a good watch. Love the look of the tent but the fabric wouldn't be for me, I've seen a few people have mentioned a Silnylon version which I think would be great. Lovely meal as always and definitely atmospheric as the darkness fell. ATB mate
Thanks man! I was really happy I was able to find some snow up top. I definitely wasn’t expecting it to be such a still night with so much rain. (damn mountain forecast) I probably would not have brought this tent in those conditions considering it had yet to be weathered, but it should be waterproof on my next camp with it. Even so, condensation is still always a possibility with a single skin shelter. Even one with the benefits of polycotton. Especially here in the UK. I have seen one picture of the Silnylon version! (I’m assuming it’s also double walled). That could be perfect for the UK. It’s just nice not to have to worry about pitching your tent in condition ripe for condensation. And with this design, I can see it probably being a real competitor to the Soulo. Provided it is stable as wind stable as this. Curious what the price will be and if it will come seam sealed. That was my only issue with their other Vern models. Seam sealing is easy but it’s just a pet peeve of mine when you’re not at least given the option to have it done before purchase. Appreciate you watching! ATB
@@GoingSoloOutdoors looks definitely roomier than the Soulo and I like the flexibility it offers with the doors - I'm still saving for that Nammatj mate 😁 have a top Christmas if you don't manage to get out again. I'm very much struggling with free time just lately, but touch wood should be out for a woodland camp this weekend mate. All the best.
@@MCMOutdoors the holidays are definitely busy. I won’t be getting out again until after Christmas. I have family coming into town this week so it’s gonna be pretty busy. The two doors are a really convenient feature. The Nammatj is such a fantastic tent. That’s definitely money well spent! Hope you have a chance to get out for a woodland camp 👍
Another great film Todd.
The tent reminded me of my Boy Scout days when we were told not to touch the material because it will cause it to leak.
You might find it shrinks a bit and becomes more water resistant or perhaps a spray treatment will help.
I’m surprised Paul Messner hasn’t experienced it too and mentioned it. Great design though.
You’ve given me some more meal ideas for home 😂.
I hope you have a nice Christmas if we don’t see you again before. Best wishes, Jiffy 👍🏻
Thanks Jiffy! I unfortunately got the perfect storm of conditions for condensation on this trip. The forecast called for 25/35 mph winds. That would have helped but I didn’t get much wind at all unfortunately. I still really like the tent and the design. And after it’s weathered, I’m sure it’ll be 100% waterproof. But it will still definitely be prone to condensation like any other single wall shelter if the conditions are right. So I just need to be more conscious of when and where I pitch it, so it doesn’t get too damp inside 👍. Which can be difficult here in the UK 😅. All the best buddy!
That steak dinner looked incredible!!
Thanks Bob it was really good 👍. Always nice to have a steak! Hope you have a nice weekend buddy!
@GoingSoloOutdoors you as well my friend!
Excellent! I never trust single skin tents either!
I use single skin tents, just not usually in the mountains. The conditions I faced were a perfect storm for condensation. I still think this is an incredibly sturdy tent with some great features, but I definitely have to be a little more conscious of when and where I pitch it, because condensation can definitely occur like with any other single skin tent. However, I do think double wall tents are a bit more practical because you don’t really have to worry about condensation.
Take care of your fingers, you don't want to have to do a Rudolph Feinnes:
"In testing the limits of his endurance to the maximum, he has also lost many of his fingers to frost bite. He told BBC Newsnight's Kirsty Wark about how the "mummified fingertips" caused him so much pain that when he returned to the UK from an expedition he cut them off with a microblade."
👍 It was cold but not quite cold enough to worry about frost bite. If my hands ever get too cold I have hot hands and gloves that can get them warm quickly. Appreciate the comment!
Your gear room must be the size of my house 😄
Love the tent, love the material and the colour looks great 👌🏼
And… superb steak! 😍
Definitely a very nice looking tent! 😅 I have a few gear storage bins and a closet where I keep my packs and my nicer tents. I try to keep it well organized.
@@GoingSoloOutdoors we’re currently looking to decorate a spare bedroom to turn it into a kit room, I think stackable boxes may be a great idea 👌🏼
Nice! They work for 👍
Nothing fancy for dinner tonight! Just steak, home fries, rosemary, garlic, creamy mushroom sauce 😂
😂👍 I guess that was the wrong choice of words. I just meant that there weren’t that many ingredients and it was a pretty simple meal to cook. Appreciate the comment! ATB
Excellent, really enjoyed that and the time you put into filming/editing. Looked like a good camp, the food as always was next level. Shame about the tent. If it were me, I'd be minded to give it another soaking in your garden and see how it fares after being 'weathered in' before treating with nikwax. Looked great though 👍
Thanks. It was a fun camp. Just happy I got to see a little snow. I won’t treat the out fabric until it has been tested again after weathering. It probably won’t need anything. The conditions I had on this camp were horrendous for condensation. If I take it below freezing or at least have wind in my next camp things should be fine 👍. Appreciate the comment buddy! Hope you have a nice week.
You know me by now I much prefer forest camping since I always cherish a good campfire. But, I hung around to see what the Master Chef was cooking up. Great meal. Now I'm hungry. Question. Have you ever looked into the Fire Maple sunflower combination stove and heater for backpacking? Seems like might be good option for heat in the cold although it works off propane cannister. Not sure how they work in the cold. Enjoyed the video as akways. Safe travels.
Appreciate you sticking around! I have seen the stove you are referring to and it’s definitely unique however I’m not really a fan of the bulk and weight of the stove. From what I’ve seen in other videos it doesn’t look like it provided great heat for cooking either. I tend to just stick with what I know works for me personally but I am seeing more and more fire maple products being used online so I may try something of theirs at some point 👍
I like your voice. It's sorta old-fashioned style American vibe from the golden eras. Heck knows why you're over here stuck in England away from the Freedom :D
Thanks! We moved here because of my wife’s work. I really enjoy our life in the English countryside. We moved here from a much busier area in the states so it’s a much nicer lifestyle for our kids and me (as someone who likes to get outdoors and away from people often 😂). Appreciate the comment. Hope you have a nice weekend!
Great vid. Glad I saw this! Was thinking soon I need to get a better tent for winter summit etc. the Soulo seems to flap about a tad. I loved the look of this. But I think it's a no 😂😂😂......enjoy the films. Keep it up 💪
Thanks! I gotta admit, I do still really like the design and space inside. I think it will be incredible in the wind, and it is nice not to hear the flapping. But I would only want to use it if the conditions for condensation were not very high. But we hardly ever get to pick those conditions here in the UK. That’s the benefit of a double wall tent. It doesn’t really matter what conditions you get. And it doesn’t matter if there is condensation as long as you are nice and dry in the inner 👍. Appreciate comment! Hope you have a great weekend.
This is like the best channel on TH-cam.
I'm so happy I found your channel. It's truly awesome.
You are awesome.
I love the food you cook, it always looks so scrumptious. Yum yum lol
Where are you? I'm thinking England
You're country is 😊 gorgeous.
What is the biggest and most dangerous predator that you have to worry about while you are camping?
Thank you for sharing your awesome adventures.
God bless you
Really happy you are enjoying the videos! Our family moved to England from the States around four years ago. It is a beautiful place! There really aren’t an any dangerous animals in the country. All the natural predators sadly all went extinct from extended human presence on this island. So no animals to worry about while camping. Thats why I often cook in the vestibule of the tent. I wouldn’t do that back home in the states. Really appreciate the comment!
What’s for dinner? 😊 always looking forward to scrumptious meals u make!
😀👍 I really enjoyed this meal!
“Alright” you’re the only one on YT who can say their catchphrase more than once in a video, ace!
Cracking winter camp, so pleased you managed to get out in a bit of snow.
Your evening meal looked delicious, may I ask what came first, your love of camping or cooking?
As alway your edits are wonderfully understated which makes for great viewing. ATB 👍👊😉
Thanks! I’d say those passions both started around the same time when I was younger. Although it wasn’t until I was in college that I really started cooking a lot for myself.
I was wincing as you drummed on the inside of the tent, extolling it's virtues. I was always taught never touch the inside if it's raining outside..Great video otherwise, fab location...Thanks for posting!
😂👍 yeah when I was editing the video I was thinking to myself 🤦♂️. It’s been a while since I’ve used a single wall shelter. Aside from my canvas Lavvu which I don’t really worry about any longer. Not sure why I thought this experience would be different. I still like the tent but I definitely remember why I prefer double wall shelters. Appreciate you watching and commenting. Hope you have a nice weekend!
Genial 👍😂
😀👍🙏
mm, thanks for sharing this. I'm a big user of single and double skin tents and I'd be pretty disappointed with that although it was 'perfect storm' conditions for condensation to be fair. I'll stick to future light fabric for now as it's performed pretty well this year. Having said that have you seen the silnylon version of that design Nortent has yet to release? Now that does look good and would love to test that one soon. Happy camping. A
It was definitely the perfect storm for condensation. I should have expected it but my judgment may have been a bit clouded by the excitement for a new tent. I’m still excited to keep using it, but in conditions a bit more appropriate for a single skin tent. I did see a picture of the silnylon version! That could be something special! Appreciate the comment. Hope you have a nice weekend 👍
Great outdoor videos, when are you launching your cooking channel?😊😋😋
Thanks! No plans for that but I will be sharing recipes for some of my other meals on a website soon 👍
Perfect steak, Chef! Inspired me to have a steak this weak)))
* week
Thanks! Love a good steak dinner sometimes 👍
That food looks amazing you eat better camping than I do at home lol
Thanks! I don’t always eat like this at home either. With my kids, simple and quick is the best is sometimes the best. For instance last night was taco Tuesday 🌮. Appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment! All the best!
@@GoingSoloOutdoors i appreciate you taking the time to read the comment I know what you mean chicken and pasta is all that my kid eats lol anyway look forward to more camping
@@tashsavage6582can’t go wrong with chicken and pasta 👍.
My favorite video so far. Love the tent, love the rain and my favorite meal is steak. That steak looked delicious. I'm going to have to try that cream sauce. Was that just heavy cream you used?
Thanks! It was just what they call single cream here in the UK. I think in the US light cream would be the equivalent 👍.
New here. I don't know about your camping skills but... as a cook, you're hired! 😅
😂👍 welcome to the channel. Glad you liked the cooking. Appreciate you taking the time to comment. Hope you have a nice weekend!
Nice video. It's a pity about the condensation. I hope you do another video with the tent when it's weathered properly to see how it copes in similar circumstances. I'd also like to see how it copes in proper wind and rain because the design looks like it would do really well in wind and rain, which is what I get a lot of in my country (more than the UK). How many tents do you have???? :D
Thanks! These definitely were not ideal conditions to take this tent out for the first time. I will be using it again now that it has been weathered, but I will still need to be careful when and where I pitch it to avoid condensation. I have no doubt it will do very well in the wind so you will absolutely see it again on the channel 👍. I actually have more tents than I’ve even shown on the channel 😅. I’ve collected/used quite a few over the years. Appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment! ATB
What a wonderful camp the tent looks great in that setting very well made. May I ask what the little meths stove is your using please thanks ian
Thanks! I am using the X-boil Stove inside the Trangia Triangle with a bioethanol 👍. A great light weight setup! Appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment! ATB
Great video! Was great to see your winter camp, shame about the new tent. Is there any budget tents you would recommend for winter camps ?
It all depends on where you are planning on camping. In a woodland or in the hills? People seem to really like the Vango Banshee. However, I’ve never used one. I would look up TGO magazines budget tent list. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching 😀👍
Jeez l would happily keep you warm😊stud muffin
😂 appreciate that but I enjoy going solo with a warm sleeping bag 👍
Great video as usual, your jacket sounds great, what model is it and does it still keep you dry in the British rain :)
It is the Fjallraven Keb Jacket. It’s not waterproof but highly water resistant. It keep me dry in all but the heaviest of downpours 👍
I always enjoy watching your videos. Especially the cooking and menus are so good! I have a question, is there a reason to use an alcohol stove? The reason why you don't use a gas stove is because it's cold and doesn't have much power?
Thank you!
Glad you enjoy the videos! I typically prefer alcohol stoves just because they’re silent and I can always see exactly how much fuel I need. I usually like to use them in the winter because I don’t have to worry about them failing or flaring up in cold temperatures. There’s no moving parts and they just work. The xboil for instance that I used in this video will light instantly in extreme cold temperatures just by touch a flame to the carbon felt. Sometimes simple is best. They are definitely not the fastest to boil water or the most efficient in some cases but I’m in no rush 👍. There are many fuel canisters that work well in cold temperatures and gas stoves with regulators and preheat tubes nowadays so it’s really just a personal preference. Appreciate the comment. Hope you have a great weekend. Have a great weekend!
One of my favourite videos that you have produced. I think the tent will improve the more you use it? Thanks for sharing ATB
Thanks! I think it will improve as well but I still have to treat it like any single wall tent and be careful when and where I pitch it or I will have to deal with condensation 👍
@@GoingSoloOutdoors I coated my polish Lavvu and it worked a treat 👍
@@garryandrews Nice 👍
That tent was on my radar until it wasn’t 😂😂
It’s a solid tent, has great interior space and has some other really nice features. But, it’s a single wall tent and it functions like one. So if you are looking for a single wall tent I would definitely recommend it. Just make sure you are aware you need to think about mitigating condensation. So conditions and tent site selection are important 👍
@@GoingSoloOutdoors Thank you for that information. I appreciate you.
@@GoingSoloOutdoors Thank you for that information. I appreciate you.
If you had a beer you could have used it to deglaze and reduce down with the mushrooms and wash the meal down with. Still looks dank af
I only had one beer with me, so I didn’t want to waste anything 😆. I was able to just add some water to the pan, bring it to a boil and wipe it down 👍. Appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment! ATB
They should make a vern 1 pc hot tent!
That would be pretty cool! I did see what looked like a picture of a Vern 1 PC design made of silnylon, which would be cool. They’ve also posted a few pictures of a Vern 2 hot tent.
Another great vid! For spring/autumn camping (in the UK), do you have any affordable tents you’d recommend?
Thanks! Depends on where you are camping? In the woods I like to use the one Tigris backwoods bungalow. I also recently got a Pomoly tent that is affordable and nice as well. In the hills, a lot of people have been happy with the LanShan 2 and the Vango Banshee. I would suggest searching for the TGO magazines budget tent list. They usually provide a nice list each year of quality budget tents they recommend 👍. Hope that helps!
Great camp!! Amazing spot. I don't blame you for complaining a little bit. I would be a lot grumpier. On the other hand, it's going to be nice to see the new winter toys in future videos. Nice you didn't fall on the creek this time. Do you intermittent-fast btw? We never see you making breakfast. Cheers!
Thanks! I was really happy to find a secluded spot with some snow! It’s a great tent I just have to be more conscious of when and where I pitch it to minimize the amount of condensation. I’ve never been much of a breakfast guy. I don’t intentionally try to fast but usually I’ll just have a coffee in the morning and then I eat around 10:30-11. Appreciate the comment. Hope you have a nice weekend!
Terrific video, although not nearly as terrific as your understated sense of culinary self-deprecation.
"Tonight for dinner, nothing too fancy" and then you produce that Masterchef masterpiece! You're having a laugh, surely?!! Seriously, are you a Michelin star chef in your day job. I couldn't have managed that meal in my kitchen. Awesome. Lovely spot, lovely meal, lovely video, interesting tent. Not for everyone, but interesting nonetheless.
Regards, Wadi.
Thank! Not a chef just a cooking enthusiast 👍. Definitely not for everyone but one of the best single wall shelters I’ve used that can probably deal with some pretty serious winds!
Nice cool relaxing watch, I like your chilled approach to the elements. Tents can be hit and miss until you find "the one" a bit like women really 😜but that condensation is really annoying, best for me is having a high level vent with inner skin, I think I found my ideal keeper, she`s called Big Agnes😝Cin cin
Thanks! Part of the fun camping for me is just dealing with whatever conditions I’m dealt so I try not to worry too much. It’s always fun regardless, rain or shine. Double wall tents are normally my preference, especially when conditions are perfect for condensation like they were on this camp. However, I think this tent will be fantastic in the wind or below freezing. I still have a BA Copper Spur HV UL 2 that I used when I lived state side. Great tent, but I don’t usually take it out here in the UK because I need something that can handle the extreme winds we can often get here. Appreciate the comment! ATB
