  • Watch me take the Air Force PT test (and disappoint myself!)! I'm bringing this video to you all after receiving soooo many questions about the test, if it's hard, how to train for it, etc. I hope this answers some of those questions! But if you have more, at least you can ask in the comments and everyone can see there. Hope you enjoy!

FYI, those “chances” you get after failing a PT test come with administrative consequences. Refer to AFI 36-2905. Just letting you all know before you get a false sense of reality. PT tests are serious, and failing multiple times can lead to involuntary administrative separation. Good luck to all of you joining!

Thought I'd answer but someone else more recent might have a better answer.
      I was in 2005.
The first PT test was the first full weekend (end of zero week).
Only thing before basic was getting checked up at MEPS. No pre- PT test.

This is kinda how I passed my final PT test in BMT back in 2008. My friend at the time told me he wasn't going to allow me to fail and he told me to run with him and match his speed the entire time. That man helped me obtain an 11:45 run time which I was never, ever able to pull off again during my tenure as an Airman lol. I'm forever grateful to him.

    • @bjamiork
      @bjamiork 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

You can always prepare physically and make that aspect a bit easier but mentally, that's a bit tougher to train for...as far as how they mentally reshape you from a civilian into a US Airman. It's one of those things you just have to adapt to on the spot. You can do it though, countless women/men through the years have done it and as brutal/scary as it may seem in boot camp, one thing you really learn is that you're capable of more than you ever realized. So never give up.

When I did pt tests, I found it helpful to break up the push-ups and sit-ups into increments of 15. I would figure out how many increments I would need to max, and then just kept track of how many times I counted to 15.

  • @BAD_COMPANYXX

I agree with some of the comments. In order to get a better run time is strength training girl. Work on the legs! Let the legs carry you so you don't get fatigued as fast. Upper body & lower body. At least 3 days a week who know you might end up liking it an ho more than 3 days. My run sucked so bad, an I deadicated my time to Strength training and a lot more improved than just my PT scores. So take it from a fellow airforce sister! It will help.

Did AFROTC a couple years back. We did the PT test twice a semester if I recall correctly. I'd get around a 95 every time and I was pretty average physically. The hardest part is definitely the running. It took about 9 minutes to run the 1.5 mile. We had one guy in our wing who could run the 1.5 literally in 7 minutes. He was pretty much able to sprint the whole thing, I have no idea how he did that. The Air Force had it pretty easy at least compared the Marine guys, they have to run 3 miles. On top of that, they frequently did ruck marches around campus super early in the morning way before we even started our PT, and we did PT at 6:00am 3 times a week. I love the Air Force tho. Although I was impressed with how much rougher and tougher the Marine and Army cadets seemed I really didn't care. I was so proud to be an Airman. I only lasted one semester, I got dropped from the program because I have tattoos on my fingers and neck...😞

But thank you for this....I’m in a training flight right now for the AF Reserves. And we mock test at every drill. But next month is my last one before I ship, and to top it off....I’m overweight for my height. So my ship date could get pushed back. 🙁

Instead of trying to run a set amount of time without stopping try running a certain distance without stopping. You can go slower than your time on your mile and a half but run the whole way and that will still help you improve. I started off not being able to do a mile and a half without stopping but after a month I was able to do it. My score went from 16 minutes to 14 minutes instantly. In my opinion my score still sucks but I know I am improving

That’s why I’m starting now at 16 because I can do.. 0 push ups. My arms are sore from my last arm workout so that’s good. I jogged (and walked for breaks tbh) a mile and it was 17:00 minutes 😭😭 but I haven’t been in shape since I haven’t been taking my usual Aerial classes. Also I’m 174 pounds and 5’11 which might make it harder to run? Idk but I broke my foot back in October and I aint in shape. I got plenty of time tho. Ik I can do the sit ups. Got plenty of time to get stronger.

Back in my day, after reporting to my permanent duty station, I had to cover a 1.5 mile distance in less than 18 minutes once a year. That was too easy. You could almost walk it and still pass. I set a personal goal of doing the 1.5 miles in less than 10 minutes. It took me several months of trying, but I was able to do it. I had to experiment with different strategies. Do I run fast at the beginning or save my energy for a sprint at the end. That was 40 years ago. I know my ticker would not be willing to do that today.

If you wanna get good at running, do sprints. That's what I do to prepare for the PFT. (Marine Corps)

  • @jaychoi-yoshida6040

Hey, how do you improve on your 1.5 mile run? I find it ridiculous that airmen have to run 1.5 miles. Why not just a one mile run? For men, we have to run 1.5 mile in 14 minutes which is not do-able for me. I have been training myself for one month, and still get tired, very winded before I hot the one mile mark. After one mile, I get really really tired and panting and very dizzy.
How did you improve on your situps? I hate situps. I always get muscle cramps, severe pain, after I do 30 situps. The minimum sit ups I have to do as a male in my age bracket is 42. I guess i will not be able to pass tfott. Shit. 😥😥😥😡😡😡

The AF PT test is generally not hard. It’s harder than the Army test but as far as difficulty it is very easy. I am 17 and a AFROTC scholarship recipient and I had to take this test twice. First time I failed because I was not prepared for the sit ups, but after literally 8 days of PT I was able to pass with a 98. Her advice is good. If you really want to excel you need to run 1.5 mi at least 3 times a week as if it’s the real test and really push yourself, the rest of the time you can walk or jog or bike. Do 20 push-ups and sit-ups when you wake up and before you go to sleep, and every other day or everyday if you want you can push to your max in a mock 1 minute test... also drink lots of water and Gatorade before testing it makes a difference. You can also put liniment on your chest and joints.

PT really easy. Honor Graduate. Testing? 98%. Just tough it out, and be smart in testing. Everyone doesn't make it, over all services. I knew I was more than qualified, for any service. At 25. You really have to get yourself physically and mentally ready. I come from a military family. All kinds of advice. Never volunteer. Live out of your laundry bag. Have your bed made, before reveille. Never use your toothpaste. Just suck it out of the tube. A partial list. I was 200# when I went in. 175 when I came out. 33 years later, I am only 224. Not too bad for a 6' guy. Go practice shooting for sure. Any Pistol and rifles, or assault rifles. Accuracy. Take your time. I grew up as a hunter a hunter, a later a policeman before joining. 37 out 40 with an M-16. With a .38?(required in my day for overseas)100% rating. I prefer a .45. I never miss with a pistol. Short range. I am glad you passed. There are guys that don't. I had five washbacks in my flight. I helped all of them pass. Helped them making beds, squaring away their lockers, marching, teaching the guide, the USAF song, and helped their attitude. All of them didn't know if they could make it through again. I told all five them, we are going to be an Honor Flight. Guess what. All of them passed. We also made it to honor flight. Beating our sister flight. We had a woman as well for a T.I. She saw I was good asset. Day one. She screamed in my face the night I arrived. I expressed no emotion at all. I had learned military bearing, as a kid. I only came out the same door, I came in. For chow. She came after me, in a minute. I was first out. She was in my face. She didn't expect my reaction at all. 🤣😂🤣😂 Intimidating me, with words, is impossible.

You're slacking off, and not running as often as you need to.
If you run 2 miles a day, three days per week, you will do much better during the PT test.
You need to do push ups more often, during the week, so that you can perform better during PT test.
The base gym has plenty of Weight Machines that you can use, to become stronger at push ups.
    Push yourself.

When I was on active duty, we tested once a year. At Grand Forks AFB, ND, we tested immediately after the Spring Thaw, so there was no time to train for it. You could go to the base gym and run around the basketball court 36 times. At least I was still young at the time and could afford to kill myself once a year.
In the Navy Reserve it changed to twice a year with the toe touch, pushups, situps, and the run. The petty officer in charge started us out and he redefined the toe touch as touching your toes with your wrist, which I could do at the time. The Legalman next to me started to freak out that she couldn't do that and was going to fail. Then she saw me touching my toes with my wrists and she really started to panic. She passed.
