This is hands down one of the best playthroughs I have watched. I have just ordered the game and am trying to learn before it arrives. This hits the perfect point of not over explaining everything but covering some of the trickier bits as well as being full of good banter, sing-songs and just a whole load of fun. Also love that you pay homage to other TH-cam channels with the T-shirt....def subbing and watching your other playthrough's!
Really neat play through - a good balance between explanation of rules + tactical thinking along with a pace that makes a play through pleasingly snappy. Good to see this BGG monster getting played.

When you snap with the cards action, you’re only allowed to take 1 card. Then your turn is over. You can’t snap, and then draw from the deck. ✌🏼

Great playthrough. Impressed with your speed of play. This game hits all the boxes for me especially because of the theme, but our first few games took 2.5 hours at 2 players due to efficiency issues and card draws. My favorite zoo animals are snow leopards...closely followed by meerkats and ring-tailed lemurs
Great picks for animals! And we agree this game ticks a lot of boxes. The game at times can be longer or shorter based on getting the cards to feed the engine you're building that's for sure but it's nice that at 2 it can definitely cook along nicely

Waiting patiently for my copy to become available. Loved the playthrough. Ive read the rule book online already but seeing is sooo much more enjoyable . If I visit Mike's Zoo, sadly I will miss the cute little bunnies in the petting zoo. I think they were forgotten. But the Giraffes look amazing!!!

I've always loved the toucan and the koala. Just because of the way they look :D I can't say much about Ark nova yet. I've never played it yet. But it looks cool. I love animals.
My favorite animal at the zoo is giant otters! With all the talk about the game being long I'm glad to see you speedsters go at it.
Edit: just finished and I'm in awe of Nick's Hitchcock strat and still laughing about two vultures waiting up top the aviary with no animals to munch on. Maybe they can clean up at Mike's petting zoo.

I really liked your playthrough. I saw a mistake that you did and points it out for the future.
In about 59:00 Nick plays the Sun Bear. His power Action Assosiation is after finishing the Animals action.That means that you first finish the animal action and move the animal card to 1. Then you do the Association action which will be at 3, not 2. Also, after that the Association action will move to 1.
But a great playthrough. I keep telling people the game isn't as long as they say if you know what you're doing.

30:07 Nick would not be able to build his Aviary along with a one and two enclosure. He would've needed to spend his X tokens to make it a build strength of 8 to complete all 3 of those enclosures.
Yeah we pointed that out in the edit, Nick goofed
He also built an enclosure not connected to the rest of his zoo.
Really enjoyed this playthrough and my favourite animal has to be the puma

That draw cards ICON allows you to EITHER draw cards in your reputation level OR draw one from the deck.

22:29 Nick mentions that he can only mentions that he can snap cards only from certain spaces, but he could take any of the ones on the board. It's the other actions (upgraded Cards action, board space bonuses) that are limited by your reputation.

My gaming group (3p) has played this 3 times now. We LOVE this game! Definitely crunchy and so satisfying! Last game final scores: 31, 29 and 24. Still learning. Last game lasted just under 4 hours. (Our quickest so far-- my group suffers from moderate to severe AP).
My favorite animal: The panda. Tickets and conservation points? Yes please!

59:53 i think you first move animals to slot 1 so you'd only need 2 x-tokens for association action to get to 5

What is the Snap action again? You can either draw or snap?
Draw from the deck or to snap take any one card from the face up display
I don't get Mike's last turn. He had Association at 3, and 3 X's, right? That's a total of 6. He needed 8 to do both tasks, but got a discount of 1 one the Conservation project, so he needed 7. 4 and then 3. I think he counted the discount twice by saying the 6 counted as 7. He needed 7 to count as 8.
This is possible. I remember counting to 7 which is what I needed but I may have made a goof. We human after all

I know this comment is almost a year old but for anybody just watching it, you can only get one university of each type. You can't get the same one more than once. Per the rules, "You cannot take a university you already have."

Hey guys! Great playthrough and helped my figure out some of the things we've been doing wrong. However, isn't it illegal to up your action to more than 5? I see in the last turn that it's upgraded to 7 with 2 x tokens, but in my (Dutch) rulebook it says "A power can never be more than 5". (Page 8, first paragraph under "the 5 action cards")
As far as we know you can move up beyond 5, but it's possible we've been playing that wrong
I just got the game recently. In the English rulebook, also page 8, it says:
"You can use as many X-tokens as you like in one action. With some actions, however, a strength greater than 5 no longer improves the action."
So they might have clarified the rules in a newer version of the rulebook, but it definitely sounds like X > 5 is allowed.
I think one of the sponsor cards I saw had a level of 6, so I suspect the way they played was correct.

No I wouldn’t say. There is similarity in the cards but that’s about it
It's nothing like Terraforming Mars from what I can see. Other than being a card based board game.
After playing both, I think the "cool' mechanism in this game is definition the action cards and how they get more powerful when they aren't used right away.
Terraforming Mars is more about the card combos and racing for the goals or "good" spaces on the board. I like both games, but they definitely feel different.

I take it you can't have more animals in play than you have enclosures correct? You can't have more than one animal in the same enclosure? So if you had for example three animals then you would have to have three enclosures and if you wanted to play more animals you would therefore have to build more enclosures first?
Oh nvm? So long as an enclosure has enough space you can have multiple animals. Like later in the game you had multiple birds in your five enclosure space. If you want to put multiple animals into the same enclosure you have to put those cubes that correspond with your color to represent that you have multiple animals in there?
Correct for the most part, one animal, one enclosure. Certain animal cards can break that and then the special enclosures can have multiples
If we are talking real animals and not fantasy creatures, it's got to be penguins. no questions. Penguins just speak to me... They mostly just ask for fish, but I've been told by my psychiatrist to just ignore them.
