  • Thank you for checking out my cover & review of the Carvin Go Off! JB200SC!
    When I had the privilege to visit Jason Becker, he allowed to me to play some of his guitars. One of which was the pearl purple Carvin on the cover of Go Off!, which also happens to be the best guitar I've ever played. Months later, I placed an order with Carvin, who made me the first copy of the Go Off! guitar. This is definitely one of my favorite guitars, and I can't find anything bad to say about it. My JB200C has met it's match!
    Signal chain; my hands - Carvin JB200SC - Maxon OD808 - Fractal Axe Fx II XL+ - Logic Pro X
    This is my first time using multiple cameras, so if I messed it up, please forgive me.

    Awesome playing man! I too had a JB200C (Bluey) built for me, i received it back in August 2021 and love it, best guitar i own. They do not build it with active / passive pick up combo anymore and Jeff said that they do not have the modules for that set up anymore and said that Jason never played it that way, Jason's was passive only and he said that he asked Jason about it and Jason said to just do it passive.

    I believe Jason's originals were 24.75" scale vs. the Tributes at 25.0" scale. It does make a difference in playability. I have a JB200C and also a JBYY at 24.75". Get a JBYY, you wont be sorry!

      Thank you! So I had one of the first JB200C's from 2012. The biggest flaw is that the headstock angle isn't correct, that when you tighten the locking nut, the note will go approximately a half step sharp. The second is the active preamp died within a year.The third was after 3-4 years, I had to get the Floyd rerouted because the posts moved and made it impossible for the trem to return to zero.

    How much is the price of a guitar on market. It sounds very close to Jason Becker.

      I still totally recommend the JB200C! I'm going to copy and paste the flaws.
      The newer JB200's don't have the active preamp, so that won't be a problem. The headstock angle isn't an issue on the Go Off! JB200SC I have. Lastly, the trem route was because I used the Hell out of my JB200C.

    I’m thinking about buying his other tribute guitar the blue sapphire flames maple. Since that also is Carvin/Kiesel and probably plays very similar to the other guitar do you think I should invest in it?

      @thekriswong5977  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I also have the Blue one! Honestly, I believe you'll like the blue JB200C more than the guitar in my video just because of the tung oil neck. I totally recommend the JB200C's, there are so many tonal options on that guitar with the coil splits and phase switch.

    Are you planning to keep it as it is, or are you gonna put some stickers on it?
    I mean it looks so beautiful that way, but the stickers are so 'signature', like they're the first thing that comes to mind.

    • @thekriswong5977
      @thekriswong5977  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey man, thanks for checking out my video! I've been getting this question a lot, and the answer is no. Jason put the stickers on his guitar because he wasn't a fan of the pearl purple color. I love the color of this guitar, and I feel it'd be a bit disrespectful to the guys at Kiesel/Carvin since it took them a couple months to get the paint, haha. If I were to cover the guitar with stickers, I would want all the same stickers on the original, which would be pretty difficult to collect.

    • @sergioandres1135
      @sergioandres1135 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I thought that too, the only acceptable way to cover that kick-ass paint would be with the exact same stickers that Jason had. Otherwise it wouldn't be worth it (altough I can see how some people may not like the ''pinkish'' paintjob)
      Cheers man, and congrats on that guitar, it fucking rocks.

    • @thekriswong5977
      @thekriswong5977  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't like the Hurricane. At the time, the Speed Metal Symphony Hurricane (which Jason recorded Perpetual Burn with) didn't have the neck attached, so I played the blue one on the cover of Perpetual Burn. The neck was a really uncomfortable V shape.

    People with great tone use maple bodies, maple necks, ebony finger boards. The reason for the sustain is due to the heavy maple body.

    • @thekriswong5977

    Is it fair to ask how much it was? One would imagine it costing less due to not having flame maple or a matching headstock, or it could cost more because it's custom.

      It was $1600 if I'm remembering correctly. It came out to the same the price of a JB200C because the pearl purple and ebony fretboard were option 50 requests. Thanks for checking out the video!

    It's too bad that this guitar is going to drift even further from the original now that they're not going to be making the 22 pole pickups any longer. Have no idea what's going in it's place.
    It already was different from the original in terms of pickups ( M22V instead of the fuller bigger sounding M22N), scale length (25" rather than legit 24.75 Gibson scale), bridge (Floyd's instead of Kahler), output (the original was a stereo guitar, the JB is mono) now they're not making the active module any more... Once Jeff sticks the lithiums (I am not a fan of the sound of those ice picks at all) in that guitar then the guitar has completely lost all connection to the unspeakably great man, Jason Becker, for whom no obstacle should be insurmountable.. at that point it's not even a tribute guitar.. just a guitar that bears a passing physical body remembrance to the masterworks that Jason played once upon a time.
    I've been playing Carvin since the mid Eighties (my eternal favorite in my arsenal is my old DC 150k Stereo from 85, made of solid koa.. that guitar was like the big sister to the slightly later dc200. The 200 was once upon a time like a Les Paul in strat clothing.. originally was set neck, 24.75", etc, but the 150 was an open challenger to Gibson LP DC's. I'll never sell it.
    Lastly.. I can assure you that the quality of Carvin/Kiesel isn't better now than it was back during the Classic Era. There are absolutely more color and wood options, but the construction and playability may have actually taken a slight downtown.
    They're still fantastic, but factory flaws and build mishaps are making it out the door that would have never happened back in the day.. they used to guarantee in writing that their necks would play 1/16" off the fretboard at the upper frets above the octave, something they've stopped doing.
    The incredible quality of their instruments was exactly the reason that names like Frank Zappa, Joe Walsh, Becker and Friedman, Heart, Starship, lifeson, Oingo Boingo, Roy Clark, Cippolina, Holdsworth, and on and on all signed on decades ago.
    The most notable and obvious change I've noticed is that the guitars have become more blingy... Sort of like the PRS wood library vibe on a slightly smaller budget.
    Anyhow, nice video and I love seeing Becker devotees!

    • @thekriswong5977
      @thekriswong5977  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for checking out my video! I have an '89 ST 127, and it's a killer guitar. This one resembles it tonally, but it plays a lot better. I do love their classic instruments as well as the modern ones, they're totally different. I hope they don't get rid of the 22 pole pickups completely, but I do also really dig the Seymour Duncan Perpetual Burn.

    • @superclaw900
      @superclaw900 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TheMrturn1 Well it really isn't so much a tribute, it's a guitar built to Jason's current specs and kiesel labels it as a tribute, although it's more of a signature model.
      The original dc200 did not have active electronics, and from what I read from forums, it was generally agreed that the active electronics from carvin were pretty bad and most ordered their guitars to not be installed with them. Also I called them about the lack of AC as one of their options and they said that the company that supplied them went bankrupt.
      Kiesel won't install a kahler to the jb200c, or any guitar for that matter, for two reasons. The first is that they would need to change the design of the body and neck to accommodate for the extra string height with kahler units, and with their new cnc machines it would cost time and money to reprogram them (this may also be the reason for the lack of 24.75in scale length). Second is that Jason said he dislikes kahler because "they don't stay in tune very well" so they went with Floyd rose systems.
      I'm pretty sure you can still get stereo ouput if you call them, but they will most likely charge you a hefty premium. As for the pickups. I personally like the m22v, but I see your point, and I did not know that they are discontinuing the 22 pole piece design, that sucks since I too dislike their new lithium pickups. Glad I ordered my jb200c now before this happens. At least the perpetual burn pickup is voiced similar to the m22 Jason used, so not all is lost. Carvin pickups are still pretty cheap on eBay so I'm gonna start stocking up for future guitars.
      As for quality, I think their techs still do an amazing job at setting up the guitars, and the new cnc machines have a much lower rate of failure then their previous ones. Like Jeff said, you get much more reliability with a machine, than hand cut guitar. Besides, their guitars are still finished off by hand to ensure quality. Apart from that, it's what is keeping kiesel guitars at very affordable price for a custom guitar. Also the removal of the low action guarantee was most likely to protect themselves from being sued, and if you have any problems, send it back to get it fixed they usually pay for shipping both ways.
      Personally, I do not like the direction the company is headed, Jeff kiesel is focusing way too much on the whole progressive/indie rock scene with headless guitars (an eyesore imo), multiscale guitars, and strange body shapes. Like you said, they are becoming way too blingy. I wish kiesel would go back to their carvin days in the 80s and 90s, those truly were the golden years with the dc and st series guitars.
