You just need someone to fall in love with.
This song played nonstop in my head while I was in the hospital dying of COVID almost three years ago. I was in a coma for 4 days and I swear I could hear this echoing in my head as they tried to keep me alive.
I am glad you survived! There is so much more beauty, like this song, for you yet to experience.

In Finland ’The Swan’ carries a special meaning. For a Finnish listener this beautiful melody tells a story of a bitter loss and lack of communication, where one can only silently stare into emptiness of their soul.
thank you for sharing
Finns & a lack of communication? Can we get a fact-checker in here? 😆
For a Finn, is there also a significance to "flying with the black swan"? ☺️
Kinda grim for something meant for being full of grace
Sad, but beautiful words.

Indeed...
It's amazing how people associate this piece with mourning the loss of a loved one, or reminiscing the memories of times passed, or of falling in love. This only goes to show that music speaks a language only the heart knows.
You could visualize this piece both as the spring at the end of the bitter winter cold, or the autumn after a joyful summer sunshine, it would still have the same feeling, just with a slightly different context.

Yo Yo Ma is a great cellist, might be the best cellist in the world. He is a very nice person as well. After joined his concert in Pittsburgh, I bravely walked to the stage, chatted with him and told him how much I had enjoyed the concert. He was very nice and friendly.
I live not far from him. Foolish me, I had the chance to drive him while I once worked for a limousine company, locally, but chickened out. Now I learned how nice he is. Bill

Hello how are you doing it’s nice meeting you here.
My favorite part is this sustained note at 2:04 that Yo Yo Ma plays with the most passionate and beautiful crescendo. Every time I hear it a wave of happiness washes over me. Truly soul touching music🙌
My grandmother and mother were both piano and cello teachers, respectively. Whenever my gran used to visit us they would play this duet together. Always. A few years ago my grandmother was diagnosed with dementia, the sort that degrades your body and well as your mind. Now she can no longer sit at a piano, or even play it. It was the thing she loved most to do in the world, and it hurts to see her like this. She taught me piano herself. Whenever I hear this piece I will always remember how they looked as they played it together, and how she used to be.
Nice story. Thanks. And I can empathize with you.
You ever play it for her?
This hurts on another deep level. So sorry for what you must be going through.
I know well what is dementia due to my father and mother..
I am sure when you play a piano to your grandmother feels and be happy..I now well that they can forget memories but not hobbies..
I’m so sorry. ❤️
Have you ever hear a piece and cried? Because it reminds you how much life was okay back then. But it tells you through the notes that you can't turn back time at the same time, it says that, it's gonna be fine, everything is going to be, fine. Walk ahead and let God do His work. Follow the flow and enjoy your time while you're still alive.

Wow. I am with you on these emotions. I’ve been playing it over and over, waiting until I stop crying, and that hasn’t happened yet. It’s not like I’m remembering specific things in my life. I’m just feeling them without even knowing where the emotions are coming from.

You Are. Keep Going.
I teach music and sometimes hear a student say, "Why should I play? I'll never be as good as (insert name here)."
I answer: You are correct. You will probably never be as good at sounding like your idol. But he or she will never be as good at sounding like you. Bring YOUR OWN brand of passion to the music. People will feel what is inside you. Some people will like your idol and some will like you. Practice until your soul shines through your performance. No one can have a "better" soul than you - only a different one."

Beautiful thought. We need more people and teachers like you. :D
thank you for this comment, really.
Very true! I would also add that just because you’re not the absolute very best at something, doesn’t mean that it’s not worth doing. Making music in itself is so valuable in enriching your life. I feel like so many of us have this all or nothing attitude where if we can’t do something perfectly it’s not worth doing at all, and that’s so sad. If you’re working hard and creating something you love, that’s the most valuable thing in the world.
Your student can perform live music in places Yo-Yo Ma would never give a concert.

Yo-Yo Ma don't play the cello, he is the cello
and god works magic through him
+Peter Hu no... its called hard work and discipline coupled with a talent he chose to embrace.. such nauseating nonsense this continual worship of mythical deities.
John Thomas-Jones,
Peter Hu is simply saying that Yo-Yo Ma's talent is akin to something beyond human ability because he's so good. Just because he uses the word "god" doesn't actually mean it's a reference for some "magical diety." Your aberrant judgment of another human-being-who is simply making an awestruck remark is "nauseating nonsense."
WTF, let people say what they want to say, they have a brain, they can think for themself, they can believe in what they want(god inclued!)
they don't ask your opinion, and they don't give a fuck! You're not going to force people to think like you!
The Music is a harmony, not a battle...
John Thomas-Jones: I do it daily. I'm a nurse. Why, I've had my whole arm up an ass before. ;) Oh, and a vagina too. We have a naturally sick, twisted sense of humor. We like to shove plastic tubes into people's orifices, including the one they urinate from. Blood, guts, vomit, sputum, you name it. And I've heard every insult in the book that even the devil himself couldn't devise. So please, spare the PG-rated "insult." Save those for someone less jaded. :)

A girl I onced knew introduced me to this piece. She liked this one a lot I remember. She was really fond of these slow pieces where it makes you think about all the feelings you've ever felt, and the feelings you're just about to feel. She kept on recommending me all sorts of music she loved listing to, which is something I've always felt to be romantic. And of all of those music she's introduced me to, it was this that caught my ears and made me think of one woman I've ever loved the hardest in my entire life. I never really knew what's the story behind this piece of music back then, which makes me so emotional to have to hear it again without her by my side. Now that she's gone I don't really have the use of what the story of this music is about. As now I finally have my own story to think of while getting lost in the tunes. A story to think about while she's happy with someone else. A story to think of while I try to cry alone in my room, while my tears are a burden enough to pour out of my eye sockets. It's truly quite a sad music I'll never forget, that comes with a girl I'll continuously think about till this day.
YO Yo Ma is an incredible artist. I don't think I heard anyone who plays with such passions and beauty.

Why was this song on TikTok?
I have been playing violin since I was nine. I am twelve now, and over that time I have heard such beautiful compositions like this and learned to appreciate every note. I think the whole world should understand the beauty of real music. In my mind, what makes an artist truly great, is their ability to put emotion into anything they play, whether it's joy, sadness, anger, or anything else. I think Yo-Yo Ma and Kathryn Stott did just that! Bravo!
You are very eloquent for your age :)
I started on the violin at four, switched to the viola at 12 and I'm telling you now that I'm glad I never stopped, I'm so happy that you understand the beauty in music and I know that it will bring you so much happiness even when you don't feel that way. Continue with it because it will get you places you never thought you could be.

You're not an atheist then :)
This is my favorite song in the world. I listen to it everyday. I listen when I’m stressed. I listen when I’m dad’s I listen when I’m happy. I listen to celebrate. This song gives my soul goosebumps everytime that I hear it.
it’s so hard not to cry every time I hear him play this song :’) everything about the Piece is just so perfect
Everyone over here like " oh it's so beautiful" and then there's me who has a lesson soon and hasn't practiced at all this week lol
literally me too
Have you been practicing all those 6months ?
i think almost everyone who plays strings go though this
Literally me 😭😭
Ten year old me can relate
i feel like like this is what a journey is like, the way at the start he builds up a super powerful note (0:25)... yet he doesn't play it through, then he goes back down, representing the way a journey has ups and downs then closer to the end the powerful note is played out in full (2:00) and it feels like finally reaching the end of your journey and experiencing the "pot of gold at the end of the rainbow" type feeling... its so melodic, chaotic yet smooth and simple... i know nothing about classical music so please don't come at me... this is just how i feel.
Agree with you completely!
Feel beats knowledge anyday
They play so beautifully together
Yo yo makes the cello alive...........master of his art
If you want to play like Yo-Yo Ma, first you have to become a cello.
I've got one and play the swan
No flex
No, the cello must become a part of you.
I read this as 'first you have to have a cello'
No duh 😅
ju_tu i do too! I'm not great because I don't practice much but the reason I play is because I'm completely in love with everything about cellos and cello music. Also Yo-Yo Ma is incredible i listen to this on repeat
One of the prettiest songs ever written. Saint-Saens is a master, and these 2 wonderful musicians do an exquisite job with it. Awesome!
Ditto!
I agree
This gunna be my wedding song💃🏽❤️
Absolutely love this music

These 3 minutes felt like hours. It was so comforting and I almost cried. It got right into my heart but also covered me like a warm blanket, I just can’t describe what I just felt. It’s soo amazing, so sweet and perfect I will search for an one hour version

I love how warm this piece is ! I come here every rain , whenever sad , and every Thursday ("
First heard this piece when was a teenager - I cried then ,, and I still cry now,, And seeing it performed as classical ballet piece makes it even more moving..
