    Hey guys, in this video I go over the Jurassic Park 2 that we never got to see which happens to be the sequel Steven Spielberg originally had in mind in the 90's. It all revolved around that buried Barbasol can that we saw on Isla Nublar with Dennis Nedry in the original film. Eventually the director would TRY to bring this stuff back for the plot of Jurassic Park 4 in the mid 2000's but it never really went down the way he wanted it to. Maybe we will see some sort of tribute to it in Jurassic World 3 when that comes out? I doubt it but you never know! Hope you all enjoy! :D

    Personally, I never saw that shot of the Barbasol can getting covered in mud as something that needed to be revisited in a sequel, but as the official conclusion of that storyline. Given that the embryos were only viable for 36 hours, watching the can get buried in the mud signified it was gone forever -- it would never get to the guy on the boat or into Dodgson's hands. The way I always saw it was that camera shot was done to let us know Nedry and those embryos died together.

    • @gabrieladerre2862
      @gabrieladerre2862 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      That's exactly what I thought too! I haven't seen the movie in years. And it's been over a year since I did my third read through of the book. However, I was certain that the embryos only had a short shelf life. So the sequel that he was speaking of would almost have to happen in a time frame that would start shortly after the survivors escaped in the helicopter. If not sooner! Although I'm sure that they could have invented some way for DNA to be retrieved from the samples, after they "died." Its not as if the science of the series is completely realistic anyhow. If its realistic at all!

    • @YURangers
      @YURangers 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Exactly! Dodgson says 36 hours, after that they’re worthless. This makes the JP game having the backup plan to retrieve the can if Nedry failed makes the most sense.
      A sequel would have to either begin immediately after the original movie, or at least contain a prologue or flashback to the can being retrieved within that time frame.

    • @tope1983
      @tope1983 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Same here.
      The embryos were literally buried.
      It would have been much more likely to retrieve embryos from the cold storage in the visitor center. Of course only if Lex reboot of the park's os also put the cooling back on.

      In the film they managed to extract dino DNA from hundred million year old amber, with that logic they should be able to extract DNA from the dead embrios easily.

      Though a cool idea... Like what if Robert Muldoon wasnt killed by the Raptors.... I think they can easily write around the can and the timer. Start the movie as a flashback set in 1996. Biosym agents found Nedry's jeep and found the can within the 36 hour mark. Now, with Dinos running around. Biosym can now cause an issue and be a villain in the next series.

    When I was a kid I remember thinking that the Chaos Effect dinos were partially from that can. And while the embryos themselves died there was still DNA in it. But since it had been shaken up so much there was mixing of the DNA and when they actually cloned the animals they ended up unintentional hybrids. I don't know if that was actually FROM somewhere or if if it was just me and my pals making things up. But it is a scenario that is pretty solid in my head.

    I could see them having a flashback in JW3 where the dockworker finds a dead Nedry and stumbles on the Barbosol can. Forward 25 years later and that company had mild success in reverse engineering Wu's work for a foreign company wanting to militarize dinosaurs.

    Funny thing about the can: spielberg and a lot of people say tehy felt the can being covered in mud and such was a hint towards it coming back in the future.
    To me even as a kid it felt like a bit of finality to the end of that plotthread.
    We are told the can had enough cold air to keep the embryos safe for 48 hours.
    But now rather than just being in a jeep not far from a main roade and easily found, it gets buried in mud.
    "But its not even that far from the jeep!" I hear you say.
    To that i say- the can could have literally gone Anywhere. Most people when looking for it wouldnt be likely to check in that specific spot. So its not likely itd be found- at least not within the time limit.
    So if the can were ever found- its unlikely whatever was left in the can would be much worth recovering (then again faux dna recovery science in jurassic park so maybe they still would be able to? Idk)
    Combined with it being unlikely people would willingly go to that very dangerous island i never felt it was sequel baiting, but rather showing to the audience that the cans story is over. Nobody is going to go searching for it- or if they do, they wont ever find it

    I'm glad they never brought that into fruition because I quite liked the scene of the can being buried by the mud. I always interpreted that idea as something's should remain buried and undiscovered. Not to mention yes those specimens would be unviable unless retrieved before the 36hrs. Which would have made for one messy retcon.

    I see it like this:
    We don't truly know if that barbasol can was ever found or not, we only know what the movies have told us so far (if you ignore behind the scenes information and director commentaries/interviews). So who's to say there was never a recon team that went to the island to find Ned? No one aside from the viewers know Ned is dead, or that the can is missing. Do you really think Ned not showing up at the docks wouldn't have sparked some kind of search for him and the capsules he stole? He already had a buyer that clearly has deep pockets, so there's no reason they can't do a sort of "spin-off" like the Tell Tale game, except make it interesting with good characters. Also give it a 90's feel and it'll put butts in seats especially since the 90's are making a rather large come back these days.
    In short, the dino DNA is worth so much money I can't see any movie bad guy would just "call it a loss" and NOT go after Ned, or answers. Unless I'm missing something or forgot a mention of the canister in one of the sequels?

    The time in which the shaving cream can would be relevant and viable was slim. It's even stated in the meeting when he hands him it, the time limit he had to get it where they could more properly store it. So maybe a similar corporate operation, or going back to around that moment the can is lost.

    The problem with the Can of Barbasol is that it only had enough coolant for 36 hours. If it wasn't grabbed within a day and a half? Embryos are dead, and is iffy whether or not you could extract any useful dna from them.

  • @dewrygwyllgi2636
    @dewrygwyllgi2636 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I always thought if they were to use the can from the first film and use it for a movie set years later would be the opening sequence would have been right after Nedry's death where the can would be found and the labs at the visitor center raided then after the title sequence you see that it's years later.

  • @marrob6995
    @marrob6995 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    ingen didn't have any interest to recover the barbassol, because they don't know what nedry had done because he bring his secrets in the dinosaur stomach. So, no one know what happen to him. Also, ingen had much more embryos in the lab and even more on site b and thoses embryos were not needed. But the idea is pretty cool, because biosyn would had try something to recover this expansive can. However, in the books and until jurassic world come, probably, isla Nublar was heavely napalmed by us airforce after the incident. So the can was probably considered by biosyn like lost or incinerated. So, this why they did not send someone to recover it.

    The agent finds the Barabasol can after an encounter with a diloposaurus.
    Flash forward to modern day.

    Klayton seriously, you're shitposting now. Can you just take a break whilst there's nothing to make content about? How many times have you made a video about this specific topic? How many times have you talked about THIS TOPIC in other unrelated videos?
    Welp. Your videos were fun while it lasted. I'll see you again when your content gets better, hopefully.

    Okay, I already didn't like Joe Johnston for the crap job he did with JP3, and that snipe about Spielberg's work and reputation just further solidifies my dislike of the man. Seriously? The guy is so high on himself in that quote that it's mind blowing he ever got to direct a Jurassic Park film. Steven probably gave him the director's chair for JP3 just to shut him up. The only Johnston directed film I like is Jumanji. Johnston never belonged on a Jurassic Park film project. JP3 is more than proof enough of that.

    It can be revived. JW3 could have a storyline about how Nedry wasn't the only Ingen employee bought by Dodgson on behalf of Biosyn. The bought employee retrieves the can between JP and TLW: JP.

    Dodgson says in Jurassic Park that the Barbasol can has enough coolant for only 36 hours otherwise the embryos expire. Yet everyone (including Spielberg?!) thinks that can is still sitting around waiting to produce dinosaurs... Did I miss something?

    I think the second one was a good concept, and I would have loved to see it. But how could they EXACTLY find it? It would possibly rain again, a dinosaur could walk over and destroy it, you get my point? I am not saying the movie would be bad, I am only being a dick and thinking Jurassic Park should be realistic. Wonderful video, keep it up!

    Was'nt there supposed to be a scene in Jurassic World that would of showed tresspassers go on Nublar (after 1993) to steal collectables and that Lowery's Jurassic Park t-shirt was bought from that... or something

    In class we're actually writing books and im trying to turn Spielberg's idea into a book. I loved the idea of retrieving the can of DNA. I hope it goes well! I'm already making a part where 4 hunters get sent to the island because INGEN offered them a bunch of money. Opening scene of the book right now is the 4 Hunters in a conference with INGEN. I've been planning this one scene where their exploring the visitors center and a T-Rex breaks through the ceiling. I'm trying to make it fit the JP series as good as possible. Wish me luck!

  • @umbropolis
    @umbropolis 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    In fact, JP3 should have been JWFK: it would start in a flashback, with a team like that in Jurassic Park: The Game retrieving the barbasol can. Time leap, and we would have dinosaurs breaking from a clandestine Biosyn facility and spreading across the continent, and then a crisis begins.

  • @brianlevine871
    @brianlevine871 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not counting the Telltale video game, I could probably see a short film work around the idea of retrieving the can. Although, the only scenario I can think of would be similar to the beginning of "Fallen Kingdom," where some people from BioSyn would find the can while evading Dilophosaurs.

  • @fb6aaron737
    @fb6aaron737 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I still wish we could get a mini series on the cleanup of Nublar in 1994, which could easily cover finding the Barbasol can since they discover Nedry's body according to DPG site. Even if the series was only like 6-hour long episodes like the Kenobi series is on Disney+.

  • @loveminus0

    I'm not sure why you would need closure, Dodgson clearly says in JP that the canister could only protect the embryos for 36hrs. By the time the first film is over more than half that time has already passed. The embryos didn't survive the weekend. A way more frustrating loose end for any sequel is Dodgson himself and BioSyn. Scientific espionage and the rivalry between InGen and BioSyn would have made such a great sequel, but it was barely ever mentioned again.

    YES!! That can of shaving cream is actually bigger than what it seems. DINO DNA! You could easily start of JW 3 with a flash back to maybe some foreign government sending a team in to retract it, successfully find it, with some good dino attack on this team, then, flash forward to the current time, and take it from there. That's an idea I could see done.

    They should have went with Spielberg`s original plan with the Barbasol Can. It would have been very interesting and much more fun and entertaining than Crichton`s novel story of the Lost world. It could have been a worthy sequel to the original Jurassic Park and a set up to future sequels like Jurassic Park 3 that show continuity !

  • @leodefine86
    @leodefine86 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    In 1993 it was very obvious that the scene of the Barbasol can suggested that a sequel would be developed from there. Thinking about it that can couldn’t refrigerate the embryos for longer than a few days so the sequel should take place almost immediately after the evacuation of the island. That being said, it would be much more realistic if ByoSyn had sent troops to the island to capture the remaining dinosaurs and the embryos stored in the refrigerated room. Nobody could ever guess where that Barbasol can could be. So i think the most likely scenario would be very close to the Jurassic Park 2 - The Chaos Continues, the game released for the SNES in 1995.

  • @nebulous6660
    @nebulous6660 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would suggest Dodgson sends a team in exploiting the small window of opportunity while the island is being evacuated to try and retrieve as much as they can and search for Nedry. It would be a great opportunity to revisit the aftermath of the original movie and show things that we didn't get to see and possibly fill in some plot holes while adding to the mythos like Rogue One did. Dodgson would have to be recast of course since the actor is in prison for child molestation.

    Would love them to make an official Jurassic park 2. A movie that takes place between JP1 and LWJP. Include elements from the semi canonical video game..it would be pretty cool!
    Never too late for it, if you think about it. Star Wars does it lol. Or another route they can go Is have be revealed that someone had found the can in a future sequel before the events of FK. if done right they could incorporate it in the next JW movie. Idk

    Didn't Dodgson say during his lunch conversation with Nedry the Barbasol can only lasts like 48 hours once used? Why would Spielberg want to go back to this story thread if the embryos would be basically dead if they went to retrive the can? Yes I'm aware of the TellTale JP game too I've seen how it ends anyway on TH-cam for what its worth.

    This is one of those things that makes me wish film studios and writers were more willing to try a separate canon direction. I mean, It's totally fine to just pretend everything after JP1 or JP2/3 isn't canon, and do a new sequel. I mean it's nice having a lot of stuff in one world, but comics have been doing it for decades and decades. It allows you to focus on a specific kind of story. I dunno, just my thoughts.

  • @ravenandstar
    @ravenandstar 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah I always hated that opened plot thread, it was like super important. Than it was gone. But if I brought it back, I'd have it as a plotline in JW3. Like a country that brought dinosaur X, wants to create their own heard about Nedry plan. They go to the island, find the can deeply buried in mud and ash. They take and try to clone dinosaurs off it, but sort of fail to make good one's because the DNA has gotten too old.

  • @jurassickaiju14

    But that cryo-can only had enough coolant for thirty-six hours. Even if BioSyn or InGen or whoever wanted it did manage to recover it, they would be probably be non-viable by the time they actually mounted a mission to Isla Nublar.

    The makers can always create an opening scene with the shaving cream can being retrieved in a flash back. It's really odd Dobson would only rely on a clown like Dennis Nedry without any kind of back-up. Dobson died in the Jurassic Park 2 book, so maybe he can still die in a future movie?

    I'm 34 right now but I remember back when I was in fourth grade, I used all of my time in the computer lab writing a sequel to Jurassic Park. The original was the first novel I had ever read and I loved the movie. I can't remember anything from it except that the prologue was about a rival genetics company sending mercenaries to the island and finding the can.

  • @DiamondDead
    @DiamondDead 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    They said in JP1 that the coolant inside the Barbasol can lasts for 36 hours, so the DNA would be long destroyed considering the tropical heat and that it would take days for anybody to recover it. So sadly a sequel based on this premise would be nonsensical since even if they found the can - the dino DNA would be unusable.

    There is no problem with 10 or 25 years passing. After all we wouldn't know if there was a secret collecting mission, and well, those were embryos at most, so, you need some years to turn that into adults,this is no Jurassic World Evolution, you need lots of research and development to make another interesting film with fully grown dinosaurs.

    I wish the Jurassic park and lost world films had followed the books by Michael Crichton, they would have been some awesome films, especially with how some of the people and dinosaurs died. I think the bit were Alan Grant poisons the raptors would have looked ace on the big screen, and the t-rex chasing the raft down the river

  • @craignottingham9889

    I really wish that after Gray and Zach climb out of the pool in JW, they had found the barbasol can in the mud. We know the embryos wouldn’t have been any good after 36 hours so this would have been perfect closure for me and tie in with all the nostalgia of that part of the movie. Every time I watch that scene I think it would work. They grab it from the mud and they drag themselves through it, ook at it, maybe even open it or just toss it aside as junk.

  • @steal_your_soul
    @steal_your_soul 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    if Johnston was highly interested from the start (right after JP 1)... why the hell didn't he create a story around the lost barbasol can for JP 3? That would've been a 1000 times better than the shitty thing they called a 'scenario' we got now :)

  • @lolbroklol
    @lolbroklol 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I honestly always thought that they showed the Barbasol can being covered by mud because they were 'returning to the Earth', as if they didn't belong in our time or something. Mud slides and processes like that are partially responsible for fossilization in the first place, so I figured it fit.
