    I don’t think it’s gonna kill Blender.
Also, using assets is fine, but if it’s model assets, that’s good enough for practice animations.
For material textures, though, that’s perfectly good anywhere.
So, no, Blenderkit isn’t gonna kill Blender, as long as you use Blenderkit in a respectful way rather than a replacement.
Because much like motion capture and AI, assets should be used as a tool, not a replacement.

Using assets other people made has never been something I would consider for my projects.
As someone who is starting out my 3D art career through Maya and 3ds Max, Using assets wouldn’t make me a better artists. I do however, look at assets on Artstation for reference, but it is always better to learn the craft for yourself rather than using other people’s work.
The fundamental reason I want to be a 3D artist is so I can create, not to monetize my work. Monetization is an important part, but it isn’t the main reason.
Edit: @FilmStop, just to let you know, there will always be hateful comments. I really appreciate your videos and love your content. It’s honest and educational, and I can’t wait to see more of it. Don’t forget that you were created for a purpose. God bless you man!

Using assets without clear licensing is a very bad idea from the get go. If you have a license to use the assets none of the legal issues you mention apply at all.

  • @ArtInMotionStudios

I would argue that just because you didn't model somethings does not mean you are missing out on leaning. 3d modeling is not the only skill you gain from a 3d program.
I would also suggest the correlation is not that more blender users are downloading models just that more 3D artists are now suddenly joining the industry even if it is as a hobbyist.
It is mostly new artists many of them would be searching for free models to use as a way of creating compositions and renders because its fun to play with it like lego.
Might also mention that many schools are switching over to blender as a 3D program of choice when teaching 3D.
Many professionals are switching over most of all as freelancers because it's free and licensing isn't an issue.
I agree if you want to learn you can only do it by doing but I disagree that it is harming blender the only thing that blender has to offer over other software is accessibility because the barrier to entry is so low, also it's strong community.

I started learning Blender a year ago, making optimized models and watching tutorials, but eventually got lazy and started using assets from Sketchfab, BlenderKit, etc. After 6 months, creativity and learning were gone; I was just placing others' work in my scenes and calling it mine.
This won’t kill Blender, but it will kill an artist's creativity-new artists, DON’T use assets, MAKE them.

As a Blender hobiest. All videos I uploaded to TH-cam, or removed from TH-cam in the past, including all videos and images not shown the the public are all made using my own assets. Before 2018 I was traceing assets. My main reason for doing this is not wanting to find out what the rights of the third party content are and needing to correctly reference them. I still use thirdparty audio because I am not skilled in audio.

This vid is just straight sound principles and advice.
You'll get backlash from people though,
They don't want to be told that if they keep cutting corners by using other people's work they're robbing themselves of the chance at getting a decent job in the industry.
No Industry job worth applying for is going to hire someone as a 3D artist if they're only capable of providing their employer someone else's work, with a fresh coat of paint.
Blenderkit has 100% become a crutch for a lot of new users, it won't kill blender though, it'll just create a wave of users that are stuck creating low quality content.

Ive been slowly trying to learn blender the last year, i've been a practical fx guy for almost 30 years, ( so ive really been struggling with learning this, its like learning an alien language) ... but i wish i would have started learning the various VFX programs like blender when they began, so far, as far as personal growth, i never used kitbash or any premade assets, (as an artist its been fun learning how to model, texture etc, from scratch), ...but ...and i'm sure other more seasoned pro VFX guys can back this up, saddly the Studio backed Film Industry is just a big crushing machine to it's VFX artists, more and more the studios want insane levels of VFX but want to pay for it less and less for the same result... and quick turn around times. from an artistic point of view i agree, build your own assets, but when VFX in the film industry, is truly looked upon as strictly utilitarian , (meaning get the job done as quick and cheap as possible), meaning the big studios, hire MANY artists, for shit pay, so its not taking a few artists months and months, you have many artists working under less then a week deadlines, ( cough cough that last FLASH movie ) sorry to anyone who worked on it, i know its not your fault, ... but the way i see it, the more assets available, in many styles etc, the more time VFX artists have to play with, to meet deadlines. so its a weird time we are living in, the film industry, for many other various reasons, is in complete upheaval, who knows where this will all land, with AI coming into the fold, and the ethics surounding that incoming monster. ...

IMHO I 100% agree with you about the saturation of assets being used by beginner and novice artists. I am not a lawyer so I'll lever the legal bit to the experts, but for some reason somewhere along the line we forgot this stuff is supposed to be fun BEACUSE it's challenging. Things that are of value should come from some type work or struggle. This sentiment is best summed up by Tom Hanks in the move "A League of Their Own" .... "It's supposed to be hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. The hard is what makes it great ...". Love your stuff man keep at it🤘

You haven't understood the purpose of assets. 😏 It's not about replacing, but about saving time. We shouldn't expect to model everything! If there's an asset that's exactly what we need, that's enough for us. There are artists who download and rework things.
We shouldn't demonize it! And yes, we need to learn to do things by ourselves. But you know, just by adding pieces together, we can assemble something.

I'm of the philosophy that third-party assets are a tool. When you use them correctly, responsibly, and in moderation, they can be a good addition to your work, especially when those assets are not the focus of the work. Yes, it's better to learn to make them and acquire the skills to make them. Yes, follow copyright law and respect the artists who made them. But I think the important thing here is to as long as you are still learning the skills and not using 3rd Party Assets as a crutch, there is nothing wrong with using them as part of the workflow. Generally, I try to make my own stuff so I don't have to go through the hoops of copyright but I can't lie and say that I haven't been looking at spots like Poly Haven and other CC0 assets.
If I ever decide to use them, I'll give credit even if it is CC0 because I respect the artist's work. While I don't plan on using them anytime soon, it's nice to know that the resources are there and I'm not going to look down on those who do. It's always better to "teach a man to fish," but there is no shame in taking a fish when offered occasionally as long as you are still learning the skill.

I work as dev in 3D industry and I can tell you, every 3D business will use assets whenever it can simply because it frees up the artist to actually do the work that they are paid for. The end result is what counts and that's what pays the bills. Nobody cares that you sculpted the perfect apple and it took you 10 hours, if it sits in the corner and is never the focus. Do that on your own time, not your employer's or customer's.

My guy.... Is it only obvious to me that you stagnated as an artist because you didn't add personal flair to every asset you imported? Or; am I the only one who thinks it's just as much work using assets due to having to alter and stylize them?
For Instance; If I import an asset and the change the size, shape, color, and shading of the object, does it still count as copyright infringement If I bill only myself as the artist? No. It was sold or posted as a modular commodity and only a dumbass would use the asset as is.

Like AI, reusing assets is only good for getting work projects done quickly and making money with as little effort as possible, not for our personal enjoyment, nor improving our skills. BS copyright-trademark-fair-use laws (to the dismay of passionate projects everywhere) need not apply to the fufillment of learning and creating art where we put in the effort and, dare I say, ""soul"".
