I wish you luck finding one, I believe there are still some decent condition Asconas knocking around in Germany. A cousin of mine had a 1986 kadett diesel and I remember driving it years ago. The thing I remember is the brilliant heater, he used to start work at 4am and most cars then had very bad heaters. Never saw an automatic before. Very reliable car as I remember. Keep fit windows and hubcaps as well as sqweaky wipers.

I didn't know the Kadett E had the same squeaky wiper issue as the Astra mk2, though I suppose it makes sense. That drove me nuts and put me off them for life. Well, that and the fact that every one I drove broke down on me...
The washing machine broke down, bills keep arriving... and had problems with my Pension (NHS pension..I'm a retired Paramedic) and some Pratt allowed their shopping trolley to slam into my wifes car in the local Aldi car park! a gloomy day all round!...But.....Yipeee, my daily Fix from Mr 'HubNut' The Eccentric and Brilliant ambassador for 'TRUE REALISTIC' automotive knowledge has arrived! And in a flash..All is good; Birds are chirping in the garden, the sun is shining with a beautiful 'dappled' light permeating through the woodland glade behind my house...and...It's Steak n chips for tea! At first some relatively boring scenery, but then the ride over the shiny, rainy asphalt and the beautiful views of the Balaton more than made up for that. What a picturesque landscape -- I really loved the evening light which gave the lake a rather unusual colour. As always, great narration and super-interesting tidbits: that 1.6D automatic Ascona was quite something!
That Ascona is an original early reg, somewhere around 1992./1993. And it didn't produce 55bhp. It had 54 of them... ... Yeah.., but they lasted forever and ever. My uncle had one, 350 000 miles, 1.6d but 5 door version, used it as a taxi for 7 years. Finally rotted away some years ago, but man, what a car that was for croatian standards in middle 90's.
Saw a Trabant estate in beautiful condition coughing it’s way up the A5 near Cannock of all places. Magnificent. Also I love the noise of a 2CV indicator. Great videos of late Ian, Elly as usual proving to be a trooper.
Can't imagine a 1.6D with an auto box strapped to it....the manual version was slow enough already!! Nice to see it in Henna Red though, I remember numerous Vauxhall Chevettes, Astras and Cavaliers in that colour back in the day.
Hi Ian, Well .looking out of your air b&b window this morning I thought that's just the same as my house in rural Essex as you know Essex is very mountainous....with snow capped hills and majestic lakes.......(er make that an occasional bump and some reservoirs).... . When the Daewoo Matiz became the Chevrolet Matiz, I hired one for a week . It was brand new with only delivery mileage and boy, was I surprised at how it coped with hundreds of motorway miles , was quiet & comfortable ,and it had air con which was handy.

Purchase a Dual-SIM phone for future international data use. They're not expensive anymore. I recently purchased a Motorola G7 Play for £125. Then use local SIM cards for data & the UK SIM for incoming calls/texts. You can select which SIM you wish to use exclusively for data. Might work out a lot cheaper. There is no point in expensive contract phones anymore, even the cheaper ones now do everything pretty well and have good cameras.
You are currently travelling over the same roads as my second son Michael last year in a converted 1974 Mercedes diesel camper bus 12 years older than he. He swapped it last winter for an….. Opel Ascona 19 SR (brownish red!) 1986. His age. But I guess a lot faster than that 16 D automatic. He makes a living out of selling and buying old vinyl and bacalite records. So his cars are classics, but in the Hubnut spectrum. :D

Matiz were made in Poland, city of Gliwice I reckon. Still many around here in Poland, plenty of them patched with filler to cover endemic rust, the previous model Daewoo Tico was also build in the same factory and sold in most part of the former Eastern Block.
My parents had an Ascona Diesel manuel in 1983-1984. It was so astmatik, crawling through the Kassel hills in the low gears when going on vacation in Italy

I specially like the part where you were following that orange Dyane, wading through water, cobblestone... certainly Elly was more "tested" on those roads than at the Citroen test course in Ferte Vidame! It would be awesome if you could get your hands on a Trabant and make a video, I´m sure you can rent one in Germany for a day -anyway, just a thought, it´s always very easy to spend someone else´s time and money! 13:43 - Trucks usually tend to stick to designated E-routes to simplify transport of goods. Officially, these don't have to be displayed (we don't do it in the UK for example though they do exist here) but it does make it easier, from a transport operator's point of view, to navigate and track cargo throughout the EU.

The Matiz was available in The UK in 6 colours. My then boss had two 'S' reg Leaf Green models, but we could've had Gold, Myrtle blue, red, and I can't remember the other colours, but black, white, or yellow were available abroad, as was an even more basic model with dark grey bumpers!! :-O

Sad that you and Noraly will not meet - that would be a special TH-cam road trip event - but keep up the contact as you both travel around. Hungary is mostly a very flat country, but they do have some hills in just the right places: - On the north shore of Lake Balaton, so you can have a great view over the lake. - On the right bank of Danube in Budapest, so you can enjoy a wonderful view of the city. To be fair, their highest mountain Kekes has similar height as Snowdon in Wales.
Wow an Accona C in wonderful condition, interestingly the UK spec base model originally had different headrests where they was I presume a soft plastic like a metro. Not sure if we got the Automatic diesel though I will have to ask my all knowing Guru, nice spot! And a glimpse of a Vectra A cool!
Hungary looked like a nice country to ride motorcycles/scooters through. We have a very large VW fest a few miles from where I live, here in Southern California. After a few hours of walking around the fest, I’m ready to go home, I can’t imagine hanging around for three days. 😬

i had a 86 combo 1.6 diesel automatic from new , one of the finest cars i drove. helped me keeping my driving licence , it would do 165 kph if needed , but ran fine at 120-130 all day at under 6 litre fuel consumption.
Lovely surroundings, too bad there aren't more older normal cars arround. That Ascona was great, I believe opel change it halfway the 90's but you could get so many trim/motor combinations. Even back then you could order a Rekord E1 (Carlton) diesel with a sport package. And automatic probably.

I travelled 7300 miles around Europe 22 countries going from UK to Nordkapp then to Gavdos Greece and home and concur with your comment about old cars I was disappointed I didn't see more old cars as every country generally had new and newish cars only Albania seemed to have older Mercs Golfs but again not many
Wow, did "only" 5400 miles this summer, 11 Western European countries in a "new" 1998 Fiat. Next year all my children are old enough to refuse, so it'll just be the wife and I. Can't wait.
I avoid tolls too. Much of the time it's almost as quick. In Illinois USA many of the toll roads are in terrible condition. Aren't the tolls supposed to pay for maintenance? You said something about octane numbers, the U.S. system is weird. It averages two different methods of ratings. My '65 Corvair low power, low compression needs a mid grade. Usually I buy the ethanol free kind, costs more, but haven't had to rebuild the carburetors in years.
Dan R I live in Southern California, the fuel is horrible, plus we are being price/tax raped at the pump. I have a 66 beetle, so I use the cheap stuff.

I would say that Ascona is a bit more than "find of the day". I wonder if it's the only base-spec 1.6 Diesel automatic Ascona left in the world? If it isn't, there's a decent chance that it's the best condition one out there. Looks like it's had one elderly owner for most of its life...
You must make time for a road trip to South Spain,,,no trabants,but plenty of Seats,Renaults and Peugeots,,,but beware becoming a dying breed. The Kitano in our village break up cars for scrap metal,,,just the other day drove up in very tasty first generation Renault Five with quilted dashboard. Within an hour of heavy sledgehammering car was reduced to scrap, Sacrilege,,,your comments about New cars in Hungary brought on this tangent,,,😁😁😁
Broadband in Croatia is very patchy. In the villages and small towns it is rubbish but in the bigger towns and cities it is excellent. Cheaper than aberystwyth and faster too.

Opel Ascona 19 SR (brownish red!) 1986. His age. But I guess a lot faster than that 16 D automatic. He makes a living out of selling and buying old vinyl and bacalite records. So his cars are classics, but in the Hubnut spectrum. :D

Matiz were made in Poland, city of Gliwice I reckon. Still many around here in Poland, plenty of them patched with filler to cover endemic rust, the previous model Daewoo Tico was also build in the same factory and sold in most part of the former Eastern Block.
My parents had an Ascona Diesel manuel in 1983-1984. It was so astmatik, crawling through the Kassel hills in the low gears when going on vacation in Italy
Great video Ian! I specially like the part where you were following that orange Dyane, wading through water, cobblestone... certainly Elly was more "tested" on those roads than at the Citroen test course in Ferte Vidame! It would be awesome if you could get your hands on a Trabant and make a video, I´m sure you can rent one in Germany for a day -anyway, just a thought, it´s always very easy to spend someone else´s time and money! Keep at it!

The 2CV event was massive so I imagine most roads through Europe have at least one heading home now. Would love to get another one but they are very pricy these days. Luckily, I can be a virtual passenger in Elly thanks to your excellent videos.

13:43 - Trucks usually tend to stick to designated E-routes to simplify transport of goods. Officially, these don't have to be displayed (we don't do it in the UK for example though they do exist here) but it does make it easier, from a transport operator's point of view, to navigate and track cargo throughout the EU.
Hi Ian - any chance on a video about the logistics of such a fab trip? Stuff like what you pack, how you choose routes and how (and how far in advance) you book accom. The Matiz was available in The UK in 6 colours. My then boss had two 'S' reg Leaf Green models, but we could've had Gold, Myrtle blue, red, and I can't remember the other colours, but black, white, or yellow were available abroad, as was an even more basic model with dark grey bumpers!! :-O
Culture on HubNut ? For sure but in your own inimitable style Ian . Sad that you and Noraly will not meet - that would be a special TH-cam road trip event - but keep up the contact as you both travel around. Ellie will need a rest by the time this is all over but you of course will be continuing your travels and if it's half as good as this has been then the winter months here in blighty will be easier to endure. Hungary is mostly a very flat country, but they do have some hills in just the right places:
- On the north shore of Lake Balaton, so you can have a great view over the lake.
- On the right bank of Danube in Budapest, so you can enjoy a wonderful view of the city.
To be fair, their highest mountain Kekes has similar height as Snowdon in Wales.
Wow an Accona C in wonderful condition, interestingly the UK spec base model originally had different headrests where they was I presume a soft plastic like a metro. Not sure if we got the Automatic diesel though I will have to ask my all knowing Guru, nice spot! And a glimpse of a Vectra A cool!
Hungary looked like a nice country to ride motorcycles/scooters through. We have a very large VW fest a few miles from where I live, here in Southern California. After a few hours of walking around the fest, I’m ready to go home, I can’t imagine hanging around for three days. 😬

i had a 86 combo 1.6 diesel automatic from new , one of the finest cars i drove. helped me keeping my driving licence , it would do 165 kph if needed , but ran fine at 120-130 all day at under 6 litre fuel consumption.

Lovely surroundings, too bad there aren't more older normal cars arround. That Ascona was great, I believe opel change it halfway the 90's but you could get so many trim/motor combinations. Even back then you could order a Rekord E1 (Carlton) diesel with a sport package. And automatic probably.

Loving that base spec Ascona C. Did it have the radio blank as base base base spec? The NA Diesel was once reviewed as struggling to stay abreast of motorway traffic. Loving the roadtrip series, reminds me of driving a Żuk plus Trabant back on my channel last summer!
I travelled 7300 miles around Europe 22 countries going from UK to Nordkapp then to Gavdos Greece and home and concur with your comment about old cars I was disappointed I didn't see more old cars as every country generally had new and newish cars only Albania seemed to have older Mercs Golfs but again not many
Wow, did "only" 5400 miles this summer, 11 Western European countries in a "new" 1998 Fiat. Next year all my children are old enough to refuse, so it'll just be the wife and I. Can't wait.
I avoid tolls too. Much of the time it's almost as quick. In Illinois USA many of the toll roads are in terrible condition. Aren't the tolls supposed to pay for maintenance? You said something about octane numbers, the U.S. system is weird. It averages two different methods of ratings. My '65 Corvair low power, low compression needs a mid grade. Usually I buy the ethanol free kind, costs more, but haven't had to rebuild the carburetors in years.
Dan R I live in Southern California, the fuel is horrible, plus we are being price/tax raped at the pump. I have a 66 beetle, so I use the cheap stuff.

I would say that Ascona is a bit more than "find of the day". I wonder if it's the only base-spec 1.6 Diesel automatic Ascona left in the world? If it isn't, there's a decent chance that it's the best condition one out there. Looks like it's had one elderly owner for most of its life...
You must make time for a road trip to South Spain,,,no trabants,but plenty of Seats,Renaults and Peugeots,,,but beware becoming a dying breed. The Kitano in our village break up cars for scrap metal,,,just the other day drove up in very tasty first generation Renault Five with quilted dashboard. Within an hour of heavy sledgehammering car was reduced to scrap, Sacrilege,,,your comments about New cars in Hungary brought on this tangent,,,😁😁😁
Broadband in Croatia is very patchy. In the villages and small towns it is rubbish but in the bigger towns and cities it is excellent. Cheaper than aberystwyth and faster too.

Hi Hubnut. Love the videos. Met you at Bromley. Can you please explain the Citroen Diane? We all know the 2cv story. Peasant farmers and eggs in baskets and ploughed fields etc. Why would Citroen then design and build almost the same thing as the 2cv but slightly different?
