What a beautiful car. A gorgeous classic even with the original 390. Hats off to Francis for being it's caretaker and still having the original engine. Quite the package. Never met a high performance engine that liked cold starts especially on a Quebec cold winter day. But as an old school boomer muscle car guy it breaks my heart to see that 427 fe leave the engine bay. What a ride.
Hi Nick & George, This is going to bring back some memories for me. My uncle bought a new 1964 Galaxie 500 XL with a 427 4-speed. It had bucket seats, was Maroon in color, with a black vinyl top. I never got to drive that car, but I sure wanted to, lol. It's great to be here on a Monday, and seeing such a rare muscle car from the 60's.
@@NicksGarage I think all of the men in my family were obsessed with cars, and the need for speed, which rubbed off on me. I remember seeing the black plate in the 1964 Galaxie 500 XL that stated that the car was for off road use only.
I think this video will stand out as one of my all-time favorites!!! Beautiful 64 Galaxy with a rare side oiler engine, which put Nick and the guys to the test: aaaahhh, the old days!!!! Hearing Nick talk about the Aurora HO scale slot cars took me back, I LOVED those things!!!! Like Francis said, if it’s in your blood, it’s in your blood!!! Us old car guys got it honestly 😅😅😅. Nice little wit there, George 😂😂😂. Great week to everybody!!!!
Hey Mr Nick & crew, great job getting that beautiful car in. That snow looks nice but I can't imagine how cold it is there. It's a glorious sunny & comfortable 25 degrees celsius here in Melbourne Australia today. Tomorrow is going to be 34deg c. Cheers & stay warm😊
Nothing like the sound of a well tuned FE engine, nothing sounds like them! It was the first car I learned to drive in and I will never forget that distinctive tone and cackle upon deceleration. A true muscle car from the 60s. I own a 1964 mercury marauder with factory #$ matching 390, I've also owned a 1961 thunderbird with the police package 390 like he us putting back in his car. Fantastic engines, long lived and plenty of power for the time
My older brother had a 64 Galaxy 500 with the 390 and 3 speed manual w/floor shifter, buckets and black on black. I always loved that car, so when I was in grade 8 or 9 I bought a forest green 64 Galaxy with a blown up 289. Before long I had installed a 352 that belonged to my dad in it. I was ever so proud of it, but even though it was a 2 door hardtop, it never matched my brother’s car. It was still running great until that Wednesday night in the summer of 72 when I tried to climb a power pole with it. I gave it to my brother and bought a 66 GTO for the princely sum of $500. That Goat was my ride during my senior year of 72-73. Man, I’d take any of them back today
Mine did too 390 3 speed..blue body with a white top..great car..I had a 65 Galaxie fast back 352 Cruise O Matic..drove in my senior year in 73..I now have a white 65 Galaxie..352 Cruise O Matic I'm the second owner I bought it in 1991..it drives and runs like new..80,000 miles..
If I ever get one of those 390 again, I’m gonna put one of those new injector carbs on it and see if it can get better gas mileage , when I don’t have my foot in it😂
@@dcraexon Good luck trying to get any MPG out of a 352 or a 390. I've done all sorts of carb and ignition tuning and found nothing to make a difference past a certain point. Going from a stock to 2200 stall converter and 3:00 to 3.70:1 gears didn't even change the MPG any either. Mixed driving I average 10 MPG in a 4 door 64 galaxie. My dad's galaxie with a 445 stroker and C6 2500 stall with a huge cam in it and 3.91 gears doesn't do much worse than that. My last tank of fuel on the original 352 in the 4 door with 3:1 gears and a freshly rebuilt transmission was 8.5 MPG driving it like a normal car. That engine had some issues, but it ran very well, actually it ran a lot better than it should have.
@@MattsRageFitGarage yeah I couldn’t afford that with today’s gas prices my truck ate gas in the city on the freeway. It wasn’t too bad. it was so fun doing those second gear scratches though😂
@@dcraexon I guess the galaxie's don't do all that bad when you consider my 86 F250 only averages 10 MPG empty city or highway, it's just got a mildly modified 351W and a C6 with 3.55 gears. It got 8 MPG stock.

I had a 1964 Galaxie 500 XL convertible, red with a red interior and white top, console shift automatic, power windows. It had a 361 police interceptor in it when I bought it second hand in 1969. With duel thrush mufflers on it , it would snap really nice when you stepped on the gas. Sold it and bought a 4 door family car when the kids started coming. Oh the stupid things we do for love. lol.
That's a beautiful '64 Galaxie, Francis. I had a black '64 Ford, not a Galaxie, not a 427. Was a 289 with three-on-the-tree and overdrive. Still had a lot of fun with that car.
Back in the early 70's my Dad bought a 1972 Galaxie 500 and we had it until the mid 80's and he sold it to a friend of the family and 4 months later his son was running from the police and lost control and destroyed the car. the son was lucky he was not seriously injured and was made to work to replace the car he had destroyed. The car was near mint as my Dad took extra care of it every year he had it.
Nick, my neighbor has a 1964 Ford Thunderbolt with a 427 FE. He showed it to me and my dad. it's a beautiful car. The Thunderbolt is white with a red interior. He bought the car new and I don't think he would take a million dollars for it. 1964 was an amazing year for body styling in my opinion. I can't wait to see this 427 on your dyno. That's a nice car! I love the old Galaxies, especially the 63 1/2. Lifelong friend of mine has a '66 Galaxy convertible with the dual 4bbl 427, 4 spd., red on red, with a white top that belonged to his father. He ordered it new when he came back from his Army deployment in Germany from the local Ford dealer and had it his entire life. It has a plate on the console that reads "specially built for" and his name afterwards. It's getting a little rough around the edges with it needing a new top and a little rust starting in places, but it's all there, runs and drives. Been sitting in the garage for years now, but we got it running again and it sounds great. My friend is torn as to whether to do a complete restoration or try and sell it. The car is quite rare, and restoration will be very expensive, but I think it is worth doing. Very interesting car.
Old gas, a cold day and no choke on the carb, just three more curves in the equation. As to finally getting the car into the shop, the Army has a term for everything.. what Nick did to get the car into the shop is referred to as: "Field Expedient."

Well, I gotta say, this is the first time I've ever watched an entire video of getting a car in the shop, and that was the success of the day. 😊😅😂 still, it was worth watching.
Of course we won't try that at home. It's always on the side of the interstate! Duct tape a five gallon can to the windshield, use air line for fuel hose to get home. Love it, Nick, George and crew.
Nick and Francis, thank you for the wonderful video, I love the 1964 Ford Galaxie 2 door hardtop. Nick your diligent work on getting the old Ford into the garage is admirable. Two comments my Dad was a manufacturers agent in the Maritimes and sold part of his line of products was Kleen Flo. Who make great automotive fluids and etc. Secondly in my early 20's I owned and drove a 1963 Mercury Monterey which was Black with a red interior. With a 390 4 barrel V8 with dual exhaust. For it's day it was extremely powerful highway cruiser . Great memories.
👍 Brings back good memories, got in the habit of putting my hand over the ports. Doing a timing of wide-open throttle and putting my hand over the ports to keep the rpm down. It helps to clean the arteries of the carburetor. People told me they can tell it ran better doing that, the cars were stock form.
Dana "60" Glass. Many stories about getting old projects from point A to point B. One of the funniest was a '68 Buick GS400 4speed that quit on the way to my buddy's shop. It quit at a truck stop. So we grabbed his trailer and proceded to push start the car to get it on the trailer. No winch just a come along. Even dumping the clutch it wouldn't start, so that meant pushing it from one end of the parking lot to the next. After 3 tries we finally got it on the trailer and home to the shop. We had an audience inside the truck stop that I'm sure got entertained.
Francis is a discerning man For his Galaxie he has hatched a restoration plan He wants to refit it's original 390 and if anyone can do it Nick's Garage can Francis built the Galaxie with a dear departed friend So now it's been taken to Nick's Garage to mend RIP Bob he was a legend The Galaxie will be getting a new heart once Nick achieves a cold start Cuz you can't put the horse before the cart It's black but it ain't bleak Out in the snow the Galaxie sure looks low n sleek At Nick's Garage there's different cars and car stories every single week Thanks for sharing Francis and Nick Word to your brother George
My favorite Ford. I had a 64 Galaxie 500XL Convertible with the 390, Cruse-O-Matic. White with the Red interior. AM/FM Factory Radio, Power Steering, Manual Brakes. Sure wish I still had it. There are only two cars form my past I wish I still had. The Ford and my 75 Scout II.
I like your old school spirit, Nick. Had to keep antifreeze additive in my fuel tank in the winters I spent in Chicago. Different fuel formulations for summer and winter made a difference too
Hi there. Every time I watch Nick's garage, George's voice and narrative style reminds me of that show "The Wonder Years" from the nineties. To me, Nick's garage is " The Muscle Years". Love that Galaxie! Pull up to a red light with that sleeper and just wait for the green to show and you've got your 50'X8" rubber signature at the intersection.

I helped do crazier things than this back in the day. Reminds me of days in the 70’s when I would help my friend and his dad rescue no starts in the dead of winter. Brings back fun memories!
This was my 1st car my Dad bought it my older sister. She refuse to drive it it was too ugly for her. I just got my driver license few weeks before. Dad turn to me asked me "do you want to drive it". The answer was hell yes. It was 1964 Galaxie 500 it bronze with white top. The year was year 1974.
You always have rare engines and cars in the shop. Even back in the day 426 Hemis weren't common. My friend Charlie wanted to order a 1970 Hemi Road Runner but the warranty thing changed his mind. He got the 440 Six Pack and a 4speed.
A deputy in our county had a 64 2 door post with a 427 2x4 4speed car. It was fast. His brother inlaw took me a ride in it. At that time the deputies had to supply their own car. The county did not supply cars.
Back when Detroit took pride in designs! To my eye, 1964, collectively speaking with all makes together, was the pinnacle of car design. Just my eyes maybe but I always liked the full collection of 1964 best
Looking forward to the 427on the dyno. Was moms favorite engine for 6 years in her new cars, sure made a 7 to13 year old a happy son. When she couldn't order one she just switched to Lincoln. I also had 2 of them myself, both went into a 63 1/2, a stock 1 and a built 1, never knowing their true hp.

Nick, moving that old Galaxy into your garage like that, reminds me of what I had to do with some of the old junkers I used to own that didn't want to start or gave me problems when I had to move them around...nice work with the brake cleaner!!
Only at Nick's Garage but hey you got it in the shop Nick. I'm sure once you get the 427 sorted it will be fun on the dyno and once the 390 is installed everything will work out just as its meant to Nick. Beaut video George once again.
To be honest Nick after 30 attempts to crank it over, and considering all your efforts thereafter to get it in the shop of yours… don’t want to break the friendship but you should have got the owner to back the trailer to the driveway shop, whilst you where in the car trailer and pushed it straight in. But you where exited 😮about the 4 speed options and wanted to go for a spin 😂 😂 I know you to well after watching your vids and I’m a subscriber to your channel. I was surprised you didn’t ask if you can powershift the Fairlane like you asked the old guy for a joke with the 1930’s -40’s car in a previous video Lmfao 🤣 that was legendary. Anyways it’s in your shop now and magnificent looking car, RIP to the builder. That’s a gorgeous Fairlane. Take care with you and your crew. 🙏🏽

I’m not a Ford guy but this car is very cool. This video was immensely entertaining and I’ve certainly have done similar actions to move cars. “It should crank up quite easily.” Well…perhaps not. Great stuff!
Probably suggested in previous posts...To move a car with standard tranny and carburetor / bad gas issues is to remove the plugs, disable the ignition and use the starter for prime mover. Turn it into a short distance electric car. Insight is 20/20...Pretty sure if Nick would've known how bad the carb and fuel was, he would've just done that.
About the 8 minute mark all I could think of was all the old movies where the car always stalls on the train crossing with the train coming and it won’t hit a lick. Lol😂
We had a little ford diesel tractor that had the injection pump changed and it did not want to reprime the system so we ended up pulling it with another tractor while I stood on the steering linkage and leaned over the hood and cracked the injectors one at a time till all the air was out and it fired up! Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do 👍

Of course we won't try that at home. It's always on the side of the interstate! Duct tape a five gallon can to the windshield, use air line for fuel hose to get home. Love it, Nick, George and crew.
Im happy he decided to put the original motor back in. Beautiful car
Thanks for enjoying the video.
That's one beautiful car
It's moments like you had to go through that makes me glad I no longer work on cars. I'm looking forward to seeing that 427 running and on the dyno.
👍 Brings back good memories, got in the habit of putting my hand over the ports. Doing a timing of wide-open throttle and putting my hand over the ports
to keep the rpm down. It helps to clean the arteries of the carburetor. People told me they can tell it ran better doing that, the cars were stock form.
Good to see there is still a little of bush mechanic in you brother.
Beautiful machine!
Yes indeed!
This is my favorite ford! Your right nick( not surprised about that) Ford switched to the fair lane for weight savings
Gorgeous car! So glad to see it on the show. Thanks to everyone involved !
Our pleasure!
One of the greats in the 60s ford line up. That is one stunning galaxie. Absolute favorite
Nick strikes again with his old school knowledge! Enough said. Gilbert Alicea NYC
Thanks Gil!
Beautiful car. The '64 Galaxy was one of my favorite cars of that era.
I was 14 when these came out and I loved to see them in person whenever I came across one 😊
Different fuel formulations for summer and winter made a difference too
Wow, what a great battery to hold up under all that!
Yeah. Hard to believe Nick didn't have a spare 4150 carb laying around.
Could've slapped one on in 10-15 minutes max!
The muscle years were good years.
Yessir they were ! It's a shame that today's generation will never know firsthand the thrill of owning one of those fire breathing factory street beater's ( often bought with one or two pay checks !@@NicksGarage
What I loved my buddy’s ‘63 Galaxies 500 was the big chrome tops to the windows, among other things. 🙂
You always have rare engines and cars in the shop. Even back in the day 426 Hemis weren't common. My friend Charlie wanted to order a 1970 Hemi Road Runner but the warranty thing changed his mind. He got the 440 Six Pack and a 4speed.
What a BEAUTIFUL old Galaxie! the 1963.5 Galaxie is my favorite of all time car, but this 64 is pristine!
A deputy in our county had a 64 2 door post with a 427 2x4 4speed car. It was fast. His brother inlaw took me a ride in it. At that time the deputies had to supply their own car. The county did not supply cars.
5 degrees! Cold! Beautiful car thanks for showing us getting it in the shop!
Beautiful car. Hopefully it doesn't need a clutch after that maneuver to get it in the shop!
Giasou Nikola,
Finally a 427 Fomoco enters the den of Nick's Garage.
All you need is a L72 427 Chevy Engine & the battle of the big 3.
I can see why you absolutely hate snow, after this video I am on your side, no more snow no more cold weather.
Beautiful car trailer that is a work of art, keen to see what hp this 427 pushes on the dyno.
Cheers

Giassou Louis. I had sent a few packages to Australia lately. For 2 viewers.
Beautiful car!
Nick, moving that old Galaxy into your garage like that, reminds me of what I had to do with some of the old junkers I used to own that didn't want to start or gave me problems when I had to move them around...nice work with the brake cleaner!!
The best way to move a ford is to push or tow it
Memories of living and driving in Winnipeg winters during the 60's, 70's, and 80's come flooding back hahaha.
George just cracked me up… “I don’t think Francis is going to give you the same deal Nick.”
😂😂
Nick the problem was that the engine knew you were going to pull out it but it liked where it had been for years! You were fighting its Carma!
The winters are brutal on starting them big blocks, but I enjoyed watching Nick troubleshooting.
Only at Nick's Garage but hey you got it in the shop Nick. I'm sure once you get the 427 sorted it will be fun on the dyno and once the 390 is installed everything will work out just as its meant to Nick. Beaut video George once again.
Thanks Blinkie.
What a beautiful car!
I didn't expect a cold start video of 30 minutes but I enjoyed it more than the other videos.
Nick living the dream….respect
Wow! A 427 Galaxie! Gorgeous car.I have been an avid viewer for years and this is why I love your channel.Always interesting suprises.I was at your shop a couple of years ago with Roger in my blue 66 Impala Dirty Mary Crazy Larry replica.Cheers Nick!
Cheers!
CANNOT WAIT to hear that SideOiler wailing on the dyno!!!
I don't think these guys will ever get it started
What a sight to see! Both the 427 and that beautiful 1964 Galaxie 500XL!
Another epic Monday episode ! Old ford looks like a moonshine runner
Back in the 70s my neighbor had one that he crashed into the ditch and us kids would pretend to drive it. Even smashed is was a nice metallic blue with black interior. I'm not a Ford guy but the 64 Galaxy 500 is a cool car.
Nick the Galaxie is a very beautiful sport car. The paint work is excellent.
I am sixty two years old I rode in a lot of these muscle cars born in 1961 I seen all of these cars on Friday night in my small town they would cruise around the block Chevys Ford Mopar the one dude had the 427 Corvette sixpack he seemed to be the top dog for a while until a hemi barracuda show up it they were the fastest the town
I got one of them in 1987 it was a 1963 FORD GALAXY 500 with the 390 c6 transmission 4 doors black on red I wish I still had that car that was the first car I bought I did not have a driver license
Loud clacking from electric fuel pump usually means fuel tank empty ..
Nice classic 👍
THANKS NICK AND FRANCIS and guys.....l had a friend back in 1964 who had a 64 Galaxie just like this one....lt was a baby blue an it had a 390 engine.....Shoe🇺🇸
Sounds sweet.
Lol😂
Love the period correct chokless double pumper! Good thing it isn't freezing.
Nice ride. The 427's definitely have a unique sound. Love the 4-speed also..
That is my dream engine. 427 with a 428scj crank. Have to win the lottery to justify the cost of such a motor. Cheers to those that have those toys.
We had a little ford diesel tractor that had the injection pump changed and it did not want to reprime the system so we ended up pulling it with another tractor while I stood on the steering linkage and leaned over the hood and cracked the injectors one at a time till all the air was out and it fired up! Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do 👍
A race carburetor with no choke!! You’ll be lucky to get it running at forty above zero, let alone forty below! A summer only setup.
Beautiful car! The 64 coupe is my favourite Galaxie!
