  • This interview comes from the mysterious KISS black box. Apparently, these black boxes were sent to radio stations with pre-recorded answers to questions so the radio station could appear to be interviewing KISS. I cut out the dead air and cleaned up the audio the best I could. Enjoy!

Ace gained confidence after recording his solo album. Rightly so. It’s not only the very best of the four, it still holds up today. Every track is fantastic. Solid.

Agreed. I think “Shock Me” opened the door a crack and his solo album threw it wide open.

It's an amazing guitar record. Ace Frehley made great guitar solos that match the Kiss songs perfectly.
My favorite is his solo for Calling Dr Love.

I thought Peter Criss solo was the best. Ace was second. Then Paul.

Ace's album should be somewhere on the top 100 rock albums of all time list and if you're a guitar player it should be in your library.

I love Ace. He’s been my idol since 1976 or so and the reason I started playing guitar, but I have to say that listening to this interview makes me a bit sad. I can really tell he was a lot more together, articulate and well spoken back then before decades of substance abuse took it’s toll. Imagine what he may have accomplished if he’d been able to keep those demons at bay. That being said, I’m nonetheless extremely thankful that he’s now sober and happy and still with us today.

Paul Daniel Frehley, más conocido como Ace Frehley (n. Nueva York, Estados Unidos, 27 de abril de 1951), es un músico estadounidense célebre por haber sido el guitarrista y uno de los fundadores del grupo Kiss.

@David Rodriguez I think one of the biggest rock disappointments of all time was the fact that Ace & Peter were never on the lick it up cover showing their ugly mugs they earnt that privilege. the wow factor would have been off its head...

In fairness to Gene, he jokes about it himself, and still married a playmate, and fathered a beautiful daughter, who also seems like a kind person. In Kiss, you had four very flawed people, whose strengths covered each other's weaknesses. Paul and Gene get alot of hate, because their flaws have do with being not such nice people. It doesn't change that Ace and Peter were both irresponsible addicts, and had some irritating behaviors. Truly though, I'm sorry they didn't do something post-Kiss together -- could have made a killer trio, with the right bassist -- or a bigger band, with perhaps Peter out front as lead singer. His voice with Ace's guitar is rock and roll gold.

    • @garyhill2740
      @garyhill2740 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@brianshaffneraclc Gene and Paul come across to many fans as being a little jealous of Ace and Peter. Especially Ace. Ace is, after all, the only one of the original four to have any success outside of Kiss to speak of. Even his 1978 solo, while released under the Kiss "brand", had nothing to do with Gene and Paul, while being the most successful of the solo albums and a perennial fan favorite.
Ace takes attention away from them, and it burns them that he doesn't really need them or Kiss to make great music. They, on the other hand, have accomplished little outside of Kiss of any consequence.
Even as Kiss, the quality and relevance of their output dropped off dramatically after Lick It Up and never really recovered.
So they subject us to these ongoing monologues knocking Ace for things that happened eons ago. Past. Done. Get over it.
But it's how they justify their resentment, and hide the fact that the real reason they can't work with Ace is because they are incapable of treating him as an equal creatively and financially when they work together.
Ace would love to work with Kiss one last time. But not being treated as an underling, and not being paid like a second string sideman.
After what happened with Psycho Circus, who would blame him?
But no, they can't work with Ace because alcohol...blah blah blah....unreliable....blah blah....
Whatever. Ace has had his act together recording and touring for well over a decade. Over thirteen years, really.
They don't want to share the spotlight or the money.
You know what? Who cares. If he keeps making albums like Spaceman, Anomaly, and Space Invader....I couldn't care less if he ever worked with Kiss again.
Let Gene and Paul ride that lightning bolt logo right into the ground lip synching live to the oldies.
      Rock on Ace!

Ace’s technique might have gradually deteriorated from this point, but there’s no question he was a real intuitive and creative musician. It frustrates me sometimes that Ace is compared unfavorably to the replacement guitarists of Kiss. It’s the wrong comparison to make. Ace’s contemporaries in the NY scene were the likes of Johnny Thunders, Johnny Ramone, etc. Ace did a hell of a lot more with the tools he had at his disposal, and most importantly, he wrote great songs and many memorable riffs/solos within Kiss.

I don't know if that is true for the reason for the Solo Albums. I have heard that the Solo Albums were conceived back in '76, in fact Ace says in another interview that because he knew the Solo albums were coming that he hid songs from Paul and Gene so he could use them on his Solo album. So many KISS stories, who knows what to believe.

Radio dub. Local or syndicated DJ records the questions in their own voice, drops in the replies. Makes it sound like they are interviewing Ace personally.
Also a good way for band management to control what is said.

Just as Gary said this was a way for artists to not have to step foot in a radio station especially if they are busy on tour. With this "interview" you could "interview" each member with pre written questions to ask and then use their recorded answered without actually meeting them. Sort of them being in the studio without them being in the studio. This is done a lot with tv interviews, especially the infamous "kiss farewell tour" interview from vh1 where other news outlets used that same footage fir their Q and A with Kiss.
