  • 1965 Ford Galaxie 500 R-Code 427 4-Door Muscle Car Of The Week Video #51
This week, we are spotlighting a car that does not appear to be very special at first glance. After all, Ford made over 420,000 1965 Galaxies, most of which were plain Jane four-door sedans. However, this one is special. The similarity between "humdrum" and "hang on" occurs the moment you open the hood to find a 427 cube R-Code dual quad V-8 cranking out over 425 hp. through a factory four-speed transmission. This is an R-Code 427 four-speed car from the factory, the only one known in the Galaxie registry. This car proves that the Brothers Collection has more than a few tricks up their sleeves!

A four-door can be just as badass as a two-door.

Amazing. I grew up in the backseat of dad’s 65 390 LTD 4dr hardtop. His had factory A/C but dad loved to takes us to Jaxson’s Ice Cream then come home along the beach on A-1-A in Hollywood FL. All 4 windows down but the A/C blasting to counter the oppressive humidity in S Florida. 55 years later I remember those afternoons like they were yesterday.

It was FAST and a beautiful car. We had alot of fun in that car. Years later i got a 64 2dr hardtop, 390-4spd. 62, 63 & 64 are my fav years of ford. Esp the 62-406. Nice video, thanks. You guessed it right - it was an unmarked police car ordered for high speed pursuits of very bad guys. I was a cop in the 60's and 70's and my first undercover Ford police car was a 1962 Galaxie 4 dr, plain jane white. It looked like a bar of Ivory soap. But it had a very special 390 with 3 2 barrel carburetors. It had solid lifters, an Iskederien E-2 cam, a three speed stick on the column with a 4.11 rear and a 2.79 pull-out overdrive. It didn't have a radio or power steering. When we took the engine apart to blueprint it we discovered it was a 405 hp 406. It seems the Ford "Police department" was installing these things in hundreds of police cars to test the engine for durability in secret. By 1967, many highway Patrol cars throughout the country were equipped with experimental 428 Super Cobra Jet V8's - again for a durability test. This engine was subsequently offered on the 1969 Mustang Mach One. I ran into one of these rare 428 Galaxies operated by the Briarcliff Manor P.D. in Westchester County New York. It was an Ivy green 2 dr Hardtop with a white vinyl interior and a 4 speed on the floor; 4.11 rear (no overdrive) and traction Lok. In the sixties - NASCAR motors and NHRA rear ends were tested on the sly in police cars for a year or 2 by Ford. And there was no getting away from them. The one you have there is typical of the Ford DSO's (Domestic Special Order.) with pre-production super-high performance engines and running gear.

Oh, this is a muscle car with that engine and the 4 speed on the floor. No air, no power steering, no power brakes to take some of the power away from this beast. I had a 65 4 door as my first car and loved every minute of it! It had the 352 with dual exhaust and a 4 barrel, and she moved with the much smaller V-8. To this day, it had the coldest air-conditioning ever had by me in a car or truck since. The metal registers would freeze it was so cold!

I love cars like this- Cars you would never expect to find the super performance engine in...The “Barn Find Hunter” found one in a special order 1967 station wagon!! It’s a 1 of 1.

First car I drove when I got my license was my dad’s 1966 4 door Ford Custom 500 with a 289 and 3 speed on the column. It was a nice car surprisingly quick in the stoplight to stoplight drags in St. Louis. No power equipment, no AC. Lots of fun driving that in the late 60’s.

I bought one brand new in 65 with the 4 speed and was a special order. It was in the middle of the horsepower race. You would find many family sedans with the 390 4 bbl police interceptor but they would have auto trans, power brakes and steering. Mine was exactly the same as this one manual steering brakes. Black with red interior bench seats. First new car I ever bought. Wish I still had it. Can't really remember but believe the 352 was the smallest motor offered in the Galaxie 500, there was a 6 cyl offered in the custom.
