I've been visiting Germany since my childhood, and it remains one of my favourite European countries to visit.
When driving across the country on the Autobahn, you don't see much.
But when driving on B-roads, there's a lot of beautiful nature and lovely towns.
My favourite parts are the Alps in the south, Schwarzwald, and the area along Rhine between Mainz and Bonn.

You’ll find the Zwiebelturm (yes, "onion tower") style all over Bavaria as well as in other Catholic-dominated areas in central/southern Europe. Often this building style was chosen to strengthen the church’s presence after the reformation. A major part of the regional Baroque architecture.

If you drive by Kassel and Fulda you will see some amazing scenery on the Autobahn as well; hills and forest and the motorway meandering over and through it like a gaint rollercoaster, with deep bridges over valleys.
Keep save Ian, and keep Ellie on the right as much as possible. Because Germans on the left and middle track of the Autobahn many times drive there with a minimal speed of 100 mls. ph. It can be a bit annoying to be stuck between trucks and caravans going uphill on the right track sometimes. But, believe me; having to deal with tearing Audi's, BMW's and Mercedeses, driven by German Jeremy Clarksons, growing in your rear view mirror alarmingly, is downright SCARY.

Just as well I carried on, as by the next morning, Passau was deep under water.

I plan te see all the rest of this trip today. I started wondering what Elly’s fuel consumption was like and what this meant in total cost of fuel :p.
    Cheers from Belgium!

You were rewarded for the disappointment of too much privacy in Austria with the most beautiful of cities in Germany.
    Thanks for sharing ;-)

Passau, you pronounce it with an ou like in south. I was there once when I worked as a field engineer in radio communications, beautiful city, good food and friendly people. I remember I worked with an American engineer who was flying in at Munich and rented a car there. We were waiting for him at a radio site when a Mercedes parked at the gate. A familiar face with very big grin stepped out of the car: "It was only twenty dollars more!!!" 😂

Oh it was there alright ;) but as you point out, the distance made the change very gradual - so not as perceivably noticeable.

We call that roof of the church "Zwiebelturm". In translation oniontower ;-)
The green color depend of the oxidiced copper where it is made from.
This kinnd of roof you can see mainly in "Süddeutschland" (south germany), or what you know better as bavaria :-)

We have a few green foofs in England due to copper. My school's roof was like that - all been replaced now - looks so bland on google maps now ;)

The area around Passau including nearby villages regularly gets flooded because of the confluence of three rivers, sometimes resulting in massive damage to property.
By the way, the domes on top of German churches are colloquially called 'onion domes' and are common in that overwhelmingly Christian country.

Guess I can uncheck Austria off the countries that I will visit. If I can't take photographs due to fear of paying a huge fine, I may as well visit the country via the internet. Thanks Hubnut for the information.

Passau looks rather lovely and not a bad place to stay for a few days to explore the area. I'm half wondering if they do a Christmas market. A nice place to take a "proper" film camera and shoot some black and white film. Once again I feel genuinely enriched by random places and food I've never even heard of. After a brief Austrian pause, loveliness abounds!

Zadster They do have a Christmas market, like most towns in Germany andAustria. There are even Boat trios, that go from one to another between Austria and Germany.A lot of Americans do that in Winter,The Christmas market, is in from of the Cathedral.

Most cities on the Donau (Danube) river are great. I am fortunate to deliver equipment to the passenger ships so I am quite frequently on the Danube river.
Actually Germany is beautiful, it is a shame most people only race down the Autobahn boasting at home how they traveled on an average speed of 300 MpH back home (of course) .
When I travel I prefer the Bundes Strasse ( the A roads ) as these are fairly quiet and take you to the nicest places. A 2CV is a perfect car to travel around for those roads.
I can also recommenced the Mosel River in Germany near Koblenz, vinyards and the beautiful Vulcanic Eifel, although most petrol head-amateur racer driving gods visit the Nurburgring, wreck their car and have to find out how to get home. Of course they purchase the Nurburgring sticker to show that they are part of a secretive brotherhood !
