      Self appointed critics always sneer and deride anything they personally don't like or understand. Beethoven had his critics too. I'll bet nobody can name three of them.

    This 20/20 show in '79 was the epicentre of KISS awesomeness for me as a 15 year old. I had just seen the Dynasty show in Toronto and knew that album word-for-word. It was the pinnacle of a fantastic summer before I had to meet life's grown-up realities. I watched it on an ancient 18" b/w analog TV with a 13-channel dial selector that made a clicking sound when you changed stations, no cable in those days. Just a rotor and antenna, a wonderful time in Kisstory.

    "Paganism for pubescents?" Not surprising such a clueless comment came from a Rolling Stone writer. As someone who grew up in the '70s, I was a huge KISS fan. And though I loved "Dynasty," I lamented its "Super KISS" look and that the band's sudden appeal to kids and families. Nothing wrong in seeking new fans, but they just lost something at that point, IMO. Thanks for posting this!

    According to a Gallup poll Kiss was the most popular rock band in America in 1977 ......by late 1978 most of the fans who followed them since '74 had checked out and had moved on to other bands.....especially after the solo albums came out. By 1979 the median age of a Kiss fan was 12.....whereas just 4 years prior most Kiss fans were between the ages of 15-25. What a difference a couple of years make......by 1980 they couldn't fill an American stadium anymore......by 1981 they were almost completely washed up. Then starting in late '82 they slowly began to climb back in popularity but would never come close to their hey day which was late '75 through early '78.

      Glickman and Howard Marks were let go in 1988. Bill Aucoin was let go earlier, in 1982 when The Elder tanked.
      The shit hit the fan in 1987 when they owed millions in back taxes. The Cincinnati property was sold, as well as their song catalog to pay their tax bill.

    Just my opinion, KISS was a great band from 1974 to 1978. These are the albums that are official in my opinion.
    1. Kiss
    2. Hotter than Hell
    3. Dressed to Kill
    4. Rock and Roll Over
    5. Alive
    6. Destroyer
    7. Love Gun
    8. Ace Frehley - Kiss Solo Album
    They can make one 'best of' album with tracks from Dynasty, Unmasked and the 3 other solo albums to cover 1978 to 1980. I really like 1981's The Elder but it's not a KISS album. After 1980, KISS really doesn't exist anymore. They are just another forgettable 80's hair band after 1981. KISS only in name.

    • @digi_edits
      @digi_edits 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They had a relatively great success in the 80s thanks to Eric Carr with albums like Creatures of the Night and Lick it Up. But yeah nothing compares to the 70's Kiss' best era.

    And two years after this, KISS couldn't get arrested. They were so unpopular, if you said you liked KISS, you were laughed at and ridiculed. Most people thought they weren't even together at that point anymore. The only media they could get was the occasional mention in 16 magazine. So high to so low in such a short time was spectacular.
