Just LOVE this -- and agrees with my experience. The only practice this works for me (small engines used infrequently) is to run them "dry". Your "vented jars" just show what is happening to fuel that sits unseen. NO preservative *ever* worked for me (40 years).
Best real experiment ever, like I commented yesterday it’s all with the ethanol. From Minnesota, 25 years using ethanol free pump gas for small engines, and collector cars, never had one of my engines failed to start, and no feathering the choke, I always treated my mower and snowblower gas can with sta-bil.. But watching this, could have, all these years been adding a little marvel, to off set any corrosive effects of gasoline maybe?? Thanks Taryl!! Awesome!!!

Im glad you are going to redo this experiment. I had suggested a long time ago about letting the engines sit for months like you would from fall to spring. This should be a better indicator if these engines fire up with these additives. Thanks T
I appreciate the effort and truly like the experiments. I feel that to use a little of the product(s) may have a short term benefit. Personally, draining the fuel bowl and emptying the tank seems to work pretty good all the time. I have used SeaFoam a little, to clean a carb that was surging a little. It seemed to work. I try not to let a fuel bowl sit with fuel in them any longer than a couple of months unless I forget.
Amazing how consistent all of these were with the number of pulls needed to start (8-9, with 2 outliers at 7 and 10). Basically, they were all the same. Great video, Taryl!
Taryl I have watched and followed you for years. You have dedicated a part of your business to do a long term test we appreciate it. To have sponsors means you at a level of success. Here’s what I know about fuel stabilizers and that’s I needed get an old mower running right so I pulled the carburetor used brake cleaner to remove dirt, varnish, etc. Runs great now. Time to brush my teeth. Happy Easter.
Start your mower, once or twice, during winter. Let it run for a minute or so in the driveway. I do this and have a Honda push mower that is 13 years old. Never had a SINGLE problem! Change the oil every couple years, blow out the air cleaner. Never even tried gas savers or anything. Best mower I ever had.😊

Thank You for doing this. i dont know Donyboy personally, but it is clear that Taryl is right in this case. Taryl test is clear and scientific, made in a standard way equal for all product. he even has two engine with normal gas as a control group.
Taryl, keep up the great job. You have been very neutral in this experiment. Don't get flustered by people's negative remarks which are false to begin with. You do a thorough job much respect Shane A
Thanks Taryl for all your hard work. Maybe the reason all the E10 engines needed additional choke to keep them running at startup was because there was water accumulation in the bottom of the fuel bowls. At startup the water was being sucked up with the fuel, so the engine needed more choke. Once the engine ran on all fuel, it would run with the choke completely off. And the VP didn't have that problem because it was non-ethanol fuel, so no water sitting in the bowl.
Taryl, I have learned so much from your videos I want to send you a sincere thank you. I am not a master small engine mechanic but I will tackle any job and look here first for any tips or advice, Thank you for sharing your years of expertise with all of us. YOU DA MAN.......
Taryl don't fall to the wonkiness and or the haters. Your test are real deal and as far as the "Space shuttle term" No one owns it. Thank you for helping people who don't understand small engines and with a twist of comedy to it. Keep the video's coming. You will always have haters and nothing will change their views.
I’ve never understood how folks can get so brand loyal that any criticism of their pet brand is like insulting their mother. That’s pretty shallow in my opinion.
..... Scientific method wins out again, Our gender seems to take a few days to admit we are wrong. We don't seem to have the same stagnant fuel issues (without the harsh winters) in AU.
I was a K100 fanBoy, skeptical when it failed. When Taryl did the water in the Mason jar with a double dose of it and it separated, I realized that I had just purchased my last bottle of the stuff 💔

One thing i would be interested in seeing, on the engines that surge and run poorly, try some of the """fuel system cleaners"" like B-12chemtool, or Techron, Lucas or Gumout that you pour in the tank, and see if it will get the carburetor cleaned out or not.
Travis Mauldin I worked in a carb rebuild shop, and after the degreasing tank my job was on the teardown bench. I could always tell when they had that stinking ass "Gumout"in 'em,I'd take the top off and get hit with the most god awful stench !!!!!!! I'd toss 'em outside for about an hour until they "aired out" !!!! All the rubber diaphragms, seat needles, were shot !!!!! They had to be run through the acid bath tanks before we could rebuild them !!!!!! Gumout is Garbage, don't use it!!!!!!!
Been following your videos. Very interesting and I'm glad someone took the time to do this experiment. There's a brand in your experiment that I used to use and always wondered if it really made a difference. I've shared your videos with others who refuse to believe that they might have been wasting their money and They are now believers. It's hard for many of us to admit and accept that our beliefs have been wrong, but it's great to find out the truth, whatever it is. Thanks again.
I would have liked to see what was in the float bowls of all the engines tested to see if there was rust. I use Sta-Bil and Startron together and my snowblower sits for around 8 months depending on the first and last snow of the seasons and it starts on the first pull every winter. When I didn't use a fuel additive it didn't want to start without starter fluid so I do think some of these additives do work IMO. Keep up the fun and good information.
If drinking bourbon is fuel addictive, then I will I will drink all I can handle. I agree with you Taryl. I quit using any fuel additives when I started watching g these videos. I have learned to run my equipment out of fuel at the end of mowing season here in the south. My equipment gave me no issues at all when I cranked it up last week to mow. Good job and keep the videos coming!
I see you have the engines equipped with a valve in the fuel line. It would be interesting to see how shutting the fuel off and letting the float bowl burn dry would affect the starting. Actually I know it helps, because I do it.
It does help, but not forever. I've done that on an old Craftsman riding mower with an 11hp B&S to pull a yard cart in the summer, and sometimes in the colder months. Every time I shut it off for the day, I close the valve and let it run till it dies. That worked fine for two years. This spring it started right up as usual, but then died about thirty minutes later and wouldn't restart without starting fluid. I pulled the bowl and sure enough, sediment. Took the whole carb off and cleaned it and it ran good again. I guess next season I'll actually remove the bowl and dry it to see how long that works. But one thing for sure I learned is, the fuel filter in the gas line has no effect. Might keep out large particles like grass or something, but not the tiny stuff that eventually clogs the carb. Ofc, that tiny stuff could be coming in through the air filter too.
@@dkeith45 most likely the dry bowl allowed for gaskets and seals and o-ring to dryrot a bit also allows the internal carb body to oxidize(depending on ketal makeup), that accounts for your bowl debri. its a damned if u do, damned if you don't situation. last of the yrs i run dry ,then add straight seafoam to tank and give quick start then store the tractor. it will stop the dryrot and also never varnish and is a lube too
Taryl, I also agree with you just maintain you equipment and you will not need any type of additive. For me I believe your informative demonstration proved all I need to see. I think we should move on and possibly auction off the engines, just for the freight charge and put K100 to bed, along with all the other additives.

All of us Grass Rats look up to Taryl for his informative and fun videos.
Hi Taryl. Now, about that "Space shuttle" saying. Donyboy did use it in his Older 8hp Briggs carb cleaning video in 17.1.2012. But hey, big deal. You are both great machine wizards. That's what matters.
So the moral of the story is either run ethanol free gas or if you run e10 gas completely drain it out of the system when you store it for long periods of time. Pretty thankful I have ethanol free gas at the pump where I live. I might need to reconsider using fuel stabilizers now after watching this video. I might have been throwing my money away this whole time. Keep up the great work 👍🏼
I totally agree,Roger. As much as anything, I have been starting up all of my engines at least once or twice a month and have seen immediate positive results. The Proof Is In The Pudding.
I watch Taryl, Donyboy, Steve's Small Engine and Mustie1. I try to take everything in and use what works for me. It's okay to have a difference of opinion.
We've used Stabil in our old tractor for over the winter storage. I have no idea if it worked, but we felt better using it. And for our 5 gallon storage cans we only use Type-1 Safety Cans, which seal the can from outside air. We've stored ethanol gas in 5 gallon Type 1 Safety cans for 4 years with no degradation of the fuel.
Love it Taryl, appreciate you putting the story straight. When someone cannot put forth a rational argument they turn to irrational tarnishing of one's reputation. I watched the other youtubers video and first impression i had at the time was that the test was severely flawed due to the stabilizer fluid mix level used, that dilution was ill advised as we need to use a dilution that is stated on the instructions and not the monstrous levels that was not even close to manufacturers instructions. I also found that adding water afterwards wasn't a true test as the test should be does the stabilizer keep the fuel itself from breaking down or absorbing water. The time of a couple of minutes is also a poor duplication of real life, we store our equipment for many months to a year or two, a single day test wasn't going to properly test against the intended real world use. Your test duplicates/mimics real world conditions in multiple products, solutions as dictated in the manufacturer instructions, and over a period of time that a real person would encounter in using the product as intended. I like to always be positive and the other youtuber does make some good repair videos, however on this one i will also say it as i see it and your real test is the most definitive as it is apples to apples how the products were intended to be used by the different manufacturers and equipment owners intended use/need. Keep up the great work i love both the knowledge and humorous delivery. I generally have used Premium non ethanol gas in my small engines, however last time out went with Premium non ethanol gas with a fuel stabilizer. Seeing i do not use ethanol gas i don't really require a product which deals with the ethanol degradation or water absorption and i see through your testing that there isn't a real solution for ethanol specifically that effectively works at this time. I am still researching engineered fuels, used Tru Fuel however i am starting to hear some concerns with that particular product. All the other engineered fuel products seem to be problem free so i may use for my chainsaw seeing that is the piece of equipment that i use less frequently so using a much higher cost fuel can be justified for that purpose. For the rest of my equipment if i am forced to purchase ethanol fuel i'll likely just separate and remove the water, turning the ethanol gas to ethanol free gas as that seems the best economical solution. Cheers.
Sir you are a great educator & entertainer. You give me a good laugh while I learn. Perfect stress relief! Love your channel & I'm going back to watch this series.
Taryl I trust you. And you said once... if you don’t like it make your own video and experiment. I can’t wait for November video with new experiment it will be same conditions of what happen here during winter in Wisconsin. Keep going Taryl !!!!
No, keep the same gas for the next year, and see if the additives make any difference over a 2 year span. Of course they seem to work over a year- no surprise there. Don't even bother starting them every 2 months- give a res-start in November and another next April.
Exactly. I want to see if the gas in the cans is still viable over time. Because many of us put the additives in the gas can, thinking it'll be viable longer without it.
@@dkeith45 Yeah, why else would you put anything in gas for small engines or other engines. Most of the time, I drain the gas, run the engine dry and leave it on the compression stroke (keeps the valves and cylinder free from rust). Lately, I began running long term storage units dry with a bit of oil in the gas to keep the corrosion in the carb to a minimum. Mike
@@mtwseneca I'm thinking mainly of those of us who keep a generator handy, for emergencies and have gas stored in cans for that purpose. I may only use the generator once a year, or once every couple of years. How long will the gas in the sealed can remain viable? In my generator, after every use, I drain all the gas from the tank and dry the inside with shop towels and remove the carb bowl and dry it too.
@@dkeith45 excellent comment- you guys and people with snowblowers (I have 2) should be the focus of the experiment. That is interesting- I wonder just how long gas will remain viable in a sealed container.
@@mtwseneca Yup. Snowblower owners too. In my area, I sometimes only use it once a year, if that. Then a year will come where we'll get a huge blizzard, and the driveway is completely blocked. Can't get to a gas station to get fresh fuel in such a case. So how long is the gas in the can still usable? And I do the same with my snowblower every year I do with my generator, I completely drain the gas from the tank and dry it inside, and remove the carb bowl, drain and dry it too.
Dude, you're doing a straight up, fair comparison. Now, granted, for 100% scientific test, it would have to be double blind--and more than one engine per additive. But for a medium-time TH-camr, this is a damned honest experiment and useful for your viewers. Not sure why that guy had to get sand in his crack,

I don't know why all the drama.
Donny Boy is jealous of your dental work in my opinion !!!
Taryl has a perfect set of choppers! I could understand how some folks could tend toward the jealous side.
Keep up the good work Taryl! Do not listen to that other guy, you are being honest like always.
I have been a John Deere lawn and garden tech for 30 years and I have not found anything Taryl has done to be in any way misleading or biased. he is a master tech and an artist in the restoration / modification work that I have seen him do. I would fully trust him to service and repair my equipment.
Good for Ariens and ProParts Direct! Join the contest and help out! I don’t think Taryl has to make any excuses for this experiment he and his guys are doing, it’s actually being run very professional. Give em a thumbs up if anything! Thanks Taryl and friends!
I picked up every bit of Mechanical education from TH-cam, wrecking yards, parts stores.
I finally saw how shops stay in business. So that's where Taryl and a few others help me.
I think this guy is authentic. Thanks
i like donnyboy73, he's informative.
i really like taryl, he is both informative and entertaining.
Just LOVE this -- and agrees with my experience. The only practice this works for me (small engines used infrequently) is to run them "dry". Your "vented jars" just show what is happening to fuel that sits unseen. NO preservative *ever* worked for me (40 years).
Best small engine channel on youtube hands down.
Awesome!!!
This is a great unbiased experiment. I think you're an excellent mechanic and you use sound reasoning.
I stand with you Taryl!! You have always been upfront and honest (funny as all heck too!) your channel is doing great and there is always going to be some people that envy gets the best of them. Keep doing what your doing, cheers to you and the boys and thanks for GREAT content and info! And as always there’s our dinner!!!! YAHOO!
What Taryl, who’s fueling the drama? I’m fired up! Hey can I have an engine when the experiment is over? Ya know, the one that still works.
Im glad you are going to redo this experiment. I had suggested a long time ago about letting the engines sit for months like you would from fall to spring. This should be a better indicator if these engines fire up with these additives. Thanks T
I don't even know what that was all about, obviously, I missed something. No matter, keep up the good work Taryl.
Sweet test stand. She'd be pricey to build post Covid.
Amazing how consistent all of these were with the number of pulls needed to start (8-9, with 2 outliers at 7 and 10). Basically, they were all the same. Great video, Taryl!

"This ain't Space Shuttle Fuel" Taryl you have my permission to use that phrase......been watching from the beginning of the Experiment.
Go get'em Taryl! You're as fair as you can be. Us grass rats love the videos.

Taryl don't fall to the wonkiness and or the haters. Your test are real deal and as far as the "Space shuttle term" No one owns it. That saying has been around before TH-cam back in early 80's And before the shuttle we would say "This is not NASA" Keep doing what your doing and don't change a thing.

I see that Donyboy73 has 260k followers but it's really funny that if I come to youtube for some instruction Taryl is the TH-camrs who shows up. Love your channel especially the kohler K series
One thing i would be interested in seeing, on the engines that surge and run poorly, try some of the """fuel system cleaners"" like B-12chemtool, or Techron, Lucas or Gumout that you pour in the tank, and see if it will get the carburetor cleaned out or not.
Travis Mauldin
I worked in a carb rebuild shop, and after the degreasing tank my job was on the teardown bench.
Love this experiment. What should I be learning from the vented/not vented jars? Is it just to illustrate evaporation?
I just switched all my small engines to 90 0ctane non ethanol
Tack!
November to April is a realistic test. Thanks Taryl!!

Hi Taryl. Now, about that "Space shuttle" saying. Donyboy did use it in his Older 8hp Briggs carb cleaning video in 17.1.2012.
But hey, big deal. You are both great machine wizards. That's what matters.
You don't have to explain to us we know you're legit. I haven't even heard of those others because you're the best one on the youtube's
Keep up the great work 👍🏼
Taryl, i think your test is very fair and impartial. Keep it up sir! 👍Roger
I totally agree,Roger. As much as anything, I have been starting up all of my engines at least once or twice a month and have seen immediate positive results. The Proof Is In The Pudding.

That's what makes up this great world 😆 why can't we just get along🤗don't worry be FUCKING happy
We've used Stabil in our old tractor for over the winter storage. I have no idea if it worked, but we felt better using it. And for our 5 gallon storage cans we only use Type-1 Safety Cans, which seal the can from outside air. We've stored ethanol gas in 5 gallon Type 1 Safety cans for 4 years with no degradation of the fuel.
donyboy73 is ok, but he kind of has the whole "stick up yer ass" vibe.
donyboy is being a butt head i don't watch him anymore i think Taryl got in his head
Cheers.
