    You don't pay for the product, you pay for the support. If you are a big company, you can't afford to search forums and asks other users. You ask the company that makes the program to help you. If there are bugs in the program, you get hot fixes. Blender doesn't offer that.

    Its the same challenge all IT & software faces. The specialists will use tools like NeoVim, Blender, NeoMutt, CyviZen, and other edge high performance for workflow tooling or make their own as specialists do make their own tooling The bulk of people just want to pick something up & have someone to call when they face user error or lack of training rather than improve themselves In large teams the lowest common denominator wins, but its also why specialists tend to be 100x+ more efficient than anyone else in the team

  • @NorthstriderGaming
    @NorthstriderGaming ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

    Why? No dedicated support team. Studios who do commercial products need the tool's company to offer support if there is a problem that needs fixing. Blender doesn't have that. A movie studio can't wait two years to get their problems fixed because some individual felt like fixing it just then.

    As a Blender user for over 7 Years, Only thing i see is Skill Issue. Whoever wants to debate about this, Blender is winning in every category that exsists except only 1 thing and that is Correct Motion capturing during flight and during underwater shots. I made over 50+ commercials and over 10k renders and each one is Super Realistic and looking like its "IRL". I will name few Addon bcs I dont want to show all addons I use but here is few addons that if you know how to work with them and how to use them you can beat 99% 3D artists with this. Here is some of them (saying them from the date i posted the comment): The City Generator v1.1, Geo-Scatter v5.5 with assets, HardOps 988.6, Photographer v5.4.8, Physical Puddles Pro v1.0, Sanctus Library & Materials v3.1.1., Auto Building v1.2.6, Auto Painter Ai v1.0, Decal Master v2.0.2, Pro Align Tools v2.1.1, Blenderkit like you said aswell and all of that combined with K-Cycles 4.3. there is NOTHING in the world that you cant create or RE create with just these ones, and I wont mention other ones bcs Blender Pro user probabbly knows what Im talking about. All of these except Blenderkit i got for free because with just little bit of knowledge in tech industry and if you know how to search online some sh1t you can get them all for free. About the assets that you said, you can get them for free aswell. There is Cracked HUM3D Pages out there where you can get 99% cars that are "IRL" with full detailed textures and full interior design. For Real world terrain there is a lot of Scatter plugins that can generate Grass, Trees, Objects and anything that you really want if you have imagination for it. 90% Plugins you can get for free, mostly ones that are not connected to a server or are online based like blenderkit that req your account to be active. But other than that, the rest you can find for 0€ and make whatever you really want. I had Cinema 4D users that were stunned with realistic animations that I can create, I had 3 Maya users that work for Blizzard that i met on LinkedIn say that stuff Blender is capable of they can just dream about it. There is 1 more disadvatage in Blender except 2 thatti mentioned, for Movie makers its most common excuse and that is Blender cant render Bilions of particles and Bilion of rigged characters (People, Animals, Cars, Folliage) in the same time because it never render it or it will just crush, But time after time, Blender is getting there and I believe they will figure out how to fix this issue aswell in the future. Blender and intuitive? Sadly not :D Like many open-source tools (with Inkscape and its amazing workflow as the only exception I know), Blender lacks much in comparison with the "professional" tools. There is even a fork for better (aka intuitive) usability: Blender4Artists - but with Blender at its core, it inherits the same many problems.

    Blender is used in big studios by departments that do not rely on the pipeline that much, like concept art for example, this is because when you are coming up with ideas for how something could look, you do not need to run shots or publish stuff for other departments, which allows you to work off pipe as much as you can, as soon as you start working on actual shots or RnD for those shots, you need to use a software supported by the pipeline, which usually does not support blender. Really good video by the way.

  • @Exis247
    @Exis247 9 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

    The main reason is support. Blender is a free open source program, and their support team is very... Valve-like... Wheras the big paid for programs offer significantly better support, which is why many companies opt for expensive solutions rather than free ones.

  • @DellAnderson
    @DellAnderson 10 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

    The corporate support issue could perhaps easily(?) be solved by someone doing something analogous to what RedHat did with Linux -- selling support licenses separately from the software, having a community version & a corporate version of the software which are identical except for the right to support. Plugins/AddOns/Cross-compatibility standards for file exchange should help a lot. I'm not convinced that Corporate Visual Effects budgets will be virtually infinite forever. Recall the fascinating documentary "Life after Pi" (th-cam.com/video/9lcB9u-9mVE/w-d-xo.html ) about Rhythm & Hues studio which closed after Life of Pi.

  • @pixelpatron

    This also ignores the library of assets already available to the studio if a switch is made. Meaning if you authored a rock for Uncharted 1 and just wanted to update the mats for it for Uncharted (new)...it most likely means losing any custom shaders/mats/setups on that rock, thus your library is kinda useless. Some stuff get's re-used between productions. I mean how much better does a barrel model look from Uncharted 3 to 4? Sure the PBR stuff came on-line around that time...but the model was basically probably the same. It's faster and cheaper to keep the software and pipeline that is tried/tested/working over re-setting all of it up again for 1000's of assets just to make a switch to Blender.

    It would be nice to dive into more detail on what exactly 3DS or another commercial tool does better than Blender, or how it makes work faster, etc. Maybe it would get some developer attention. It would also be nice if IBM/RedHat or whoever offered commercial support and features for Blender with the same level of care that AutoDesk does for example.

    Here's a very simple and real reason: compatibility with other studios. Your SME studio gets to be involved in a huge multi studio project, what do you think the software specs for the project will be? Blender? Noooo. Only have Blender and not that? Well, stay not getting invited to the party then. There you go. That's why no bigwig's taking the leap. Maybe if everyone everywhere switched all at once but that's just insanity.

    Very well argumented video. This is not exclusive to the VFX industry. Linux has been under this sort of banner for decades now. As for discounts it totally makes sense for the supplier and reseller to have deals in basically every field. With a former company I've worked we would have deals with HP to deliver servers in bulk for a pretty good discount to keep the business on both sides flowing.

    I've been an environment / prop artist for about 12 years now. I started out with Maya, then 3DS Max and now I've been using Blender for about 6 months. They all have their pros and cons but out of the 3? I prefer Blender. Over the years of using Maya and Max, I learnt workarounds, things not to do, buttons not to press after certain task, all of which we shouldn't need to do or worry about but we do. Blender hasn't crashed on me once, booleans work, I don't have to delete history in fear of it messing up my uv's and I'm finding more creative, fast and simple ways of doing something that would seem near impossible in Max / Maya. As someone else mentioned, studios don't hate Blender; if a studio has a franchise that has been going for 10+ years, their pipeline and tools are almost locked into Max or Maya at that point, it's probably cheaper to pay the licence fees over losing production time in training everyone in base Blender, then getting the pipeline up to scratch and then re-training people how to use their new tools (because I bet they won't be EXACTLY the same as before). I think Blender will be an industry standard one day, but it will take new studios and / or new projects. The last place I worked at, a big AAA studio, is using Blender on their next project, I'm currently using Blender in my current job which is a small, new indie team. But you won't see the likes of Rockstar, Blizzard, or any of the big, multi studio companies using it any time soon. With all that being said, as an artist I have my preference but I don't really care what I use. They all do the same job :)

    Blender 2.6X and up were not that slow. Blender was much faster, less bloated, and more stable than Maya and 3DS max back then. In fact, Blender even beat Maya with rendering speeds back then because of Cycles since Maya was still farting around with Mental Ray and its software renderer. Blender is used a lot in game studios both indie and some larger companies such as Ubisoft and Infinity Ward so "Industry Standard" doesn't carry as much weight as it did 10 years ago.

    I use both, because both have certain things missing. For instance, Blender can inport and export in the gtTF format, Maya can't. However, big console manufacturers (Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft) all provide importers and exporters for their proprietary formats only for Maya, not for Blender. And so I end up having to use both at the same time, since I need to support all of these formats in my game engine.

    Wētāfx uses Maya and Houdini because they have written a lot of their own plugins for it and it works really well with the infrastructure they have set up, including the render wall with renderman and plow and stuff. If they went to blender they’d have to redo the whole pipeline for minimal payoff.

    I'm retired from IT. For what it's worth, most companies I've worked for, preferred to fire the old people and hire new people rather than pay for retraining in new technology. To add insult to injury, it was common to be told to train the new guy in your stuff to get him off the ground running or lose your last two to four weeks of notice (severance package). Occasionally the "new" guys were hb1b visa holders from other countries being paid a fraction of what we made.

    I suppose that means that blender is not for the films that are going after the academy award for best visual effects. However the low cost makes it ideal for low cost productions like TV commercials and TV shows. You know 30+ years ago, that was the use case for Lightwave3D. It couldn’t compete with expensive solutions from Silicon Graphics (think Terminator 2, Jurassic Park) but was the solution of choice for TV (think Babylon 5, X-Files, SeaQuest DSV).

    Blender is not trash at all. In fact, is much better than most of the other softwares (at least the autodesk ones) which are plenty of legacy outdated garbage tools that they don't ditch because they don't want to piss some client they've made in 2003. So that's why when you start up blender it takes 5 to 10 seconds, and when you start up 3d max it can take you more than 45 seconds. Also,if you want a proper render engine, you will need to purchase a license to a better one, like redshift or vray, because the ones included are terrible, and this may add some extra seconds to the start up. The freedom that Blender has to reinvent itself and evolve is what made it the awesome and revolutionary tool that it came to be. Big studios, they don't like to change their entire pipelines and shuffle things around, because their initial loss will be huge, as you've said. But little studios oriented to tv commercial/social media work, are leaning to use Blender more and more.

    I can tell you from experience a 50% discount on the software would be a small discount when purchasing things at scale. Most of the software licensing I've seen has 70-90% discount
