    Of course you can get out of DEP. It's a free country. If the recruiter tries to tell you different tell them to shove it.

    This was really helpful... I'm 18 and have been in dep for about 5 months now and started to second guess my choice of joining the navy. At the beginning I was excited and everything but during this time waiting to get my diploma and finish school and all that I began thinking that I made a wrong choice. Thank you again this video has been very helpful.

    I was put in a tough situation. I was fully committed and ready to go to basic training, however my life took an unexpected turn when I got hit with a lawsuit just days before I was set to leave. Obviously, I lost the contract and my departure date was postponed until further notice. The lawsuit is set to take a while, a year or more they said. Now it's months later and I've been having doubts. I didn't want to put my life on hold for a couple years, only to get stuck joining the Air Force. I didn't think there was a way out until right now, so I can't thank you enough for that.

    • @WorldStyleEgo
      @WorldStyleEgo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Rza Technically I was “discharged” from the DEP program, but not from the military all together. You aren’t officially a member in the armed forces until you step foot on the plane and make your way to boot camp. Being “discharged” from the DEP program means nothing. It doesn’t go on your permanent record or anything like that, and you can very easily talk a recruiter about enlisting if you ever feel up to it again.

  • @misterroperssmile8107
    @misterroperssmile8107 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    I believe the reality is that, once you've "DEPed In" if they truly wanted to drag you away kicking and screaming, they could. However, the current policy of all four branches is that they will not do this. And recruiters are not allowed to threaten it. They are, however, obligated to attempt to change the enlistees mind, and get them back "with the program." If that fail, they have to promptly begin the paperwork for separation. That's how it's supposed to work. Desperate recruiters sometimes do resort to desperate measure and tell people things like, "You'll go Leavenworth." "You'll never be able to get a student loan." They do this because with each "DEP loss" the recruiter and the station commander get banged up over it. The way it's looked at from the Powers That Be is: "You, as a Recruiter, didn't do enough to keep this enlistee motivated."

  • @beastmarco4527
    @beastmarco4527 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    “Under no circumstances will [a recruiter] threaten, coerce, manipulate, or intimidate D. E. P. members, nor may they obstruct separation requests. (USAREC Reg 601-56§3-1.c) … At no time will any [recruiter] tell a D. E. P. enlistee he or she must ‘go in the Army or he or she will go to jail,’ or that ‘failure to enlist will result in a black mark on his or her credit record,’ or any other statement indicating adverse action will occur if the applicant fails to enlist.” (Excerpted from USAREC Reg 601-95 §3-1.b.; see also USAREC Reg 601-45 §2-3.h.)
    If they question this just say: By what authority are you violating military regulations?

    Yoon...great video. I found out, years later, that even if you did sign up under DEP, you can get out of it. Many years ago in the 70s I signed up with the army under the DEP. No one told me if I got cold feet I could back out. I wish I did. Don't get me wrong. I love and respect my country and I was the model soldier. But the number of lies my recruiter told me was shameful. I'd give anything to have those 3 years of my life back. That's why I tell people if they have kids thinking of joining, have them talk with me.

    I got a 90 on my ASVAB and I signed up for 6 years as a Navy nuclear Machinist's Mate with: 2 years of schooling (with 2 1-month breaks in there) and 4 years as an enlisted sailor (2 and a half days of break accumulating monthly and can be used like vacation days).
    I'm currently in the DEP. For most people, I don't think you can get out of DEP, but it can actually be a good thing because you can use that extra time to do what you need to do. For anyone joining the military: study (read - I know it's difficult) and physically prepare for boot camp (for example, sit ups, push ups, and running). It will be worth everything in the long run (haha get it).
    Other than that, I'm so excited to join the Navy and wanted to share this. :)

      After you get out of the Navy apply to get a job with Customs and Border Protection, DEA, FBI, or any other federal agency. You will be making a lot of money but make sure you get a honorable discharge. Also, try to apply for a job in Google, Facebook, Boeing, Lockhead Martin, or Twitter. Yes, that is a trick they're playing to keep you in. At the end of the day you are NOT obligated until you step on the bus to leave for Boot Camp.
      You could take few routes.
      1) Face it heads on, tell them you know they're BSing. Tell them to show you in BLACK AND WHITE paper where YOU MUST go. It doesn't exist.
      2) Ask your parents for some back up. They can lie to you, but sometimes they can't lie to them.
      3) Ask another branch recruiter. Whatever branch you want to join, ask them for some help.

      So its been a week after my ship date and nothing has happened. All I had to do to get out was to tell my recruiter that I no longer wanted to join. I didnt have to sign papers or write a letter to anyone. Anyone with questions can comment under this!
