    Ady does such a good job of not only explaining how the system works but also why he's doing it the way he is, which reflects the thought and care that's gone into this build. Your vlogs are really outstanding and the humour from you two, well, that's just a huge bonus. 👍 Steve

      @@matthewmaddox8582 That's okay Matthew. My take on this is that if the hot was below the cold, then the rising heat from the hot pipe would make the cold pipe condense and that would drip all over the floor. Less chance of that happening with the hot above the cold. Happy to be corrected if someone knows better.

    Hello Nanny and Grandad. The build is coming along great since our visit (Claire is still watching cat videos instead of yours though!) I couldn't see a non return valve in the cold water feed. Without this the hot water in your calorifier will blend back into your cold water feed and water tank and so the pressure will drop and the pump regularly cycle. I'm not sure that SureCal supply one with every calorifier but every calorifier needs one! Ours failed a little while back and it took me a while to figure out why our pump kept waking me up in the middle of the night!

    • @vonasi2
      @vonasi2 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@makinganarrowboatwithnannyandg We are getting close on the builder but boat builders are busy people and don't do communication very well so it is hardwork. Steel prices have also made us a bit hesitant but have now stabilised.... at a very high price. Our shell is now 50% higher in price than when we first started getting quotes!

    • @vonasi2
      @vonasi2 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just had a quick look on the SureCal website and it appears that they do supply a NRV valve with the 55litre vertical calorifier and it looks like it is part of the cold feed connection/barb so you should be good to go. In fact it looks like there is also one in the cold water feed connection to the blend valve.

    For some reason we seldom see the use of collet clips on these JG pipe fittings, red and blue circlips which prevent the fitting from being pulled off easily. They also help ID hot and cold when the system is not running. Dead cheap too.

    Another great video. Just one comment though.
    Personally I wouldn't have varnished the inner side of those ply panels, especially as you've painted the other side it would seal in any damp that might, however unlikely, get in. I think that it's better to treat the Hull side with wood preserver, that would still prevent rot but it allow the timber to breathe. It might be worth you thinking about. Regarding those plastic pipes can't say that I like all those flow restricting right angle bends. They must use up a lot of energy.

    • @makinganarrowboatwithnannyandg
      @makinganarrowboatwithnannyandg  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers Tony, Ok thats interesting. We were advised at the beginning of our build to seal all our wood both sides and to use Varnish on the reverse to stop damp getting in so thats what we have been doing. What you say makes sense as we have talked about it many times to each other about should we be letting the wood breath a little. Think we will look into a wood preserver for the rest. 👍

    Great video thank you! One question regarding your explanation on having stainless steel coils… you mentioned the heat generated from the ‘parking heater’ would be too hot for copper so if one didn’t have a “parking heater” (Webasto/Eberspacher) and used the diesel engine to warm up the stored water, surely the same if not more heat would come from say a Beta marine 43hp engine. The tank is copper, the stainless steel coil meets cold water in the calorifier, the hot water transfer travels through a rubber hose to the cold water not sure stainless steel coils are necessary. What do you think?

    • @makinganarrowboatwithnannyandg
      @makinganarrowboatwithnannyandg  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Cheers David. For me it was more to do with corrosion. A stainless steel coil , although the chances are slim, has less chance of failing.

    Great vlog, very well presented and explained. I have a new boat. Looking through the plumbing, I have no expansion tank. Should I be worried ?

    • @makinganarrowboatwithnannyandg
      @makinganarrowboatwithnannyandg  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Cheers Norman. Some people say modern day pumps don't need an accumulator ( white vessel next to our cold water tank under the bed ) to stop the pump cycling but we fitted one as belt and braces. As for the expansion tank not sure if you mean the header tank high up in the calorifier cupboard or the silver expansion vessel next to the calorifier. If it's the plastic tank at high level I would say definitely. If it's the silver vessel next to the calorifier i would say yes also as it will help to absorb any expansion when the water is heated in the calorifier. I think it recommends an expansion on the hot side of the calorifier in the installation instructions for the calorifier but haven't got them to hand or I would check for you. Hope this helps. 👍

    • @normanjones1640
      @normanjones1640 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @makinganarrowboatwithnannyandg thanks for reply. Yes i have an accumulator by the cold tank. I also have header tank for central heating, but no expansion tank by calorifier as you fitted, just an expansion pipe which exits out the side of the boat. I am having one fitted but think boat buolder should have fitted it. Assume it wont effect BSC test .

      @@normanjones1640 I'm not sure why they haven't fitted one I think it's good practice to fit one. It won't effect your BSS.

  • @MultiOutdoorman

    Its a pressure-relief valve. Not temperature, as on unvented domestic cylinders.
    As water is heated it expands but is not compressible, unlike air.
    If water boils and turns to steam it expands by 1600 times its volume .
    Scary stuff.
    On domestic setups there will be a vertical (open to atmosphere) discharge pipe via a tundish.
    This allows visual indication of a problem, as well as an escape route.
    Important to also have an expansion vessel rated at about 10 percent of system capacity.
    Otherwise you will be constantly discharging hot water and the pump would be continually cycling. Gigger volume is better,
    The cold side has an accumulator after your pump ..

  • @normmcrae1140
    @normmcrae1140 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    There is a technical term for your Expansion tank - in Hydraulic terms - it's called an Accumulator. If you're an electrical type - it's similar in principle for a fluid to a capacitor's usage in an electronic circuit. It very much evens out the pulses of the pump, while storing a small amount of pressure charge.

    • @vonasi2
      @vonasi2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@makinganarrowboatwithnannyandg Those tanks are used in two ways. One is as an accumulator and you set the air pressure to just below the pump cut out pressure so that it becomes a store of water under pressure that stops the pump instantly cutting in when a tap is opened. The other use is as an expansion vessel where you set the air pressure at just above the pump cut out pressure and it allows the hot water in the calorifier and hot water circuit to expand without increasing water pressure and splitting your calorifier open. Don't ask me how I know! Good to see the build progressing so well.
