The James Cameron Jurassic Park Movie We Never Got To See

  • James Cameron almost made Jurassic Park in the 90’s but the story behind what movie that would’ve been isn’t that expansive. The director says that he would’ve made a nastier movie like what he did with Aliens. In this video I go over his work as well as the book, Stan Winston and ILM before speculating on how the film would’ve turned out.

@Jake Folk nobody is saying it isn’t, it is a cinematic masterpiece and my all time favorite film, but while it had a couple horror elements it was more a action/adventure movie than anything. Cameron’s version would have likely been aimed for more of a mature audience with more violence and a darker theme while following the book more closely.

    • @peterstoric6560
      @peterstoric6560 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@Jake Folk you do realize that most of his movies use guns are have have strong white men, like his newest movie. And most older movies aren’t scary by today’s standards, especially when considering his movies were more action horror rather than straight horror. It’s up to you on what you want to watch, but you can’t deny that James Cameron is a great director. Hell, name another director that has 3 movies that made over 2 billion

Honestly I'd like to see a more closely adaption of the original novel made into a movie. R rated, all the species from the book, and with updated info we have on those species would be awesome. Back in the 90s sure it wouldn't have made enough money to justify and would've been exceedingly more expensive. But nowadays I feel it would make more than enough money to make sense, the technology has come a long way and it's way more readily available. I know it probably will never happen considering you'd probably have to recast everyone but idk I want a rated r jurassic park movie and I feel a true adaption to the book is probably the only way that happens.

If Steven Spielberg missed his window to direct Jurassic park and make cinema history, the very best alternative would have been James Cameron. I can see him really pushing the boundaries of both CGI with ILM and Stan Winston's animatronics to make the scariest T. rexes and Raptors imaginable. I think he would have been more faithful to the book with John Hammond as a greedy businessman for example. It would have even been more expensive than the Spielberg film while being an adults-only experience.
At the same time, the amount of heart Spielberg put into the re-invented John Hammond, heck the rest of the cast are so memorably cast, and the sheer awe and majesty of John Williams' music resulted in a film that hit the audience sweet spot. Those who watched it as kids are now grown ups and have passed on the Spielberg film onto a new generation. It's possible that problems of the post-Spielberg films could have been dodged if Cameron led the franchise in the first place, but for good or for bad the appeal to children seems to have been a bigger component in the longevity of the franchise we realise.

In my opinion, Jurassic Park always worked better as a horror. The Lost World had the best atmosphere out of the series, really portraying the dinosaurs as dangerous. my favorite scene was when Eddie and Kelly were in the High Hide, and they watched the Tyrannosaur parents shaking the trees as they passed under. even from way up there, I still felt the danger of these powerful animals.
If you watch TheDinoFax, you know that you don't have to exaggerate how dangerous a dinosaur was to have a horror movie. they were already very dangerous to begin with. which is why the Jurassic series works best as a horror.

First off, dinosaurs are not just for eight year olds, they should be enjoyed by everyone.
I believe that an 80/90's Cameron would have made a great director for a Jurassic Park movie even if he doesn't believe it himself and honestly, I think his version could have been been made on the same budget or possibly a little cheaper. I say this because before directing, he came from the Art department and because he knows his props, he could have saved money on production using puppets and forced perspectives rather than CGI. But if you could imagine replacing the xenomorphs (Aliens) with the raptors, I would have love to see that carnage. God now I want a R Cameron JP....
Sidebar, I don't think Schwarzenegger would've been Grant, Muldoon yes. Trying to stick as close to the source material as possible, the story would have played out where Muldoon is saving the group and he would've survived. just like the book.

Off topics from the video but based on what James Cameron said about how he would’ve done JP, I feel like he should’ve made the American Godzilla movie that became the 98 film.
His idea for JP almost sounds like it would’ve been more of what audiences wanted from a Godzilla movie at the time while keeping with the artistic liberties.
Having the movie be aliens with Dinos kinda sounds like if G98 was an A+ film and not just average.
It could’ve been like Aliens with the Colonial marines being replaced by the military. Things like the baby-Godzillas being like the drones in aliens. With NYC becoming like the colony from aliens after Godzilla’s landfall, I think that would’ve made for a much better second half of the film.
With James Cameron’s emphasis on science and special effects it would’ve kept the plot more grounded than the final film.
I’m not someone who dislikes G98 but if that movie was more like Aliens it could’ve been a lot better and up there with some of the best Godzilla films

He had the right heart for it IMO- he's a big fan of Ray Harryhausen's work, he's repeatedly expressed a sense of empathy for the creatures of cinema, and dinosaurs/pterosaurs make several cameos in his other films. I imagine Burton would have treated the dinosaurs with a sense of love I think a lot of the other listed directors wouldn't have. And while I agree with Cameron that Spielberg was ultimately the best choice, I still would have liked to see the other directors' interpretations too.

Jurassic Park is pretty much a perfect movie. But as someone who read tye books and because James Cameron is my favourite director and I know his style, I'd go out of my way to see a James Cameron version of Jurassic Park. I can say it wouldn't be as successful as Spielberg, but I'd probably like it more than the original JP. And JP is in my top ten favourite films.

I love jp and wouldn't change it for the world even now as an adult, and saw it as a kid when it came out in the cinema, one of my best ever memories, getting the toys at Xmas etc.
But....now as an adult I would also love what your talking about James Cameron doing, maybe he still can do it, I know everyone is sick of remakes of awesome films, but darker much nastier version almost direct from the book would be something I'd love to see, and a second film to go with the second book and that could be it for me. (also the lost world that we have I would never want replaced either, such an epic follow up, which isn't always found nowadays).
Sorry if what I wrote doesn't make sense, my mind goes quicker then my typing and I have loads of thoughts on things.
Thank you for the cool video, I never knew that about Tim Burton either, and Arnie 👍😁

I'm a huge fan of James Cameron and his sci-fi storytelling, but I have to say I'm really pleased that he didn't make JP
The JP we have is core to me from being a child, and its family appeal is undoubtedly what makes JP such a favourite and replayable movie.
It has just the right amount of humour, horror and adventure.
*However* I would very much go for an independent James Cameron/Tim Burton dinosaur movie now.

I love the movie we got - but, having also read the book, I am still longing for a real horror\scary movie with dinosaurs. "Carnosaur 2" is the closest we ever got so far in terms of "Aliens with dinosaurs"...and, while it has that strange charm only STV low-budget flicks from the late-80s\early-90s have, it's far from being an optimal experience.

It does upset me a little bit about the stereotype of dinosaurs being a kid's thing. Steven Spielberg was the right choice for Jurassic Park, but I would like to see a dinosaur film or documentary made by James Cameron. Seeing what he created with Avatar and the overall beauty of the world of Pandora, I would love to that same creativity in portraying dinosaurs and the Mesozoic environments.

I'd argue that by the late eighties Spielberg's career was in the doldrums; he'd had a few movies that hadn't done as well - such as 'Always' with Richard Dreyfus, he'd begun to worry his glory days were a part of the eighties and apparently at the time wasn't being offered to direct much.
I find it inspiring that instead he bought the rights to Creightons novel, based solely on the pitch and the popularity of the writer, apparently whilst he was still writing it, and would then direct it himself rather than waiting for the studio to offer him something.

I thank the gods that James Cameron never made Jurassic Park. As with his other movies, Cameron would have made a movie that he would have wowed the audience upon its initial release and then sloped off drastically afterwards. Cameron blows audiences away with his visuals while his writing turns every character into a cardboard cutout. Satler would also have been made into the main character with a lot of macho dialogue thrown into the mix.

I'd love to see a re-boot from Cameron now. R Ratings don't really matter as much now days as they did back then. I always felt the whole jurassic park franchise would have been better if it was a little "darker" with a bit more horror mixed in.

I love Arnold and have watched most of James Cameron's movies. As an adult, I would like to see a story more similar to the book, but I'm unsure if there would've been more than 2 movies made. I rank the movies 1 2 4 6 5 3, so maybe that wouldn't be a terrible outcome.
With likely less commercial success it's hard to know what would happen, but T2 was M.

Hello Klayton! My name is Jacob and I'm a huge jurassic fan and decided to make a novel that takes place on sorna during hurricane clarissa. The characters are a paleontologist, genetic engineer, and security guard that get caught up in the evacuation and are let stranded with all of the newly released dinosaurs. I was wondering, if you would know, if any of the dinosaurs that were released would have been close to full size or somewhere in the ball park of being sub-adult? The reason I ask this is because it would be nice for the characters to be able to encounter larger specimens and not just juveniles and chicks.

That said, if James Cameron was give the keys to the park today and produced/directed a more novel-driven, 3hour long, R-Rated reboot of JP for Universal...I'd shamelessly be the first in line at the theater to see it.
It will never happen, but one can daydream

As glad as I am that we got Spielberg's Jurassic Park and The Lost World, and the sheer influence it had on me as a kid; I would love to see a James Cameron version as an adult film goer. To imagine anything along the lines of the intensity and action of Aliens would be amazing. Plus I have a feeling Cameron would have leaned harder into the man fucking with nature aspect and evil corporatism of John Hammond, much like the novel, and Carter Burke and WY in Aliens. We could have had more gruesome, brutal, and realistic dinosaur attacks that truly capture the ferocity and fear of an actual animal attack.
As someone who really isn't much of a fan of the Jurassic World series, I think it'd have been cool to just see Jurassic Park as a standalone, hard R rated film, that was more in line with the dark subject matter of the novel.

I can’t see anybody else directing, but, I do think James Cameron would have done a fantastic job. James Cameron does well incorporating allegories into his science fiction films. Like how Aliens was an allegory for the Vietnam war and JP’s message about controlling nature and the over reliance on technology would have fit Cameron.
